DAVE: First the East Coast, Then the World (Cornellverse '97)

Recommended Posts

State of the Company (Week 1, January 1997)

* New DAVE owner Phil Vibert made his intentions for dominance very clear when he addressed the locker room on New Year's Day. It was therefore of some great surprise that his first major decision was to hand booking control to the virtually unknown Masked Avatar. We suspect that the Masked Avatar is exactly that: a puppet under Vibert's control.

* Extreme Champion Johnny Martin is being pushed as DAVE's number one headline act. After winning the title following three title changes in August 1996, Martin has brought some much-needed stability to the main event scene. However, Vengeance is massively over with the fans through his avenging angel gimmick, and at Back in Black will seek to prove that it takes more than a friendship with the owner to justify being the face of the company.

* Unhappy with the bland persona he's been given in Canada with CGC, 21 year old Eddie Chandler is enjoying life considerably more with DAVE where he has been allowed to develop a flamboyant heelish gimmick alongside top manager Easy Emma. His next test with DAVE will be against veteran brawler Vin Tanner at Back in Black.

* NOTBPW's Larry Wood's impressive brawling skills have attracted Vibert's attention and he is the number one target acquisition for DAVE. As the tag team situation in DAVE looks especially weak, Billy Wood may be encouraged to join his younger brother in the United States.

* DAVE is officially at war with Philly Pro Power Wrestling, Rapid Pro Wrestling, and the Xtreme Federation of Wrestling as it seeks control of the East Coast. Phil Vibert has proudly stated to the media his confidence in the ability of DAVE's roster to win the East Coast Wars, but the emergence of the Hollyweird Grappling Company is going to make his task harder. The billionaire-backed HGC are already rumoured to have offered substantial contracts to a number of DAVE's top stars.

Back In Black (Monday Week 2, January 1997)

Live from Pennsylvania Park, Tri-State in front of 1855 people.

DAVE Tag Team Championship: Black Murder © vs. The Darkness Warriors

To the anger of a crowd chanting for Murderous Mikey to stop stinking up the ring, Black Murder retains the titles when Mikey pins Jay Darkness after 10:13 of dire tag team action. The rumoured freshening-up of the division cannot come quickly enough. E+

Doug Peak, the lesser-known of XFW's Peak Brothers, makes an appearance at the arena and is recognised by a tiny minority of the audience. E

JJ Coles vs. Henry Lee

Coles and Lee have great chemistry, but that doesn't prevent the audience from venting their anger at the appearance of both men on the card. Henry Lee wins a decisive victory in 6:28 by pinfall with an Asylum Buster. E

After the match, a battle-scarred Japanese monster appears in the ring and unleashes a chair-assisted piledriver onto Henry Lee. Having chased Henry Lee from the ring, he silently raises his fist to the bemusement of the crowd. D+

Arriving to the customary DAVE welcome of wolf-whistles, Easy Emma takes the microphone and hypes her client Eddie Chandler as the future of the organisation, a perhaps ambitious statement considering that the majority of the main event scene is under 30. E+

Eddie Chandler vs. Vin Tanner

Eddie Chandler has some work to do to ascend to the heights touted by his manager, but at least he isn't booed off the stage like the previous two matches. After 11:49 of decent in-ring action, Chandler wins by submission after placing Vin Tanner in a Fabulous Stretch. E+

Eric Tyler appears in the ring and mentions the name of HGC owner JK Stallings, smirking as the crowd immediately responds with their favoured chants regarding the billionaire's coprophagic tendencies. (OOC: This is a family-friendly dynasty!) Tyler then motions to the back, and a small forklift truck carying a large wooden crate trundles down the aisle. Tyler wrenches the crate open with a crowbar and holds aloft a large spool of barbed wire to the crowd's delight. "Does anybody in the back want to show JK Stallings what DAVE is all about?", he says with another smirk, and as Tyler and the forklift driver wrap the ring ropes in barbed wire, we cut backstage. D

JD Morgan, Freddie Datsun and the Wolverine are arguing in a hallway when Phil Vibert exits the adjacent bathroom shaking his hands. The three wrestlers surround the owner and demand a shot at Johnny Martin's Extreme Championship. Vibert sets up a three-way contest for later in the evening, with the winner getting a shot at the next event. D

Barbed Wire: Eric Tyler vs. Doug Peak

Still waiting for an opponent and to the displeasure of the crowd, Eric Tyler takes a chair and sits in the ring staring at the aisle. From behind, Doug Peak slides in and starts the contest with a sneak attack. In a bloody bout filled with dangerous clotheslines into the ropes, Doug Peak wins in 13:13 by pinfall following with a House of Horrors, but only after a surprise interference from Phil Vibert, who leaves his commentary position armed with a baseball bat and unleashes a brutal headshot to Eric Tyler. E+

Phil Vibert continues his assault on Eric Tyler before throwing the bloodied man over the barbed wire ropes to an exposed concrete floor. Vibert then reaches into his jacket pocket and produces a piece of paper, and asks for a microphone from ringside. "This afternoon I received a leaked press release which you will be able to read for yourselves tomorrow morning. Spoiler alert! 'Hollyweird Grappling Company are delighted to announce that we have agreed to terms with Eric Tyler yadda yadda yadda... we look forward to showing the HGC fans this wonderful talent', you get the point." Loud boos fill the arena and a vocal minority suggest that Eric Tyler's relationship with JK Stallings may be improper. "So Eric, I am delighted to announce that you are free to leave the building. Try not to bleed on the furniture on your way out." D

#1 Contenders Match: Freddie Datsun vs. JD Morgan vs. The Wolverine

The match starts in the ring but quickly turns into an arena-wide brawl, and referee Dewey Libertine struggles to keep up with the three men. All three get a decent number of attacks in, but after JD Morgan and The Wolverine work together to shut Datsun in a backstage dumpster to prevent his interference on pinfall attempts, it becomes effectively a two-man contest. The Wolverine defeats JD Morgan by pinfall in 15:49, ending a bout with a good crowd and good action. D+

DAVE Extreme Championship: Johnny Martin © vs. Vengeance

Vengenace looks to control Johnny Martin from the beginning but in a back-and-forth bout Martin's stamina proves significant. Martin defeats Vengeance cleanly by pinfall in 20:49 following a Twist on the Rocks and walks away after another successful defence of his DAVE Extreme Championship. D

Show rating: D

Post-event notes:

* Phil Vibert is said to be privately disappointed with the main event and especially with Vengeance's poor stamina. The match was overshadowed by the #1 Contenders bout and there will be a lot of expectation on The Wolverine to keep up that level of form when he competes against Johnny Martin.

* Eric Tyler's contract with HGC is believed to be a pay-per-appearance deal, but the vitriol with which DAVE's fans hold JK Stallings makes it a challenge for Tyler to justify appearing for both promotions, and so he was offered the chance to make a temporary departure following an extreme DAVE-style contest. Vibert's first choices to defeat Tyler all refused to risk injury in a barbed wire match, and it is believed that the owner is so grateful to the teenager Doug Peak for stepping in that he will reward his courage with a concerted push in the midcard.

* The silent monster who attacked Henry Lee was none other than Japanese deathmatch veteran Natsuhisa Tamura. The crowd responded very well to the segment and Natsuhisa is expected to compete at the next event.

* DAVE management are hoping that Doug Peak's arrival will facilitate the entry of his brother Eddie. With Larry and Billy Wood's negotiations all-but-finalised, a revitalised tag team division starring the brothers Peak, Wood and Darkness will hopefully reduce the negative crowd reactions seen at Back in Black.

* PPPW, RPW and XFW all have events later this month and Vibert is attempting to manage expectations, a difficult task considering his early hype. XFW have also agreed to terms with Henry Lee who will shortly be leaving the promotion. Lee's departure is seen as no great loss by the DAVE faithful.

State of the Company (Week 1, February 1997)

* Phil Vibert is said to be in a foul mood as DAVE were humbled in the East Coast Wars in January, finishing behind each of the promotions with which they are at war. XFW have been especially agressive in negotiations following the success of Uprising and time will tell whether entertainers Mayan Idol and Corporal Doom are the right fit for the hardcore organisation. Steve Flash's successful title defence against Lance Henderson at Rock This Country gave RPW the best card of the month and plenty of momentum heading into February.

* Despite a disappointing display at Back In Black, DAVE's reputation as a promotion with a positive backstage atmosphere has helped the company acquire a number of new talents. Eddie Peak has agreed to join his brother Doug and in doing so forced XFW to vacate their Blood Brothers championship, while the negotiations with the Wood brothers have finally been completed. The Woods and the Peaks are expected to compete in a tag-team match at Counter Culture. Further signings have been confirmed but Vibert has been elusive when pressed for details. Expect more information when DAVE returns to the ring next week.

* DAVE put in a strong financial performance in January despite narrowly failing to sell out Pennsylvania Park. With a number of new contracts offered and with the flexibility to expand the payroll, fans can expand to see more workers involved at Counter Culture.

* Eric Tyler began his HGC career last month with a victory over Troy Tornado. He is listed as inactive for Counter Culture, but DAVE retains the opportunity to use Tyler in some role. Perhaps Vibert will be inspired by Vengeance, currently performing in HGC under his alter-ego Ares and not suffering any ill-will from the DAVE faithful. Perhaps if the East Coast Wars keep slipping away, Tyler will be encouraged to don the mask.

* The three-way #1 contenders match at Back In Black was a rare high point in DAVE's January performance, and Vibert intends to use all three participants heavily in the upcoming show. The Wolverine will have his promised title opportunity against Johnny Martin, while Freddie Datsun is expected to seek some measure of revenge for his unceremonious dumpster dive against JD Morgan.

Upcoming events:

Counter Culture (Monday Week 2, February 1997)

DAVE Extreme Championship: Johnny Martin © vs. The Wolverine

Tag Team: The Peak Brothers vs. The Wood Brothers

Freddie Datsun vs. JD Morgan

Also expected to appear: Vengeance, Eddie Chandler, Natsuhisa Tamura, Phil Vibert's latest signing, and many more!
