vs. Ford Gumble & Powell

 

Adrian Garcia’s boys got a taste of classic MAW in this one as they went two-on-two with the former tag team champions themselves, The Awesomeness. All four men got in a good bit of offense in this one, and Ford and Powell showed off some impressive agility as they flew around the ring with the much younger Awesomeness. Eventually, the match broke down and all four men found themselves brawling in the ring. Cannonball took a running start at Powell, but was back dropped up and over the ropes to the floor below for his troubles. Now, with Stardust alone with the two warriors, the match went downhill quickly, and Stardust eventually succumbed to an impressive Motion Sensor/Quick Draw Kick (Savate kicks) combo.

Self entitlement meets hard work...

 

Jay was lounging around in his locker room with Casey Valentine and Brett Starr when Rip Chord suddenly burst into the room, causing Jay to jump up to his feet.

 

Rip Chord: That’s right, you better get on your feet when I walk in!

 

Jay Chord: Dad, what are you--

 

RC: Shut up! I told you to prove to me that you weren’t a loser, and you managed that, somehow. Can’t say that about these two goons you hang out with though. But now, like an idiot, you risk it all because you want your moment to be bigger? That’s horse ****, Jay! I didn’t become a legend by doing stupid crap like this, and you sure as hell won’t, either. You better pray you win tonight, and the next night, and the next night. And then, pray that you have enough left in the tank to take out that bastard Vessey, too, because you’re gonna be running on fumes by the time Night of Champions rolls around if Vessey’s got any brains in his head. Do you understand me?

 

JC: [Looking at the ground] Yes sir…

 

RC: Good. And you two! [Rip points to Valentine and Starr] You goons better find a way to make yourselves useful.

vs. Gorgon w/ Grinn for the Women’s Championship

 

We’ve seen this match before, so everyone already knew to expect fireworks as soon as the women got in the ring together, and that’s exactly what they got. York, incensed over Gorgon & Grinn’s recent corruption and general bad influence over MAW’s women’s division, threw herself at the beast of a woman standing across from her. Gorgon responded in kind with some heavy shots of her own, and the two traded blows throughout the match, with neither of them really establishing any prolonged offense. Grinn, meanwhile, stalked around the ring erratically, bursting into the odd fit of laughter periodically, or randomly snapping at an innocent fan. The end of the match came as Gorgon forced York into the corner and began to rain down heavy blows on the champion. As the referee tried to pull her off, York sank down, and Gorgon switched to throwing knees at her opponent. Grinn, jumping with joy, kept screaming “Hit her again! Hit her again!” on the outside, and Gorgon did. So much so that the referee disqualified her, awarding the match to York as a result.

 

York retains via DQ beat down, 66

 

Gorgon didn’t seem to mind the result. She kept on beating York mercilessly, eventually dragging her out of the corner and nailing her with a Hydra Bomb (power bomb). Grinn, meanwhile, slithered over to the champ, and hoisted her up onto her shoulder before dropping down, executing her brutal Spinal Trauma move (Canadian Backbreaker). Gorgon silently followed the devious masked woman to the back as the ringside doctor checked up on York.

The odd couple

 

Lee Rivera was sleeping half-in half-out of a knocked over trash can, still wearing what was left of last night’s clothes when Eddie Cornell happened upon.

 

Eddie Cornell: Effin hell, Lee!

 

Rivera, his goggles covering just one eye, awoke with jerk.

 

Lee Rivera: Wha? Where am I!?

 

EC: You're at the arena, idiot. Now I told you that if I had to find your sorry arse like this one more time that was it, and I meant it. But you had to show up at that bash last night, and look where you wound up.

 

Lee looked around, confused.

 

LR: [Grinning sheepishly] Bro, I’ve got no clue where I wound up. But I do have a clue about that party, and it was sweeeeeeeeeet! Or, at least, what I can remember of it…

 

EC: Bloody moron…

 

Lee’s chuckling, just as a shrill cry is heard from off camera.

 

??: There they are!

Lisa Bowen and Behemoth, who’s still huffing and puffin, presumably over Rivera’s juvenile prank from Showcase.

 

Lisa Bowen: Don’t just stand there, get him! No one humiliates my client!

 

Behemoth clumsily started forward to the duo, who looked upon him with horror.

 

EC: Run!

 

LR: Beat feet, man!

 

The two took off, Behemoth right on their heels, crashing through any obstacle that dared get in his way.

vs. Trent Schaffer & Rob Wright for the Tag Team Championship

 

Culture Shock made the open challenge, and the recently down on his luck Trent Schaffer and protégé Rob Wright answered it. The Primadonnas, as they declared themselves prior to the match, did well against the new champs, too, and Schaffer proved that his high flying skills were right up there with Fire Fly’s. The champs, to their credit, looked very strong in their second defense, and when Fire Fly took to the air to hit a Sky High Fire Fly (Shooting Star Splash), they really established that they’re here for real, and their previous matches weren’t flukes.

After the match, the camera cuts to Mitico backstage, watching the match finish on a monitor. He smiles.

Taking one HELL of a beating...

 

We cut next to a shot of a dingy ring placed in the middle of a dimly lit gymnasium. A small, but bloodthirsty pack of fans crowd around the ring, begging for more violence. In the ring is a familiar face, or mask, if you will. Former MAW Traditional champion Ant-Man is locked in bloody conflict with a pair of particularly sordid individuals, who are more than willing to appease the crowd. Viciously, they punch, kick, bite and claw at Ant-Man, and his famous mask even gets ripped in the process. A baseball bat is tossed into the ring from a fan, and one of them takes it in hand, advancing on Ant-Man. But the diminutive warrior shoots forward, hitting the man with a monstrous lariat, and sending him to the mat. Quickly, he snatches up the bat himself and turns on his other opponent, doubling him over with a shot to the gut. From here, he cracks the bat across his back, and he crumples, allowing Ant-Man to cover him for the win. Exhausted, he rolls off his opponent, breathing heavily as he lays in the middle of the blood-spotted ring. A crazed looking ring announcer jumps to his feet excitedly, proclaiming wildly “The mighty Ant wins again!” as the fans roar their approval, their appetite for violence sated temporarily.

The camera zooms in on one in particular, however. The smug look on his face identifies him immediately as Adrian Garcia. He stands along side Sayeed, who wouldn’t himself be out of place in this environment, save for the large amount of money that he’s collecting from various other patrons.

Johnson was on the defensive from the beginning. This may have been a triple threat, but they way The Heartbreakers approached made it seem much more like the handicap match coming up next than anything else. They put Johnson through the ringer with their extended beat down, using all of their combined years of experience to break him down to almost nothing. The almost sad beating came to an end when Raphael hoisted Johnson up on his shoulders, and Johnson somehow slipped back behind him, delivering a dropkick, knocking him out of ring! As Sensitive came charging at him, Johnson caught his arm and dragged him down, locking in the Carolina Crossface and forcing the tapout!

 

Johnson wins, 67

 

Johnson remained in the ring after the match as the Heartbreakers trudged up the ramp, bickering. He let a smile creep onto his face, but that was quickly wiped away as a smoky figure appeared on the big screen.

??: I’m glad you won, Jared. I really am. It let’s the plan just keep on rolling.

 

Jared Johnson: And who the hell are you supposed to be? Are you ‘him?’

 

??: [Chuckling] That I am, Jared, that I am. But I’m much more than your typical shadowy figure. I’m an intellectual, Jared, carrying out a plan. And that plan is to lead you to your own self destruction. It’s nothing personal, Jared. Many people say that, but for me, it holds true. This really is just business. I’m making my mark in this business, and I’m making it through you.

 

JJ: You wanna make your mark? Come on out and do it!

 

The crowd goes wild at the challenge, especially after watching their celebrated battle it out only moments before.

 

??: Jared, Jared, Jared. You know that won’t happen. You may not be as smart as myself, but you do have some brains in that curly head of yours. I told you I have a plan, and I intend on following through with it. The time for me to reveal myself has not yet come, but I can guarantee that it will be soon. In the meantime, Jared, keep on winning. Don’t disappoint me, now.

And now for the real handicap match. Jones and Fforde demanded this match after Patriot decimated them on Showcase, and Black Flag was all too willing to appease them. There wasn’t much to this one aside from a small bit of offense from the dojo grads at the beginning. Patriot was quick to shut them down, tossing them both around the ring with hard, heavy hitting suplexes and brutal looking, stiff as all hell punches and chops. Throughout the massacre, Patriot strolled leisurely around the ring, chuckling to himself before he decided it was time to pounce upon either Jones or Fforde. Finally, mercifully if you will, he finally ended it with an American Suplex to Jones.

JC: It’s been a long time since I last got a one on one shot at the title. A little too long, if you ask me. At Showcase, I lost to Ota, and lost the chance to challenge for that belt again. Tonight, I get to redeem myself. Jay Chord, I don’t care who you are. I don’t care that you’re the bosses son. Tonight, I’m gonna make you tap, and I’m gonna take your title shot. It’s gonna be me at Night of Champions, Jay Chord, not you.

Even though Cam Vessey gave Jay the so-called “easy match,” Chord still had his hands full with the tenacious veteran technician Cattley. Both men got in a ton of offense in this long matchup. There were so many near falls that the fans were even getting a workout as they launched themselves to their feet every time someone kicked out. As the match wound down, Cattley called for a sharpshooter, but as he locked it in, Brett Starr ran down to the ring, jumped up on the apron and began yelling at the ref. With the referee distracted, Casey Valentine slid in from behind and hit Cattley with a Valentine's Kiss before beating a hasty retreat. Still a little bit loopy, it took Jay a moment to cover Cattley, but he was still able to get the three count and win it.

The champion and the latest in his list of challengers

 

Walking to the ring before his match, Cameron Vessey rounds a corner and comes face to face with The Great Ota.

 

Cameron Vessey: [smiling] Huh. I figured you for one that did all of his talking in the ring.

 

Ota said nothing, but produced a small rolled up sheet of paper from the sleeve of his gi. He handed it to Cam and watched as he read.

 

CV: ‘Like the unpredictable weather, my fury is strong. What you see is the calm before the inevitable storm, and it wishes you a prosperous life after you are forced to part with the precious metal you covet so much.’ Huh. Sounds almost poe--

 

Cameron looks up to find no one standing across from him.

 

CV: [Smiling slyly] Alright then, stormy. Let’s see what you got.

vs. The Great Ota for the World Heavyweight Championship

 

Much like they’re previous encounters, these two tore the house down. From the onset, Ota set a furious pace to the match, and for much of the 28 minute match, Vessey was able to keep right up with him. Of course, when the champ took control, he did slow down a bit, taking his time and catching his breath. One particularly nice spot occurred when Ota knocked Vessey to the outside, took a running start, and launched himself through the ropes at the champ, only to have Vessey dive sideways and go crashing into the ring barrier. That crash and burn plagued him for the rest of the match, and Ota never fully recovered from it, his neck nagging at him for the rest of the match. Seeing this, Vessey pounced, and when he eventually hit the Vessey Driver, Ota was unable to kick out of the following pin and the match was over.

When he told me to meet him at a bar, I was surprised. I was under the assumption that every bar for sixty miles in every direction had his picture at the entrance with a big red “X” over it. But as the cab pulled up to it, I understood why. “Bubs” sat twenty miles outside of Charlotte, and if you drove by it, you’d be hard pressed to see it for a bar. The place had no marking, no parking lot, no neon signs screaming at you for drinks. For all intents and purposes, it looked like just another abandoned building in the middle of no where. This wasn’t exactly the type of place that would care who frequented it.

 

I walked in and saw him immediately. The place was so cramped that it would be hard not to. He sat in a tiny booth, four cheap beer bottles in front of him. Two were already empty, and he was working on the third. I strode up and sat down across from him. Before saying anything, I reached for one of the bottles, but he cut me off before I even touched it.

 

“Those are mine,” he said calmly. “You can get your own.”

 

Sighing, I did. A cheap one, like his, but I don’t exactly have expensive tastes. As I took a swig, I looked at the man sitting across from me. Something was different about him tonight. The scowl he usually wore was gone. His shaggy, greasy hair had been washed and brushed, swept to one side. He still looked like kind of a prick, but a clean one. The anger that was usually boiling inside of him had cooled. He seemed…calm. That continued to radiate as we exchanged small talk, doing our best to remain as impersonal as possible.

 

“So,” I said. “Why here?”

 

“Why not?” he replied. “I like to drink, and this is one of the only places around that’ll serve me.”

 

“Alright, then. What did you wanna talk to me about, anyway?”

 

He snorted.

 

“What?”

 

“You. You’re one of the only people in that locker room that would ever even dream of talking to me like you did at Battle, and now you’re trying to pretend like you don’t know why we’re here.” He finished off his fourth and ordered another.

 

“I was pissed off. I didn’t mean it. I was just trying to get into your head, or…something. I don’t know.”

 

“Bull ****. Both of us know that everything you said, you meant. No one’s ever said any **** like that to me before, man. My own dad wouldn’t even do it, and he’s supposed to be some kind of hard ass. All I ever get from him is ‘Good job, Jay. Keep it up. You’re the best.’ It’s all bull ****.”

 

“I don’t know what to say,” I said, my voice weak.

 

He swirled his beer around in his bottle, looking down at it. “I stopped doing the coke, ya know?” He said, still looking down.

 

“What?”

 

He looked up at me, his eyes sad. “You don’t remember? Two years ago, in that ****ty bathroom. You caught me buying my ****, and I couldn’t take it. You know I tried to get you fired?”

 

“Oh,” I said. “Oh, yeah. Look, I don’t harbor any ill feelings or anything over that.”

 

“I wouldn’t care if you did,” he replied. “It’s hard. I get the urges so damn bad. You know how it is. And I try to be strong, ya know, just stay away from it? But it’s hard. I'm very happy the segment with Jay's been well received. I wanted to wrap that whole storyline up nicely, and, while Jay's still a dick (I haven't edited his personality...yet) I wanted to present a new side to him that people don't normally ever see. The ending line I did because I can work with that when Rip finally retires, whether Jay takes over or not.

This match was made to showcase some of MAW’s young tag teams, and they all did their best to take advantage of the opportunity and show the crowd what they’re made of. Rivera dodged, dipped, ducked, dived, and dodged all over the ring, frustrating Behemoth to no end. Behemoth did catch him at times, though, and he was devastating when he did. With a running boot, he turned Rivera inside out, causing the Thrill Seeker to flip over backwards. A lot of history between these men. At one point or another, they were all in factions with at least two of the others, and that showed in the match. Every man had an answer for everything that was thrown at them, they knew each other so well. For the second show in a row, Lenny Brown’s come up against a pretty big challenge in one of MAW’s tag team legends, and he didn’t disappoint, hanging in with Howard throughout the match up. Howard, with his newly focused persona took the beating right Brown, plowing through him with a number of powerful shots and slams. Despite this, Brown was able to turn the tables at multiple points, displaying some very impressive athleticism in the process. Kinuye came out with a chip on her shoulder, choosing to forego her usual technical approach and fight tooth and nail against the psychotic Grinn. As the match wore on, the Japanese import actually proved to be quite the capable of taking on Grinn. In between the ticking time bombs erratic attacks, Kinuye was able to wear her down to the point of exhaustion. In the end, though, Kinuye made a mistake as she lifted Grinn up to the top rope and followed her to the great height. Grinn, her manic mind making some sort of sense for once, pushed Kinuye off the turnbuckle, but the young lady was able to land on her feet. Unfortunately for her, Grinn was wild enough to leap off of the top turnbuckle and latch a triangle choke on Kinuye as she did so. After the match was over, Grinn refused to break the hold, and Gorgon did what she could to keep the referee from forcing her to let the young lady go. As this happened, Sara Marie York made an appearance, sprinting down to the ring. As the crowd went wild, everything seemed to happen at once. Gorgon intercepted her with some heavy shots, while Grinn broke her hold on Kinuye and got to her feet. Ant-Man was able to avoid most of the blows, but Adrian Garcia still remained worried on the outside. In a twist, it was the champions that made the challenge to the challengers for this match. Culture Shock seem intent to prove to everyone that they’re fighting champions, going so far as to look for the hardest matches they could find. They did so this time around, taking on the dangerous journeymen team of Waldorf and Statler. In a stark contrast to the Culture Shocks hit and run tactics (referring to their quick, bruising style), the Generals took the match to the mat, where they worked over the champs with a series of holds. This strategy proved extremely effective, but nothing they seemed to do could break the champ’s will. Fire Fly especially was bent in some of the most unnatural ways seen yet, but he refused to tap out. When Waldorf lifted him onto his shoulders, looking for the Salad Toss (Fireman Carry Slam), Fly used one last bit of energy to flip out and pull Waldorf over with a hurricanrana. The two men crawled to their corners, but it was Fly who made the tag first, and Apollo was able to sprint to the other side of the ring and cut Waldorf off. Taking advantage of the already tired man, he soon hit the Island Driver to score the win. Ota started the match out effectively by kicking at Findlay’s legs, attempting to bring the big man down to size. After the opening exchange ended with a running dropkick to Findlay’s knee, he succeeded, and proceeded to wear him down with stomps and a couple of nifty little submissions. When he tried to put Findlay to sleep with a sleeper, though, the big man managed to get to his feet and slammed Ota down. Using his trademark plodding offense, Findlay began work over Ota, using a particularly brutal power slam in the process that almost put Ota down for good. Some bitter feelings came boiling to the surface as this match began. Patriot took control early after a rather heated early exchange that featured some pretty rough chain wrestling. The big bruiser wasted no time in going to his bread and butter, hitting a series of chops that staggered Golden before slamming him down hard. Patriot then proceeded to work over Golden, with a power slam into the turnbuckle being the highlight. Patriot, as he so often does, then began to grow overconfident. As he took his time going after Golden, the Canadian was able to fight back, and the two began to jockey for position. Finally, Golden was able to secure his hold on the match reigns, and he controlled the pace for a good while with some very nice mat work, wearing down Patriot. This strategy was very effective for a time, until Patriot decided he’d had enough and rolled out to the ringside area. Golden quickly followed him, but found himself engaging in a slug fest when Patriot began throwing bombs his way. The basic exchange slowly began to grow in intensity and never stopped. The two were beating the hell out of each other, and their disregard for the match was plain when they were both counted out. Six of MAW’s greatest competitors went toe to toe in this match, and no matter who won, the winner was the fans. For the better part of twenty minutes, this match was set at a break neck pace, and neither team was ever really able to establish any prolonged, despite working in some impressive offense from all sides. Finally, as the match clock wound down, it was El Mitico who finally stepped up. The luchadore took Casey Valentine down with a brain buster and effortlessly floated over, slapping on a cross armbar, causing Valentine to violently thrash about on the mat. Just before Valentine tapped out, Jay Chord threatened to get into the ring, distracting the referee and causing him to miss the tap out. Some may consider an opponent having a corner man an unfair advantage, but for Jared Johnson it was just business as usual. Despite Wright’s continued attempts at interference, the champ was left unfazed by his presence. In fact, it was JJ that had the first series of offense, taking Schaffer down and using mat work to wear him down. After Schaffer reached the ropes, forcing JJ to break a Boston crab, Johnson attempted to go back to work, but was cut off by a thumb to the eye from Schaffer. Schaffer followed up with a head scissors before hitting a nice senton, clutching his back afterwards. This was followed by a good series of offense from Schaffer that saw Johnson get in a few bits of offense, only to be shut down repeatedly. Finally, Johnson was able to get back in the match when Shaffer turned to run the ropes. Johnson followed him, and when he turned around met a forearm to the face that dropped him immediately. This led to a quick, fast paced series between the two men that saw Schaffer come back once again after hitting a super kick. Tired and worn, he slowly climbed up to the top turnbuckle. Looking down at Johnson, he leapt off, looking for a flying clothesline…but Jared caught him! He caught him in the Carolina Crossface! </p><ul><li>I took a gamble with putting the traditional title match as the main event, but I didn't want to make the six man tag, which would have served ably as a Showcase main event, as the top match. Johnson and Schaffer have put on 70 rated matches before, and I was hoping they would again, but, alas, it wasn't meant to be.<br /></li><li>I'm basing the whole Adrian Garcia stable off of a favorite show of mine, and if you've picked up on the influence, you'll have a basic idea of where it's going from here. I will say this: expect to see Ant-Man in real matches again.<br /></li><li>Ota's a little bit upset with me right now since he loses so damn much, so I figured I'd feed him my resident giant jobber Findlay to give him a decisive win. He was pleased with the result, but he's still at the second worst mood. I'm wondering right now if I should even rehire him due to a very good signing I've just made...<br /></li><li>With his recent performances, I felt like it was time to have Eddie Howard break out a little. While I ditched the dreadlocks and outfit, I kept the confident persona and Mr. Amazing nickname, just so he would have some personality to go off of still.<br /></li><li>I made mention of SMY's bad fall intentionally. Stay tuned to find out why...<br /></li><li>El Mitico's kind of fallen to the wayside recently. I'm actually struggling to find something for him to do, just because he's such a good wrestler and I want to keep him around. I'm hoping I find something good for him by Night of Champions,and it might just have something to do with my signing that I mentioned.<br /></li><li>In case you haven't noticed, MAW's moved out of the Biker Museum and into Centerpiece Bridge. I went in and calculated the expected attendance (2700 or so) and the rent cost, and it came out to making me more money than the Biker Museum. So for now, we're staying in Centerpiece Bridge for good.<br /></li><li>I feel like my roster's getting really bloated. I've let a bunch of people go due to unruly contract demands and overall uselessness, but I still feel there's too many. Mostly, I feel like it comes from the main event, which has become quite a bit stale. I'm hoping that a bunch of my midcard cats that I'm building right now will be able to make the leap to main eventers, and soon.</li></ul><p></p><p>

Unfortunately, Emma Bitch retired, and I failed to see her potential as a manager at the time I released her. As for Miss Emily and Steve Flash, they both wanted 2000 per show at their last negotiation, plus a downside, which I just couldn't afford. I've only just reached $225,000 three years in!

 

And Ota's only working for me right now. His last match for another promotion was in September '11 when he lost a CZCW title match to James Prudence, rating a...76.
