Last Gasp of the AWA - 1987

Recommended Posts

I was never a fan of the Blackwell that I saw when they would re-run the AWA. I thought he was a great talker but that was about it. I have to go with Adrian in this one.

Blackwell always seemed to be better as the villian beating up smaller face heros. But he did have a couple good runs after he broke with Sheik Adnan when he teamed with Sgt Slaughter. I agree he was a good talker, but only rated 38 on the mic (56 overall entertainment). Big brute with that country drawl and twang

What is the Crippler around 80 at the start of the mod?

Ray Stevens is 51 according to the data base, but I get your point. He is semi-active in the game.

Sgt Slaughter vs Jerry Lawler

This two going one on one during the peak of their career is going to be awesome.

flipped a coin... this one can either way

I agree this could be the show stealer. And agree on the coin flip. This is the fun part about doing a tournament - the latter matches could be some stellar main events (and some you wouldn't normally book unless you found a good angle to bring them together)

Yamda vs Rocco

This one as we fast forward to 2012, we would be looking for clips of it on youtube

classic! I hope they deliver a solid match. I'm hoping this is the one that puts our LW title on the map and is the starting point for big things to come.

Stevens vs Gordy

Gordy going to make some waves

If things go as planned, that will be the understatement of the year!

how's that for a little teaser of things to come?

SnukaSaito

Look for Snuka to continue his winning ways for now

Nick-Wahoovs Russians

Would like to pick the Russians as I would like to see Bockwinkle go out with a nice heel run with the Brain and turning on Wahoo would be good 1st step

Gagne vs Ratamyus

Gagne in a landslide

Yamda vs Rocco

Yamda easy in a hohum match

Rosevs Shawn

Tough matchup but Rose has mo and if Michaels is pushed too hard WWF will steal

Sarge vs Lawler

DDQ - in a war

Steiner vs Spoiler

Steiner is up and coming and Spoiler is a good wrestler tat he could learn some things from in a short mid level program. Take Spoiler

Blackwell vs Adonis

Never did really like Blackwell and did like Adonis before last WWF run

Stevens vs Gordy

Gordy forgt the Karbo Kup and do what you should. Become AWA champion and beat Snuka

Best match of night: Stevens vs Gordy

worst match of night: Rocco vs Yamda

<p>As a die hard AWA fan(never ever cared for the WWF/E's product ever)I've enjoyed this diary.</p><p>

Predictions</p><p>

Snuka vs Saito...<strong>Saito </strong>takes the title. 1.Always dug Saito 2.Just to be opposite of everyone who says there is no way Snuka loses</p><p> </p><p>

Bockwinkel/McDaniel(what a team that would've made) vs The Russians...<strong>Bockwinkel/McDaniel</strong> retain.</p><p> </p><p>

Greg Gagne vs Ratamyus(Gagne is always so unfairly trashed by everyone)<strong>Gagne</strong> retains shocking everyone.</p><p> </p><p>

Flying Yamada vs Mark Rocco..<strong>.Yamada</strong> defeats Rocco</p><p> </p><p>

Rose vs Michaels...<strong>Buddy Rose </strong>takes down Michaels</p><p> </p><p>

Slaughter vs Lawler.....<strong>The Sarge</strong> takes out the King.</p><p> </p><p>

Steiner vs Spoiler..Steiner's time isn't now and <strong>Spoiler</strong> still has some mileage so Spoiler wins</p><p> </p><p>

Adonis vs Blackwell both hugely underrated. Most just saw two fat guys but Adonis could still bump like crazy even at 400lbs and Blackwell was really good til the health problems kicked in.</p><p>

Probably a push so lets say <strong>Blackwell </strong>defeats Adonis</p><p> </p><p>

Stevens vs Gordy..as much as I loved Stevens(even Bockwinkel defers to Stevens as the greatest worker ever) Gordy is in his prime so <strong>Gordy </strong>beats Stevens</p><p> </p><p>

Best match:Adonis/Blackwell just because you don't expect much out of a couple 400 lb plus guys.</p><p>

Worst of the Night:Truthfully I don't see a "bad" matchup but lets say Bockwinkel/McDaniel vs the Russians Soldat hasn't been doing too well the whole time so he's gonna be the drag on the card.</p>

WEEK 1 JULY 1987

AWA goes on tour to the Great Lakes

Sell out crowd of 4416 at the Deltaplex in Walker Michigan

Dark matches: Russians maul Ricky Rice and Mark Young. Running Headbutt Drop by Zukov finishes off Rice in another match with solid action, no heat. Russians teamwork seems to be coming together quite well as they gear up to face the world tag team champs at the 4th of July

Also: Norvel Austin defeats DJ Peterson: DJ was tiring and Austin took him to task. Solid action despite lack of heat. Norvel scores the pin. Nice to see DJ pick up some skills, overness, and momentum in the loss.

Superfly Snuka warms up the live crowd as he shows off the world title. "I have Mr Saito coming up at the 4th of July supershow - a man I've never beaten before. He may think he has my number, but I am training every day to ensure I leave as the champion. I want to thank all you fans for coming out tonight and showing your support to the Superfly. Enjoy the show! (77)

Terry Gordy vs Marty Jannetty:

good action and good crowd! Marty can't handle the pressure of an all-out match even though both men put on a great show. Gordy catches the Rocker with a Power Bomb at 18:11 to score the win. When asked who he wanted to be his partner at Karbo Kup, Gordy brushed Lee Marshall aside and said the world will find out this Saturday on tv.

Match Rating: 74

Cobra Corps vs Southern Rockers

Solid action, but no heat -- Sarge came out of the match looking good, pinning Scott Peterson at 12:11 with a Gutbuster. Scott and GI Jack both improve technical skills (58)

Sarge and GI Jack had a few words after the match - namely that they intend to collect on the bounty on the 4th of July. "You already lost your crown to us Lawler. On the 4th, we take your head too"

(70)

The Spoiler vs Scott Steiner

great chemistry between these two. Scott is a star here in the Great Lakes where he is long-time WWA champ. Spoiler intended to take away that title, but got a little too aggressive. He had the Bionic Claw applied in the ropes and did not break the hold when the referee commanded. DQ at 14:25. Steiner is looking forward to the supercard rematch as is the Spoiler

Match Rating: 69

Grudge tag team match: Snuka & Gagne vs Rose and Gilbert

The Buddy Rose-Greg Gagne battle spills over to tag team action - Gagne chooses long-time Rose nemisis Jimmy Snuka as his partner. Rose counters with rising star Hotstuff Eddie Gilbert. What a battle it was as both sides ripped into the other. Rose would love a win over Snuka to earn him another shot at the world title, but it did not come to pass. Gagne scores the pin on Gilbert after a dropkick at 18:44.

Rating: 74

Rose did not take the loss very kindly as he attacks Gagne after the bout and leaves him down and out. "I'll take care of you next week, one on one!!"

BOUNTY MATCH

Jerry Lawler vs Dirty Dick Murdoch

Paul E Dangeroulsy brings out Dirty Dick Murdoch as the next man to attempt to collect on the bounty. Hard fought match; good crowd, good action. Lawler outlasts Dirty Dick's tactics. He pulls the strap and lays out Murdoch with hard punches. Then seals the deal with a Piledriver at 21:15

Rating: 75

ROCK AMERICA - ELITE 8 match-up

NICK BOCKWINKLE VS ADRIAN ADONIS

great heat and great action!! Two great stars showing how it's done. Nice ebb and flo to the match as both men got to show their skills off. Crusher Blackwell distracts Adonis momentarialy allowing Bockwinkle to lock on the Sleeper!! 46:27, Bockwinkle advances to the next round of Rock America

Match Rating: 83

Final Show Rating: 74 which should help improve our standing in the Great Lakes.

NOTE: Pretty good show as even the losers gained some momentum and popularity since they were facing more popular stars locally.

Adonis gave a very good accounting against the former champion of the world, and many think he could have gotten the win if not for the distraction of Crusher Blackwell. He will get his chance at revenge on the 4th of July card. Tune in to ESPN this weekend to find out who Terry Gordy chooses to be his tag team partner at the Karbo Kup!!

The show is ranked #9 all time for the AWA, right behind the recent Battle by the Bay supercard. Nick Bockwinkle vs Adrian Adonis will go down as the 6th best match so far. The top 6 all include Bockwinkle. Lawler has 4 top 10 matches. He will hope to add another when he faces Sgt Slaugher at the 4th of July supercard. That card is shaping up and should lead in nicely to the big CHICAGO STADIUM SHOW at the end of the month. More news on that supercard Sunday at the 4th of July "Fist and Fireworks" spectacular

why all the hate on Blackwell?

I may have to rethink my plan to have Greg lose the tv title

I don't know. I never really got into Blackwell when he was with the Sheik but my history of the AWA before 1981 isn't very good. Always liked Sheik Adnan but for some reason when Blackwell was with him I didn't get into it and after that he never got over with me anyway as a babyface. He didn't have the personality or charisma to be a good babyface from what I remember.

  • 2 weeks later...

All-Star Wrestling

sell out crowd of 300 in Alabama (SE)

Superfly Snuka kicks off the tv show with a fired up promo "I hear all kinds of people are lining up for a shot at the AWA world title. Mr Saito has the next shot, but men like Adrian Adonis, Buddy Rose, Sgt Slaughter and others are waiting in the wings. The Superfly backs down from no man so just sign your names to the dotted line bruthas"

74

Crusher Jerry Blackwell vs Cocoa Samoa

these two did not click. Adnan did his best work at ringside trying to salvage the match - Blackwell splash at 11:21 gives him the win. Crusher looks in fine form and ready to meet Adrian Adonis on the 4th of July

38

video segment to hype the upcoming Slaughter vs Lawler match on the 4th of July

76

The Terrorist vs Charlie Cook

Neither man looked all that sharp out there. Cook gets a submission win at 7:33

36

Ratamyus vs Ricky Rice

average crowd and some decent action (best match of the show so far) Ratamyus gets the submission with his Devil's Triangle at 7:54. Ratamyus is picking up some steam and should give TV Champ Greg Gagne all he can handle and then some at the holiday supercard.

44

Hotstuff Eddie Gilbert reminds everyone that he is the rising star of the AWA. I've got my eyes on all the title belts. Whether it's the tag titles with my good friend Buddy Rose....or maybe Yamada's little JR title. Or how about the TV title held by Greg Gagne. Heck I might even heat things up for the grand poopah of them all - we all heard Superfly Snuka out here asking for challengers to sign their name on the dotted line....all I need to do now is find a contract!

Hotstuff Eddie Gilbert vs Johnny Paul

Eddie's performance was the stand out of the show. Average crowd and decent action before Paul started tiring. Gilbert finished him off with a Fireball. 10:02. Jimmy Snuka ran out with a wet towel to cover the face of Johnny Paul after the dastardly fireball.

52

TV Show goes off the air with a video hyping some new superstars who are making their way to the AWA. 78

FINAL SHOW RATING: 52

the angles truly saved this show

Saturday night's ESPN show show will have the final push and hype for the 4th of July show the following day.

On a personal note, things should be getting back to normal for me. Started a new job last week (will have a grueling 6 week training program right off the bat to help me pass the necessary tests). It was nice having a month long vacation and getting to travel around the country some; however, a death in the family did put a damper on things.

That distraction gave Yamada an opening to unleash a fury of lightening fast moves. He had Adonis laid out and climbed to the top rope for a high risk move - when rival Mark Rocco attacks and shoves him to the floor. Jimmy Snuka left the broadcast table to clean house and issued a warning to Adonis. On the eve of our 4th of July "fist and fireworks" supershow, let's take a look at some of the other holiday supercards from around the country:

In WWC, Bruiser Brody is the new WWC Universal HW champion, defeating Carlos Colon (81). Also on the card, The Invaders over Los Pastores (53 -- btw, that's the Sheepherders in case you didn't know -- also interesting note regarding this match: Invader #2 and Sheepherder Luke Williams are the current tag champs). Ron Starr over Tommy Lane and Monster Ripper destroys La Tigress. (71 rated show)

In Memphis, the CWA Survival of the Fittest: Giant Hillbilly and Rocky Johnson teamed to defeat Austin Idol & Tommy Rich in the main event (61). Bam Bam Bigelow and Lord Jonathan Boyd defeat Brickhouse Brown and Superstar Bill Dundee (61). Billy Joe Travis and Jeff Jarrett retain the Southern tag belts over Phil Hickerson and Mr Shima (51). other matches, Steve Kiern over JT Southern, Jack Hart defeats Colorado Kid, King Cobra and Gypsy Joe defeat Bruise Brothers, and the team of Soul Train Jones & Mark Starr are victorious over Downtown Bruno's team of Big Bubba & Goliath. (Show rating: 59)

STAR WARS -- WCCW travels to LA for their show in front of 8,000:

Kevin Von Erich sends them home happy as he retains the world championship over Al Perez (75 -- this despite Al's hired Assassin Abdullah the Butcher attacking Kevin earlier in the show, 66). The Spoiler defeats Tony Atlas (54 -- Spoiler will have his hands full with another powerhouse Sunday as he faces Scott Steiner). Duo of Doom retain the world tag titles over Steve and Shaun Simpson. Also on the card, Spike Huber over Cousin Junior. In 6-man action, Frankie the Thumper Lancaster, Dingo Warrior and Skip Young join forces to defeat The Cat, Steve Dane, and Jeep Swenson. Abdullah the Butcher retains the Brass Knux title over Mike Davis and the Grappler whips Black Bart in the opener. (68 rated show)

But the BIG ONE is tonight, tonight, tonight!! Superfly Snuka defends the AWA title against a man he has never beaten - Mr Saito. AWA Tag titles on the line as Nick Bockwinkle and Wahoo McDaniel take on the Russians. JR Title match sees Flying Yamada vs Mark Rocco in a feud that crosses 3 continents. Greg Gagne defends the TV title against Ratamyus. The match everyone is talking about - Sgt Slaughter vs Jerry Lawler. In a Rock America quarterfinal, Buddy Rose meets Shawn Michaels. Battle of the ages, Ray Stevens vs Terry Gordy. Grudge match, Adrian Adonis vs Jerry Blackwell, Spoiler vs Scott Steiner. Don't miss a minute of the action.....BE THERE!

Over 10,000 fans jam the SW arena for this holiday supershow

They are treated to a preshow battle royal that came down the DJ Peterson, Rip Oliver, Dennis Condrey, and Marty Jannetty. Oliver and Condrey strike a deal as do Peterson and Jannetty. Condrey does the dirty work by eliminating both Peterson and Jannetty. While he rests at the ropes to enjoy his handiwork, Oliver takes advantage by sneaking behind and dumping Condrey out of the ring. Condrey stares up at the gloating Oliver.

live show promo to kick things off - Terry Funk welcomes us to the wild west saloon where there's always apt to be a shoot-out. No different today as we have 2 guys from different eras. Old school wily veteran Crippler Ray Stevens and brash young gun and rising superstar Terry Gordy. Stevens is glad to be back in the wild west once again. "Last month, I proved I am still the best as I put away Rip Oliver. This time I get to shut up another loud mouth punk in this Terry Gordy". Don Carson leads Gordy onto the set - "Listen up BOY!! You're just another road block in my path to being a star. After tonight, you'll be nothing more than road kill"

TITLE MATCH: Flying Yamada defends vs Black Tiger Mark Rocco

Light-heavyweight title match and the first of Sheik Adnan's challenge to capture all the belts in one night. Good action, (but despite my efforts not much heat). Yamada went to the air and Rocco tried to slow him down with his ground and pound strategy. In the end, Sheik Adnan got involved - when Yamada climbed to the top turnbuckle for a dive, Adnan whacked him in the back with his sword sending him crashing to the mat. Rocco covers and becomes the new champ. 1-0 for Adnan! (59)

Scott Steiner vs The Spoiler

Spoiler uses the ropes for leverage to steal the win at 10:18. Good action but even their chemistry could not help improve the match quality to the level we've seen them before. (48)

Spoiler wants to continue to beat on young Steiner after the match and guest announcer Terry Funk had seen enough!! Funk climbs into the ring and pulls Spoiler off - "he's had enough. I respect how he stood up to you and continued to fight - so why don't you just back off now and let him be" Spoiler glared at Funk but did just that - as he exited the ring he warned Funk to mind his own business

TV TITLE MATCH: Greg Gagne defends vs Ratamyus

tv title match had an average crowd reaction and decent in ring action. Gagne was on the receiving end of a lot of punishment as the match wore on - but then Gagne gets his second wind and comeback. Greg uses the Good Hands Sleeper to put the monster away. Sheik Adnan's army will not take all the gold on this night' (51)

Adrian Adonis vs Crusher Jerry Blackwell

solid action and avg heat. Blackwell was a lot to handle, but Adonis wore him down and put him away with a bulldog (57)

Adonis says with that victory, he becomes the #1 contender for the world title. Superfly Snuka -if you get by Saito tonight I'll be waiting. If Saito wins, the fans will see one of the greatest matches of all time when we collide

Freebird Terry Gordy vs Crippler Ray Stevens

great heat and great action!! We expected a match that could steal the show and we got that in spades!! Stevens played to the crowd and had them solidly behind him. Gordy played the role of monster heel to the hilt - he sold well for Ray's offense but then slowed him down and punished the legend. Momentum of the match builds as Stevens mounts his super human comeback at the end - only to fall short and falls to the Gordy Powerbomb at 20:53. match really lifted the crowd (80)

Jerry Lawler says a few words about his upcoming match against Slaughter - "this has gone on long enough. I'm tired of the taunts and insults about my crown - I am the King of Memphis not England. I'll beat you Sarge even with Der Kaiser in your corner. Then I'm gonna want my crown back

WORLD TAG TITLES: Wahoo McDaniel & Nick Bockwinkle vs The Russians

decent match and crowd - Bockwinkle puts away Zukov with the Oriental Sleeper at 11:39 (Soldat was tired) -- 52 rating

After the match Arnold walks out and lets the tag champs know he has a little surprise for them. I'm actually glad you won because this week on ESPN you will face my new team of the Blade Runners, but tonight I want to show you my latest addition to the Gun Club -- a massive 500 pound monster walks out wearing a strange mask that was blowing steam out the side and top. 2nd ROCK AMERICA Quarterfinal match

Jerry Lawler vs Sgt Slaughter w/ Der Kaiser Von Raschke

Rock America quarterfinal match, grudge match, bounty match -- great action and a good crowd. Back and forth action as both men are fired up by the crowd. Der Kaiser nails Lawler with Sarge's riding crop allowing Slaughter to dish out some punishment. A second time, Sarge holds Lawler for a repeat - only this time Lawler breaks away and Von Rashke nails Sarge!! Lawler pulls the strap down and floors Der Kaiser with a hard right hand. He turns his full attention to Slaughter who begs off - no dice, Lawler pounds him with rights and lefts. Sarge tries to pull some powder out of his tights and Lawler sees just in time and kicks Slaughter's hand causing the powder to go into his own eyes. Jerry takes advantage of the temporary blindness and sets Sarge up for the Royal Piledriver for the victory. 22:30 Lawler advances (79)

WORLD TITLE MATCH: Superfly Jimmy Snuka vs Masa Saito (w/ Sheik Adnan)

good action, avg heat. Sheik Adnan tried every trick in his book to try to capture the greatest prize of the night. In the end, it was to no avail. Snuka was ready for all the tricks and was well prepared for his great nemesis. For good measure, Snuka used the ropes for leverage when he got the final pinfall. 22:45. Title defense #13 for Snuka
