Full Throttle Wrestling

...three years ago...

“I’m sick of this place and I’m sick of places like this. There are too many ****ing idiots like him allowed far too much responsibility; allowed to break their ****ing promises and change months of careful planning at the very last moment. I’m ****ing done. I’m out of here.”

Curtis had everyone’s attention from the moment that we had all sat down in the bar. Zoe, Bethany, Harvey and I had all agreed to be there for our good friend on what should have been his big night. It should have been the night that saw him capturing the British All-Star Wrestling Championship from ‘Cyber Punk’ Clinton Washington; his first title in wrestling.

But it wasn’t.

Instead of winning his first gold in his wrestling career, Washington, the apparently out-going Champion and Uppercut Bailey, the head honcho of the BASW changed their minds as both men stood behind the curtain ready to start the main event. Months of meticulous planning were all put to waste so that Bailey could keep the title on his favoured son instead of going with what they had planned.

Curtis had debuted in BASW just a year before and done a decent job of interesting the crowd with his early showings. Despite his lack of name value in the midlands and his young age, he was quickly moved up the card with a string of impressive victories that eventually made him the number one contender to Clinton Washington’s title.

Through a series of website posts, YouTube videos and online ‘pranks’ pulled off by the Cyber Punk himself, a showdown was eventually built upon where the only likely outcome was Curtis Jenkins getting his hands on the BASW Championship belt.

That didn’t happen.

Despite months of putting up blocks to the rampaging challenger and refusing his title shots, Clinton Washington pinned CJ cleanly in the centre of the ring. To say he was pissed was an understatement. Although none of us knew quite how pissed until dropped a bombshell to the stunned silence of his closest friends.

“I’m going to America.”

Curtis Jenkins
It feels great to be home!

3 hours ago via BlackBerry

When I turned on my laptop this morning, I did not expect to be greeted by news of Curtis Jenkins returning home.

Not because CJ would have forewarned me he was coming home. He was useless at keeping in touch while on the other side of the Atlantic. If we wanted to know how he was doing, who he was working for and where he was working, we had to find it out ourselves. I scoured fansites, message boards and Twitter for news on his matches.

It was a surprise because we only said goodbye to him three weeks ago. Curtis tended to come home to the UK once or twice a year. He’d arrive before Christmas and be back in America before the New Year and then he’d probably come back for three weeks in the summer.

Coming back now meant something was wrong.

Something had gone wrong.

I clicked onto his page…

Time for CJ to leave his mark on the UK! This waist needs some gold weighing it down!

…Something had definitely gone wrong. I know Curtis and he wouldn’t give up on his American dream after just three years and not without warning. He’d just locked down a regular spot in Rip Chord’s Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. Not only was he being trained and helped by one of the greatest ever wrestlers but he’s still only 25.

I immediately started to think about the last time I’d seen him. It was the night before he was heading back to the states and all he could talk about was 2010 being his year. Rip had promised him at a place in the Rip Chord Invitational tournament and his team with Riley McManus was going from strength-to-strength.

It didn’t make sense for him to be back.

My phone rang. It was Curtis.

“Hello.”

“Dude… Are you ready to take over the wrestling world?”

«««« »»»»

“I don’t believe him.”

Harvey, Bethany and I had all received the same calls from Curtis this morning. In his first day back from the States he planned to start his own wrestling promotion that would… long story short, conquer the world.

I assume he tried to call Zoe and get the whole band back together but she probably didn’t answer. They’d broken up six months before Curtis left in 2007 and she’d moved on. None of us were that close to her so it was only natural that she drifted off… somewhere.

We had all agreed to meet Curtis to at least hear him out and thankfully, he was running late. We used to the time to discuss our theories on why he was back. I was pretty clear.

“I really don’t believe him. There is no way he woke up yesterday and decided he was fed up of seemingly getting nowhere. And he definitely didn’t decide that he’d be much better off coming back here to start his own promotion. Something else is going on…”

“I don’t know. I think he’s back because he missed home,” responded Beth. “His mum hasn’t been doing that well recently so maybe he just wants to be closer to-“

Beth was cut off by Harvey raising his hand. Curtis had walked into the bar and was heading in our direction.

After some quick pleasantries, Curtis got down to the task in hand; convincing us to join him with his wrestling promotion and I have to say, his argument was pretty convincing. He’d already sourced a couple of potential venues that were used to putting on wrestling shows and even got a couple of sponsors interested in the product.

The more that I listened to his pitch the more I realised that it was only for my benefit. He wasn’t trying to convince Harvey or Beth to join his Full Throttle Wrestling; he’d offer them a paying gig so they were always going to agree.

Harvey had originally been Curtis’ tag team partner. They had both debuted in the wrestling business together but Curtis’ natural talent soon saw them split allowing CJ to work his way towards the main event of promotion. Harvey went on to a new team with another Scottish wrestler Michael Berry and soon became the ‘Suicide Agent’ Paraquat to Berry’s ‘Genocide Agent’ Cylon. Collectively, they are the face-painted Elimination Agents; most famously remembered as two-time 21st Century Wrestling tag team champions.

Beth acted as Harvey and Curtis’ valet when they originally debuted. They all trained together and that made quite a cohesive debuting unit although Bethany’s initial hopes of being the mouthpiece were quickly cut short when it was realised she was horrible on the mic. She still works as a valet for hire but without a long-time client to manage, her working gigs had been few and far between in recent months.

Curtis finished his pitch and the trio all looked at me.

“What?”

“Are you in?” enquired Curtis.

“What do you need me for?”

“Tie everything together and be the unbiased leader. We’ll all help you out but we’ll also want to win every match we fight in. You’ll be in charge of stopping us from taking over.”

I was never going to say no.

“Okay… I’m in as long as you tell us the real reason that you’re back.”

“What?”

“I’m not buying what you’re trying to sell. This isn’t the real reason that you’ve had to come back. You didn’t come back for this. And I refuse to work with you if you aren’t completely honest with us.”

“This is the reason.”

“Curtis… Don’t treat us like idiots.”

“Scott… Leave it out! He’s told us the reason!” Harvey tried to intervene. “Why else would he be back?”

“That’s what I want him to tell us…”

“Drop it!” snapped Beth. “He’s already told us!”

I shook my head. “He hasn’t.”

“Fine,” conceded Curtis. He was looking down at the floor. “I’ll tell you.”

I was smiling but I didn’t feel comfortable smiling. A part of me had hoped I was wrong.

“I couldn’t get my visa extended. I wasn’t working and earning enough. No matter what Rip and I tried, it wasn’t enough. The decision was made and I’ve been sent home.”

A silence fell over the four of us. I really wish I hadn’t bothered.

Over the next few days, we spent our time researching and finding guys to be included in our initial roster. Curtis and Harvey had a handful of guys each that they wanted involved but I was keen to keep costs as low as possible and therefore, the numbers as low as possible. I left Curtis and Harvey to ring their pals and once they had all said yes, I only had to add one or two extras. We ended up with a list that we were pretty happy with:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/BaliDaljit.jpg

BALI DALJIT, 19, Lightweight, Cruiserweight

One of the guys that I picked up because he’s cheap and apparently local. He was unlucky to be cut loose by Ring of Fire after they had trained him up but he’ll do a decent job opening shows for us. Takes a decent bump and his
Old School Face
gimmick should see him get a lot of crowd sympathy.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/BrilliantWhite.jpg
BRILLIANT WHITE, 23, Lightweight, Spot Monkey

His striking white hair and
Gender Bender
gimmick means that Brilliant White is rarely forgotten quickly. He worked with Harvey in 21CW who tells me the internet reports of him being unreliable and sometimes lazy in the ring are nothing to worry about.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/ChuckFrisby.jpg
CHUCK FRISBY, 33, Middleweight, Entertainer

Another of Harvey’s contacts that has been out of regular work since being cut loose by 21CW last year. His
Ultra Camp
character is pretty one dimensional but it’ll do the job for us.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/CurtisJenkins.jpg
CURTIS JENKINS, 25, Lightweight, Technician

Our leader and owner assures me that his
Fan Favourite
gimmick he is working on will go down brilliantly with the London crowd. He’d be helped out with
BETHANY HURST
acting as his groupie. He’s easily the best trained and most talented guy working the shows but he has been gone from the UK since 2007. Rip Chord’s MAW gets decent UK traffic but not enough to make CJ our star; I just don’t know how to tell him.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/GenocideAgent.jpg
CYLON, 28, Middleweight, Brawler

Arguably the better half of the Elimination Agents. When they were picked up by 21CW in 2007, they were a horrible pair in the ring that got by because of their pretty cool
Power and Paint
look. They’ve improved tenfold since then and are now one of the best tandems on the UK scene although none of the big boys want to give them a regular gig.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/DaveyLondon.jpg
DAVEY LONDON, 23, Lightweight, Regular Wrestler

‘The Hustler’ is the only guy that has an arrangement elsewhere. He’s one half of a tag team with Davey Celtic in 21CW and only agreed to bring his street-wise,
Hustler
gimmick to FTW because he trained with Curtis way back when. Solid performer but his availability may be an issue if 21CW keep running weekend shows in Scotland.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/GlenWard.jpg
GLEN WARD, 25, Middleweight, Regular Wrestler

Glen Ward probably runs Curtis close in terms of all-round skills. He is the second of my signings although he’s got a family wedding on the day of his first show so will miss it. His
Straight Edge
, committed-to-the-job character is fantastic. I can only imagine he’ll go on to bigger and better things soon enough.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/JacquesDuPont.jpg
JACQUES DUPONT, 22, Lightweight, Technician

Jacques DuPont and his identical twin brother Pierre make up a
French Armed
Forces tag team called The Foreign Legion. Now permanently based in London, they are decent technicians who just need to get a bit flashier with their in-ring skills and they could do every well. The only way to tell them apart is a small scar on Jacques’ right eye caused by Harvey during a recent tag team bout.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/KeithAdams.jpg
KEITH ADAMS, 35, Middleweight, Regular Wrestler

Keith Adams was a pretty solid all-rounder with a bland gimmick until he abandoned a match once to arrest a criminal that he noticed in the crowd. It was quickly realised that he is a policeman by day and he started to work a
Law Enforcer
gimmick that has done him very well.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/SuicideAgent.jpg
PARAQUAT, 27, Middleweight, Brawler

While not spectacular in the ring, Harvey is one of the guys that we have. He’s used to working against guys smaller than him and that has helped develop him into a decent brawler. His
Power and Paint
look against Cylon will easily make them are early fan favourites.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/PierreDuPont.jpg
PIERRE DUPONT, 22, Lightweight, Technician

The other half of the
Armed Forces
team that is The Foreign Legion and the older half; although quite why Pierre was so keen to point that out to me, I don’t know. He also informed me that he is not planning on trying to replicate Jacques’ scar above his eye, all the while I just wanted to make sure they would make the first Full Throttle show.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/PigeonMask.jpg
PIGEON MASK, 39, Lightweight, Cruiserweight

Kenneth Koleman insists that when he returned to his infamous Pigeon Mask in 2007, he did it with the intentions of playing it as an ironic, post-modern in-joke. Whatever way he tries to spin it, his
Fun Babyface
antics under the mask are ten times more entertaining than ‘The Yorkshire Terrier’ shtick that he had tried instead.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/RipperLeStat.jpg
RIPPER LESTAT, 23, Heavyweight, Psychopath

Ripper LeStat is a youngster full of potential and having already worked out a great niche for himself with his
Vampire
character. As soon as I saw him perform, I knew he’d be my third and final signing. He’s a naturally vicious heel and easily the biggest guy on the roster.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb230/flatvanawful/fullthrottle/small/Thunderbolt.jpg
THUNDERBOLT, 26, Lightweight, Spot Monkey

Having debuted at the same time as Curtis and Harvey, Thunderbolt is someone that they have known for years. His Comic Book Hero gimmick fits in nicely with his equally fantastic and ridiculous ring skills. He still doesn’t know the first thing about wrestling a proper match but his gymnastic background means he’s watchable.

We signed up Allan Round to referee the matches and for commentary we got Des Greeves, a sports commentator for some London stations and Guy McKenna, a guy that had tryouts for Men of Steel Combat and Ring of Fire. I'd be in control of making sure things ran on time and we got Curtis' first ever trainer, Nick Adams to help out with the in-ring side of road agent duties.

Sorted.

With the roster confirmed we sat down as a group of four to plan the first show. Team decisions would be much easier for me to defend if someone didn’t like their booking plans. I planned on just blaming anyone and everyone out of eye or earshot if anything kicked off.

Harvey, Beth and I had the same rough idea for the first show. We wanted to run an eight-man tournament from start to finish all in one evening and get the first Full Throttle Wrestling Champion crowned. I felt that it would allow Full Throttle Wrestling to immediately have an obvious franchise player with a target on his back and Harvey was keen to get momentum behind the title.

Curtis wasn’t so keen.

He wanted to get as many bodies on the first show as possible and that meant stretching the tournament out over two months and two shows. Plus he reminded us all that we had sounded out the roster and got them on board while quoting the date of the inaugural event.

I gave in and backed Curtis’ idea.

I hadn’t forgiven myself for forcing him to admit he was kicked out of America and I’m sure he knew it.
