TOP 1: The Beginning

Preview

Welterweight bout

Heikichi Shimizu (2–0) vs. Eiji Masuko (1–0)

Two world class judo masters from Japan, neither have much experience in MMA. Both are currently towards the bottom of the welterweight rankings, but will be looking to improve their position with a win.

Light Heavyweight bout

Valentin Taneyev (5–0) vs. William Harrison (3–0)

Fighting in his homeland of Russia, Valentin Taneyev will look to use the homefield advantage against his American opponent William Harrison. Both fighters match up evenly for the most part, but Taneyev's slight edge in striking and wrestling might be the difference. A win for either fighter will likely push them to the cusp of the top 15 within the division.

Middleweight bout

Mal Phe Roby (15–4) vs. Ashley Ballard (10–0)

A muay thai vs. kick boxing matchup, neither fighter is extremely skilled on the ground. Mal Phe Roby possesses strong muay thai but is otherwise unremarkable on the ground with below average submission skills. Where Ashley Ballard holds an advantage is in his striking game which he is strong in both power and elusiveness. Both are world ranked middleweights, but find themselves toward the back of the pack in a stacked division.

Featherweight bout

Chan Wan Wah (6–0) vs. Frank Romita (7–1)

While being the lone 145-pound fight on the card, don't sleep on the little guys. Chan Wan Wah can pack a powerful punch and is also a strong muay thai fighter, but he might get himself in trouble if he ends up on the ground with Frank Romita, the superior wrestler. The Boston native will definitely look to utilize his advantage on the ground and force the fight there. A win for either man would likely propel them to the brink of the top ten among the featherweights.

Light Heavyweight bout

Rafael van der Moot (7–0) vs. Matti Kurri (7–0–1)

In an all-European affair featuring two young and promising undefeated fighters, the world class striking of Rafael van der Moot will be on display. The Finn Matti Kurri will most certainly hope to use his wrestling background to neutralize the far superior striking game that his Dutch opponent possesses.

Welterweight bout

Nathan Chambers (16–1) vs. Xie Ming (20–4)

A pair of top-12 fighters in the 170-pound division square off in a battle of wrestling vs. muay thai disciplines. Xie Ming looks like quite the underdog here with his only distinct advantage being his kicking skill and power. Nathan Chambers holds almost every other advantage in the matchup, presenting him with many avenues in which to finish the fight. A Chambers win would almost assuredly put him in the top four in the division, one step closer to a title shot.

Middleweight bout

Joaquim Fontes (21–3) vs. Haranobu Oshiro (15–5)

The world class jiu jitsu of Brazilian Joaquim Fontes faces a worthy opponent in the Japanese striker Haranobu Oshiro. With great wrestling and submission skills, Fontes hopes to get Oshiro to the ground as quick as possible, but he will have to be careful and not get caught by the strong boxing and kicking power of the youngster from Hiroshima. Fontes should be motivated knowing that a win certainly puts him on the short list of first challengers after the Middleweight champion is determined.

Heavyweight Championship semi-final bout

Hassan Fezzik (25–0) vs. Elzo Alves Moura (12–0)

In the first of two semi finals to determine the inaugural TOP Heavyweight champion, the previous ALPHA-1 Heavyweight champion Hassan Fezzik faces the top man from Brazil's FLB promotion, Elzo Alves Moura. Practicing in the vale tudo style of fighting in his native country, Moura is going to need quite a bit of luck to pull off the upset. With a world class wrestling background and elements of both jiu jitsu and judo, Fezzik will most certainly provide all sorts of trouble for the younger Brazilian. No need to remind either fighter what is on the line as the winner moves one step closer to the Heavyweight championship.

Heavyweight Championship semi-final bout

James Foster (32–4–1) vs. Grzegorz Boniek (33–4)

Boasting a similar world class wrestling background, previous GAMMA Heavyweight champion James Foster will get in the ring with the former SIGMA alpha dog, Grzegorz Boniek. Similar to Foster, the Polish Boniek also brings a wrestling style to his fights, but not of the same quality. A second surprising upset would be required to derail the expected finals matchup of Foster vs. Fezzik.

Lightweight Championship quarter-final bout

Jake Keane (22–4) vs. Branco (16–5)

With the top two lightweights in the world receiving a bye into the semi finals, four other previous champions will battle it out to determine a final four. The first of these such matchups features the former top 155-pounder in England, Jake Keane, against the Brazilian from FLB, Branco. With both fighters citing a background in striking, it is no surprise that both are fairly decent in their standing game. Where the difference might come is in the superiority of Keane's ground game, something Branco might struggle to contain.

Lightweight Championship quarter-final bout

Luis Basora (19–3) vs. Fumiaki Hayashi (16–4)

In the second bout with advancement implications for the Lightweight championship, the world class judo Spaniard Luis Basora goes toe-to-toe with the Japanese striker Fumiaki Hayashi. The former ALPHA-1 champion will have a punchers chance if he can keep Basora on his feet, easier said than done. A SIGMA veteran, Basora's gameplan will surely involve trying to take Hayashi down and wrestle him into submission.

Heavyweight Championship bout

Fezzik/Moura vs. Foster/Boniek

In the main event of the evening, anything less than the expected Hassan Fezzik vs. James Foster superfight would be a major disappointment. A matchup that many MMA fans have been drooling about seeing for years is only a few fights away from becoming reality, and what better way to see the two legends square off then with the TOP Heavyweight championship on the line.

Ashley just does not have what it takes to beat anyone that is good.

Chan Wan Wah (6–0) vs. Frank Romita (7–1)

I hardly ever run companies where there are Featherweights. That being said in the past when I have it is usually an American based promotion and I have hired Frank in the past. I have no clue as to how good Chan is so I am going to go with Frank.
