Welcome to Mixed Martial Arts

December 28, 1990. I sat across a table from some businessmen, including Matt Tripp. He was eagerly talking of a new type of fighting promotion, based on some Japanese nonsense he saw. Meanwhile, I sit impatiently looking at my watch. The last time someone offered me a good money making scheme involving fighting, Buster Douglas upset Mike Tyson. I wasn’t too keen on this idea of Tripp’s until he compared it to the old gladiator sports of Rome. Where two men would go into a steel cage and just fight until one quit, was knocked out or died. “That sounds like human **** fighting,” remarked one gentleman and he quickly left. Others followed suit, but Tripp had my ear and as people continued to leave, I grabbed a napkin and drew out the first Openweight Tournament in what Tripp had called “GAMMA.” As the numbers dwindled, Tripp realized another business choice of his was going to be a flop. After all, the only other person left in the room was me and I was a washed up boxing promoter.

Who had connections to Las Vegas and the NSAC of course…

GAMMA I – The Genesis

Saturday, Week 4, January

Not much in fanfare, but we were in a small Vegas casino which held maybe 2500 people so to have a little over 2000 in attendance for our first event was good enough for us.

Phil Verdigree [236 lbs / Boxing] vs Jack Cobblepot [275 / Grappling]

First match in GAMMA history sees a contrast in the great debate of who would win, a boxer or a grappler? Vegas odds on Cobblepot who is the number 2 ranked fighter in this tournament and has 39 pounds on Verdigree. The fight is scheduled for 15 minutes and it lasts the entire 15 minutes. The first match in GAMMA history isn’t exciting either as Cobblepot used his grappling to control the match and cruises easily to a unanimous decision.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jack Cobblepot [15:00]

”Knockout” Nigel Malley [178 lbs / Boxing] vs. Eugene Clough [285 lbs / Wrestling]

Another contrast in styles as pro boxer Nigel Malley goes against Eugene Clough and the biggest weight advantage in the entire tournament [107 lbs]. Malley makes this fight his as the two trade blows, however the first real upset in GAMMA history happens when the pro boxer gets knocked out five minutes in by Clough. The crowd is shocked, Vegas odds makers are shocked and even Clough himself might be shocked as he advances to the second round of the tournament.

Winner by Knockout – Eugene Clough [4:57]

Veeti Kuqi [275 lbs / Finnish Ass Whippin’] vs. Greg Attevid [185 / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu]

90 lbs and Finnish Ass Whippin’ isn’t enough for Kuqi. Attevid, despite being a BJJ fighter, decides to spend most of the fight standing against the largely inexperienced and untrained sideshow from Finland and despite not obtaining a clear decision via knockout or submission, the judges agree that Attevid is the winner.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Greg Attevid [15:00]

Mantas Andreyev [205 lbs / Sambo] vs. Cliff McAdam [202 / Gaelic Wrestling]

One of the most hyped matches of the night as the legendary Soviet Sambo master makes his debut in the United States. This is also one of the closest matches as McAdam, despite not being as well known, is a good wrestler. However being a good Gaelic Wrestler can’t be compared to being a Sambo master and Andreyev defeats McAdam for the first submission GAMMA history with the Rear Naked Choke at about 8 minutes.

Winner by Submission [Rear Naked Choke] – Mantas Andreyev [8:39]

Mick Curran [201 lbs / Brawling] vs. Vincent Chapin [226 lbs / Wrestling]

A non-tournament match here to fill in time and give fighters a break. This the greatest distinction in styles so far as Curran strictly limits himself to brawling while Chapin limits his skill to wrestling and the two fight to a fifteen minute draw which doesn’t sit too well with the fans.

Draw [15:00]

Eugene Clough [285 lbs / Wrestling / 1-0] vs. Jack Cobblepot [275 lbs / Grappling / 1-0]

Back to tournament action and Cobblepot explodes from the beginning striking Clough and then immediately taking him down. But that was it for both men as they spent the next 13 minutes on the ground with little to no movement. Cobblepot is declared the winner, again, and although he isn’t the most exciting fighter, he does what he can to win.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jack Cobblepot [15:00]

Mantas Andreyev [205 lbs / Sambo / 1-0] vs. Greg Attevid [185 / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / 1-0]

Andreyev was obviously watching the previous fight as he does the same thing. Attevid cannot outmaneuver Andreyev on the ground and Andreyev easily wins it on the ground according to the judges.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Mantas Andreyev [15:00]

Henrik Berg [305 lbs / Norwegian Whale Wrestling] vs. Manol Sirakov [260 lbs / Slugging]

This is exactly what it looks like, a distraction. Two European side shows to give the finalists some time to rest. This match is surprisingly entertaining though in a game of cat and mouse as the much larger Berg attempted to use his weight and wrestling to beat Sirakov, but for most of the fight Sirakov jabbed him away. However, Sirakov wasn’t too aware of the cage and backed right into it allowing Berg to take him down and lock in an armbar for the submission victory.

Winner by Submission [Armbar] – Henrik Berg [10:00]

GAMMA I Tournament Finals – 30:00 Time Limit

Mantas Andreyev [205 lbs / Sambo / 2-0] vs. Jack Cobblepot [275 lbs / Grappling / 2-0]

Hopefully the ten minutes gave both men enough time to recuperate. Surprisingly, this is the match Vegas Oddsmakers predicted to be the finals with Andreyev a slim favorite over Cobblepot. The match became about who could take who down first and for 30 minutes the takedown attempts and the defense shown was amazing. It went down to the judges, as neither man was able to get a clear advantage and the judges clearly agreed. Judge #1 gave the fight to Cobblepot and judge #2 gave it to Andreyev. The third judge, being the deciding judge, gave the fight to Cobblepot to an erupt of applause and a USA chant. Cobblepot was the GAMMA 1 champion and proved that MMA belonged in America.

Winner by Split Decision and GAMMA I Tournament Champion – Jack Cobblepot [30:00]

The first GAMMA event wasn’t as well received as we had hoped but we expected as much. Considering our limited amount of talent, we were pleased with what we had accomplished. And Jack Cobblepot’s upset victory over Mantas Andreyev made him the first major American MMA star. Not only that, it made him the number one fighter in the world in February’s MMA rankings, which we considered a personal victory. Of course, this meant Cobblepot would have to defend at GAMMA 2, which we had to wait quite a while to begin to promote. Unfortunately, most of our roster had decided to take a month or two off so we couldn’t immediately capitalize on our popularity and due to the rest of available Mixed Martial Artists being in ISL, we could only wait for our roster to be ready.

GAMMA 2: Locked Up

We implemented some rule changes before the fight. Well, we implemented a rule. No longer would a fighter be allowed to just smother. If the referee felt the fighters weren’t doing anything, he could stand them both up.

Mantas Andreyev [205 lbs / Sambo / 2-1] vs. Wild Bill Cumming [205 lbs / Wrestling / 0-0]

Clearly Andreyev is focused on other things as Cumming simply out wrestles the Russian for 15 minutes. Within five minutes, when Andreyev attempted a take down, he was almost knocked out by Cumming and from there on it was the wrestler’s fight guaranteeing we would see at least one new face in the final. Cumming gets the victory via judges’ decision.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Wild Bill Cumming [15:00]

Henrik Berg [305 lbs / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 1-0] vs. “The Pitbull” Rick Stanley [235 lbs / Kickboxing / 0-0]

We see the first example of our rule here as Berg attempts to simply smother the kickboxing Stanley. However the ref stands both men up, about 4 minutes in and again at 7 minutes in and separates them from the cage at 12 minutes. Despite the rule, Berg still manages to smother his way to victory bringing about a lackluster debut from Rick Stanley.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Henrik Berg [15:00]

Eugene Clough [285 lbs / Wrestling / 1-1] vs. Greg Atteveld [185 lbs / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / 1-1]

Atteveld likes the weight disadvantages it seems as now he’s at a 100 pound disadvantage against Clough. Unlike last time however, Atteveld would not have his way with a bigger man. In fact, Clough’s weight and power was the reason why Atteveld wouldn’t. Clough surprisingly kept the fight standing, again, and again punched his way to victory. This time however, he pummeled Atteveld until the ref jumped in to stop the fight awarding Clough a Technical Knockout. That certainly had the crowd on their feet and Clough may be able to avenge his lost against Cobblepot in the last tournament.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Eugene Clough [5:08]

Jack Cobblepot [275 lbs / Grappling / 3-0] vs. Jasper Osmond [195 lbs / Wrestling / 0-0]

Defending champion Cobblepot had a hot crowd behind him, experience and 80 pounds. Cobblepot makes Osmond a ragdoll, but cannot finish Osmond and outwrestles him for the judges’ decision.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jack Cobblepot [15:00]

Phil Verdigree [236 lbs / Boxing / 0-1] vs. Vincent Chapin [226 lbs / Wrestling / 0-0-1]

Verdigree is looking to show that January was a fluke loss while Chapin looks to show he deserved a spot in both tournaments and the mix of styles brings us another amazing match [much like Clough / Atteveld] as Verdigree and Chapin trade shots and styles. Verdigree looks more like a wrestler and Chapin more like a boxer but eventually the bizarro world fixes itself as Chapin goes on the offensive in the ground and is able to lock in an arm triangle for the victory.

Winner by Submission [Arm Triangle] – Vincent Chapin [11:15]

Henrik Berg [305 lbs / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 2-0] vs. Wild Bill Cumming [205 lbs / Wrestling / 1-0]

Despite being an untrained circus act from Norway, Henrik had one thing going for him: no matter who he fought, he’d have a weight advantage. He has one over Wild Bill here [100 lbs] and if he continues to fight the way he fights, he may just smother his way in. However, Berg wasn’t going to do that. Instead, he was actually going to fight. Despite Cumming being the far better wrestler, Berg managed to defend every takedown including the last one Cumming attempted with a right cross that gave Berg enough time to mount and pound, taking notes from Eugene Clough it seems. Cumming wasn’t able to recover and the referee once again jumped in to stop the fight.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Henrik Berg [5:26]

Jack Cobblepot [275 lbs / Grappling / 4-0] vs. Eugene Clough [285 lbs / Wrestling / 2-1]

Their second meeting this year and Clough looked much better as he kept the fight as a stand up fight. For a man who’s disciplined in Wrestling, Clough has some of the best stand up skills in GAMMA and it shows against Cobblepot. Clough also looked less exhausted than Cobblepot and was able to defend the takedown very well for a judges’ victory and a GAMMA upset.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Eugene Clough [15:00]

“Knock Out” Nigel Malley [178 lbs / Pro Boxing / 0-1] vs. Veeti Kuqi [275 lbs / Finnish Ass Whippin’ / 0-1]

Despite Clough’s success tonight, Malley has been on the “Fluke” Hype Train since he lost. If he beats Kuqi, some people’s minds might be changed. Kuqi however had other plans, he wanted to be seen in the same light as Henrik Berg, that even though he’s really a European side show, he can kick ass. So, the fight begins and we got another contender for fight of the year as the two fought for 8 minutes back and forth until Kuqi lands flush on Malley’s jaw and then mounts and pounds until the ref jumps in for the third time tonight signaling another TKO and maybe the end of Nigel Malley’s GAMMA career.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Veeti Kuqi [8:49]

GAMMA II Tournament Finals – 30:00 Time Limit

Eugene Clough [285 lbs / Wrestling / 3-1] vs. Henrik Berg [305 lbs / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 3-0]

So definitely not the finals anyone could’ve seen. In fact, Vegas odds had a repeat of GAMMA 1. But that’s the beauty of the sport, sometimes all it takes is one punch or one extra minute to change everyone’s minds. Of course, the preferred winner for GAMMA is Clough so they can promote a Superfight in Clough/Cobblepot III, but preference means nothing with skill and Clough had the skills to overcome Berg tonight as he outwrestled Berg for 30 minutes giving him a unanimous decision and the GAMMA II Championship.

GAMMA 3: Survival of the Fittest

In Las Vegas, we have an unregulated MMA still yet the NYSAC just legitimized and regulated MMA. Part of that regulation however was weight classes, licenses and no more tournaments. While we still run in Nevada however, this won’t be a problem.

Milton Harvey [0-0 / Wrestling / 229 lbs] vs. Jasper Osmond [0-1 / Wrestling / 195 lbs]

I’m sure this is the first time in GAMMA history two fighters of the same discipline ever met in the cage. Doesn’t really make an exciting match though as the two wrestle to a 15 minute draw in what one has to consider a turn of events from the last show’s excitement.

Draw – Time Limit [15:00]

Jack Cobblepot [4-1 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Wild Bill Cumming [1-1 / Wrestling / 205 lbs]

First tournament match of the night is a standard Cobblepot affair. It seems Cumming’s win over Andreyev was nothing but a fluke as Cobblepot easily outwrestles Cumming for fifteen minutes and the judges give him the win.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jack Cobblepot [15:00]

Henrik “Ice” Berg [3-1 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs] vs. Veeti Kuqi [1-1 / Finnish Ass Whippin’ / 275 lbs]

Both men learned how to punch last April so to see this match up should be an interesting one. Berg doesn’t enjoy the extreme weight advantage [although 30 lbs is still a weight advantage] and much like in the GAMMA II finals, this seems to effect him. It also seems if someone is a runner up, they lose in the first round the following month as Berg follows Andreyev’s example from the month before and loses to Veeti Kuqi by decision.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Veeti Kuqi [15:00]

Vincent Chapin [1-0-1 / Wrestling / 226 lbs] vs. Mantas Andreyev [2-2 / Sambo / 205 lbs]

Andreyev certainly took two consecutive losses personally as he’s firing on all cylinders against Chapin. Even when Chapin seems to have the upper hand, Andreyev shows he’s still one of the best and defeats Chapin with a guillotine handedly.

Winner by Submission – Mantas Andreyev [4:47]

Eugene Clough [4-1 / Wrestling / 285 lbs] vs. Mick Curran [0-0-1 / Brawling / 201 lbs]

Unlike Chapin, Curran (who drew with Chapin in January) brings the fight to Clough and outfights the big man for fifteen minutes. GAMMA officials at ringside look shocked as Curran, who was supposed to be fodder for Clough, defeats Curran by outbrawling him.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Mick Curran [15:00]

Rick Stanley [0-1 / Kickboxing / 235 lbs] vs. Manol Sirakov [0-1 / Slugging / 260 lbs]

Stanley looks for redemption after being embarrassed in April here and does so, although in an unorthodox way. He doesn’t do it with his feet, but with his fist, after he mounts Sirakov with 2 minutes to go and pummels Sirakov until the referee breaks it off.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Rick Stanley [13:04]

Veeti Kuqi [2-1 / Finnish Ass Whippin’ / 275 lbs] vs. Jack Cobblepot [5-1 / Grappling / 275 lbs]

Cobblepot looks to return to the finals in this one as Kuqi looks for his first finals appearance and the dominant American, with a drunk American crowd behind him, manages to do it only after the referee stands both of them. Kuqi looked to win by smothering, but at GAMMA 2, the rules changed so that a smother victory couldn’t happen. After being stood up, Cobblepot dominated and made Kuqi tap out via an armbar.

Winner by Submission [Armbar] – Jack Cobblepot.

Mick Curran [1-0-1 / Brawling / 201 lbs] vs. Mantas Andreyev [3-2 / Sambo / 205 lbs]

Curran might have the toughest road to the championship in history, first he defeated the GAMMA II champion, now he was up against Mantas Andreyev a world class Sambo expert and then, IF he won, he’d go against GAMMA I champion Jack Cobblepot. Andreyev, however, had different plans and took Curran to town in the world’s most excruciating Sambo lesson as Andreyev simply picked apart Curran until he tapped out at 12 minutes in an armbar.

Winner by Submission [Armbar] – Mantas Andreyev [12:01]

“Knock Out” Nigel Malley [0-2 / Boxing / 178 lbs] vs. Phil Verdigree [0-2 / Boxing / 236 lbs]

A boxing match and the quickest fight in GAMMA history. Verdigree and Malley both wanted a contract and Verdigree proved that Malley truly needs to leave GAMMA A.S.A.P. after pummeling him for two minutes forcing the referee to end the fight.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Phil Verdigree [2:00]

GAMMA III Tournament Finals – 30:00 Time Limit

Jack Cobblepot [6-1 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs, Mantas Andreyev [4-2 / Sambo / 205 lbs]

One of the bigger rivalries in GAMMA, everyone knows that Andreyev SHOULD have won GAMMA I and yet he didn’t. In fact, a lot of GAMMA’s press was about Andreyev, not Cobblepot. It was on how Andreyev was making his debut. And Andreyev knew this, yet somehow Cobblepot won it all. He became the biggest American star overnight and made GAMMA become noticed. Before tonight’s event Andreyev guaranteed things would be different if he should make the tournament finals and it was. It wasn’t a back and forth event, like the first match. In fact, it was very one sided with Cobblepot overpowering Andreyev. It looked like Cobblepot would easily take this match, until he gave up his back. When this happened, Andreyev took advantage of the one mistake Cobblepot made in the tournament and made him pay with a rear naked choke forcing Cobblepot to tap and making the two rivals even in their series of matches.

Winner by Submission [Rear Naked Choke] and GAMMA III Champion – Mantas Andreyev [14:50]

So… So-so event. Still in the black as far as money is concerned and Andreyev winning, while unexpected isn’t a surprise. Oh and thank goodness Nigel Malley lost his last match because he just signed on with ISL. Have fun in Japan I suppose. Although we signed a few new faces to replace him, Ernie Bruns and Solomon Austin and from ISL: Kojuro Ijichi, Eijiro Yanagita and Shiko Taka. The three fighters from ISL are all smaller fighters than what is used to being seen in GAMMA but it should make an interesting twist come tournament time.

Oh and in other news, ISL has a new TV show so of course that means GAMMA needs to search for one too, right? Well National Pride TV was willing to offer us one in their syndicated markets. So we took it, to go along with our tournaments we will now have television featuring our less popular fighters.

GAMMA 4: Asian Invasion

Not the most unique name, but whatever.

Jack Cobblepot [6-2 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Shiko Taka [3-1 / Traditional Jiu-Jitsu / 155 lbs]

A very ordinary Cobblepot match in which he controls by grappling and wrestling. The smaller Taka had no real chance in this match as Cobblepot walks away with a judges’ decision. This also breaks the two show streak of a runner up losing in the first round.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jack Cobblepot [15:00]

Rick Stanley [1-1 / Kick Boxing / 235 lbs] vs. Eijiro Yanagita [4-1 / Wrestling / 152 lbs]

A new record for shortest match as Rick Stanley pummels Yanagita in one minute leading to a referee technical knockout…

Winner by Technical Knockout – Rick Stanley [1:00]

Eugene Clough [4-2 / Wrestling / 285 lbs] vs. Kojuro Ijichi [4-1-1 / Wresting / 169 lbs]

It comes down to Kojuro Ijichi to actually make a difference in the failed Asian invasion. However against the GAMMA II champion won’t be the easiest task; especially with a 116 pound weight disadvantage. However, for fifteen minutes, Ijichi somehow manages to retain his wrestling skills and prove to be the better fighter, defeating Clough in a somewhat shocking upset.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Kojuro Ijichi [15:00]

Mantas Andreyev [5-2 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Veeti Kuqi [2-2 / Finnish Ass Whippin’ / 275 lbs]

Andreyev is all business tonight and shows Kuqi that there would be no upset tonight by taking Kuqi to town. Andreyev is quickly re-establishing himself as a major star in GAMMA and a repeat GAMMA tournament victory would probably put him above Jack Cobblepot as one of the best. He starts his road to repeat with a kumura here.

Winner by Submission [Kimura] – Mantas Andreyev [4:38]

Mick Curran [1-1-1 / Brawling / 201 lbs] vs. Vincent Chapin [1-1-1 / Wrestling / 226 lbs]

In a rematch from GAMMA I, this looked to be a match which may see either man propel or fall in GAMMA. However, neither would happen as another case to allow judges in non-tournament matches happens instead with both men coming once again to a time limit draw despite the fact that Curran clearly won the fight on his boxing alone.

Time Limit Draw [15:00]

Rick Stanley [2-1 / Kick Boxing / 235 lbs] vs. Jack Cobblepot [7-2 / Grappling / 275 lbs]

Rick Stanley is clearly looking for an upset while Cobblepot is looking to maintain his reign on top of GAMMA and Stanley would get his kicks in. He was clearly the fresher fighter and he took advantage of this and nearly knocked Cobblepot out in the first three minutes. Instead, he did score a Technical Knockout after Cobblepot could no longer defend himself, sending Cobblepot home with another semi-final loss.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Rick Stanley [3:43]

Mantas Andreyev [6-2 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Kojuro Ijichi [5-1-1 / Wresting / 169 lbs]

In another match where one fighter was clearly more exhausted than another, Mantas Andreyev continued his road to repeat by dominating Ijichi and locking in a nice armbar ending the foreigner’s bid for tournament gold.

Winner by Submission [Armbar] – Mantas Andreyev [6:09]

Bill Cumming [1-2 / Wrestling / 205 lbs] vs. Henrik “Ice” Berg [3-2 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs]

Another rematch here and the same result as last time. The Iceberg simply plowed over Cumming and demolished him in 7 minutes. Despite giving him more time, the ref realized Cumming could not intelligently defend himself and stopped the fight awarding Berg the victory.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Bill Cumming

GAMMA IV Tournament Finals – 30:00 Time Limit

Rick Stanley [3-1 / Kick Boxing / 235 lbs] vs. Mantas Andreyev [7-2 / Sambo / 205 lbs]

Easily one of the best main events, based on stamina alone. This is the first finals not to have one of the fighters involved in a full fifteen minute fight. Andreyev looked to repeat and become the first repeat champion in the tournament’s history while Stanley looked to simply win his first and make up for the lackluster debut a few months ago. And that he did. Andreyev was unable to repeat as Rick Stanley was on fire. This was the shortest tournament final in GAMMA history and Stanley simply did it like he won all his fights, he pummeled until the referee got involved.

Winner by Technical Knockout and GAMMA IV Champion – Rick Stanley [1:25].

Our highest attendance and a steady increase in PPV numbers made GAMMA look good. And Kojuro Ijichi’s first round victory over a much larger opponent showed that with the right discipline and training, smaller fighters can succeed. The biggest buzz in GAMMA wasn’t any of this however, it was the announcement of the GAMMA Turkey Bowl. Sure, it’s the dumbest name we could have ever come up with, but the idea of GAMMA Turkey Bowl was a good way to give young fighters some experience AND give us some good tv on Thanksgiving night. Hopefully this would help make up for this terrible economic slump…

GAMMA Turkey Bowl I

Preliminaries – Petey Barnum def. Cliff McAdam [uD], Noah Musch def. Greg Atteveld [TKO], Gary Sampson def. Claude Lerond [TKO], Solomon Austin def. Graham Goodbody [uD] and Phil Verdigree def. Ernie Bruns [TKO]. So if you’re not too full of turkey and stuffing, enjoy the TURKEY BOWL!! Live from Oakland, CA.

Noah Musch [1-0 / Full Contact Karate / 232 lbs] vs. Petey Barnum [1-0 / Boxing / 202 lbs]

This is an interesting matchup as we have a karate striker versus a classic boxer. And what we get is a lot of exchanges of strikes. For fifteen minutes this goes on, neither man attempting a takedown and the judges split the decision giving the German, Musch, a chance to win the first ever Turkey Bowl.

Winner by Split Decision – Noah Musch [15:00]

Solomon Austin [1-0 / Brawling / 315 lbs] vs. Gary Sampson [1-0 / Ground and Pound / 251 lbs]

The big boy from Norman, OK signified everything about Thanksgiving. He even was eating a turkey drumstick on the way to the ring. Too bad that didn’t impress Sampson who took Austin to town and almost made the 315 pounder lose his Thanksgiving dinner.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Gary Sampson [15:00]

Jasper Osmond [0-1-1 / Wrestling / 195 lbs] vs. Manol Sirakov [0-2 / Slugging / 260 lbs]

In an exciting back and forth fight, Sirakov’s weight advantage came into play as he became the unmovable rock. That was, until Osmond got clocked against the cage and slumped to the ground. Then Sirakov went down and pounded on Osmond until the referee broke it up. Sirakov was guaranteed another contract to prove himself while Osmond would be leaving once his contract expired.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Manol Sirakov [13:19]

GAMMA TURKEY BOWL I FINALS!

Gary Sampson [2-0 / Ground and Pound / 251 lbs] vs. Noah Musch [2-0 / Full Contact Karate / 232 lbs]

In the match of the night, Gary Sampson simply dominates Musch. There was no room for Musch to breathe and Sampson not only earns himself a Turkey Bowl championship but he has managed to earn himself a shot in a future GAMMA Tournament. He simply dominated Musch and managed to make Musch submit via Armbar.

Winner by Submission [Armbar] – Gary Sampson [10:22]

A success in our books. In competition with pro wrestling, which was on pay-per-view, that night we managed to bring in 177,000 viewers Plus, it had one of the best main events seen on GAMMA programming as Sampson and Musch showed they both belong in GAMMA. Of course, this run of success didn’t come for free. Two fighters were injured: Manol Sirakov and Gary Sampson which put a hold on Sampson’s tournament debut which would have to be moved later than GAMMA 5.

In December, Blurcat Magazine released their first annual Mixed Martial Arts awards. GAMMA swept the board, which could be due to ISL’s two shows in comparison to our five or the fact we simply had better fighters in 1991.

GAMMA 5: Entering the Warzone

Mantas Andreyev [7-3 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Shiko Taka [3-2 / Traditional Jiu-Jitsu / 155 lbs]

Andreyev is willing to prove his loss to Stanley at GAMMA 4 was a fluke and by doing so, he just broke the record for shortest GAMMA match ever by pummeling Taka into a TKO at the 42nd mark.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Mantas Andreyev [00:42]

Jack Cobblepot [7-3 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Eijiro Yanagita [4-2 / Wrestling / 152 lbs]

Cobblepot isn’t going to be outdone however and decided to make quicker work of Yanagita as he beats him in 30 seconds with a TKO.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Jack Cobblepot [00:30]

Kojuro Ijichi [5-2-1 / Wrestling / 169 lbs] vs. Henrik “Ice” Berg [4-2 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs]

Ijichi looks to strike lightning twice here. He actually called Burg out after GAMMA 4 and well, who can resist a mix-match like this? Ijichi, the well trained wrestler, against Berg, the 305 pound behemoth. And Ijichi comes through. Berg attempted to smother his way to victory, but ended up on the defense the entire time as Ijichi tried submission after submission and was able to get a judges’ victory.

Winner by Split Decision – Kojuro Ijichi [15:00]

Rick Stanley [4-1 / Kick Boxing / 235 lbs] vs. Eugene Clough [4-3 / Wrestling / 285 lbs]

The defending champ would be fighting in his last tournament for quite a while here tonight as he refused to sign a new contract with GAMMA. Stanley may be going to Japan or returning to kick boxing, but not without leaving GAMMA with a bang. Stanley simply dominates the fight too. Clough, while close, was clearly never in any real control and Stanley simply made Clough tired and unable to compete. Unforutnately, for Stanley, it went to the judges table and much to the chagrin of the crowd, Stanley, his corner and pretty much anyone watching, Clough won by unanimous decision. The crowd and Stanley were irate with the result.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Eugene Clough [15:00]

Veeti Kuqi [2-3 / Finnish Ass Whippin’ / 275 lbs] vs. Wild Bill Cumming [1-3 / Wrestling / 205 lbs]

This match really showed GAMMA a lot about the difference between tournament prep and one on one prep. Cumming showed a fire that hadn’t been seen since his debut and out wrestled and outfought Kuqi on every level for the win here via submission. Too bad for Kuqi and GAMMA, this was supposed to be a easy win.

Winner by Submission [Guillotine] – Wild Bill Cumming

Jack Cobblepot [8-3 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Mantas Andreyev [8-3 / Sambo / 205 lbs]

A matchup of elite proportions, and what some considered to be the true championship match, for the first time in their histories Cobblepot and Andreyev met in a non-finals matchup. And the two men simply tear it up. Cobblepot looks like he’s in control at around the five minute mark when Andreyev shows off his submission skills hitting a triangle with an armbar from the guard for the victory.

Winner by Submission [Triangle with Armbar] – Mantas Andreyev

Kojuro Ijichi [6-2-1 / Wrestling / 169 lbs] vs. Eugene Clough [5-3 / Wrestling / 285 lbs]

Meanwhile, Ijichi looks to continue his giant killing ways against Eugene Clough here and he once again brings the match to a full fifteen minutes. He played the aggressive victim here, letting Clough get takedowns only to attempt submissions. However, this time, the bigger man was a better fighter than Berg. Judge one gave it to Clough, judge two gave it to Ijichi and judge three gave it to Clough, once again to boos. The crowd is simply hating Clough tonight.

Winner by Split Decision – Eugene Clough [15:00]

Vincent Chapin [1-1-2 / Wrestling / 226 lbs] vs. Milton Harvey [0-0-1 / Wrestling / 229 lbs]

Chapin simply isn’t a finisher and this is evident in his three non-victories. He couldn’t finish. And with 14 minutes left, it looked like he may go to another draw. When suddenly he locked in a rear naked chokehold correctly, with legs hooked, and managed to flatten Harvey for a sweet victory.

Winner by Submission [Rear Naked Choke] – Vincent Chapin [14:31]

GAMMA V Tournament Finals – 30:00 Time Limit

Eugene Clough [6-3 / Wrestling / 285 lbs] vs. Mantas Andreyev [9-3 / Sambo / 205 lbs]

Only one thing was guaranteed of this final: we would have a two time GAMMA Tournament champion. And while, once again, Clough shocked the Vegas oddsmakers by making it this far, Andreyev was something of a staple with this being his fourth final. However, a 1-2 finals record didn’t seem to please the Russian and with the crowd behind him, it seemed like a good time to become the first ever two-time tournament winner. Andreyev took control of the match from the get go and never looked back. Once Clough was down, Andreyev locked in an Arm Triangle to secure the victory and become the first ever two-time tournament winner.

Winner by Submission [Arm Triangle] and GAMMA V Champion – Mantas Andreyev [9:04]

So a decrease in numbers for us, but still a good event overall. It’s unfortunate that Stanley didn’t want to resign with us. GAMMA Late Night Fights I

In preliminary action, Stan Blackheath def. Nash Harbane [Early TKO] and Frank Analysis def. Jasper Osmond [TKO].

Barry Strachan [0-0 / Bar Room Brawling / 240 lbs] vs. Mick Curran [1-1-2 / Brawling / 201 lbs]

Yes, his discipline is bar room brawling. And no, bar room brawling is nothing like mixed martial arts and Strachan learns that quickly as Curran takes apart the bigger foe and lands a TKO victory.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Mick Curran [11:06]

”Double B” Bence Bodor [0-0 / Pro Boxing / 232 lbs] vs. “Papa Bear” Solomon Austin [1-1 / Brawling / 315 lbs]

One would assume Austin knows nothing of MMA. Every time he comes down to the cage, he’s stuffing his face. But maybe it’s that weight advantage because Austin racks up another win against the debuting Bodor as he simply crushes him with powerful blows until the referee stops the fight.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Solomon Austin [7:02]

Petey Barnum [1-1 / Boxing / 202 lbs] vs. Santiago Tosso [0-0 / Kick Boxing / 185 lbs]

The classic boxer / kick boxer match here and it really isn’t all its’ hyped up to be. Barnum however is the better striker and wins via TKO.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Petey Barnum [5:47]

Noah Musch [2-1 / Full Contact Karate / 232 lbs] vs. Phil Verdigree [2-2 / Boxing / 236 lbs]

Verdigree is of course looking to get winning ways, while Musch looks to ride more momentum and create a winning streak. Unfortunately, only one of them could be victorious and Verdigree simply dominates Musch and wins, like the other three matches, via TKO.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Phil Verdigree [10:22]

KO of the Night – Phil Verdigree [vs. Noah Musch]

All six matches on the card end via TKO? Maybe the refs are getting too involved? Anyways, can’t complain: despite a 3000 viewer drop, we still managed to pull in decent ratings and we’re still in the black financially. And with our first non-tournament card officially in the books, and a success [for a tv show] maybe in the near future we can move permanently away from tournaments when [if?] Nevada becomes regulated by the NSAC.

GAMMA 6: Proving Grounds

Did I mention that Jack Cobblepot and Petey Barnum almost fought at weigh ins? Drama!

Gary Sampson [3-0 / Ground and Pound / 251 lbs] vs. Kojuro Ijichi [6-3-1 / Wrestling / 169 lbs]

Sampson earned his shot back at Turkey Bowl I while Kojuro has been just consistent enough to get out of the first round in his previous two tournaments. However, this event IS named Proving Grounds and Sampson is looking to take hold of the mantle set aside for him so he makes quick work of Ijichi in the first fight of GAMMA 6.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Gary Sampson [1:45]

Jack Cobblepot [8-4 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Petey Barnum [2-1 / Boxing / 202 lbs]

Way to add excitement Cobblepot. The crowd is roaring for this fight and Cobblepot’s big mouth could get him in trouble if he gets embarrassed by the less experienced Barnum. However, Cobblepot isn’t looking for that to happen and he controls Barnum from start to finish, racking up a technical knock out.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Jack Cobblepot [10:26]

Henrik “Ice” Berg [4-3 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs] vs. Eugene Clough [6-4 / Wrestling / 285 lbs]

Rematch from GAMMA II finals and when it comes to GAMMA rivalries, this really doesn’t rank with Cobblepot / Andreyev though… But nonetheless it was a rivalry. Last time these two met, Clough became the GAMMA II champion. This time around, Berg came out on top in Smotherfest II.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Henrik Berg [15:00]

Mantas Andreyev [10-3 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Vincent Chapin [2-1-2 / Wrestling / 226 lbs]

Andreyev is still on fire from GAMMA 5 and makes easy work of Chapin who really can’t find his spot here in GAMMA.

Winner by Submission [Armbar] – Mantas Andreyev [9:10]

Greg Atteveld [1-3 / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / 185 lbs] vs. Shiko Taka [3-3 / Traditional Jiu Jitsu / 155 lbs]

Jiu Jitsu Showdown! Really, not sure how to take either one of these fighters. They’ve both been underwhelming, they both have been fillers and this was no different. Atteveld gets the win via submission though.

Winner by Submission [Arm Triangle] – Greg Atteveld [4:18]

Jack Cobblepot [9-4 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Gary Sampson [4-0 / Ground and Pound / 251 lbs]

Jack Cobblepot certainly looks to go into the finals. Unfortunately, the name of the event is Proving Grounds and despite his early success in GAMMA, tonight will not be a repeat of it as Gary Sampson introduces the world to his style of MMA, Ground and Pound. He wrestles Cobblepot to the ground and pummels him for the victory.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Gary Sampson [10:11]

Mantas Andreyev [11-3 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Henrik “Ice” Berg [5-3 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs]

Even with all the luck in the world, Berg was not getting the upset tonight. He certainly tried though and certainly looked like he was going to win. And he probably would have, if he wasn’t fighting the Soviet Sambo Master because even with Berg being in side control, he couldn’t stop Andreyev from getting a Triangle with Armbar for the win.

Winner by Submission [Triangle with Armbar] – Mantas Andreyev

Eijiro Yanagita [4-3 / Wrestling / 152 lbs] vs. Mick Curran [2-1-2 / Brawling / 201 lbs]

Another filler match and a bit of a proving ground for Curran here. Curran delivers too as he shows his brawling skills and knocks out Eijiro Yanagita with a huge right handed uppercut.

Winner by Knockout – Mick Curran [3:00]

GAMMA VI Tournament Finals – 30:00 Time Limit

Mantas Andreyev [12-3 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Gary Sampson [5-0 / Ground and Pound / 251 lbs]

So once again Andreyev is in the finals looking to repeat, against Gary Sampson. However, this is called Proving Grounds. Is it grounds for Andreyev to prove he is the best GAMMA has to offer or is it Proving Grounds for Sampson to prove he’s here in GAMMA as a true threat for now and future GAMMA tournaments?

Andreyev looks to be in control for the first twelve minutes, after taking Sampson down and keeping him down. The stalemate, however, doesn’t please the referee who stands both men up. This is what Sampson was counting on and this quickly becomes a stand up fight, something Sampson was hoping for. He uses his striking to take down Andreyev and stun him which sends Andreyev to the ground. Sampson quickly pounces and the Innovator of Ground and Pound pounds his way to victory.

Winner by Technical Knockout and GAMMA VI Champion – Gary Sampson [13:51]

GAMMA presents Late Night Fights 2

Boston, Massachusetts… Wicked fighting, ya kno?

Manol Sirakov [1-2 / Slugger / 260 lbs] vs. Milton Harvey [0-1-1 / Wrestling / 229 lbs]

Milton Harvey’s only in this match because he’s from Cambridge, MA. Not that the hometown advantage meant anything. The match goes back and forth but ultimately neither man can finish and this ends in a time limit draw.

Time Limit Draw [15:00]

Noah Musch [2-2 / Full Contact Karate / 232 lbs] vs. Veeti Kuqi [2-4 / Finnish Ass Whippin’ / 275 lbs]

In what is supposed to be Musch’s easy victory to bring him to more winning ways turned out to be more of a Kuqi upset. How come when I want someone to win [like Kuqi] he loses but when I want him to lose, he somehow pulls off the win? Irregardless, Kuqi proved to be the better competitor here as he pummels Musch.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Veeti Kuqi [11:27]

Frank Analysis [1-0 / 233 lbs] vs. “Stormin’” Norman Pike [0-0 / Army Combatives / 210 lbs]

One of the most intriguing matches as Pike was being largely hyped and with good reason too as Pike dominates Analysis in this one including a rear naked choke for the win.

Winner by Submission [Rear Naked Choke] – “Stormin” Norman Pike [4:37]

Stan Blackheath [1-0 / Brawling / 228 lbs] vs. Solomon Austin [2-1 / Brawling / 315 lbs]

And for the main event we have Blackheath taking on Austin. This is one of those matches that could promote Austin to the tournament, but the big man can’t finish off Blackheath and as a result we get a tie.

GAMMA 7: Red Alert

A few rule changes of note for this event. For non-tournament/title fights, there will be three rounds in the format of 1 ten minute round and 2 five minute rounds, for tournament fights there will be 1 ten minute round and 1 five minute round and for tournament finals and title fights it is 2 15 minute rounds. The rounds give some time to break off the Smotherfests. Also, judges will judge non-tournament fights in the same format as tournament fights in grading the entire fight, not a single round.

“Stormin” Norman Pike [1-0 / Army Combatives / 210 lbs] vs. Shiko Taka [3-4 / Traditional Jiu-Jitsu / 155 lbs]

In the first 3 round fight in GAMMA history, it goes the distance as Pike and Taka trade blows. However, Pike clearly dominates Taka and cruises his way to a victory.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – “Stormin” Norman Pike [5:00, 3rd Round]

Oleg Dorosklov [3-0 / Judo / 185 lbs] vs. Henrik “Ice” Berg [5-4 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs]

Debuting from ISL, the former ISL champion Dorosklov looks out of place in GAMMA as he comes into the ring in full Judo gi. It’s certainly a sight to see in comparison to most fighters who wear boxing shorts. However the Judo gi doesn’t really help Dorosklov who cannot seem to overcome the weight disadvantage and Berg wins via Unanimous Decision.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Henrik “Ice” Berg [5:00, 2nd Round]

Mantas Andreyev [12-4 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Mick Curran [3-1-2 / Brawling / 201 lbs]

Curran shoots out like a bat out of hell, bringing it to Andreyev and even taking down Andreyev. Unfortunately, like many opponents in the back, Curran’s mistake was taking down Andreyev who quickly capitalizes and locks in the Triangle with Armbar for the win.

Winner by Submission [Triangle with Armbar] – Mantas Andreyev [2:59, 1st Round]

Jack Cobblepot [9-5 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Phil Verdigree [3-2 / Boxing / 236 lbs]

Cobblepot was one of those vocally against the addition of rounds but it seems to be working out just fine for him in the first round of the tournament as he plows his way through Verdigree.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jack Cobblepot [5:00, 2nd Round]

Gary Sampson [6-0 / Ground and Pound / 251 lbs] vs. Petey Barnum [2-2 / Boxing / 202 lbs]

The defending champion certainly looks the role during his entrance. On the longest winning streak in GAMMA history. It looked like the streak would continue on paper as Vegas’ number one in the tournament [sampson] took on someone who had pundits believing he would be soon cut from the GAMMA roster. Barnum obviously heard the rumors and looked for a way to prove he belonged and what better way than good old fashioned technical boxing? The jab, block, run worked perfectly for Barnum and while fans gritted their teeth as they watched it for fifteen minutes, it was clear that Barnum had a plan to win.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Petey Barnum [5:00, 2nd Round]

Kojuro Ijichi [6-4-1 / 169 lbs] vs. Vincent Chapin [2-2-2 / 226 lbs]

Kojuro’s reputation as a giant killer seems to have gone out the window and Vincent Chapin doesn’t seem to do any better with judges. In fact, he seems to be even slower and less deliberate in this fight. However, that doesn’t stop the judges from giving Chapin the victory over Ijichi.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Vincent Chapin [5:00, 3rd Round]

Mantas Andreyev [13-4 / Sambo / 205 lbs] vs. Henrik “Ice” Berg [6-4 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs]

With the both men hailing from Eastern Europe, Andreyev vs. Dorosklov would’ve been an amazing match to witness in the tournament. Instead we get Berg, who has a knack for stringing together upsets, against Andreyev, who’s only missed one final in the history of the tournament. If everything goes as planned, Andreyev will easily eliminate Berg. Of course, if everything was easy, there wouldn’t have been two upsets in the tournament already and Berg looks to continue his Cinderella run as he goes the full 15 minutes and the judges give him another win.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Henrik “Ice” Berg [5:00, 2nd Round]

Petey Barnum [3-2 / Boxing / 202 lbs] vs. Jack Cobblepot [10-5 / Grappling / 275 lbs]

Cobblepot / Barnum II lasted ten seconds less than the last fight, although it had the same finish. Cobblepot clobbering Barnum until the ref broke it off. Cobblepot and his corner clearly do not like Barnum and after the match, Cobblepot refused to shake Barnum’s hand.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Jack Cobblepot [00:16, 2nd Round]

Eugene Clough [6-5 / 285 lbs] vs. Eijiro Yanagita [4-4 / 152 lbs]

Clough looks to get back to his winning ways, Yanagita looks to win before heading out of GAMMA. Unfortunately for Yanagita, 133 pounds was hard to make up and Clough’s powerful fists simply outdo themselves giving Clough a TKO victory.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Eugene Clough [3:59, 1st Round]

GAMMA VII Tournament Finals – 2-15 Minute Rounds

Jack Cobblepot [11-5 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Henrik “Ice” Berg [7-4 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs]

Cobblepot looks to become the second fighter to become a two time tournament winner in this match while Berg looks to join the elite. This is one of those matches that most people in the audience wouldn’t want to miss. While it wasn’t the most exciting match up on paper, Cobblepot’s popularity and status as the number one American fighter [popularity wise] still gave the crowd a reason to watch as he fought the large Norwegian.

And that is what happened. 30 minutes of wrestling. No man really looking more dominant than the other. It was Cobblepot’s other strength, his fists, that led him to victory. Every time Berg attempted to shoot in, Cobblepot gave him a hook. It was amazing that Berg didn’t get a concussion. And this was the difference for both the judges and the fans as Cobblepot became a two-time tournament winner.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jack Cobblepot [15:00, 2nd Round]

Forgot to renew the PPV deal. Well that stinks, doesn’t it? Also not sure why tournament rules were different than non tournament matches. Need to fix that.

GAMMA Late Night Fights! 3

Back in Vegas for TV. Preliminaries results: Silvio Scirea def. Nash Harbane [uD], Barry Strachan def. Zachary Gilbert [uD], Ralph Kohl def. Ernie Bruns [TKO] and Pedro Sousa def. Claude Lerond [uD]. Also, changed rules again: This time all matches are two rounds, 1 10 minute round and 1 5 minute round.

Manol Sirakov [1-2-1 / Slugging / 260 lbs] vs. Noah Musch [2-3 / Full Contact Karate / 232 lbs]

After a run of disappointment, Musch looks to get back on track against Sirakov which he easily does giving Musch an even .500 and a new chance at redemption in his career.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Noah Musch [5:00, 2nd Round]

Stan Blackheath [1-0-1 / Brawling / 228 lbs] vs. Graham Goodbody [0-1 / Folkstyle Wrestling / 275 lbs]

Graham Goodbody shows up and shows everyone in GAMMA to wear a cup as a groin strike took Blackheath down and pretty much gave Goodbody the chance to pummel Blackheath for his first win.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Graham Goodbody [6:50]

Veeti Kuqi [3-4 / Finnish Ass Whippin’ / 275 lbs] vs. Cliff McAdam [0-2 / Gaelic Wrestling / 202 lbs]

Considering there are basically no rules as far as striking goes in GAMMA, it’s interesting to note that after nearly two years in existence tonight is the night with not only the first low blow in GAMMA history but the second as well. McAdam decided to hit Kuqi with a low blow that clearly sent Kuqi on a much different type of defense allowing McAdam to capitalize mentally and control the entire match.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Cliff McAdam [5:00, 2nd Round]

Frank Analysis [1-1 / Street Fighting / 233 lbs] vs. Solomon Austin [2-1-1 / Brawling / 315 lbs]

An extremely close match here that honestly is one of the closer ones in GAMMA history. It’s mainly a standup fight and Analysis shows that his street fighting background isn’t a joke as he manages to stay with Austin the entire time. After Judge 1 declared the fight a draw, it certainly seemed so but judge 2 and 3 voted in favor of Analysis giving Analysis a victory over the bigger man.

Winner by Majority Decision – Frank Analysis [5:00, 2nd Round]

Some housekeeping notes, tonight was Kuqi and Sirakov’s last fights in GAMMA. Kuqi went 3-5 and Sirakov went 1-3-1. Meaanwhile, Ralph Kohl joins two other GAMMA fighters to train under Mantas Andreyev at his fighting camp.

Great work so far. It is awesome to see so many of these Dawn of C-Verse style dynasties happening.

GAMMA 8: Superfight!

From New Jersey! Wk 4, Sat, October, 1992.

Main Event – Superfight I

Jack Cobblepot [12-5] vs. Gary Sampson [6-1]

Man, Cobblepot is such a drag in all games. At this stage he's so big and strong that I think he'll overwhelm Sampson.

Openweight Tournament

QF 1 – Oleg Dorosklov [3-1] vs. Vincent Chapin [3-2-2]

Interesting to see Dorosklov debut so early, so perhaps he wouldn't really be such a quality judoka all things being fair and equal. Chaplin was quite successful in my game in the early tournaments, but I suspect he'll be subbed out.

QF 2 – Norman Pike^ [2-0] vs. Ryosei Sakamoto^ [1-0]

Tough fight for Saka; Pike is a jet and should win by sub.

QF 3 – Eugene Clough [7-5] vs. Phil Verdigree [3-3]

I just see more ways for Verdigree to win - probably by TKO or decision here.

QF 4 – Henrik “Ice” Berg [7-5] vs. Petey Barnum [3-3]

If he can stay away from being taken down, Barnum should win.

SF 1 – Oleg Dorosklov vs. Norman Pike

Stormin' Norman's wrestling to prove too much for the Ukrainian and will advance to a debut final.

SF 2 – Phil Verdigree vs. Petey Barnum

No idea, honestly.

Finals – Norman Pike vs. Phil Verdigree

I suspect you've got yourself a big star in Pike here. How long it lasts, I'm not sure.

^ = Tournament Debut

Mick Curran [3-2-2] vs. Kojuro Ijichi [6-5-1]

Santiago Tosso [0-1] vs. Bence Bodor [0-1]

I totally agree with you on Oleg. As for Cobblepot, he's dominant. Too bad he dominates the same way everytime... Takedown, smother, takedown, smother. It's very annoying. And I love Norman Pike. I do hope he does well. He usually does well for me in default data (although in my latest game, he's dropped weight classes after going on a 4 fight losing streak after losing my heavyweight belt). Anyways back to this game...

GAMMA 8: Superfight!

From New Jersey, attempting to bring a larger event outside of Nevada and while New York would be a better place, their athletic commission is way too restrictive. They’re talking about certain rules ALL companies must follow and it just gave us a headache… Meanwhile, on another note: This is the first GAMMA tournament not to feature Jack Cobblepot [in the Superfight] or Mantas Andreyev [who declined to participate] so it should make for some interesting tournament. Plus, the first Superfight! While the Superfight would’ve been more exciting with Cobblepot / Andreyev, the match has been so overplayed that a fresh match like Cobblepot / Sampson [the last two tournament winners] gives viewers a new flavor. Onto the matches.

Henrik “Ice” Berg [7-5 / Norwegian Whale Wrestling / 305 lbs] vs. Petey Barnum [3-3 / Boxing / 202 lbs]

Berg and Barnum are both fighters that do well enough just to stay on the roster, but neither are someone you’d expect to win the tournament normally. However, this may be their moments to shine as with Andreyev and Cobblepot out, the only other former champion in the tournament is Clough. It gives us a wide open field and Barnum takes advantage by showing Berg that he is a boxer and makes this a stand up fight which Berg can’t handle.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Petey Barnum [5:00, 2nd Round]

Eugene Clough [7-5 / Wrestling / 285 lbs] vs. Phil Verdigree [3-3 / Boxing / 236 lbs]

The GAMMA II champion is the only former champion in the tournament and this gives Clough a significant advantage in experience alone. In contrast, Verdigree has never made it out of the first round and looks to do so. Unfortunately for the boxer, Clough’s standup game is far better than Verdigree’s ground game and Clough is able to control Verdigree in the entire fight.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Eugene Clough [5:00, 2nd Round]

Norman Pike [2-0 / Army Combatives / 210 lbs] vs. Ryosei Sakamoto [1-0 / Wrestling / 187 lbs]

A double tournament debut [and Sakamoto’s debut in the company] sees the company’s wonderkid Pike continue his climb towards the future. The announcers hype Pike as someone who could compete in GAMMA for years to come and certainly a tournament win would help the young Canadian who dominates Sakamoto and makes the young Japanese fighter tapout.

Winner by Submission – Norman Pike [2:29. 1st Round]

Oleg Dorosklov [3-1 / Judo / 185 lbs] vs. Vincent Chapin [3-2-2 / Wrestling / 226 lbs]

Dorosklov is certainly a favorite in the tournament. He has one of the easiest roads to the finals against Chapin and now the youngster Pike and with his experience in Judo tournaments, he certainly has the stamina and while it takes the full 15 minutes, Dorosklov manages to score enough points with the judges to score the victory over Chapin.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Oleg Dorosklov [5:00, 2nd Round]

Santiago Tosso [0-1 / Kick Boxing / 185 lbs] vs. Bence Bodor [0-1 / Professional Boxing / 232 lbs]

Bodor certainly looked up to the challenge and Tosso couldn’t handle the strikes. 55 seconds in and Bodor was declared the winner.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Bence Bodor [00:55]

Eugene Clough [8-5 / Wrestling / 285 lbs] vs. Petey Barnum [4-3 / Boxing / 202 lbs]

Clough is looking for his third finals and second championship while Barnum is looking to prove that he is a good fighter. However this goes much like Clough’s previous fight and Barnum simply can’t compete with Clough’s wrestling and striking giving Clough his third finals appearance.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Eugene Clough [4:19, 2nd Round]

Oleg Dorosklov [4-1 / Judo / 185 lbs] vs. Norman Pike [4-0 / Army Combatives / 210 lbs

Dorosklov EXPLODES from his corner and locks in a flying heel hook. This caught Pike off guard and forced the youngster to tap for a Dorosklov victory.

Winner by Submission [Heel Hook] – Oleg Dorosklov [00:32]

”Violent Conduct” Mick Curran [3-2-2 / Brawling / 201 lbs] vs. Kojuro Ijichi [6-5-1 / Wrestling / 169 lbs]

Ijichi played it smart and attempted to take Curran down from the get go. Unfortunately for Ijichi, Curran has a pretty darn good sprawl and is able to sprawl and just pound on Ijichi until the referee stops the fight.

Winner by Technical Knockout – Mick Curran [2:18]

GAMMA VIII Tournament Finals – 2-15 Minute Rounds

Oleg Dorosklov [5-1 / Judo / 185 lbs] vs. Eugene Clough [9-5 / Wrestling / 285 lbs]

Dorosklov replaces Andreyev as the standard Eastern European to be in a tournament finals and with good reason too, eh? Meanwhile, Clough is looking to continue his success. Meanwhile, the tournament winner gets a shot at the Superfight Championship at GAMMA IX according to the announcers. So there’s a lot at stake here and Dorosklov is clearly the fresher fighter after his last fight lasted under a minute. That stamina advantage would come into play as the fight went the full 30 minutes and was EXTREMELY close. In fact, some pundits saw the fight for Clough but the judges decided differently and after 30 minutes of some decent fighting, Oleg Dorosklov was declared the winner.

Winner by Unanimous Decision and GAMMA VIII Champion – Oleg Dorosklov [15:00, 2nd Round]

Superfight I – 2-15 Minute Rounds

Jack Cobblepot [12-5 / Grappling / 275 lbs] vs. Gary Sampson [6-1 / Ground and Pound / 251 lbs]

The crowd is buzzing as two Americans fight to decide the first Superfight champion. If Cobblepot were to win, this would certainly establish him as the dominant fighter in GAMMA but if Sampson were to win, as Vegas oddsmakers expected him to, Sampson would surely cement his status as a pioneer in GAMMA with the ground and pound. The first round is clearly Cobblepot’s too as he dominates Sampson and slows Sampson down by taking out his left leg. However the second round seems to be a turn of events as Sampson outwrestles Cobblepot and Cobblepot is completely gasses the entire round. The two go to the 30 minute time limit and await the judges decisions.

Judge One – Draw

Judge Two – Draw

Judge Three – Draw.

Unanimous Draw [15:00, 2nd Round]

Critical Rating – Average

Commercial Rating – Decent

Fight of the Night – Mick Curran vs. Kojuro Ijichi

KO of the Night – Eugene Clough [vs. Petey Barnum]

Submission of the Night – Norman Pike [vs. Ryosei Sakamoto]

PPV Buys – 75,200

Attendance – 2,172

So despite losing the pay per view on our last show, we’re able to maintain our 75k+ fans who watch us on pay per view. Meanwhile, a draw for the Superfight Title is NOT what we expected. Which leaves us in a pickle, whether to give Cobblepot and Sampson another match or to give Oleg Dorosklov a shot with one of them or another fighter… Well it wasn’t something to worry about now as we had bigger fish to fry: Turkey Bowl II. That's right. Turkey Bowl is back and why not? It's a fun little tournament.
