CCW: The rebirth of Tradition!

Life sure is funny…One day you’re looking after a dusty old gym for a family friend and the next you’re booking a show for a revived Chicago Championship Wrestling. Hmm, maybe I should explain a bit. First off, my name is Sam Griffon, “Griff” to my friends. The Minnesota Mauler was a friend of my grandfathers. As a favor to him, I was given a job at Mauler’s gym. It was an easy enough job. I made sure the bills got paid, the equipment was still in working order, and that no one stole any of the CCW memorabilia. Then Mauler died…and everything changed. Mauler’s will was read and everything involving CCW was left to Demon Spite, with one small stipulation. Should Spite ever decide to revive CCW he would have to hire me on as head booker. I laughed my ass off when I heard that, until Spite actually decided to do just that. So, I’m the head booker for CCW and I have no clue what I am doing!

After all the paperwork was completed, Spite walked me through a few of the basics of booking. He then showed me a website called Total Extensive Wrestling or TEW for short. Apparently, someone took the time to rate all the wrestlers on a bunch of different stats, and every booker was going by said stats. Spite informed me that I couldn’t hire anyone with less than a D- in Charisma or Selling or with Known Problems with the Law. While this limited me on who I could hire it didn’t do so in such a big way as to cripple the company. I quickly used the filter function of TEW to compile a list of just who was eligible to work for us. Some of the names were rather impressive even if I knew we wouldn’t be able to hire them. Using the E-Mail function of TEW I sent out several invites to perspective roster members and waited for their replies. If I was able to sign even half of who I wanted CCW was going to be a huge success.

Spite came to me with a few things he needed to make clear. He told me that despite our $50,000 initial bank balance he wanted us to have at least $75,000 at the end of 32 Months time. He also stressed that we needed to Maintain our current TEW Popularity standing if not improve on it. According to TEW we are sitting at an F+ in the Great Lakes Region. The Popularity request by Spite seemed like a cake walk but having improved our finances to 75 Grand…well, that seemed a bit tricky considering the amount of money we looked to be spending if all the people I wanted agreed to work for us. Speaking of contracts, I got some replies from several of the people I E-Mailed and it looks like I’ll be at the negotiating table soon.

Man, is it difficult to get people to agree to work for us or what. You would think that these guys who are out of work would be lining up to wrestle for us instead of trying to hold us up for more money. Regardless, I was able to sign a complete roster of 12 workers as well as a couple of announcers, a color commentator, a manager, and a ref.

Ace Youngblood: An up and comer in MAW, we get the benefit of Rip’s training without having to pay for the school! Ace isn’t anything special yet, but some day down the road he just might be…and if we’re lucky he will still be working for us when it happens!

Air Attack Weasel: A staple of CZCW, he has a talent for selling which he can share with the rest of the CCW roster. Other than that one talent, I don’t have a lot planned for Weasel…unless he could come up with some new gimmick.

Animal Harker: A fairly young, green, and sloppy worker who has plenty of time to mature into a decent worker. For some reason the fans really seem to love him and I am hoping we can use that to put on some passable matches. He also works for NYCW which should allow him the opportunity to learn from twice as many people. He might be a star some day, but right now he’s lucky to have a job with two companies willing to give him the chance to improve.

Arthur Dexter Bradley: The younger brother of Rhino Umaga, he is flyer which is an oddity for a Samoan wrestler. He works for FCW as well as us so that needs to be remembered just so we don’t have a night where he is unavailable. I have some hope his charisma will get fans to love to hate him.

Davis Wayne Newton: He's young, talented, and is one of only a handful of people trained by Rip Chord himself. He can become a huge name in CCW, as long as he doesn't develop an ego or get snatched away by another company. As a side note, he works for 4C who are bigger than us so we need to book our shows around his schedual if we want to use him.

Greg Gauge: What could be said for one Gauge brother, could also be said for the other. They are young, fundamentally sound, and trained by one of the biggest names in the business…their father Sam Keith(Gauge). Either one could be a top guy in CCW if they stick around long enough to see that happen.

Hugh de Aske: A huge draw with the kids and fans of romance novels, Hugh is actually related to pirates of days past. Little known fact about Hugh is that Hugh is his middle name and his first name is Steve. Apparently he thinks Hugh has more of a pirate sound to it and I tend to agree. I mean, who ever heard of Steve the Pirate? As long pirates are “in” he should be a staple of CCW for years to come.

Island Boy Apollo: A huge star in his native Puerto Rico, Apollo is an exciting brawler. Not as well known here in Chicago, unless you go to the Puerto Rican side of town, he still has a presence that screams Star. Unless some unforeseen disaster strikes, look for him to be on top of CCW very soon.

Joseph Benning: Often called “Regular” for his non-descript manner, his grasp of the basics should go a long way to helping him stand out in CCW. I’m still on the fence about giving Joe a gimmick as being the “normal” guy in CCW might be gimmick enough. Given his young age, he is another guy who will only get better with time.

Leo Davis: At 42, Leo is the veteran of the roster. I would say his career was the ****s but let’s face it, it wasn’t that good. He is a reminder of where we all could end up should we only do enough to get by. I’m not looking for much out of Leo and neither should you.

Matthew Keith: What could be said for one Keith brother, could also be said for the other. They are young, fundamentally sound, and trained by one of the biggest names in the business…their father Sam Keith(Gauge). Either one could be a top guy in CCW if they stick around long enough to see that happen.

Rav “Rhino” Umaga: One of several tough as nails men from Samoa, Rhino is the elder brother of Akima Brave of SWF fame. With a fearsome look, a great grasp of ring psychology, and sound basics the only thing that could keep Rhino from dominated CCW is if another federation snapped him up on a written deal. Right now he also works for CGC so we need to take care in our scheduling so as not to be without him on our card.

Running Wolf: Almost as green as Animal Harker but twice as impressive looking. Running Wolf is a big man who would be at home among body builders and weight lifters. Add to that his Native heritage and willingness to bring it to the ring with him, Running Wolf could be a huge star some day. Of all the guys I hired, he is the one most likely to get signed up to RIPW on a developmental deal from the SWF.

Samuel “Griff” Griffin: At 18, I’m the youngest member of the CCW roster. With all the time spent around The Minnesota Mauler I have a basic grasp of the basics, a decent understanding of psychology, and one hell of a right hook! The biggest thing I got going for me is my look, which people tell me has star written all over it. If you ask me though, I think I look like a skinny little ****…but then again so did Enygma.

Samoan Machine: Another tough Samoan, only from a different family than Rhino. Despite this, they often wrestle as “brothers” or “cousins” depending on where they are at the time. He worked for the failed INSPIRE federation and due to this he has a reputation as one of the toughest men in this sport. Like Rhino he also works for CGC so if we schedule a conflict we are going to be missing out our two best workers! Also like Rhino, he seems a likely candidate to get snatched up on a written contract with one of the big federations real soon.

Senor Suerte: AKA “Mr. Lucky” he is the wrestler formerly known as Nomad. After a quick chat, it was decided he should play up his Mexican roots since we have such a big Hispanic population in Chicago. He has charisma, a look that screams “star”, and genuinely good acting ability. If he ever learns to work the mic he will surely become a household name and a Main Eventer in either TCW or SWF.

Stretch the Chicken Boy: Stretch is an awful worker. He brings nothing to the table, yet I hired him because of the one thing he does have…Heart. Unlike some other people who were born with loads of talent they waste on being lazy and dickish, Stretch goes out and tries his hardest each and every time. If popularity was measured by desire to be in this business then Stretch would be in the Hall of Immortals. As long as Stretch wants to be here, CCW will welcome him.

The Big Problem: The one man on the roster with more to prove than anyone else. So far he has failed to live up to the hype NYCW generated around him at the time of his debut. Hopefully he can get his act together and prove to everyone that he isn’t the “flop” they have labeled him but rather a genuine star in the making. I for one hope he does just that.

Heather B: Heather is more of a valet than a manager, but I’m hoping putting her together with The Big Problem will help both of them rise above their perceived worth. If anything we can flaunt her assets to get some cheap pops from the crowd.

I was sitting at my desk trying to figure out the first card for CCW when Spike came in and gave me yet another “goal.” He informed me that the new CCW needed to pay homage to the old and so every show would need to have a tag team match as the Main Event! Well, there go all my plans!

Finally, Machine and Rhino did go at it and the crowd went nuts as neither man gave an inch. Apollo was taken down by Hugh with a DDT on the outside and then Hugh slipped into the ring and nailed Rhino with a chop block allowing Machine to take Rhino up and out of the ring with a scoop slam. Apollo can back into the ring but Machine landed a huge headbutt that took Apollo off his feet. Davis Wayne Newton: He's young, talented, and is one of only a handful of people trained by Rip Chord himself. He can become a huge name in CCW, as long as he doesn't develop an ego or get snatched away by another company. As a side note, he works for 4C who are bigger than us so we need to book our shows around his schedual if we want to use him.</p>

Unlike last month, Rhino and Machine spent the majority of the time in the ring with each other, putting on a great display of brawling and techical moves. Machine gained the upper hand on Rhino with a Dragon Sleeper, allowing Hugh to get a blind tag. Rhino remaine isolated, until hefinally got a tag to Apollo who proceded to clear house as the crowd went nuts. WOW! We just hit a Size Ranking of Small on the TEW company size chart. Our last show which was pretty good, if I say so myself, was just enough to bump us up. We are now being allowed to hold shows of the “Medium” size. This means we need to hold shows of at least 90 Minutes instead of our usual 60. Also we need to hire 3 more workers not to seem like our roster is small. I was able to hire 5 new workers which I shall remain mum about to avoid spoilers appearing on the net and ruining a surprise for our next show.

Arthur Dexter Bradley: The younger brother of Rhino Umaga, he is flyer which is an oddity for a Samoan wrestler. He works for FCW as well as us so that needs to be remembered just so we don’t have a night where he is unavailable. I have some hope his charisma will get fans to love to hate him.

Ace Youngblood: An up and comer in MAW, we get the benefit of Rip’s training without having to pay for the school! Ace isn’t anything special yet, but some day down the road he just might be…and if we’re lucky he will still be working for us when it happens!

Greg Gauge and Matthew Keith: What could be said for one, could also be said for the other. They are young, fundamentally sound, and trained by one of the biggest names in the business…their father Sam Keith(Gauge). Running Wolf returns to action after taking a month off due to his tough loss against The Big Problem. Air Attack Weasel is still suffering from the beating he took at the hands of Problem.
