Headed by Jim Crockett Jr., and under the guidance of a new creative force, former wrestler George Scott, the promotion moved away from a tag team product to focus more on singles wrestling, though tag team wrestling continued to play a big part in the company.

JCP gradually phased out its multiple weekly television tapings in such cities as Charlotte, North Carolina; Greenville, South Carolina; and High Point, North Carolina and eventually consolidated their taping schedule into one shoot, a Wednesday night affair at WRAL in Raleigh, an agreement that last until 1981, when they moved to WPCQ studios in Charlotte (a station once owned by Ted Turner). By the early 1970s, JCP began to consolidate its various local television shows, doing one master taping at WRAL studio in Raleigh, NC, which was then syndicated to stations throughout the Carolinas and Virginia.

The local shows hosted by announcers like Big Bill Ward (from WBTV in Charlotte) and Charlie Harville (at WGHP in High Point) gave way to Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling (known briefly in 1978 as Mid-Atlantic Championship Sports). Mid-Atlantic was hosted by Bob Caudle (the longtime WRAL weatherman who handled the Raleigh wrestling duties). Caudle was joined by a rotating host of co-hosts (everyone from Les Thatcher to Dr. Tom Miller) before David Crockett stepped out of the ring after a short, uncelebrated career as a wrestler to become Caudle's color man. For a brief period, a secondary show called East Coast Wrestling was taped at WRAL. It was basically a repackaged version of 'Mid-Atlantic' and was announced by Big Bill Ward.

In 1975, JCP premiered a new syndicated "B-show" entitled Wide World Wrestling (renamed World Wide Wrestling in 1978). The original host of this show was former Georgia Championship Wrestling announcer Ed Capral. Subsequent Wide World/World Wide announcers included Les Thatcher, George and Sandy Scott, and Dr. Tom Miller. It was also hosted by the team of Rich Landrum and Johnny Weaver in the 1970s. In 1978, JCP later added a short-lived show called The Best of NWA Wrestling which was taped at WCCB studios in Charlotte (across the street from the old Charlotte Coliseum) and which featured then-active wrestler Johnny Weaver sitting down with top stars in a "coach's show" type environment, in which they commentated over 16 millimeter films shot at local arenas. Rich Landrum and David Crockett appeared on "Best Of" doing promo interviews for local arena shows.

JCP gradually began to expand, running shows in eastern Tennessee, parts of West Virginia, and Savannah, Georgia. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, they moved into Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio. Crockett and Scott also bought into Frank Tunney's promotion in Toronto, which ran under the Maple Leaf Wrestling brand name. Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling was seen on a station out of Buffalo, New York, which allowed the joint Tunney/Crockett/Scott effort to bring a full slate of shows to Ontario and upstate New York.

In 1980, Jim Crockett Jr. was elected President of the NWA. In 1981, Crockett moved his taping site from WRAL in Raleigh to WPCQ studios in Charlotte. Former (and future) Georgia Championship Wrestling booker Ole Anderson took over as his booker that year.

In 1982, Crockett partnered with wrestlers Ric Flair and Blackjack Mulligan to start a secondary company out of Knoxville, Tennessee, which operated under the brand name Southern Championship Wrestling. That group featured such stars as Mulligan, his son Barry Windham (then wrestling as Blackjack Mulligan, Jr.), Kevin Sullivan, Wayne Ferris, The Mongolian Stomper, Terry Taylor, Tim Horner, and others. The group lasted less than a year.

By the 1980s, the wrestling world was undergoing significant changes. The old NWA territory system was collapsing under pressure from the Vincent K. McMahon's World Wrestling Federation (WWF), which began to operate nationwide. Crockett had similar plans, envisioning a united NWA by purchasing or merging all of its member territories.

Ted Turner had realized the value of professional wrestling for cable television in the early 1970s. This was a smart move for Turner, as wrestling was a source of cheap, live entertainment, well suited to his cable network. He could run per inquiry ads (Slim Whitman albums, Ginsu knives, etc.) and take part of the sales profits just by bringing in a big audience through pro wrestling (which generally did not attract big ad revenue due to its perceived demographic). In 1982, Crockett ended his second year as NWA president.

By 1983, JCP went from recording its weekly shows in a television studio, to recording them live in arenas. After purchasing a mobile television unit for $1 million. We are now into April of 1983 and JCP is watched coast to coast on on various stations. TBS is the flag ship for JCP as it airs World Wide Wrestling on Sunday nights with a hour and half time show. Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling is held on Saturday afternoon with an hour long show.

What do I intend to do with this thing? Well I just want to have some fun. I am not going to be bound by the chains of history. I will add who ever I think I should add if I think it will bring some benefit to a story. I also will not be bound by history on by the characters on screen. Does this mean I will put a earring and shaving Ric Flair, no. But I do plan on changing some persona es.

I will have a couple of shows posted this week. The Crocket Cup will be up sometime sunday. My TV shows will be posted in a different format than my big events. The big events are meant to be extravganzas, so I will try to represent that by a longer posting.

Where am I starting at. I am starting about half way into April 1983. There have been changes to the database in an effort to help me tell a better story on screen.

Gang and Kininski seemed thrown together to me.

Round 2:

Piper/Orton vs. Steamboat/Youngblood

LOD vs. The Brisco Bros.

I guess you want the finals as well:

LOD vs. Steamboat/Youngblood

Wahoo McDaniel VS Ric Flair

If I did the tournament wrong just tell me and I will fix it.

Road warriors just making a name for themselves, so that one could either way, but I'm assuming you're going to build around them... The other tag matches seem like no brainers and should make for some interesting 2nd round matches... But I am going to go with The Brisco's beating Steamboat & Youngblood in the finals

NWA World Heavyweight Title bout

Wahoo McDaniel VS Ric Flair

It could be a nice shock to come right out of the gate and have Wahoo win, but probably not happeing

Hope you have fun with this... I'm a sucker for DOTT and will be reading along

David Crockett was about to answer.

Dory Funk: Shut up and listen when your being talked to by a gentleman from the great state of Texas. You know what, I don't care. Jack Brisco, this is my championship now, and there ain't no way your taking it. Now get your sorry carcass out here.

Jack Brisco VS Dory Funk Jr. ©

Jack Brisco comes running out to a hail of cheers. He dives under the ropes and is met by Dory Funk who begins to stomp away at the former champion. Eventually Jack gets to his feet and nails some punches on Dory to stall any further offense. We are reminded by Tony Schiavone that this match is for the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight title.

The match settles down as the two match hold for counter hold. Dory with a low blow which the ref did not see drops Jack to the mat. Dory Funk begins to stomp on Jack Brisco. Dory picks Jack up and throws him outside through the second rope. Dory rolls out and starts to lay some chop on Jack. Jack has finally had enough and fires back with some overhand punches that staggers Dory.

Dory Funk rakes Jack Brisco's eye and grabs a chair. Here come Jerry Brisco with a chair of his own. Just as Jack Brisco gets hit by Dory and his chair, Jerry Brisco drops Dory Funk with a chair shot of his own. Referee Stu Schwartz calls for the bell. We have a double DQ.

Jack Brisco drew with Dory Funk Jr. in 9:31 following a double disqualification.

World Wide Wrestling

Wk 2 Sunday April 1983

Alexander Memorial Coliseum

Preshow

Ric Flair, Terry Funk, Roddy Piper, Jimmy Valiant, Arn Anderson, Mike Rotundo, The Great Kabuki, and Jay Youngblood all meet with the fans before the show. They sign autographs, pose for pictures, and answer some questions.

Gordon Solie welcomes us to another great night of NWA action. And we are hours away from one exciting night. A graph shows up as he explains the pairings for The Crockett Cup. Eight tag teams will participate in a single elimination. Winner takes a purse worth $500,000.00. Round one will see Rowdy Piper and Bob Orton Jr. VS Jos Leduc and Ivan Koloff. The Great Kabuki and Magic Dragon will face off against the NWA World Tag Team Champions Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood. Jimmy “Boogie Woogie Man” Valiant and Bugsy McGraw will face off against The Road Warriors. And finally The Brisco Brother will square off against The Mid-Atlantic Tag Champions One Man Gang and Kiniski.

We come out of the graph and see Gordon Solie and Wahoo McDaniel there.

Gordon Solie: And this man will get a shot at the NWA World championship tonight.

Wahoo McDaniel: Finally I get a title shot after Flair has been ducking me for a year. I'm fired up I cant wait till The Crockett Cup, I want a piece of him tonight.

Ric Flair comes into the scene.

Ric Flair: Hold on there pal! You see this belt? It says I am the champion, not you. I make the rules not you. You have been second rate for years Wahoo. You see this suit? It looks good on me, not like that dumb bunch of feathers you have on your head.

With that Wahoo starts to tear into Ric Flair, breaks Flair's glasses, and tears up Flair's jacket and his shirt. And storms off as security arrive to separate the two. Flair gets up and grabs a mic.

Ric Flair: YOU WANT ME! Be careful what you wish for pal. You want me before Crockett Cup, you got me.

Our first match tonight pits a former world champion vs a current world champion as Harley Race goes against Ricky Steamboat. Ricky Steamboat is on fire after Race and him trade punches. Steamboat delivers a short-arm clothesline to Race. Race brings down Steamboat with a leg trip. Race measures Steamboat up and drops a closed fist. He covers and gets a one count. Race picks up Steamboat for a gut-wrench but Steamboat counters out and delivers spin kick to Race.

Race with a quick thumb to the eye. Swinging Neck-Breaker from Race takes down Steamboat. Race sets Steamboat up and DDTs him into the mat. Race grabs Steamboat's head and connects with a piledriver. Harley Race covers Ricky Steamboat's hooking the leg. Referee Tommy Young makes the count.

Harley Race defeated Ricky Steamboat in 7:51 by pinfall.

Rated: B-

After the match is over Harley Race walks over to Gordon Solie.

Harley Race: Once again I show the world why I should be getting a world title shot in the future. Flair its only time before you and I have one more showdown. And you know that makes you quiver at the thought. Because you know deep down you can't beat me.

Crockett Cup

Wk 2 Sunday 1983

9,333 Atlanta GA.

Alexander Memorial Coliseum

Dark Show. Come on its a dark show, I have to keep some secrets.

Gordon Solie, Bob Caudle, and Rich Landrum welcome us to the first ever Crockett Cup. And in case you missed it earlier, live and on TV Wahoo McDaniel really took it to Ric Flair nearly pinning him and perhaps gaining a measure of respect and a boat load of momentum coming into the world title bout tonight.

As if on cue Wahoo makes his way to the announcers table.

Wahoo McDaniel: Flair found out whats it like to be on my bad side. Who's the dumb Indian now Flair? I'm just getting started on the war path. And brother you better believe your in for a fight. Because the fight is coming to you. Tonight we are going to find out what has been on everybody's minds, who is the better man.

Rated: B-

With that he storms off. Out next is Jim Crockett himself. He wants to thank everybody out there for such a huge turn out to the first ever Crockett Cup. He reminds everybody that the winner of tonights tournament will receive a large pay out of $500,000.00. But he does have an apology to make. Jos Leduc was scheduled to be in tag action with Ivan Koloff tonight. Jos was involved in a minor car crash that will prevent him from competing tonight as the doctors refuse to clear him for action tonight. We will instead see a reunion of one of the most despicable teams to ever assemble. Greg Valentine and Ivan Koloff will reunite to reform Hammer and Sickle! The crowd boos. And we will see them in action next.

<p>Scoop Jones here with all of your wrestling insider news. I will be talking about some of the nations top promotions. Lets get started shall we.</p><p> </p><p>

Lets talk about America's top 5 promotions and lets start out with #5. WCCW or what is known in the Texas area as World Class Championship Wrestling. Since the beginning of April they have only had 1 roster change as the have decided to let Bronco Lubich go. No titles have changed hands in the month so far. The feud of the month looks like The Freebirds and Von Erich's have been featured a lot during the month. The Freebirds have fought off every challenge the Von Erich's have thrown at them. But this is not to say the Von Erich's haven't had any success as Kerry Von Erich has defended the Texas Championship against the Freebird Nation. There doesn't seem to be an end to this feud in sight.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Number 4 belongs to GCW or Georgia Championship Wrestling. They being shown on national level on WTPS. Notable roster changes include two signings in backstage roles. Saul Weingeroff who is being used as a heel manager and a has had some road agent duties as of late. George Scott who appears to be a road agent. There is a rumor floating around he may be in a power struggle with Ole Anderson for the head booker duties as well. At this time we can neither confirm nor deny these rumors. </p><p> </p><p>

Two of the vacant titles have been filled in the month of April. The National Tag Team champions are Tommy Rich and Mr. Wrestling 2. And GCW's TV champ is Ron Garvin who appears to be rocketing up their ranks. Larry Zbyszko has been headlining the month defending against Tommy Rich and Ole Anderson, but the crafty veteran has managed to hold on to the National Heavyweight Title. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Now this is where things get interesting. Number 3 is the AWA or American Wrestling Association. The aging dinosaur may be creaking back to life. First the roster losses, Billy Robinson, Blackjack Lanza, and Jesse Ventura have left the promotion. After a backstage incident at the WWF, which I will cover later on, AWA signed former WWF Champion Bob Backlund and SGT. Slaughter. Also Buzz Sawyer has been signed and appears to be sharing time between GCW and AWA. </p><p> </p><p>

The AWA has reactivated one of their older belts, the World Light Heavyweight championship with the champion being Mike Graham. Since signing on to the AWA the main event has featured Bob Backlund and Slaughter. Both sides have earned victories against each other in both single and tag team competition.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Number 2. Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling has been building steam to over take the number 1 slot. But has had to fend off the challenge posed by the AWA. The two promotions are rumored to be in a friendly competition. But in business can there be such a thing? </p><p> </p><p>

Rowdy Piper was lured away to the WWF. So Jim Crockett has spent the month signing some of the countries lesser known but talented group of wrestlers. Stan Lane and Steve Keirn will be coming in from the Memphis territory along with Bobby Eaton and a mystery man. We do not know if this is a big named talent like Jerry Lawler or Austin Idol, or if it is a lower card member. All we can confirm is there are four who have signed on to appear in various shows in the future. Gordon Solie has been signed on as an announcer for MACW's show on WTPS to lend creditability to the show and is known nation wide as the voice of the NWA. JJ Dillon and Tom Renesto have been added to perform road agent duties.</p><p> </p><p>

MACW held a special event called the Crockett Cup which drew a fantastic crowd with the team of Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood winning the single elimination tournament against a good crowd of teams. The Road Warriors participated but we can not confirm if it was a talent trade between the two NWA members or if they have actually been signed by Jim Crockett. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

And finally the number 1 promotion in the nation. WWF has sent shock waves through the wrestling world. Since taking over his fathers promotion, Vince McMahon appears to be hell bent on the destruction of not only his fathers way of doing business, but the territories way of doing business as well. </p><p> </p><p>

This has not gone over to well even amongst the rank and file of their own roster. After a heated exchange between Bob Backlund and Vince McMahon on a possible heel turn by their champion erupted backstage, many a wrestler voiced their displeasure of the way the company had been runned over the last few months. McMahon drew the line in the sand, and to those who crossed it were let go. Pat Patterson, Lou Albano, Swede Hanson, and Howard Finkel were let go almost immediately. After a poor showing a Tuesday taping, Superstar Billy Graham demanded more money. Vince fired him as well. But the last two firings Vince planned to do was just for spite. </p><p> </p><p>

Bob Backlund who many liked backstage was still fuming about the future plans Vince had for him. And Sgt Slaughter who looked to be in line for a major push, were unceremonious squashed and buried. Both said they were done doing “jobs” and were consequently let go. </p><p> </p><p>

Not all of the roster has sided with Backlund and “The Gang”. As Don Muraco and The Somoans have remained very loyal to Vince and his vision. Sika has been the WWF World Champion.</p><p> </p><p>

But all is not bleak for the number one promotion. They have added the smooth talking and trend setter Jesse Ventura, The battling Scotsman Rowdy Roddy Piper, Gino Hernandez, and there is a rumor floating around the WWF maybe in talks with the Freebirds as well.</p>

Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling

Wk 3 Saturday April 1983

Charlotte NC

Charlotte Park Center

1,973 attendance.

Preshow. I had been working on renegotiating with the network to up Mid-Atlantic to a hour and half show instead of an hour. My constant harassment has finally paid off.

A video is played at the opening with still shots and some of the memorable calls from Crockett Cup. We come out of the video and we are welcomed to the show by Bob Caudle and David Crockett. David thanks the fans in the area who drove all the way over to Georgia and hoped they all enjoyed the show.

David also addressed that his dad did not purposely leave The Funk brothers out of The Crockett Cup. But when the idea was ran by both Terry and Dory, both had told his dad that they were scheduled to be else where that night. David then went on to say because of the situation between Jimmy Valiant and Greg Valentine that those two would be in action later tonight. Greg Valentine and Dory Funk walks into the scene drawing boos from the fans.

Greg Valentine: Now hold on just one minute there Jr. Crockett. I just got off the phone with your daddy and made a switch to this so called main event you were about to announce. Dory has his brother Terry coming in here later tonight and we wanted a six man tag match. The Funks want the Briscos, and I want to rid the area of that malcontent Valiant. And you know what Jr Crockett? Your daddy agreed.

David said he would confirm that but if it is true than we have our selfs a main event today.

After being dominated by The Assassin in the opening minutes of the match. The Assassin had rammed Bugsy McGraw's head into the turnbuckle pad a few times. He stopped to see how much damage he had done to McGraw. The problem was McGraw kept slamming his own head into the turnbuckle 10 more times. He came up and did his “Curly” Imitation and came out of the corner and took The Assassin off of his feet with a clothesline. Bugsy then stuck out his arms and made like an airplane. Bugsy kept with this pose and bounced off the ropes landing a splash on The Assassin. Bugsy goes for the cover,,1,,,2,,,3!

The Briscos and Jimmy Valiant VS The Funks and Greg Valentine

The Main Event here featured six men with something to prove. The Briscos have not been themselves and are losing more than we are used to seeing. Jimmy Valiant who wants payback for Greg Valentine interference at Crockett Cup. The Funks are out to prove they are the dominate brother team. And Greg just doesn't like Jimmy Valiant. To say this match had bad blood brewing would be an understatement.

Jimmy Valiant taunts Greg Valentine to get in the match. Greg just stands there and tells Valiant to worry about who he is facing in the ring right now. Terry Funk worked over Jimmy Valiant at the on set of the match. Valiant finally made a tag after biting Dory Funk in the forehead and mad the hot tag to Jack Brisco. Back and forth The Brisco and The Funks went at one another.

The end of the match saw Jimmy Valiant going for a pin attempt on Dory when Terry Interfered. Jack And Jerry took offense and started working on Terry Funk. Greg Valentine while the ref was occupied with Terry and Briscos came in and kicked Jimmy Valiant in the head. Greg the slapped his own hands as if a tag was made and locked in a Figure Four Leglock. Both of the Funks battled the Briscos out side of the ring as the ref checked in on Valiant and Valentine. Greg uses the ropes for some extra leverage and Valiant taps out.

Greg Valentine and The Funk Brothers defeated Jimmy Valiant and The Brisco Brothers in 10:22 when Greg Valentine defeated Jimmy Valiant by submission with The Figure Four Leglock after blatantly cheating by holding on to the ropes for extra leverage.
