'Rugged' Rick Horn is a kid who has been hanging around the TWL lockerroom for two years. Every show, the kid bugs Stampy about giving him a job. Well today he finished his wrestling training and Stampy offered him a generous contract at $350/appearance to be fodder for some of the boys in need of a win. 'Rugged Rick' turned it down because he wanted more money. Stampy "invited him to have sex with himself," only he didn't use those words. I think the only time I've seen Stampy so angry was when the Streets' left TWL! For the rest of the day, Stampy reminded anyone who would listen what $350 could buy you. Judging by his car, I can guess what Stampy spent his last $350 on...

TWL Sundown Showcase

September, 1977

War Memorial Auditorium (Midwest)

Attendance: 1,613

‘Perfect’ Pat Deacon came out to the ring holding a microphone and a small pink thermal blanket. Major W.G. Reginald acted subdued, not his normally bombastic self, as he strolled along behind. “Mycroft Nero, you sick freak,” Deacon began, idly rubbing the silk edge of the blanket between his thumb and forefinger, “messing with a man’s mind is one thing. Messing with his family is another. There’s a line there and you crossed it. When I got home after the farce of an ‘I Quit’ match, Beth was fine, sleeping like a little angel in her bed. You were never there, were you Nero? It was just a mind game, wasn’t it? Well this time your mind games went too far. You made a big mistake…you made it personal. So Nero, I won’t rest until you pay. And you will pay dearly when I get you back in the ring.” Deacon showed a lot of fire in this promo, a distinct divergence from his laid-back ‘Perfect Pat’ persona. C+

Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman v. Luis Reyes

Billy’s Take: Reyes came out to the ring first, Carlos and Don Juan Reyes in tow. Similarly, Bowman brought out fellow Outlaws Mean Mark Green and the Trailer Park Kid. To have any semblance of order, I immediately ordered all four non-combatants to the back, drawing a mix of boos and cheers from the War Memorial Auditorium crowd. Once that was sorted out, the match itself was very good, Luis Reyes again validating the excitement of many industry insiders about his future. But Bowman’s experience was just too much for young Luis, who ate a Salute ‘n Boot to give Bowman the win.

The odd man known simply as The Prophet came down the entrance ramp and grasped the ring microphone. “Ever closer to the day of judgment,” he intoned in his high-pitched voice. “One day very soon He will come and cleanse this company of its vile shame. Very soon, my people, He will arrive!” As the Prophet started to leave, the Black Serpent Cult hit the ring. Cobra hit the Solid Snake Stunner and Viper the Snakebite Roundhouse Kick, leaving The Prophet in a heap in the center of the ring as they sneered. C-

‘American Made’ Johnny Boy Tucker/Trailer Park Kid w/Shannon v. Don Juan Reyes/Carlos Reyes w/Luis Reyes

Billy’s Take: The Trailer Park Kid and Tucker came out first, the latter holding tightly to Shannon’s hand and leading her to the ring. The Reyes’ came out next, accompanied by little brother Luis. Unlike the earlier match, which was just a one-on-one encounter, I decided to let the managers remain for this one. Big mistake. Luis Reyes constantly distracted me…I can only assume that it was to let Don Juan and Carlos cheat while my back was turned. Unfortunately for the Border Runners, they did this one time too many and I turned around to see Luis Reyes punch Trailer Park right in the face. I immediately called for the bell, awarding the match, via disqualification, to the makeshift tandem of Tucker and TPK.

Rip Chord strode to the ring, a smug grin on his face. As usual, Mayhem Midden followed closely behind, scowling and shooting dirty looks at ringside fans. In his hands, Rip Chord carried a manila envelope, which he opened as he took the microphone. “Five thousand dollars. That’s a lot of money, especially for you cheap-ass fans!” Rip took out a large wad of bills, flipping through them while whistling through his teeth. “But worth every wooden nickel to end Krogan’s charade. Rip Chord’s bounty wasn’t bullsh*t…it’s as real as this stack of hundred dollar bills. Remember, all Rip Chord wants is Mark Krogan, unmasked in the center of the ring. You don’t have to win the match, don’t have to have your hand raised in victory. Rip Chord could care less about your won-loss record. All Rip wants is Krogan’s dignity. And Rip Chord will pay well for it,” he ended, flipping the bills in his hand, “very well.” B-

The Executioner v. TimberWolf w/Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: Apparently TimberWolf is first in line to try and collect Rip Chord’s bounty as Professor Nero’s canine protégé faced off against the masked Executioner. I’m so lost on which Executioner is which, though this one did look remarkably like Mark Krogan. Not surprisingly (especially if it was Krogan under the hood), The Executioner controlled this match and won easily with a Power Lariat.

After the match, the Executioner slipped under the ring to evade Nero and TimberWolf’s post-match assault. When he rolled back out, he seemed much smaller. This new Executioner ‘allowed’ himself to be captured by Nero and TimberWolf. Nero gleefully pulled off his mask, probably just as interested in acquiring a new trinket as cashing in on the bounty. But it was not Krogan under the mask, but instead the Sadistic Duo had unmasked Pavel Landis. Nero screamed in frustration and called for TimberWolf to destroy the imposter. TimberWolf did just that, wrapping a ringside chain around Landis’ neck and beating him senseless. TimberWolf then slid under the ring, apparently to corner the ‘real’ Executioner. Instead, TimberWolf crawled out the opposite side and shrugged his shoulders, as if he couldn’t find the Executioner. Nero dismissively backhanded TimberWolf, causing TimberWolf to whimper and sit obediently on his haunches.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/ProfessorNero1977.jpg

Still in the ring, Professor Nero took a microphone, apparently lucid and using his normal voice rather than his sing-songy childlike tone. “Pat Deacon, I am not a sadist. I am not a pervert. Beth was fine all along, wasn’t she? I just thought you needed a reminder about what it is like to have no one. To have nothing. I wanted you to experience, even if just for a minute, what it is like to be me, Professor Nero. I am the Intelligent Monster, but am misunderstood even here in my ring, my sanctuary. So as to your request to face me again? It is just not as simple as that. You see, to get to me, you have to live my nightmare, even if just briefly. You must face my demons, my minions, my disciples So tonight you get Rampage in his specialty, a No Holds Barred match. You win, we talk next week. You lose, this discussion is over.” His lucidity wearing off, Nero began babbling something about ticker tape or tater tots, or something about France. Hard to tell really with Nero on the stick. No Holds Barred: ‘Perfect’ Pat Deacon w/Major W.G. Reginald III v. Rampage w/Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: Nero signaled to the back and Rampage crept to the ring, incessantly rubbing at his neck. Nero beckoned him to his side, dismissively waving off TimberWolf, who slunk to the back, metaphorical tail between his legs. Deacon and Reginald came out next, both foregoing their typical towel-waving entrance in favor of intently focusing on this contest. Inside the ring, this was a brutal affair, with Rampage seemingly enjoying the bloodshed while Deacon persisted, a determined look on his face. The two brawled back and forth, Rampage using Nero’s cane and Deacon a chair pulled from ringside to brain the sadistic painted man. In the end, Deacon was simply too focused and determined, locking Rampage in a Cobra Clutch. Rampage refused to submit and eventually passed out from the pain, a small smirk playing at the corners of his mouth as Deacon took the win.

Mean Mark Green v. 'The Baddest Man on the Planet' Mayhem Midden w/Rip Chord

Billy’s Take: Midden and Chord came out first, Chord leading the way despite Mayhem being the entrant in the match. The enforcer of the Texas Outlaws, Mean Mark, came out next, sauntering coolly to the ring and slapping hands with fans at ringside. As with their past encounters, this was a brawl. No more, no less. And as with their past encounters, neither held a discernable advantage – they were incredibly evenly-matched. In the end, the presence of Rip Chord tipped the scales as the TWL champ jumped up on the apron to argue with me. As I tended to Rip, he apparently tossed a set of brass knuckles to Mayhem (Kurt filled me in later) which allowed the giant biker to brain Mean Mark and make the pin for the three count.

Rip Chord and Mayhem Midden continued their assault on Mean Mark Green until the Trailer Park Kid and Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman ran down to make the save. Rip took the microphone as the Outlaws pulled Green to a standing position. “Two dead Outlaws,” Rip sneered, “first the phony Texas Outlaw and now Mean Mark Green. Rip Chord will personally take out all y’all.” I guess Rip forgot Mayhem’s role in defeating Green and demolishing the Texas Outlaw. F-Bomb chased off Rip and Mayhem, a flurry of cuss words, fists, and feet. As Rip and Mayhem beat a hasty retreat, Bowman took the microphone. “You think we’re dead mother****ers? We’re just getting the **** started, you sonofa*****! I’ll stomp on your ****in’ grave you piece of ****. Next show, Mean Mark’ll beat the **** out of you, Rip, you sonofa*****!” Trailer Park Kid merely nodded in agreement while Mean Mark Green, relying on TPK and Bowman for support, hoisted the rarely-seen handsign of the Texas Outlaws, the ‘hook ‘em horns’ also used by the University of Texas. The crowd erupted as the show came to a close. C

TWL All or Nothing is the next September show, and will feature the following bouts:

The Executioner v. Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman

F-Bomb would probably sell out his ****in' mother for $5,000. Will the whirling dervish of cursewords be able to unmask The Executioner and collect on Rip Chord's bounty?

Show Stealers v. Double Disaster

Will the high-flying Show Stealers pick up their first win in TWL or will they fall prey to a terrible, ahem, disaster?

Trailer Park Kid/Johnny Boy Tucker/Archie Judge v. The Border Runners (Carlos/Don Juan/Luis Reyes)

The Border Runners are in dire need of a win, but will it come at the expense of three of TWL's top young babyfaces?

The Executioners v. The Lords of War

What this show needs is more Executioners. Right?

Dog Collar Match: Pat Deacon v. TimberWolf

The next in Nero's gauntlet, Perfect Pat has to face-off against TimberWolf in the canine's speciality - the Dog Collar Match.

TWL Title: Mean Mark Green v. Rip Chord ©

Mean Mark has struggled against Rip Chord's lieutenant Mayhem Midden the past several months. Will his determination, guts, and experience be enough to dethrone the champion?

TWL All or Nothing

September, 1977

Irvine Hall (Midsouth)

Attendance: 2,914

The Executioner v. Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman

Billy’s Take: The Executioner came out first, seemingly the Krogan-esque version. The crowd did not know who his opponent would be, and they reacted with surprise when Floyd Bowman came out to collect Rip Chord’s $5,000 bounty. The Executioner seemed equally surprised. Well, as surprised as a masked man can appear. The match itself was relatively short and the story revolved around Bowman’s quest to wrench off the Executioner’s mask. The powerful Executioner repeatedly pushed F-Bomb away while Bowman remained equally persistent about trying to remove the yellow and black mask. It was like a huge brown bear pushing away a vicious wolverine. Bowman’s over-exuberance ended up costing him the match as he pinned the Executioner into a corner and attempted to wrench off the mask, but refused to break the hold at a five count. I had to call for the bell at that point and try to pull Bowman off of the Executioner. I succeeded enough for the masked man to escape to the back and Bowman to lose some of the bloodlust in his eyes.

As Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman tried to compose himself and return to the back, Johnny Boy Tucker came out to the ring, Shannon dutifully grasping his arm. “What was that about Floyd?” Johnny Boy accused. “Why are you takin’ Rip Chord’s side? Why are you tryin’ to unmask…him?” F-Bomb took the microphone from Johnny Boy. “Not sure I ****in’ hear you right Johnny. Did you just ****in’ ask me my ****in’ business?” “That’s exactly what I asked Floyd. Why are ya’ doin’ it?” “See its like this Johnny Boy. I’d do about anything for five ****in’ grand. I’d sell my ****in’ liver for half that…what’s left of the sonofa*****. I got no ****in’ loyalty to Krogan, if that is him under that piece of **** mask. I’m loyal to the mother****in’ Texas Outlaws. And that’s about ****in’ it. That ok with you boy?” “No Floyd it ain’t. It ain’t ok with me at all. Me and Mark go way back, he’s like a father to me. And you’ve been real good to me an’ all since Rip ran Mark outta town, but I cain’t just turn my back on someone like that. Not for all of the money in the world.” “Then I guess we ****in’ agree to ****in’ disagree Tucker, I guess we ****in’ agree to disagree.” Bowman walked off to the back, Johnny Boy Tucker staring with an anguished expression on his face. Show Stealers (Mr. Excitement/Red Falcon) v. Double Disaster (Eruption/Tsunami)

Billy’s Take: The huge young Samoan duo came out first, booed somewhat half-heartedly by the crowd. The Show Stealers came out next, receiving a more positive, if still muted, response. In the ring this was an extreme clash of styles. The high-flying, death-defying moves of the Show Stealers were countered by the awesome power of Double Disaster. Back-and-forth the match went, neither side really gaining a big advantage over the other. In the end, the Show Stealers stole one after hitting huge dropkicks on both members of Double Disaster, pinning them for the three count. After the match, the winners went to the back, energetically slapping high fives and accepting congratulations from the crowd.

Carlos Reyes, Don Juan Reyes, and Luis Reyes made their way out to the ring. Carlos took the microphone. “For three years I’ve been laying the foundation to bring the Reyes dynasty to this country,” he began, a thick Mexican accent making his promo nearly incomprehensible. “Now that that dream is a reality, me and my brothers are going to take it for all its worth. Call us what you like, the Reyes Brothers, the Border Runners, or La Familia. We’re bringing a revolution to Texas Wrestling, and bringing home mucho denaro to our family in Mexico.” Don Juan took the microphone, his accent less thick, but more oily. “That’s right Carlos, but you forgot one thing. I’m bringing something else to Texas Wrestling.” What? Syphilis? “Watch closely, Texas Wrestling fans, as the women swoon over the Latin Lothario Don Juan Reyes!” D+

‘American Made’ Johnny Boy Tucker/Trailer Park Kid/Archie ‘The Governor’ Judge w/Shannon v. The Border Runners (Carlos/Don Juan/Luis Reyes)Billy’s Take: The babyface team was a mix of the Master & Apprentice, the Texas Outlaws, and Team Texas, although each group had a history with the Reyes brothers. For his part, Don Juan Reyes was clearly more interested in the presence of Shannon at ringside than in the match, forcing Johnny Boy Tucker to regularly jump down from the ring apron to protect her from the advances of the Latin Lothario. That left his teammates victim to numerous 3-on-2 situations, making Trailer Park Kid visibly upset. In the end, it was this outside action that ended the match as Don Juan Reyes snuck around the side of the ring and grabbed Shannon’s hand, kissing it violently. Tucker, caught by surprise, totally alligator-armed the Trailer Park Kid, who was trying to tag him in. The distraction allowed the Border Runners to hit the TPK with the Double Fence Hop Legdrop, giving the Reyes’ a big victory.

The Prophet came out to the ring and took hold of the ring microphone. I really hope that this is going somewhere as his ‘promos’ are a bit tedious. “O my people, the time is near. The hounds are baying, the wolves are howling, the snakes of the earth are trembling in the midst of He who is coming!” As if on cue, the Black Serpent Cult slithered into the ring. Cobra hit a Solid Snake Stunner on the Prophet while Viper opened up the burlap sack containing the team’s pet snake/religious icon. Viper reverently poured the serpent onto the chest of the fallen Prophet. Rather than recoil in fear, the Prophet seemed energized by the touch of the snake and sat up slowly, his eyes rolled back into his head. He took hold of the snake, petted its back and carefully placed it back into its burlap sack as the Black Serpent Cult just stared in disbelief. C-

The Executioners v. The Lords of War (Warlord Agony/Warlord Pain) w/Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: The Lords of War came out first, docilely led to the ring by their sadistic manager, Professor Nero. The Executioners came out next – neither of them was the Krogan-esque version – and received a pretty strong reaction from the crowd. The match was a contrast in styles. The Executioners favored a mat-based approach while the LoW relied almost exclusively on power moves. As is often the case, the presence of Mycroft Nero at ringside swung the balance of power in this one. Nero jumped up on the ring apron and I dutifully ran over to have him return to the floor. In the meantime, he apparently slid his cane in to Warlord Agony, who brained one of the Executioners with it. This allowed the Lords of War to set up the other Executioner for the War Machine and the pinfall win.

After the match, Professor Nero ordered his Lords of War to unmask the fallen Executioners. Just as Agony nearly had one mask off, a third masked Executioner popped out of the audience and then a fourth from the backstage area. A voice from the locker room boomed over the loudspeaker system. “Are you sure which Executioner is which Agony? Wouldn’t want to get that wrong now would we? Nero wouldn’t be pleased…” A confused Agony stopped his assault, allowing the Executioners to slide out of the ring and escape to the backstage area, masks still intact. Clearly furious with the distraction, Nero pulled both Agony and Pain’s faces to his own. He screamed at them and then backhanded them both for not taking the masks. Then he slipped into his childlike state, mumbling something about lollipops and a Bit-o-Honey. A still-frustrated Nero then took the microphone, all traces of childlike bliss disappeared from his visage. “Pat Deacon, you chose the wrong night to cross me. You were fortunate last time to escape with your life against Rampage in a No Holds Barred match. And trust me, Rampage is being duly punished for his ineptitude. Tonight you have a stiffer test because tonight you face TimberWolf…in a Dog Collar match!” B

Dog Collar Match: ‘Perfect’ Pat Deacon w/Major W.G. Reginald III v. TimberWolf w/Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: In this match, each man wore a collar around his neck connected by a length of chain. As you would expect, this was a brutal affair. TimberWolf actually dominated early, clearly much more comfortable with the apparatus than Deacon. He dragged Deacon around, even climbing to the second rope to deliver a double-axe handle that drew a two count. But Deacon gradually found his footing and used leverage to reverse a TimberWolf Irish Whip attempt into a devastating lariat. Deacon demonstrated a new vicious streak in this one, inflicting as much pain as possible on his canine opponent. During this entire stage of the match, Professor Nero looked positively ecstatic, despite the fact that TimberWolf was pummeled. Odd. Deacon mercifully ended it with the Cobra Clutch and pointed to his head while staring at Nero, as if reminding Nero that he too could play mindgames. Nero just cackled in his own maniacal way and, clutching his treasures to his chest, beat a hasty retreat sans TimberWolf as Deacon slid out to give chase.

Mean Mark Green came out to the ring with the Trailer Park Kid, awaiting his title match against Rip Chord. He seemed tense and anxious as the champion, accompanied by the self-proclaimed ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ Mayhem Midden arrogantly strode towards the squared circle. Rip took the microphone. “Mean Mark Green, the enforcer of the Texas Outlaws, one of the toughest men on the planet, and not even close to Rip Chord’s level. Rip Chord is a bigger name, a better wrestler, and a tougher sonofa***** than you will ever be, Mean Mark. And tonight, he’s gonna prove it!” C+

TWL Title Match: Mean Mark Green w/Trailer Park Kid v. Rip Chord © w/Mayhem Midden

Billy’s Take: Mean Mark Green and Rip Chord went toe-to-toe in this one, with Green actually gaining the early edge, forcing Chord to retreat to the floor. He feigned leaving the arena, but Midden coaxed him back inside the ring. A few timely distractions from Chord’s bodyguard helped immensely, forcing Green to keep one eye on Midden at all times. A Rip Chord DDT ended the action after about 20 minutes of very solid wrestling.

I sat hunched over my notebook in the backstage area, making some final notations, when I heard the familiar sound of approaching cowboy boots that could only belong to the Lone Star Stampeder. “Howdy Billy,” Stampy began in his rumbling baritone, “how’s the notebook comin’?” “Fine I guess,” I stammered, “some of the matches tonight were really good Stampy. I thought Green and Rip put on a real good match and Luis Reyes looked solid out there again.” “Sure, sure Billy. Now what about Deacon and Wolfie? I wasn’t all that thrilled. Whaddidya give that? A C+? ‘Bout right I reckon,” his voice trailed off. “Billy, I been thinkin’. This here notebook shows that you’re a real go-getter. I’d like to chat with you for a couple o’ minutes about a finish for a match next month between the Lords of War and Pat Deacon. Mycroft wanted me to come up with somethin’ and I told him I would. Whaddya think? Got some ideas for me?” “Ummm, of course, yeah sure!” I was enthused. Stampy and I walked towards his office as my mind raced. So many ideas…

TWL Pistols Drawn is our first show in October and will feature the following matches:

The Prophet/Red Falcon v. Black Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper)

The Black Serpent Cult has repeatedly beatdown The Prophet, but last show's antics may have scared the snakes right out of their skin.

Archie Judge v. Luis Reyes

TWL's resident straight-arrow against the youngest and most talented Border Runner. Can Archie send Luis back across the border with his Martial Law?

Pat Deacon/Lone Star Stampeder v. Lords of War (Agony/Pain)

The next hurdle in Pat Deacon's quest to get his hands on Professor Nero. This time Deacon has found a partner to take on the gigantic Lords of War. Will the presence of Professor Nero turn the tide of battle?

The Executioner v. Don Juan Reyes

The Latin Lothario is the next man to try and collect Rip Chord's $5,000 bounty. Will good looks be enough to charm the Executioner out of his mask?

Floyd Bowman/Mean Mark Green/Trailer Park Kid v. Professor Nero/Rampage/TimberWolf

Nero is reportedly very angry with Rampage and TimberWolf for their inability to defeat Pat Deacon. Will he take his rage out on the Outlaws or will Texas' finest prevail?

TWL Tag Team Title Match: The Prophet/Red Falcon v. Black Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper)

Billy’s Take: Red Falcon and the Prophet came out to the ring first. I guess the Prophet is not only a soothsayer but a professional wrestler. Who knew? He stood calmly in the center of the ring, eyes rolled back in his head softly chanting, as the Black Serpent Cult crept to the ring. Red Falcon was noticeably more jittery and afraid of the serpentine duo than his partner. Inside the ring, the Black Serpent Cult’s experience and skill set allowed them to dominate the match, despite several impressive high-flying maneuvers from Red Falcon. After about eight minutes of back and forth, Cobra hopped down to the arena floor to attack Red Falcon. Suspecting that he was trying to distract me, I quickly turned to see Viper blow a ball of fire directly into the face of the Prophet. I went to call for the bell, but noticed that the Prophet seemed unaffected by the flames. He simply stood there as Viper stared in stunned silence. Finally regaining his senses, Cobra slid into the ring with a dazed Red Falcon and hit the Solid Snake Stunner on the youngster to make the pin. “He will have all of your answers, my friends,” The Prophet intoned into the microphone. “His glory will shine upon us all soon enough!” For the first time since entering TWL, the Black Serpent Cult seemed genuinely uneasy as they slunk backstage, their unwrapped burlap sack writhing as if in agony.

Captain USA came out to the ring, riling up the crowd with chants of "U…S…A" and handing out balloon animals (yes, balloon animals) to kids sitting around the ring. Out of nowhere, Carlos Reyes, Don Juan Reyes, and Luis Reyes jumped the Captain, beating him to the ground and kicking him repeatedly as he curled into a fetal position, the “U…S…A” chant passing his lips barely audible between moans. Then the cavalry arrived in the form of Team Texas. Archie Judge and the Lone Star Stampeder ran down to the ring, forcing the Reyes’ to stop attacking Captain USA as Luis and Archie prepared to face off next. D-

Archie ‘The Governor’ Judge v. Luis Reyes

Billy’s Take: As is often the case when the Reyes’ are involved, I had to send everyone except the participants in the match to the back. When Archie and Luis finally locked up, something clicked. These two had an unnerving sense of what the other was going to do, showing definite chemistry. Archie held his own against the talented Mexican grappler and apparently had the match won after hitting the Martial Law on Reyes. But after I slapped the mat a second time to count the pinfall, Archie stood up and admitted that earlier in the match he had thrown Reyes over the top rope on purpose – I thought he’d done it on accident and hadn’t called for the DQ at the time. Archie demanded that I call for the bell and award the match to Luis Reyes via disqualification.

The Executioner v. Don Juan Reyes

Billy’s Take: Apparently Don Juan Reyes is next in line to try and collect Rip Chord’s $5,000 bounty. The Latin Lothario and the masked man battled back and forth, the Executioner dominating the match physically, forcing Don Juan to constantly escape to the floor. In the end, the Executioner’s power was too much for Reyes and he finished off the match with the Power Lariat.

Rip Chord came out to the ring, his lackey Mayhem Midden in tow cracking his knuckles and generally looking menacing. “Well, well, well,” Rip began, standing over the fallen Reyes. “Another failed attempt. Looks like Rip Chord can keep the five grand in his pocket once again.” Suddenly Rip got pissed, ordering Midden to kick Don Juan and push him out of the ring. “And that makes Rip Chord very unhappy! Rip is paying good money to have Krogan unmasked and time and again someone ****s up. So enough games, enough play time. Its Rip Chord time! Next show, Rip Chord himself will show you pathetic losers how to unmask a Southern Legend.” C+

The Lone Star Stampeder/‘Perfect’ Pat Deacon w/Major W.G. Reginald III v. Lords of War (Warlord Agony/Warlord Pain) w/Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: Deacon apparently chose the Lone Star Stampeder as his tag team partner in Nero’s gauntlet challenge. Nero led his Lords of War to the ring, holding a wrapped-up towel caked with blood that held his little cache of treasures. This was a brutal match, with the youthful, but incredibly powerful, Lords of War using countless power moves on Stampy and Perfect Pat. But Deacon and the Stampeder generally kept control using their veteran wiles. When it looked like the tide had turned toward the team of Deacon and the Stampeder, Nero jumped up on the ring apron. Perfect Pat approached him and I quickly pulled him away, not wanting Nero to end the match with a cane shot to the head of Deacon. Instead, Professor Nero planted his cane directly into the forehead of Warlord Agony! Agony stumbled for a moment and then fell to the mat, a look of stunned disbelief etched on his face and blood trickling into his eyes. Warlord Pain stood unsteadily before dropping to his knees to check on his fallen comrade. With no alternative, I called for the bell, awarding the match to the Lords of War by disqualification.

‘Perfect’ Pat Deacon grabbed the microphone. “What the hell was that Nero?” Deacon asked the ‘Intelligent Monster.’ “Just the most brilliant, stupendous move of all time,” Professor Nero crowed, a slight sing-songy lilt in his voice. “I disqualified…you! So you failed to defeat all of my Disciples. You failed to complete my gauntlet. You may have defeated that painted freak Rampage and that fleabag TimberWolf, but you did not defeat my Lords of War! You lose Deacon, you…” Nero couldn’t finish the thought as a huge paw belonging to Warlord Agony grasped Professor Nero around the throat. Almost immediately, he began to turn a dark shade of purple. “What the…?” Nero croaked, “stop…you…imbecile,” he gasped between breaths. Agony kept his iron grip on Nero’s larynx and the Professor went limp. Deacon just stood and stared at this turn of events as the Lords of War walked backstage by themselves, leaving Nero in a pile gasping for air. B-

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/FloydBowmn.jpg

Mean Mark Green, the Trailer Park Kid, Johnny Boy Tucker, and Shannon all strode to the ring, Mean Mark as focused as ever, the Trailer Park Kid letting a lit cigarette dangle precariously from his lips, and Shannon holding daintily onto Johnny Boy’s left arm while Tucker flexed his right. Mean Mark and the Trailer Park Kid started warming up in the ring while Johnny Boy shouted encouragement. Then Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman came down to the ring by himself. Once Johnny Boy saw Bowman arriving, he whispered something to Shannon and they wished TPK and Mean Mark well before retreating to the back. Apparently Johnny is still pissed about Floyd trying to collect Rip Chord’s bounty last month. C-

Texas Outlaws (Mean Mark Green/Trailer Park Kid/Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman) v. Professor Nero/TimberWolf/Rampage

Billy’s Take: The Outlaws worked like a cohesive unit, despite the seeming disunity prior to the match. Nero’s team, on the other hand, constantly bickered with one another. I think Nero is still upset that TimberWolf and Rampage lost their matches against Pat Deacon last month. After about twelve minutes of back and forth, Professor Nero left his ‘proteges’ high and dry, walking backstage clutching his trinkets and ignoring TimberWolf’s pleas to come back to the ring. Instead, Nero backhanded TimberWolf and refused to acknowledge Rampage as he departed. The remaining Disciples were easy prey, falling victim to the Nowhere to Run from TPK and Mean Mark.

TWL Fight to the Finish is shaping up to be quite a card. Here are the advertised matches:

Lumberjack Match: Mean Mark Green v. Mayhem Midden

Mean Mark has a record of 0-1-1 against Midden. Can he even the score or will Rip Chord's bodyguard dominate this rivalry?

TWL Tag Team Title Match: Prophet/Mr. Excitement v. Black Serpent Cult ©

The Black Serpent Cult has been unstoppable since debuting earlier in the year. But the Prophet seems to have a supernatural hold over the champs. Will it be enough to bring about a title change?

Captain USA/Team Texas (Lone Star Stampeder/Archie 'The Governor' Judge) v. The Border Runners (Carlos/Don Juan/Luis Reyes)

The Border Runners/Team Texas feud has gone on for years. Will the inclusion of the great patriot Captain USA be enough to send the Reyes' back across the border?

Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman/'American Made' Johnny Boy Tucker v. Lords of War

Last show, the Lords of War 'turned' on Professor Nero. Or was that just another Nero mindgame? And can Bowman and Tucker work together after the mistrust built up after Bowman attempted to unmask Krogan, erm, I mean the Executioner?

'Perfect' Pat Deacon v. Rampage

Professor Nero refuses to face Pat Deacon one-on-one, contending that Deacon lost to the Lords of War and thus failed the gauntlet challenge. Nero is, however, upset that Rampage has failed him and set up this contest as a trial for his painted protege.

TWL Title: The Executioner v. Rip Chord

Rip Chord, apparently tired of failed attempts to collect on his $5,000 bounty, has decided to take matters into his own hands. Can he unmask the Executioner and find out, once and for all, who is under the yellow and black hood or will that identity remain a mystery?

Professor Nero refuses to face Pat Deacon one-on-one, contending that Deacon lost to the Lords of War and thus failed the gauntlet challenge. Nero is, however, upset that Rampage has failed him and set up this contest as a trial for his painted protege.

TWL Title: The Executioner v. Rip Chord

Rip Chord, apparently tired of failed attempts to collect on his $5,000 bounty, has decided to take matters into his own hands. Can he unmask the Executioner and find out, once and for all, who is under the yellow and black hood or will that identity remain a mystery?

Lumberjack Match: Mean Mark Green v. Mayhem Midden

The Texas Outlaws are decidedly mid-cardy. Midden isn't a main eventer either, but he's attached to the champ, and he needs to be a credible enforcer.

Some more foreshadowing is going to happen here, but when we get into the real payoff with these three, nobody named "Mr. Excitement" is going to be in attendance.

Captain USA is kind of the weak link here, no?

Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman/'American Made' Johnny Boy Tucker v. Lords of War

Floyd and Johnny Boy succumb to their squabbling, and the heels lay one of them out. Probably Floyd.

Pat is the real thing. Rampage is some chump with makeup on.

TWL Fight to the Finish

Irvine Hall (Midsouth)

October 1977

Attendance: 3,445

Lumberjack Match: Mean Mark Green v. Mayhem Midden w/Rip Chord

Billy’s Take: Midden came out first, dismissively striding past the booing fans. After Mean Mark entered, the lumberjacks emerged – six in total. The two remaining Texas Outlaws (Trailer Park Kid, Floyd Bowman) and Johnny Boy Tucker on the babyface side and Rip Chord and the Black Serpent Cult (Cobra and Viper) as the heels. There was a lot of jawing between the lumberjacks, but not any physical violence between them at the start of the match. Meanwhile, the match itself was quite physically violent as Mayhem and Mean Mark have developed an innate understanding of one another inside the squared circle. They brawled back and forth, both men being dumped to the outside, involving the lumberjacks, at different points in the contest. In the end, Midden went for his patented piledriver, but Green reversed it into a backdrop. Then Green connected with the Outlaw Driver for the somewhat surprising victory.

TWL Tag Team Title Match: Prophet/Mr. Excitement v. Black Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) ©

Billy’s Take: Prophet and his latest partner, Mr. Excitement, came out first, the former seemingly in a trance and the latter, umm, excitedly slapping hands with fans at ringside. The champions emerged next, Cobra toting the team’s ever-present burlap sack containing a snake/religious icon. The Black Serpent Cult clearly did not want to wrestle Prophet after last show’s terrifying exhibition and instead focused on isolating Mr. Excitement and cutting the ring in half. The overwhelming experience advantage eventually gave the Cult the advantage and Viper connected with the Snakebite Roundhouse Kick on Mr. Excitement for the win.

After the match, the Black Serpent Cult hastily grabbed their burlap sack and slithered to the backstage area while the Prophet, stood trance-like in the middle of the ring. He slowly grabbed the microphone. “O my children, the time is near. At 6 Feet Under, He will arrive and cleanse the sins of the wicked, clear the skies of dark clouds, and be a bright, shining beacon for the weary!” B-

Team Texas, Archie ‘The Governor’ Judge and the Lone Star Stampeder, along with Captain USA came down to the ring. As Captain USA began a “U…S…A” chant, Archie took the microphone. “Lots of folks have asked me why I disqualified myself last show. And I reckon that part of me just don’t know. Somethin’ in my bones told it just weren’t right to win like that. When I win, I want it to be fair and square, not by cheatin’. If I win by cheatin’ I ain’t no better than those filthy, slimy Reyes brothers. And tonight, me and the Lone Star Stampeder and our buddy Captain USA are gonna show ‘em that the truth will set ‘em free while the referee counts the one, two, three.” Ugh, Archie please don’t try to rhyme. Dr. Seuss you are not. D-

Captain USA/Team Texas (Archie ‘The Governor’ Judge/Lone Star Stampeder) v. Border Runners (Carlos/Don Juan/Luis Reyes)

Billy’s Take: The babyface team had the fans eating out of their hands. Captain USA does an exceptional job of connecting with the crowd, even if his in-ring skills are still quite raw, while Archie is developing into a reliable midcarder and Stampy is a Texas icon. Their opponents, on the other hand, are gaining repute as a lying, cheating, stealing group of un-Americans. Initially, the match went back and forth, with near-constant chants of “U…S…A” echoing around the arena. The cheating of the Reyes’ turned the tide of this one as Carlos apparently pulled down the top rope while Captain USA went to bounce off of them, sending Captain to a heap on the arena floor. After that, he was easy pickings and fell prey to a Double Fence Hop Legdrop from Luis and Don Juan while Carlos kept Stampy and Archie at bay.

Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman came to the ring, a contrite look on his face. “Johnny Boy Tucker, please come out here,” he began, amazingly uttering an entire phrase without a curse word. An apprehensive Tucker came out to the ring, Shannon following a step behind. “I ain’t got nothin’ to say to you Floyd,” Tucker stated. “Just hear me the **** out,” Floyd said, the stress of not cursing causing him to drop the PG-rated façade. “Listen, I’m gonna ****in’ say something that I don’t ****in’ like sayin’. I’m ****in’ sorry, Johnny Boy, truly the **** sorry. I forgot how much your ****in’ friendship means to me. ****. I got us a match against the mother****in’ Lords of War. Are you in?” Tucker looked to the crowd for an answer. They cheered and urged him on, though Shannon seemed less convinced, whispering something in Johnny’s ear and shaking her head no. Tucker gently nudged her away and took the microphone. “One chance, Floyd. One chance. If you disrespect our friendship or my friendship with Mark Krogan again, we’re through.” C+

Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman/‘American Made’ Johnny Boy Tucker w/Shannon v. Lords of War

Billy’s Take: The Lords of War seemed lost without Professor Nero as they slowly walked to the ring like (extremely muscular and angry) lost puppies. Shannon kept trying to convince Tucker to ditch Floyd, but he adamantly refused, repeatedly pointing one finger at her to remind her that he was giving Floyd one more chance. Bowman was the real star of this match, displaying his usual flurry of fists, headbutts, and ‘seven words you can never say on television.’ In the ring, the Lords still seemed a little lost, although their impressive power extended the match by several minutes. In the end, the team of Bowman and Tucker prevailed after Johnny Boy hit the Power Lariat for the pin. After the match, Tucker hesitantly extended his hand to Floyd. Bowman shook it enthusiastically and then flipped the bird to the crowd as they roared their approval.

Professor Nero and TimberWolf came to the ring, the latter cowering behind his mentor. They passed the Lords of War with nary a sideways glance, even though the Lords of War never took their eyes off their former leader and canine stablemate. Professor Nero opened a makeshift knapsack (constructed from Deacon’s bloodied towel) and removed a rolled-up newspaper. He took the microphone. “When a dog does something wrong, we hit him with a rolled-up newspaper. Don’t we?” Nero’s voice was a distant sing-song. “When he goes poopie on the floor, we hits the dog. When he goes pee-pee in the house we give him a smack. Why do we hits the dog? Because the doggie needs to know he was bad. A bad doggie needs to learn his lesson. LEARN YOUR LESSON MYCROFT!” He suddenly snapped out of it and dropped his voice several octaves while repeatedly smacking the newspaper into his hand. “Just like dogs need to learn lessons, so too do naughty wolfs.” He hit TimberWolf with the newspaper on his, umm, snout. Then he did it again. And again. TimberWolf cowered from Nero’s strikes but never retaliated. “Wolfie will learn his lesson. But Rampage is not a dog, nor are the Lords of War. They are not so easily cowed. Lords of War…I wash my hands of you. You are dead to me. Rampage, I see a redeeming quality, a psychosis that could be quite useful. So tonight you have your one shot at redemption. An opportunity to get back in my good graces. You have failed me once. Do not fail me…again.” The ‘Intelligent Monster’ dropped the microphone to stand at ringside for the next match, TimberWolf sitting obediently at his heel. C

‘Perfect’ Pat Deacon w/Major W.G. Reginald III v. Rampage

Billy’s Take: Over the past several months, Deacon has transformed into a more driven, more ruthless character as he seeks to punish Professor Nero. Nero’s presence at ringside infuriated Deacon, spurring Perfect Pat to viciously attack Rampage. Nero cackled maniacally, screaming “Yes Pat, embrace the madness. Destroy Rampage and fulfill your destiny!” Rampage seemed confused by Nero cheering on Deacon and the energy seemed to drain from him, allowing Deacon to connect with the Deacon Driver for the three count in a very good match.

TWL Title Match: The Executioner v. Rip Chord © w/Mayhem Midden

Billy’s Take: The (Krogan-esque) Executioner came out first, motioning several times into the crowd, apparently instructing any faux Executioners to stay in place as he entered the ring. Rip Chord came out next, looking around warily, anticipating the appearance of multiple masked men. When none came, he seemed to relax and focus on the task at hand. This was an impressive brawl, neither man willing to back down and Rip, despite his promise to unmask the Executioner, repeatedly attempted to pin his opponent. Back and forth they went, the fight spilling to the arena floor. In one such instance, Rip slid back into the ring to beat the ten count while Mayhem held onto the foot of the masked man, giving Rip Chord the countout victory.

Mayhem Midden, still holding onto the foot of the Executioner, grasped desperately at the yellow and black mask. Rip Chord looked confused, as if he had no idea Mayhem was going to try and unmask the Executioner alone. Rip suddenly seemed panicked and hurried to the outside, apparently to help his biker bodyguard. The Executioner, however, escaped the clutches of Midden and walked backstage, facing toward the ring to keep an eye on Rip Chord and pointing ominously at the champion. An obviously frustrated Chord threw a tantrum in the ring and even yelled something at Mayhem Midden before the heels left for the backstage area. C

4/6. Thanks for predicting Oregano. First time, no? In any case, I love the reasoning. It actually made me rethink the booking of several of the matches. I hate that I've made the Outlaws look 'mid-cardy' (and I admit that I have!). That will be changing very soon, especially when SWF rises to National (coming soon I'm sure) and raids my roster!!
