2 events announced, signings, Strikeforce: Nashville results

Strikeforce announce next two cards.

May 15th, will see Strikeforce make its debut in New Jersey, as the Louis Brown Athletic Center will host Strikeforce: Meadowlands, headlined by a Heavyweight title match as Fabricio Werdum (13-4-1, 2-0 Strikeforce) will take on Dutch champion Alistair Overeem (32-11, 2-0 Strikeforce). One of these men will get their third victory, the other, his first Strikeforce loss. The welterweight championship will also be defended, as the older Diaz brother (Nick, 21-7, 3-0 Strikeforce) will defend his title against the British Jim Wallhead (18-5) who's making his Strikeforce debut.

Then Strikeforce will head back to the Save Mart Centre in Fresno, CA with a CBS TV Special. Brett Rogers (10-1, 2-1 Strikeforce) coming off a loss against Fedor Emalienko, will look to get back to his winning ways, as he takes on former pro wrestler Daniel Puder (8-0, 0-0 Strikeforce). The co-main event will be the final of a mini tournament held that very night between 4 undefeated female Welterweights. #1 P4P women fighter Megumi Fuji (19-0, 0-0 Strikeforce) will take on Kerry Vera (2-0, 1-0 Strikeforce) and the P4P #2 Sarah Kaufman (10-0, 2-0 Strikeforce) will take on Zoila Frausto (4-0, 1-0 Strikeforce)

Strikeforce signing big names

Strikeforce has been on a major signing session, including the undefeated Daniel Puder, who is set to headline Strikeforce on CBS, as well as the current heavyweight champion's older brother, Valentijn Overeem. Other notable signings include undefeated women such as Megumi Fuji and Aisling Daly. Jim Wallhead, Alex Reid, Paul Sass and Tom Watson have all been signed in the hope to bolster the org's audience in the UK.

In bigger news, the UFC have lost 2 big names, as both Rafael Dos Anjos and Luis Cane have jumped ship to Strikeforce.

Strikeforce: Nashville

Preliminary fights

  • Zak Cummings def. Cory Devela by KO (2:50, R3)
  • Chris Culley def. Maurice Eazel by Unanimous Decision

Jason Miller vs Robbie Lawler

A good fight for all lovers of the ground game, as these two Middleweights spent most the fight taking each other down.

Miller's conditioning started showing though, after taking the first 2 rounds, he lost the third.

But all 3 judges still scored the fight 29-28 for Jason Miller, as he defeats Robbie Lawler and might take a step towards the Middleweight Championship.

Jason Miller def. Robbie Lawler via Unanimous Decision

Strikeforce Middleweight Championship

Gegard Moussasi © vs Muhammed Lawal

The first of 3 title fights, as the Dutch-Armenian champion took on undefeated "King Mo" Muhammed Lawal, who made quick work of it, taking Mousasi down and releasing punches on him, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Muhammed Lawal def. Gegard Moussasi by TKO at 2:31 of Round 1 to win the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship.

---

Strikeforce Lightweight Championship

Josh Thomson © vs Gilbert Melendez

Lasting just over 20 seconds longer than the first title fight, unlike Moussasi, Thomson retained his title, after Melendez pounded on him for a minute, Thomson caught him in a guillotine and forced him to tap out.

Josh Thomson def. Gilbert Melendez by submission at 2:53 of Round 1 to retain the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship.

Strikeforce Middleweight Championship

Jake Shields © vs Dan Henderson

With one title retained, and another one that changed hands, it was up to Shields and "Hendo" to deliver another good fight, and they did. Going back and forth, they got to round 2, when Henderson got on top, and tried to pass guard, but instead, got caught with another Guillotine Choke, making Henderson tap out.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

UFC 110: GSP vs. Serra III

  • UFC 110 kicked off with Rafael Dos Anjos knocking out Terry Etim with only 27 minutes left in the fight, this however proved to be Dos Anjos' last punch in the UFC, as shortly after the fight, he announced he signed a contract with Strikeforce.
  • Other UFC 110 prelims winners include Tomasz Drwal, Matt Veach and Nate Diaz.
  • Frank Mir took a big step in getting another shot at Lesnar's title, as he took only 2:15 minutes in forcing undefeated Shane Carwin to tap out.
  • Meanwhile, in the lightweight division, KenFlo took a big step up the ladder after getting a decision victory over Frankie Edgar.
  • Brandon Vera and Wanderlei Silva were also victorious, TKO'ing Thiago Silva and Michael Bisping, respectively.
  • In the main event, GSP took the rubber match, as he won the 3rd bout between himself and Matt Serra, in only 1:05 of the first round, to defend the Welterweight Championship by TKO.

UFC Fight Night: Herring Vs Gonzaga

  • Prelim winners: Gerald Harris, Jacob Volkmann, Rory Markham & Luis Cane
  • Sean Sherk and Keith Jardine proved they still have what it takes, Sherk submitting Gray Maynard and ending his undefeated streak, and Jardine lasting 15 minutes to win a decision over Charlie Brenneman.
  • A man who didn't lose his undefeated streak however, was Cain Velasquez, getting the TKO victory over Dutchman Antoni Hardonk, halfway through the fight.
  • The co-main event was the fight of the night, as Cheick Kongo tapped out to an impressive Roy Nelson after 2:54.
  • In the main event, Heath Herring and Gabriel Gonzaga had a boring affair which ended with a 29-28 unanimous decision for Heath Herring.

UFC 111: Silva vs. Belfort

  • Prelim winners: Dustin Hazelett, Thiago Tavares, Todd Duffee & Ben Rothwell.
  • Both Nogueira brothers were on the card today, Lil Nog was the first one, as he opened the televised card, tapping out with just 14 seconds left in the first round, to the undefeated Ryan Bader.
  • The heavyweight, Big Nog, was in the co-main event, as he took on the legendary Mirko "Cro Cop". This fight lasted about a round longer, but also ended with submission, but this time, a Nog's hand did get raised.
  • Dan Hardy and Josh Koscheck both proved a point, showing themselves to be worthy contenders to the Welterweight title, as both men won their fights by KO in the 2nd round.
  • Another succesful title defense in the main event, as Anderon Silva defeated Vitor Belfort, also by KO in the second round.

UFC 112: Penn vs Griffin

  • The next UFC card will be main evented by the Hawaiian lightweight champion BJ Penn, as he takes on Tyson Griffin.
  • The co-main event will see Randy Couture battle Chuck Liddell

Other big news stories

Strikeforce: Meadowlands

Preliminary fights

  • Rex Richards def. Lavar Johnson by TKO (3:52, R1)
  • Spencer Herns def. Eugene Jackson by Unanimous Decision
  • Aisling Daly def. Roxanne Modafferi by Submission (4:45, R1)

  • Billy Evangelista beat Torrance Taylor by TKO (3:09, R1)

Carl Seumanutafa vs Hershel Walker

All the prelim fights ended in either the first round, or went the distance, the first televised fight was no different, as the retiring former NFL Running back took Samoan Carl Seumanutafa for the full 3 rounds, all judges scoring it 30-27 for Seumanutafa.

Carl Seumanutafa def. Hershel Walker via Unanimous Decision

Marloes Coenen vs Gina Carano

It's ladies time, as these two beautiful top contenders to Cyborg Santos' Middleweight title squared off, in a match that no doubt would give the winner a shot at the championship.

If the crowd came to see long, boring fights with nobody going in for the kill, they sure got what they wanted, another fight that went 15 minutes, when Gina Carano won the fight by split decision.

Gina Carano def. Marloes Coenen via Unanimous Decision

Strikeforce Welterweight Championship

Nick Diaz © Vs Jim Wallhead

Another fight that went 3 rounds, of course that doesn't matter, as it was a title match, therefore it had 5 rounds, but it only reached the 4th round, it was a good match, with a lot of clinching up and fists flying around, but in the end, Diaz' ground game failed on him, as he gave up his arm, and just seconds later, tapping out to Wallhead's armbar.

Jim Wallhead def. Nick Diaz by submission in 2:09 of round 4 to win the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship

Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship

Alistair Overeem © Vs Fabricio Werdum

Another title fight, another 4 round fight, another title change.

That's right, Werdum took Overeem for a whole 4 rounds. As the 4th round started, Werdum went for the takedown, Overeem failed to counter this into a Guillotine, and instead started eating punches until the referee called an end to the fight.

Fabricio Werdum def. Alistair Overeem by TKO in 2:03 of round 4 to win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship

Quick results

  • Carl Seumanutafa def. Herschel Walker by UD
  • Gina Carano def. Marloes Coenen by UD
  • Jim Wallhead def. Nick Diaz by Submission to win the Welterweight Championship
  • Fabricio Werdum def. Alistair Overeem by TKO to win the Heavyweight Championship

Strikeforce on CBS results posted later today, including the next 2 events, and the cards for those events will be posted tomorrow.

Strikeforce on CBS

Preliminary fights

  • Karl Amoussou def. Jamie Yager by submission (2:30, R2)
  • AJ Fonseca def. Kevin Casey by Unanimous Decision
  • Sarah Kaufman def. Zoila Frausto by Unanimous Decision
  • Megumi Fujii def. Kerry Vera by submission (2:44, R1)

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs Kevin Randleman

The night started off explosively, for one man anyway, as Randleman couldn't get a single bit of offense in, and Sokoudjou quickly finished the fight after 1:51 of the first round.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou def. Kevin Randleman by TKO in 1:51 of round 1

Cung Le vs Ronaldo Souza

The first round was pretty uneventful, with an early take down by Jacare, and both men pulling guard on each other. The second round started off much better, when Cung Le landed an early head kick that sent Souza flying to the mat, followed by a flurry of powerful punches, which forced the referee to stop the fight.

Cung Le def. Ronaldo Souza by TKO in 0:49 of round 2

Strikeforce Women's Welterweight Championship

Sarah Kaufman vs Megumi Fujii

An advantage couldn't quite be given to either woman, although Kaufman had a longer rest, she went for the full 15 minutes in her fight, where as Fujii only took just over two and a half minutes to tap out Kerry Vera.

Two undefeated streaks were already ended, and another one was about to end.

After a slow first round, which included the referee bringing the fighters up to their feet twice, the second round also went to the ground quickly, but this time, Fujii took advantage, and got control of Kaufman's arm, forcing her to tap out to the armbar.

Megumi Fujii def. Sarah Kaufman by submission in 1:55 of round 2 to win the Womens' Welterweight title

Brett Rogers vs Daniel Puder

In perhaps an anti-climatic main event, Rogers and the undefeated Daniel Puder had a boring 3 rounder fight, which although slow, was dominated by Rogers, as he won the fight 30-27.

Brett Rogers def. Daniel Puder by Unanimous Decision

Quick results

  • Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou def. Kevin Randleman by TKO (1:51, R1)
  • Cung Le def. Ronaldo Souza by TKO (0:49, R2)
  • Megumi Fujii def. Sarah Kaufman by submission (1:55, R2) to win the Womens' Welterweight Title
