Losing Face: An analysis of On The Line

by Trip0lar

We're less than 72 hours removed from PWZ's next big monthly show, On The Line - and it's definitely shaping up to be an interesting one. In every match, one or both sides have something to lose, whether it's something (relatively) minor, like their hair, or major: a mask, a title shot or their PWZ Career. I'll briefly run down the leadup to the matches on the card, and analyze what a loss could mean for the competitors in each.

For the Vacant PWZ Momentum Championship

Francis Burke vs. Demarcus Lee

History: Both were seeded in a tournament for the vacant Momentum belt. Burke seeded in second place behind former champion Pat Rigsby, and Demarcus Lee won a third place bout against Vortex.

Potential Losses: While one could argue that neither man technically has anything to lose here, the Momentum Championship is a major stepping stone for wrestlers trying to jump to the Heavyweight division, as we've seen (albeit controversially) with Pat Rigsby. Burke's the easy favourite, undefeated in PWZ so far outside of his loss to Pat Rigsby for the belt last month. Lee, on the other hand, is coming into this match as the underdog, and a loss here would surely hurt the head of steam he's built this month. The winner of this match will go on to great things in PWZ, while the loser will not be so lucky.

Career vs. Hair Match

Dumfrey Pinn vs. Surfer Dude Lucas

History: Started a feud earlier this month when Lucas interrupted a Pinn promo. Lucas snuck a pinfall on Pinn in tag action, but was unsuccessful in their singles bout the following week. Following their last match, a pair of large thugs (presumably hired by Pinn) destroyed Lucas' hitting hand. It backfired the week after when Lucas cost Pinn a match against X-Calibre.

Potential Losses: It's obvious from the stipulation. This might turn out to be one of the most important matches on the card when all is said and done. A win from the underdog Lucas is certainly possible; his spinning backfist is deadly, ending a match from nearly any position and he has a win over the veteran Lanny Williams, Pinn's former tag partner. While Lucas is injured, his arm in a cast, it may not necessarily hinder him - potentially making his dangerous backfist even more deadly: Pinn could end up on the unemployment line. Perhaps he should have thought of that before being overconfident about his chances when agreeing to the stipulation. Lucas, on the other hand, is renowned for his messy golden locks. He may not be such a hit with the ladies with a shaved head, but who knows: he might be better looking without the mop.

Mask vs. Mask Match

La Muerte Negra vs. X-Calibre

History: La Muerte Negra made his debut in January by violently assaulting X-Calibre after a gruelling tag match, tearing his mask and causing him to bleed. After La Muerte Negra cost X-Calibre a match against Sir Artie, the two met at Inception last month, with Muerte emerging victorious. After a great deal of back and forth this month, the two agreed on the stipulation in an effort to remove the other's mask (and their legacy).

Potential Losses: While little is known about La Muerte Negra (he's apparently rookie Sean 'Major' Damij if his blog posts are anything to go by) he's undefeated so far in PWZ. A loss here would not only kill the mystery surrounding his character, but potentially put his skyrocketing career on hold. X-Calibre has been under his trademark mask (in various forms) for six years, so a loss would definitely hurt him: when you spend that long defining a brand, a character, losing it is a big, big deal. He may still be the mean green springboard machine after losing the mask, but he will never be the same.

PWZ Tag Team Championship

The Australian People's Party© vs. The Strong Bads

History: A rematch from last month, where the APP won the titles from former champions, the Bads.

Potential Losses: The Tag Titles, of course! Not too much to be said here. The Strong Bads are quite possibly the most dominant team we will ever see in PWZ, and are undefeated in 2v2 matches, only losing their title last month in a three way bout when a furious Warmonger continued to attack TSB despite being eliminated. They also hold a win over the APP from last year. The APP are young, talented and eager to hold onto the belts. A successful defense here will catapult them to the big time.

Unsanctioned Match (win by pinfall/submission only, no DQ, illegal moves allowed)

Pat Rigsby's PWZ Heavyweight Title shot on the line

Pat Rigsby vs. Boo Smithson

History: In a match against Smithson earlier this month, Rigsby used his pre-PWZ finishing move, the Piledriver. The move has been banned in PWZ as it has been too dangerous, and it's use led to Rigsby being suspended for three weeks, and Boo being sidelined for most of March. Savouring the fact that he injured Smithson, Rigsby goaded Boo into an unsanctioned match where his Piledriver is legal, but on the condition that Rigsby's PWZ Heavyweight title shot is given to Boo if Boo wins.

Potential Losses: This could potentially go very wrong for Boo Smithson. He's barely recovered from his concussion/neck injury, but wants Rigsby's title shot (and perhaps a little revenge) too much to care for his own wellbeing. A serious neck injury as a result of one or more Piledrivers could spell the end of Boo's career. Rigsby stands to lose his shot at the title, but obviously is confident about his chances (or getting another shot should he lose.)

Stipulation TBA

Halloween Knight vs. Nicky Gilbert

History: A rematch from their widely lauded match from earlier this month.

Potential Losses: Without an announced stipulation, who knows? Both are ready to break into (or back into) the main event scene (Gilbert, especially - many are high on him and want him to succeed).

PWZ Heavyweight Championship

Maurice Jackson© vs. Lanny Williams

History: These two have met two times prior, the last time was in a steel cage. Lanny has been unsuccessful in both attempts to best Jackson and win his title.

Potential Losses: This very well could be Lanny's last shot at the PWZ title before retiring. It's no secret that he's well into his forties and might be losing his touch, especially after losing to rookie Surfer Dude Lucas in the rookie's debut. A loss here might lead to Williams leaving the business sooner rather than later. Jackson, however, is on top of the PWZ world, having held the title for seven months, longer than anyone else (or even everyone else combined) in PWZ history. Jackson losing the title is still a huge blow, but one that he can recover from: Jackson's still young and some have said he hasn't reached his potential yet - a scary thought.

So there you have it: hope you have tickets for this Sunday, because it's going to be huge!

Top o' the Pops baby!~

For the Vacant PWZ Momentum Championship

Francis Burke vs. Demarcus Lee

- I'm going with the non-Aussie to spice things up. Makes no sense, but then my picks always make no sense yet contain a hint of logic. Lee is the anti-Aussie that the rookies can gun for.

Career vs. Hair Match

Dumfrey Pinn vs. Surfer Dude Lucas

- I'd rather see a bald surfer than PWZ without Pinn Industries.

Mask vs. Mask Match

La Muerte Negra vs. X-Calibre

- Two reasons. The tainted demonic mask is not letting go of the foolishly named 'Maja' Damij. And I really dislike X-Cal for no reason other than his ridiculous mask. Without the mask X-Cal might flip n' flop his way to some popularity. Without the EVIL mask, LMN is just another jobber.

PWZ Tag Team Championship

The Australian People's Party© vs. The Strong Bads

- Because the StrongBads have outgrown this title. They're too awesome and too over to be the tag team of amazeballs.

Unsanctioned Match (win by pinfall/submission only, no DQ, illegal moves allowed)

Pat Rigsby's PWZ Heavyweight Title shot on the line

Pat Rigsby vs. Boo Smithson

- This storyline seems to be predicated on the piledriver. Rigsby wins with it, but his shot against the champ he can't use it and loses.

Stipulation TBA

Halloween Knight vs. Nicky Gilbert

- He's sexy n' knows it! And he's Oz not Kiwi so Gilbert gets the win here while HK just does what he always does. Steal the show and make everyone else look like a million kiwi dollars.

PWZ Heavyweight Championship

Maurice Jackson© vs. Lanny Williams

- Screw it. I know this is wrong but Bitterererererer Lanny makes so much more interesting a champ than MoJax one move so popular talks a good game but gets carried every night.
