GAMMA: Worldwide

Recommended Posts

The year is 1990, and Mixed Martial Arts has just been introduced to the public. But, not in the form of any one promotion's event. Instead, for the past 5 years, a promotion going by the name of the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts has been heavily promoting itself and the sport, despite never having held an event. For five years, they have built themselves, and made deals with various countries to host events under their banner. And finally in 1990, all of their work and focus will become official.

In 1995, GAMMA will host a world wide tournament, with only the best fighters from every part of the world, from Australia to Brazil, every country and continent will have a representative. And from 1990-1995, fighters from all over the world will compete in their respective country for the chance at the only recognition that matters: becoming recognized as the GAMMA world champion.

Every two years after, GAMMA will host this world wide 16 man tournament starting in November, with the winner from the last tournament being guaranteed a spot, even if they have recently fallen on hard times. A top representative from each promotion will be involved.

And thus begins, GAMMA Worldwide.

Each organization will now select the fighters to fill their seed spots.

JAPAN - ALPHA-1 selects..

Hyougo Onodera at Heavyweight, a very physically imposing heavyweight with a good reputation as a submission expert behind him. He has a downside, in that he's shown that he can be finished by aggressive striking.

Hyougo stands at 6'0", is a 27 year old practioner of Judo, has a MMA record of 6-1 and hails from Japan.

Tadahiko Imai at Middleweight, a very physically imposing and insanely marketable middleweight with a great submission pedigree behind him. He has never been in any trouble in any of his fights, and has finished his only 4 MMA fights, 3 via submission and the other via TKO all in the first round.

Tadahiko stands a 5'10", is a 26 year old practioner of Judo, has a MMA record of 4-0 and hails from Japan.

ALPHA-1 gets two selections at Weltweight and with their first choice picks Takeki Ichikawa, who is considered one of the top fighters in the world. He's projected to be one of the winners of his tournament, and bring the gold back to ALPHA-1. Despite Takeki's reputation, he's never shown a great amount of skills, but while some might criticize his skill, Takeki has never failed to finish a fight, and has finished several fighters considered to be much better than him.

Takeki stands at 5'9", is a 23 year old Freestyle fighter, has a MMA record of 5-0 and hails from Japan.

For their second selection at Welterweight ALPHA-1 selects Ryuuichi Narita, a young Japanese prospect. Ryuuichi has a good reputation, and a great pedigree within the Japanese circles for his amateur performances. As a professional, Ryuuichi has never failed to finish a fight by submission, and is considered a good bet by most Japanese fans to carry the slack if Takeki is eliminated.

Ryuuchi stands at 5'9", is a 28 year old Shoot Wrestler, has a MMA record of 3-0 and hails from Japan.

Again, ALPHA-1 gets two selections, this time at Lightweight, and with their first choice choose Katsuma Iitsuka, considered one of the top 10 fighters in the entire world, regardless of weightclass, and the #1 at Featherweight. Some think that the weight difference between Katsuma and the 'true' lightweights may be to his disadvantage, but fans of Katsuma's would point to the fact that ALPHA-1 has pitted Katsuma against a ranking lightweight before, and he finished him. Katsuma has never gone out of the first round in an impressive streak of stoppages, finishing 3 fights with a beautiful triangle choke. Katsuma is considered a lock and a safe bet to win the entire tournament.

Katsuma stands at 5'5", is a 29 year old Shoot Wrestler, has a MMA record of 9-0 and hails from Japan.

With ALPHA-1's final selection, they choose their first non-Japanese representative for ALPHA-1, Jacob Vallis. Like his Japanese counterpart, Vallis is considered to be a lock and a safe bet to win the tournament, and is considered one of the top fighters in the entire world regardless of weight. Vallis is an extremely powerful striker for his weightclass, and has 6 knock outs to his name, with all 8 of his fights finished, including his losses. If Vallis has shown a downside, it's that he comes out to finish his opponent or be finished, and can fight with a recklessness as a result.

Vallis stands at 5'10", is a 25 year old Muay Thai fighter, has a MMA record of 8-2 and hails from Australia.

ENGLAND - BRITISH CAGE FIGHTING SELECTS..

Chad Shearer, a 20 year old Heavyweight fighter who's been fighting since the ripe age of 15. Shearer is not one to back away from a fight, and has made his reputation by fighting grown men, while he was nothing but a young boy. Shearer is already 18-2, and is hitting 6'3" at 20 years old. He's known for his great wrestling ability, the big power he has in his hands and his submission skills. The only two losses in his career are to the #1 ranked Heavyweight in the world Igor Sipatove. Once, while Shearer fought for the Russian organization SIGMA, and the second time while Shearer fought in the Australian organization, TOP. Shearer is considered a strong favorite to win the tournament, but with Sipatov involved, it seems unlikely that he'll clutch victory.

Shearer stands at 6'3", is a 18 year old Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, has a MMA record of 18-2 and hails from England.

With their second Heavyweight pick, BCF chooses Jake Sanders. A great submission fighter from somewhere in Nottage, Sanders has never failed to finish a fight by submission in 6 straight fights. A tremendous physical prescence, the 24 year old stands at 6 feet tall, and weighs in at a staggering 265lbs, cutting down from 277. Though not considered a lock for the win, fans of BCF consider Sanders a strong competitor.

Sanders stands at 6'0", is a 24 year olf Jiu-Jitsu pracitioner, has a MMA record of 6-0 and hails from England.

At Middleweight, BCF chooses the Spainard Bernardo Calvo. Calvo is considered one of the top pound for pound talents in the entire world, and is considered to be possibly the best submission artist in the entire world. Having not yet failed to finish a fight via submission in the first round in 3 years of competition, Calvo sits at a beautiful 8-0 record. He's known for his fantastic wrestling and submission skills, and is considered the #1 Middleweight in the entire world, which to most fans means that he's a lock to take the entire tournament.

Calvo stands at 6'1", is a 25 year old practicioner of Judo, has a MMA record of 8-0 and hails from Spain.

And at Welterweight, BCF selects Vikram Sithalayan to represent them. One of the older members of the tournament at 34 years of age, Sithalayan is a submission expert with a perfect 10 and 0 record, which has not been blemished with a single decision.

Sithalayan stands at 6'1", is a 34 year olf Pehlwani practioner, has a MMA record of 10-0 and hails from Pakistan.

Finally at Lightweight, BCF picks the tenacious Ronald Woo. Woo is considered the #2 most talented fighter in the Lightweight division of the tournament, and is seen as a strong lock to take the entire tournament. He's well known for his amazing Catch Wrestling abilites, and is considered to be an enormously talented finished. Having never seen a decision in his 18 fight career, Woo sits at an impressive 17-1, his only loss being at the beginning of his career. His fantasic grappling skills are seen as a huge obstacle for any competitor who meets him in the tournament. He's considered a good choice if you want to win.

Woo stands at 5'10", is a 27 year old Catch Wrestler, has a MMA record of 17-1 and hails from the Philippines.

CANADA - CLASSIC CAGE COMBAT SELECTS..

Keaton Maddox for their first Heavyweight pick. Maddox is a highly regarded young heavyweight prospect, known for his great strength and his ability to control exactly where the fight goes with it. He's never failed to finish a fight, and has never been in danger in his career. He's started to get some following in Canada due to his charisma and menacing physical presence.

Maddox stands at 6'4", is a 23 year old Submission Wrestler, has a MMA record of 5-0 and hails from Canada.

With their one and old Middleweight pick, CCC picks Fulton Carter. Carter is considered an odd choice by some spectators, due to the fact that Fulton is so inconsistent. He's been shown to be able to be beaten by other fights putting on pressure before. However, Fulton's wreckless brawling is very entertaining, and he has the ability to finish a fight with a single punch at any given time, if he can get his opponent to swing with him. An overlooked aspect of this wild brawler is that he has great ground and pound, and knows how to control where the fight goes on the ground. But, he's not considered a threat in the tournament by most.

Carter stands at 5'11", is a 25 year old Brawler, has a MMA record of 5-2 and hails from Canada.

At Welterweight, CCC has drawn two slots and with their first pick they choose Rich Robinson. Robinson is cosidered one of the more consistent fights that CCC has produced in recent times, though doesn't seem to be anything flashy. A great overall wrestler, Robinson has grappled with people that should have submitted them and has beaten them. His ability to control on the ground and lay down ground and pound has won him most fights, and has set up the majority of his submission victories.

Robinson stands at 6'1", is a 30 year old Wrestler, has a MMA record of 8-0 and hails from Canada.

With their next pick, CCC selects the 24 year old Karate stand-out, Solomon Anderson. Anderson is considered a somewhat strange pick by most, given that in his last fight he was finished by knockout. The fight that he was defeated in was considered fight of the year by most, though. Before that, Anderson had never failed to finish an opponent in the first round, showing his fantastic athleticism and elusive striking by putting down opponent after opponent. He has a very flashy style, and has the ability to put himself into a second gear if need be. Though he was recently beaten, many fans of CCC do consider Anderson to be a strong threat in the tournament.

Anderson stands at 5'11", is a 24 year old Karate specialist, has a MMA record of 5-1 and hails from Canada.

CCC again draws two selections, this time at Lightweight. With their first pick, they choose "Mr. Intensity", Bruce Steven. Though one of the older competitors in the tournament, Steven is considered a top seed by many fans of MMA across the world, and is considered the #3 Lightweight in the entire world. Steven fights just like his nickname would suggest, and can fight at the same pace he does at the start of the bell to the finish. His cardio and consistency are a thing of beauty that many fighters will never be able to match. Never to be outworked, even if Steven cannot open up an opportunity to finish his opponent, he will certainly make sure no one thinks they defeated him.

Steven stands at 5'8", is a 36 year old Submission Fighter, has a MMA record of 9-0 and hails from Canada.

With their second and final selection, CCC chooses Dustin Nguyen. Nguyen is still a relative newcomer to the sport of MMA, but he has competed at the highest levels of his chosen art, Taekwondo, having represented Canada in the Olympics only a few years ago, bringing home the Gold. Nguyen may be the most technical kicker to ever enter into the sport of MMA, and certainly may be one of the most incredible athletes the sport has ever seen as well. Fans of CCC are excited to see how the young prospect does.

Nguyen stands at 5'4", is a 24 year old Taekwondo Gold Medalist, has a MMA record of 3-0 and hails from Canada.

FIGHT LEAGUE BRAZIL SELECTS..

"Ferro Rei" Rodrigo Noeira. With a nickname that means, "Iron King" in Portuguese, Noeria is one of the most athletic Heavyweights in the division. His ability to get the fight to the ground is second to none. Did we mention that he's been the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion 3 years running? There are very few downsides to Noeira on the ground, and to top it off, he has fantastic boxing technique and can hold his own while standing. Despite not having had many fights, Noeira is considered a strong favorite by die-hard fans.

Noeira stands at 6'4", is a 26 year old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practioner, has a MMA record of 5-0 and hails from Brazil.

FLB draws two selections at Middleweight, and with their first selection, they select Thor Silva, which comes as no suprise to any fan of FLB. Silva has been on a tear at Middleweight and is a fan favorite fighter, due to his wild aggressive style of brawling. Without any care for his own well-being, Silva will come in swinging with the intention of ending the fight quickly, or ending up in a whirlwind of violence. While this doesn't make for a very long lasting career, it's certainly entertaining to watch.

Silva stands a 5'10", is a 30 year old Muay Thai specialist, has a MMA record of 7-0 and hails from Brazil.

With their second pick, FLB chooses Chico Palmares. One of their organization's mainstrays, Palmares has proven to be a consistently good fighter, though he has somewhat of a weak chin when he takes a good shot. Palmares has possibly the most interesting record in MMA. All of his victories have come by submission, while all of his losses have come via TKO.

Palmares stands at 5'11", is a 26 year old Jiu-Jitsu specialist, has a MMA record of 11-4 and hails from Brazil.

With their only pick at Welterweight, FLB chooses Hugo Uribe a great wrestler from Columbia. Though he specializes purely in Wrestling, Hugo has proven himself to be able to finish fights in certain circumstances, at times in a flashy unexpected manner.

Hugo stands at 5'9", is a 26 year old Judo fighter, has a MMA record of 7-0 and hails from Columbia.

FLB's final pick is at Lightweight and they choose Omar Campos. Campos is a talented brawler with the ability to end a fight in a single punch. He's not exactly the most iron chinned fighter, but he certainly has the ability to end any fighter's night if they're not careful.

Campos stands at 5'8", is a 24 year old Brawler, has a MMA record of 6-1 and hails from Columbia.

HLITE SELECTS..

The HLITE Heavyweight champion Suk-Ji Kwon. Though HLITE would clearly prefer to place an American Heavyweight with their first selection in the tournament, it's impossible to deny the incredible skills of Suk-Ji Kwon. A Jiu-Jitsu fighter hailing from North Korea, Kwon is considered one of the most intelligent gameplanners in all of MMA, and his conditioning and consistency match that great intelligence. He's considered a strong lock to take the tournament, so long as someone takes out Igor Siptaov before they meet.

Kwon stands at 6'1", is a 29 year old Jiu-Jitsu specialist, has a MMA record of 9-0 and hails from North Korea.

With their second choice, HLITE chooses Toby Sorkin. A high level Judoka in the USA, and one of the old Olympic level American Judokas to jump into MMA, he's a fantastic athlete with easy marketability. Overall grappling skill wise, Sorkin is considered one of the top fighters in the world, and it's near impossible to imagine someone beating him on the ground, but he has been Suk-Ji Kwon and Sorkin's meeting in HLITE is regarded as one of the most suprising submission losses of all time. Sorkin rarely fails to finish, and is rarely in over his head against great opponents.

Sorkin stands at 5'9", is a 31 year old Judoka, has a MMA record of 10-2 and hails from the USA.

At Middleweight, HLITE chooses Jessie Kakutani. A young, extremely marketable, prospect from the USA, Kakutani has all the makings to make a great overall fighter. At the moment though, most experts agree that he's going to struggle in this tournament against the more seasoned young fighters. Kakutani does have an upside in that he's never failed to finish a fight in the first round.

Kakutani stands at 6'1", is a 25 year old Muay Thai specialist, has a MMA record of 4-0 and hails from the USA.

With their only pick at Welterweight, HLITE chooses Francis Holland. With a strong control on the ground and an ease of marketability, Holland looks like someone that will be in the HLITE Middleweight division for a long time. He has good overall ground skills, and looks to be able to grow into a great young fighter. He's already highly regarded in the MMA community for his wins, but there's a lot of room for improvement in his skill.

Holland stands at 5'9", is a 26 year old Jiu-Jitsu practioner, has a MMA record of 5-0 and hails from the USA.

HLITE draws two selections at Lightweight, and with their first selection they choose Gustavo Castro. An exciting young submission fighter from the USA, Castro captured the HLITE Lightweight title right before this tournament. Castro has some great athletic prowess, coupled with great takedowns and ground control and technique. He's a strong submission fighter, and will be looking to get every fight in the tournament to the ground.

Castro stands at 5'7", is a 26 year old Submission Wrestler, has a MMA record of 6-1 and hails from the USA.

With their final selection, HLITE chooses Markus Waller. Waller is considered a sleeper choice in the Lightweight tournament by most fans of HLITE. Having never failed to finish a fight by submission in seven fights, Waller is one of the premier submission specialists in the entire world. Having taken multiple world grappling championships at his weight class, Waller is one of the best on the ground, pound for pound. He struggles at times to actually pull fighters that don't want to be on the ground to the ground, but once he gets it there, he overwhelms them with the depth of his technical knowledge, and his strong submission skills. Fans of HLITE expect Waller to do much better than his standing projects.

Waller stands at 5'6", is a 29 year old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist, has a MMA record of 7-0 and hails from the USA.

With HLITE's choices, five premier organizations have had their selections revealed to the world. The rest of the brackets will now be revealed.

Notable selections at Heavyweight

TOP selects Igor Sipatov to represent them. Considered to be the P4P best fighter in the world, and also considered to be the Godfather of Ground and Pound, Sipatov is easily considered the most dangerous invidiual on the entire planet. Having fought in the public eye for more than just the 5 years that GAMMA has been promoting their world wide organizations, Sipatov started fighting in no-holds barred, non-regulated tournaments and shows when he was young. Alleged to have an amateur record of nearly 100 fights with no losses, there are very few people that doubt the destroyer's record could possibly be that high. At 39 years old, Sipatov has 35 professional fights to his name. He has never been defeated, nor has he failed to finish one of those 35 opponents. On average, his fights last a total of 57.5 seconds, and almost universally end in a knock out victory. Fear does not begin to describe one's state of mind when choosing to step into the cage with Siptaov, one fighter said. Sipatov is considered by oddsmakers to be an easy choice to take the entire tournament for the next 4 years.

Sipatov stands at 5'8", is a 39 year old Kick Boxer, has a MMA record of 35-0 and hails from Russia.

INFINITY chooses Ade Ojukwu to represent them at Heavyweight. Ade is considered a strong lock to make it to the final four of the tournament, and has a very strong physical presence. His ground control and technique have led to a slew of submission and TKO victories on the ground. One thing's for certain, Ade has the ability to beat anyone in the world, so long as it hits the ground. The biggest upside to Ade is his age, he's only 22 years old, and is already competing on a elite level. Ade has a long ways to go, and can only mature as a fighter in future tournaments if he continues to compete at a high level.

Ojukwu stands at 6'1", is a 22 year old Freestyle fighter, has a MMA record of 8-0 and hails from Nigeria.

Notable selections at Middleweight

KADENA DE MANO FIGHTING chooses Jayson Torres to represent them at Middleweight. Having never failed to finish a fight, Torres is one of the most celebrated fighters at Middleweight so far. An overall talent, his finishes span from head kick knock outs, overwhelming his opponent to omoplata submissions. Though many would actually point out that Torres' actual talent doesn't reflect his ability to finish, there are others who would say that his killer instinct, and his ability to know when and where to throw something have attributed to his amazing highlight reel of finishes. Torres is considered a strong lock at Middleweight to make the final four, and a good choice to win the entire thing.

Torres stands at 5'11", is a 24 year old Jiu-Jitsu fighter, has a MMA record of 7-0 and hails from the Philippines.

With their Middleweight selection, INFINITY chooses the Middleweight stand-out Femi Nzeogwu. Possibly the best fighter that INFINITY has on their roster in terms of pure skill, Nzeogwu is an good all around talent with great finishing skills, much like Jayson Torres. Nzeogwu is known for his triathalon level conditioning, and his need to never stop, coming out as strong in the first round as he does in the fifth. Nzeogwu brings a skill-set that should worry any fighter, in that while he lacks significant finishing power in his strikes, his ability to time shots, much like Torres, has contributed to some incredible highlight real KOs for him.

Nzeogwu stands at 6'0", is a 24 year old Freestyle fighter, has a MMA record of 9-0 and hails from Nigeria.

Notable selections at Welterweight

With their only selection TOP chooses the #1 ranked Welterweight in the world as their pick, Ethan Burne. Burne is considered a top talent in any division, and considered the master of the armbar finish, 5 of his 11 finishes are via armbar. Much like the uncomparable Igor Sipatov, Burne has an impressive non-official record in MMA, standing at 38-0, and with a professional record of 11-0, it's not hard to see how that's a possibility. Burne's finishing ability is incredible, and his skill-set is clear for any fan of MMA to see when the fight hits the ground. Though he's not particularly well known for his stand-up skills, he does have the ability to finish there, and has in the past. A great wrestler who has never failed to finish a fight, Burne is considered a strong choice to win the entire tournament.

Burne stands at 5'9", is a 23 year old Catch Wrestler, with a MMA record of 11-0 and hails from Australia.

With their only Welterweight choice, SIGMA chooses the fighter from Greece to represent them, Zander Georgas. One of the best overall talents at Welterweight, Georgas follows the welterweight tradition of being a skilled grappler without picking up the striking credentials to match. A highly menacing and charismatic figure, it's no surprise why the Russians have put faith in the Greco-born fighter. Though relatively young in his MMA career, Georgas has shown a fantastic ability to intimidate an opponent, then use that intimidation and bullying to finish the fight. He's considered the #2 Welterweight in the entire world, just behind Ethan Burne. A strong lock to make the final four, Georgas is looking to sweep the tournament.

Georgas stands at 5'10", is a 28 year old Freestyle fighter, with a MMA record of 5-0 and hails from Greece.

With their only Welterweight choice, ISL chooses a young grappling prospect from Denmark to represent them, Peter Karlsen. Never having failed to finish a fight via a different submission, Karlsen has impressed fans of the ISL enough that during their international voting, he was chosen to represent the entire continent of Europe. It's hard to say much about Karlsen without reiterating the impressiveness of his submission wrestling, but he, like the other highly ranked Welterweight fighters is a ground specialist, and looks to finish off the top fighters in the world, and put his mark on history in MMA to become the first World Champion at Welterweight.

Karlsen stands a 5'9", is a 25 year old Jiu-Jitsu fighter, with a MMA record of 4-0 and hails from Denmark.

Notable selections at Lightweight

The final notable choice in the tournament again comes from the European promotion International Shoot League, with their only Lightweight selection, they choose the #1 Lightweight in the world, Jacey Vreman. A newly dominant figure in Europe, Vreman became their division champion in 1992 then followed that victory up, defeating the 3 top fighters that the ISL had to offer in the first round. He has never failed to go out of the first round, and has strong finishing abilities on the ground. A great wrestler with good stand-up skills, Vreman is one of the best overall talents P4P in the tournament. He's seen as an easy lock to win the Lightweight division, as there's really no-one skillwise that matches up well with him at all.

Vreman stands at 5'10", is a 25 year old Freestyle fighter, with a MMA record of 6-0 and hails from the Netherlands.

BREAKING NEWS: GAMMA

GAMMA is saddened to have to report the passing of another fighter from the 1995 tournament. This time, it directly effects the tournament at hand. On his way to the arena for the Press Conference for his match against Joon-Ho Song, Katsuma Iitsuka was involved in a car accident, which unfortunately took his life. GAMMA officials have decided to post-pone the event until ALPHA-1 can find a representative they are comfortable having in the tournament to put in Iitsuka's place.

GAMMA's thoughts are with Iitsuka's family, and will cover all funeral related costs for the Lightweight #2 Seed.
