The Re-Birth of WCW; January 1st, 2013.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/WCWLOGO.jpg

Background:

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/ShaneMcMahonAAF.jpg

On October 16th, 2009, Shane McMahon left the wrestling world. An official press release stated that the once heir to the WWE throne was to resign effective January 1st, 2010. Just a few months later, it became apparent that the new heir and heiress were Paul Levesque (Triple H) and Stephanie McMahon, as Levesque was appointed Executive Senior Adviser and given an office at WWE headquarters.

Since his resignation from WWE, Shane has gone on to become the CEO of China Broadband Inc, and has a seat on the board of directors for International Sports Management. Having distanced himself from his family and become established independently over the past three years, Shane looks to re-enter the wrestling world. This time however, as a competitor to his own father.

In a truly unprecedented move, Shane McMahon and a group of business partners negotiated a deal to buy the rights to buy the WCW brand, including it's trademarks (PPV/show names) and title lineage, however, the tape library was not included. McMahons business partners include:

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/EricBischoff2.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Hulk_Hogan.jpg

Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan.

For the past year, there has been much speculation in the internet wrestling community over Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan's roles in TNA, and if they were moving towards starting a promotion of their own. This was confirmed in early January of 2013, when the two paired with Shane in bringing WCW back from the dead. It is rumoured that Shane, Hogan and Bischoff each put 30% of their net worth into the venture; 7.5 million from Shane, 3.75 million from Bischoff and 1.5 million from Hogan.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/TedTurner.jpg

Ted Turner.

That's right. The "Mouth of the South" is getting back in the game. Ted Turner is rumoured to have matched Hogan, McMahon and Bischoff's 12.75 million, dollar for dollar, to become an equal partner, with a backend deal for Turner Broadcasting for all WCW events on TBS/TNT or any sister channels.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/VinceMcMahon15.jpg

Amidst rampant speculation over the logistics of this deal, Vince McMahon is emphatic that this is a good business move. The WWE retains the only physical remains of the former WCW in it's tape library, and sells the brand off in a multi-million dollar deal. Although it also means a rival promotion on a large network, the elder McMahon seems to want to re-ignite the spark that led to the wrestling boom of the late 90s by re-creating the Monday Night Wars. There are also rumblings that before he dies, he wants to find out who his true heir is; His son, or Triple H. He may believe he can facilitate this by pitting them against in each other in a promotional war.

Only time will tell if the revival of the one-time biggest wrestling promotion in the world will be a boom or a bust.

Promotional Info:

The new WCW is once again based out of Atlanta, Georgia. The company will have a regular touring schedule, with house shows and monthly pay-per-views. It is currently the 3rd largest promotion in the country, only narrowly behind TNA due to a big shot of kick-start momentum. A good start could propel it to 2nd largest very quickly, but a bad start could bankrupt the company before their first year is over. The promotion's style is similar to it's contemporaries in WWE and TNA, however, in true WCW style, a strong technical, lucha and cruiserweight midcard will be a staple, and in ring ability will be a much larger focal point. Women, however, will not be employed in any in-ring roles. Shane McMahon assumes the (off-screen) President role, while Eric Bischoff is head booker. Hulk Hogan will help behind the scenes in various roles, along with being an on-screen presence and occasionally a limited in ring role. WCW currently employs a policy on not poaching written talent from the WWE or TNA, however, workers under pay-per-appearance contracts may be made offers. WCW has also resurrected the Power Plant training facility. WCW's Power Plant Wrestling will exist as a child company to WCW, using Power Plant trainees in a regional promoation akin to the WWE's OVW and FCW. All titles

are currently vacant in both promotions.

Within the first month of the deal, WCW scoured the free agent world, and immediately signed a few former talents and veterans, brought in by the influence of Shane McMahon, or former WCW co-workers of Hogan and Bischoff.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Booker_T3.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/ScottSteiner2.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Chavo_Guerrero_Jr.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/JohnMorrison4.jpg

Antonio Banks, Bob Holly, Booker T, Chavo Guerrero, La Parka, Jimmy Yang, John Hennigan (Morrison), Jushin Liger, Juventud Guerrero, Mr. Aguila (Essa Rios), Psicosis, Paul London, Brian Kendrick, Rhino, Scott Steiner, Sean Morley, Shane Helms, Shannon Moore, Tajiri and Ultimo Guerrero were all signed within days of the sale.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/TonySchiavone3.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Diamond_Dallas_Page.jpg

Also added was the pair of Tony Schiavone and Diamond Dallas Page as the announce team.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Shelton_Benjamin.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Colt_Cabana2.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Kevin_Steen2.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/AlexShelley5.jpg

With a strong cast of veterans, WCW began to add top-tier indie talent (with the promise of strong pushes) and other staples of the wrestling world; Alex Shelley, Carly Colon (Carlito), Colt Cabana, Davey Richards, Harry Smith, Jay Lethal, The Briscoes, Kevin Steen, Matt Hardy, Petey Williams, Shelton Benjamin, and a cast of luchadores, high flyers and Japanese juniors such as Ultimo Dragon, Teddy Hart and The Amazing Red among others.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Ric_Flair2.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Hulk_Hogan.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/Scott_Hall266.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/kevin_nash5.jpghttp://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/BillGoldberg.jpg

Finally, the WCW hired a few former stars. Terry Funk was signed in a backstage role, however, there are rumours he wants one last retirement run with 2 or 3 matches. Scott Hall and Kevin Nash have signed to appear. Hall, although whipped into great shape recently by DDP, will not appear in an in-ring role, however Nash, while primarly a personality, could see some time in the ring. Next, Goldberg was brought in in a real-life backstage role, but will see camera time, and Ric Flair was able to be re-leased from his WWE Legends contract by buying a small ownership stake in the company, and can appear in the company in a non in-ring role for three months, however, can wrestle after that should he choose. Word is however, WCW currently has no intention for that and would like to respect his retirement match in WWE.

Week 2 of January, 2013

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/DaveMeltzer.jpg

Highlights:

- WCW sale seems to have left Shane and co. with a few million. The company better have a good start if they want to last the year. Signing bonuses alone this month are going to hit them hard.

- First WCW PPV will be Souled Out, date TBA. The company plans to do Souled Out, Superbrawl, Spring Stampede and Starrcade in that order for their first four pay-per-views. Starrcade, of course, will be their year end show, but Superbrawl will be getting lots of attention as a "big 4" PPV as well.

- Sounds like the plan for the WCW World Heavyweight Title is to hold an 8 man title tournament leading up to a title match at Souled Out.

- Hogan says he'll only be appearing in a non-wrestling role for now. Let's see how long this lasts and if he'll put anyone over should he return to the ring.

- WCW currently employs a non-poaching policy, which means they won't attempt to sign anyone coming off a written deal with TNA or WWE, unless they are not re-signed. Seems they don't want to be at war with the two companies, at least yet. Again, let's see how long this lasts.

- Booker T, Scott Steiner, and a bunch of veteran midcarders are good enough to make WCW second or third in America right off the top, but they better hope the recent acquisitions in Cabana, Strong, Steen, Richards, etc.. get over quick, because that main event scene is not sustainable.

- Speaking of the main event scene, word is WCW wants to acquire a few more top tier guys to shore up the top of their card. They have a few programs planned for the first two months, but will need some added star power after that to make sure things don't get stale.

- In a move that's recieved praise around the internet wrestling community, WCW has brought back a legitimate cruiserweight division. The division accounts for more than a third of the current roster and is stacked with talent.

- The additions of Flair, Goldberg, Hall and Nash is great in terms of star power and a link to the old WCW, but I can't see fans' attentions being held too long once the novelty wears off. The general consensus, however, is that Goldberg has a few matches left in him should he choose to get back in the ring, and if booked properly, WCW could make some big money off of him.

- WWE seems to be going with Rock/Punk, Kane/Bryan, Ziggler/Cena and Big Show/Del Rio as their main feuds this month.

- WCW is booking arenas for their first few Nitros, the inaugural show being in the last week of this month. I can't see them coming close to selling out yet, so let's see how they deal with this.

- WCW is anticipating their first wave of signings for their new Power Plant Wrestling (PPW) development territory. Seems like it'll be a mix of techincal wrestling and cruiserweights, much like it's parent company.

- Power Plant Wrestling have signed on Bob Backlund as a Road Agent, Dave Prazak as their announcer, John House on color and Jeremy Borash as the backstage interviewer.

- WCW have signed the following for the Power Plant: Argenis, Cash Money Erkan, Cedric Alexander, Corvus, Ivan Kiev, Jimmy Jacobs, Kazuchika Okada, Noam Dar, Ricochet, TJ Perkins, AR Fox, Jordan Devlin, Marty Scurll, Player Dos, Player Uno, Ross Von Erich, Ryan Taylor, Zack Sabre, Jr, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson and Adam Cole. Word is Jacobs, Okada, Ricochet, Player Dos and Uno, Matt and Nick Jackson and Adam Cole will be the first to be called up, providing they adapt to WCW's style well, most likely within the first three or four months.

I saw he was competing in NJPW in real life under the MVP moniker, but given that this is a rival promotion, the WWE probably wouldn't let him. I'll change him to Antonio Banks to keep it realistic.

Week 4 of January, 2013

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/DaveMeltzer.jpg

Highlights:

- Alex Shelley's dark match with Kenny Omega was the match of the night. Hopefully this company has big things for him because he's looking very comfortable in the WCW ring already.

- Given that Nitro was held in the South East, this should come as no surprise, but Ric Flair and the promo he cut were extremely over Monday night. The company has already rethought their usage of him and are looking to employ him in a larger role.

- Fans were a bit confused with the end to the Shelton/Steiner match. The Terry Funk interference ending seemed to come out of nowhere, but from the sounds of it, when it came down to crunch time, it was the best way to kick off an apparent Steiner/Funk feud and give Shelton a victory while keeping Steiner strong. Funk is expected to explain his reasoning for the attack next Monday.

- Early reports are that Carly Colon and Chavo Guerrero have great chemistry together, and the company has big plans for the two.

- Nitro did a .9 on TNT this past Monday, compared to Impact's 1.1 on Spike and WWE's 2.3 on USA. That's a pretty good number, and the general response is that the show was pretty good, but it remains to be seen if it's at all sustainable.

- WWE's Royal Rumble went over really well this weekend, however the ending was a little strange. The Rock retained his title against Dolph Ziggler, only to win the Royal Rumble directly afterward. It went over well with the live crowd in Seattle, but we'll see how the storyline plays out.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter

by Dave Meltzer

Week 1 of February, 2013

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/DaveMeltzer.jpg

Highlights:

- Booker T vs Kevin Steen is set in stone for Souled Out. Interesting that they're going with Kevin Steen to headline their first PPV as all signs had pointed to Booker vs Steiner before the culmination of last week's show. The smart money is on Booker to win the title, being as he was the last WCW champion, but if they're pushing the former ROH World champ this hard, maybe they'll push him the whole way.

- Although WCW faced criticism for Terry Funk appearing in ring and looking to work a match soon, it's said that Funk pushed hard to let them appear in ring one last time, and he'll be working 2 or 3 more matches before calling it a career.

- In addition to Booker T vs Kevin Steen for the WCW Title, Low Ki vs Shelton Benjamin for the WCW US Title, Jay Lethal vs John Hennigan vs Tajiri vs Ultimo Dragon for the WCW Cruiserweight Title and Chavo and Carly Colon vs Londrick for the WCW tag team titles, WCW.com has added Antonio Banks vs Rhino, Scott Steiner vs Terry Funk, Colt Cabana vs Harry Smith in a rematch of last week's Nitro and Petey Williams vs Alex Shelley (who apparently accepted Petey Williams challenge) for the WCW TV Title.

- Both Triple H and John Cena's contracts are set to expire in a couple weeks time. It seems both WCW and TNA aren't even entertaining the thought of offering either a contract, obviously. Roman Reigns' contract is also set to expire, but it is expected he will re-sign with WWE as neither WCW or TNA have offered him a contract.

- Heading into Elimination Chamber, WWE is going with Rock/Punk, Kane/Bryan, Orton/Sheamus and Ziggler/Cena as their top feuds.

-TNA has signed Amy Dumas (Lita) to be a manager.

- WCW's PPW developmental territory has crowned their first champions. Ricochet, who wrestled in Chikara, PWG and Dragon Date, won the Triple Crown Championship, TJ Perkins, formerly of PWG, TNA and ROH, won the #1 Contender's trophy, and the team of Ryan Taylor (PWG) and Ivan Kiev (a European indie worker) won the promotion's tag titles.

Cool diary. Tip, add a quick picks section to your card so it's easier for us to make predictions.

Souled Out:

Colt Cabana vs Harry Smith

Alex Shelley vs Petey Williams

Jay Lethal vs John Hennigan vs Tajiri vs Ultimo Dragon

I think you'll probably go with Hennigan, but I will never pick against Ultimo!

Scott Steiner vs Terry Funk

Expecting some kind of DQ here or something that sets up a more hardcore bout down the road.

Antonio Banks vs Rhino

Not a fan of MVP but Rhino to me always has value.

Chavo Guerrero and Carly Colon vs Londrick

Guerrero and Colon both have value obviously, but I just like either of them beyond working a solid hands in the ring.

Low Ki vs Shelton Benjamin

I like both of these guys really. Shelton just seems like a better champion to me.

Booker T vs Kevin Steen

Booker T can still go, but if you are trying to set yourself up for a good start, Steen winning the belt and cutting an epic promo is your best bet.

Week 2 of February, 2013

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/DaveMeltzer.jpg

Highlights:

- In TNA news, Madison Rayne and Gail Kim have won the vacant Knockout Tag Team Titles, while Joey Ryan and Christopher Daniels have captured the men's tag team titles.

- Nitro did another .9 last week, beating TNA in the ratings, who took a big dive from a 1.1 last week to a .8 this week, while WWE remained at a 2.3. This is big news for WCW, who, although they didn't gain any ratings points, have sustained their audience for at least one week, and for the time being, #2.

- As most people expected, Booker T took the WCW title at Souled Out. It seems WCW did this not only because Booker is probably their top draw at the moment, but to link the new WCW to the WCW of old, being as Booker was their final champion. It's expected he'll drop it to a young worker in the coming months, most likely Kevin Steen in a re-match, to give them a rub.

- Apparently the decision to put the US title on Shelton Benjamin was one of the first the new creative staff made. WCW sees him as one of their go-to guy when Booker eventually retires, and might push him to a title run as early as the end of this year.

Week 3 of February, 2013

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j19/xpaulocaustx/DaveMeltzer.jpg

Highlights:

- WCW has continued their slew of signings, inking Koji Kanemoto, Dragon Kid, CIMA and Rob Conway to their main roster. They have also signed Ken Doane, Kyle O'Reilly, Samuray del Sol, Alex Koslov and Johnny Gargano to to Power Plant Wrestling.

- Nitro did another .9 rating on Monday, for it's third week in a row. Although keep their rating steady is great news for the company, TNA came back from their big dip in the ratings last week by getting a strong 1.2 for Impact. WWE also saw a bit of a jump, getting a 2.5.

- It sounds like WCW has big plans for Roderick Strong and may get him into feud with a "big name" for Superbrawl or Spring Stampede.

-Although Booker T is getting over nicely as WCW champion, the crowd is still a bit cold towards Scott Steiner. WCW has big plans for him, as he is expected to have a title match with Booker T at Superbrawl after his win over Antonio Banks on Nitro. Being one of the big fish in a small free agent pond that he was, they had better hope gets over soon.

- Also not getting over as nicely as WCW had hoped is the feud between Colt Cabana/Roderick Strong and the team of Harry Smith and Teddy Hart. WCW isn't worried however, as they plan to give the feud time to grow.

- The Great Kahli defeated Antonio Cesaro the become the new WWE United States Champion, and Darren Young and Titus O'Neil defeated Daniel Bryan and Kane to become the new Tag Team Champions at Elimination Chamber.

I've began trying to follow this but am already struggling, i think you should definitely cut down the amount of updates you do i mean you've already posted four shows and the diary only started yesterday, give people a chance to read and get invested in the diary.

This is the only real world dynasty I am following.....

Keep it up! :D

Thanks, I'm trying to think of some cool stuff like promo vids and whatnot to keep people that usually wouldn't be invested in a real world dynasty interested.

Sorry about that, I just already had the first month or two done, so I figured I'd get a few shows up so people can see the direction. I'll post a lot slower as to not burn people out!
