Mid-South Wrestling 1987:It's Time to Hook em UP

Recommended Posts

In a time where traditionally strong territories such as St. Louis and Florida and fabled promotions like the AWA and the NWA were faltering due to Vince McMahon, Jr.'s aggressive corporate raider tactics and revolutionary television and marketing strategies, Watts' Mid-South thrived and prospered. When Watts had Mid-South running on all cylinders, he was rivaled only by Jim Crockett, for having the most entertaining promotion. However, Mid South was not immune to the WWF's talent raids. By 1986, Watts had lost the Junkyard Dog (arguably Mid-South¹s biggest star) and Hacksaw Butch Reed to Titan. Still, Mid-South was the territory for me. The action was second to none and the title matches, the commentators, the angles, and the talent were all first-rate.At the start of 1987, the World Wrestling Federation was in the midst of a huge boom for itself. Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant, and Randy Savage vs. Rick Steamboat were about to bring the house down at Wrestlemania III. The National Wrestling Alliance (mainly Jim Crockett Promotions) had Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen, Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, and one tremendous tag team scene with teams like Anderson/Blanchard, the Road Warriors, the Midnight Express, and the Rock n' Roll Express.

In the southern part of the United States, especially in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas,Tennesee, Louisiana, and Mississippi, Bill Watts had the Universal Wrestling Federation. Less than a year before, Watts had taken the Mid-South wrestling territory and made an attempt to take it national. He had a solid roster with the likes of Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Ted DiBiase, "Dr. Death" Steve Williams, the Fabulous Freebirds, and others. Some younger talent was starting to flourish as well, such as Rick Steiner, Sting, Shane Douglas and "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert. Also, at the time Jim Ross and Michael Hayes were the top announcing team for the company. They had obtained a nationally syndicated TV deal, and all seemed poised for becoming a threat to the WWF and their top perch

very old school. I like old school wrestling. I am doing a MID-SOUTH WRESTLING old school dynasty/diary myself.....anyways keep up the good work and good luck with the UWL

Bravesfan,

Thanks for the post. Much appreciated. I saw your thread a few days ago and am watching it because I'm interested to see where you take things with the UWF.

Interesting story. In 1985, Vince McMahon had bought the wrestling timeslots on TBS and was airing the WWF on both USA and TBS. In the original deal, McMahon's programming on TBS was supposed to be taped at the TBS studios for airing on the network. That didn't last long as Vince just started airing WWF programming that was taped elsewhere aired on his other WWF shows. This lead to a fallout between Vince and Ted Turner. Turner retaliated by putting Watts' then Mid-South wrestling show on the station and it was a superior in-ring product and got bigger ratings than Vince's shows on TBS.

Turner had talks with Watts about bankrolling Mid-South and making it the national promotion on TBS before a behind the scenes mover and shaker named Jim Barnett steered Turner in the direction of Jim Crockett, Jr., who ran Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. Crockett's promotion had much bigger names than Watts with guys like Flair, Blanchard, Dusty, etc. So, Vince wound up selling his TBS air-time to Crockett for $1 million. In the meeting where the deal was struck, McMahon apparently turned to Crockett and said: "You'll choke on that million." Three years later Vince was proven right even though the NWA had a better wrestling product.

But, one has to wonder what might have happened if Turner had instead bankrolled Watts. Pro wrestling might be a completely different landscape than it is today. And we might still have at least two major promotions in business. (Sorry, TNA just isn't a big-time player IMO because they're no threat to WWE right now.) What might have been...

Anyway, good luck with your endeavor. I'll definitely be checking out the shows.

<p>MId-South/UWF was my 2nd favorite organization #1 being the AWA so this has me interested.</p><p>

Predictions.</p><p>

<strong>Shane Douglas</strong> vs Gary Young</p><p>

Gary Young I always liked and still a fan of the Franchise to this day</p><p> </p><p>

Savannah Jack vs <strong>Kamala w/Akbar</strong></p><p>

Jack got over pretty well but never as huge as Watts wanted</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Eddie Gilbert</strong> vs Terry Taylor</p><p>

Both were about at the same point in their career in 87 Gilbert</p><p>

maybe slightly ahead but not by much.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>The Fantastics </strong>vs John Tatum/Jack Victory</p><p>

Fantastics were always a poor mans RnR Express so trying to recapture the magic.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Steve Williams </strong>vs Big Bubba Rogers</p><p>

A push since both were "hosses" but gotta go with the hometown favorite</p><p> </p><p>

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs<strong> One Man Gang</strong></p><p>

I see Duggan getting poached by the WWF soon not so sure about One Man Gang</p><p>

So Duggan loses,Gang wins only to drop the title later on to Williams.Gang then heads North to New York</p>

Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers make their way to the ring to ZZ Tops Sharp Dressed Man. As usual as Tommy and Bobby make their way around the ring they are mobbed by female fans. The match starts out pretty evenly matched, but it didn't take long for Tatum and Victory to pull out the cheap shots. For a good 7 to 10 minuets Tatum and Victory worked on an already injured Fulton(who sustained an earlier injury to his leg by the sheepherders) by keeping him in their corner and double teaming on Fulton. It seemed that every time Fulton would get a little strength going Tatum and Victory would pull the old fake tag and double team Fulton as the refs attention was diverted by getting Rogers out of the ring for trying to save his partner, but instead this was allowing Tatum and Victory to double team an already beat up Fulton. Tommy gets the fans behind Bobby by cheering him on. Finally Bobby catches a break and gets the the tag. Tommy who freshly rested hits the ring and explodes on both Tatum and Victory. Tatum and Victory finally cut Tommy down and start to double team him. Bobby gets back in and knocks Tatum out of the ring. Meanwhile Tommy catches Victory with a missile drop kick and the Fantastic's catch a dazed Victory with the rocket launcher and get the victory.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <em>Backstage</em></p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="34128" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>We are shown Hacksaw Jim Duggan backstage in the locker room with Jim Ross. This brings out an angry Terry Taylor who gets in Gilbert's face and tells Gilbert that he is a liar and coward. Taylor grabs Gilbert and backs him into the corner of the ring, only to be blind sided by Sting and Steiner. As Sting and Steiner pummble Taylor,... Gilbert ask them to hold Taylor up. Duggan and Gang go at each other, with neither man getting the advantage. Gang gets in a couple of cheap shots and send Hacksaw out to the arena floor. While gang has the refs attention Akbar begins attacking Duggan with a chair. Duggan finaly makes it back into the ring. Duggan who know seems to be getting the best of Gang sets Gang up for his three point stance spear(Duggans signature move) but Gang pulls the ref into the spear. Duggan checks on the ref which gives the Gang enough time to attack Duggan. Meanwhile Akbar gets in the ring has a chair. Gang holds Duggan while Akbar goes to hit Duggan, but Duggan ducks and Akbar hits Gang sending him down to the mat. Duggan yells out a huge hooooooo...then knocks Akbar out of the ring. Duggan then turns around to hit an already groggy Gang with the three point stance.
