Kawajiri and Sakurai take home the gold

In the ONE FC: Gold main event, Tatsuya Kawajiri pulled off a stunning come from behind submission victory to become the first ONE FC Featherweight Champion. Takeshi Inoue was controlling the fight with crisp boxing and good wrestling, without really looking like he was going to finish the fight. However, in the fourth round, Inoue had taken Kawajiri to the mat and was looking to advance his position, but in a rare lapse of concentration he left his arm in, and Kawajiri was able to lock in a match ending armbar at 4:26 of the fourth round, which earned him Submission of the Night honours.

In the co-main event, Yoshiyuki Nakanishi also pulled out a come from behind armbar to defeat Melvin Manhoef. The first round was surprisingly uneventful for a Manhoef fight, but the second round could be a contender for round of the year. Nakanishi rocked Manhoef in the middle of the round, Nakanishi went in for the kill but left himself open for a Manhoef counter which knocked him to the mat. Manhoef followed him to the ground, but still being a bit out of it, he was careless and Nakanishi managed to lock in an armbar at 4:37 of the second round.

In the other Championship fight of the night, Japanese legend Hayato Sakurai was victorious against young, up and comer Rustam Khabilov. Sakurai dominated the majority of the fight, with Khabilov unable to secure any of his takedown attempts and only having limited success in the stand-up. Sakurai managed to use his wrestling to control Khabilov before sinking in an arm triangle in the fourth round.

Young prospect Eddie Ng was victorious against Zorobabel Moreira, however he wasn’t impressed with his own performance. He was disappointed that he couldn’t finish Moreira, despite dominating the fight on the feet. Ng seemed uncharacteristically gun shy, however he got the job done and he can move on to another test in the near future.

Felipe Enomoto went 2-and-1 in ONE FC with a victory over highly touted Eduard Folayang. It was yet another submission victory, this time by kimura. For the 3 minutes and 27 seconds the fight lasted, Enomoto was in control. He managed to take Folayang to the ground early and took his time in securing a kimura.

In the first pre-lim of the night hometown fighter, Raymond Tiew was on the wrong end of the Knockout of the Night. Kazuhisa Watanabe caught Tiew after a minute of the second round and followed it up before the referee stepped in to save Tiew from anymore punishment.
