GAMMA: Barbarians At The Gate

Recommended Posts

I'm back! My UFC one had a good run but got a little old so I'm back with a new GAMMA dynasty! I'm about to finish up 1999, and will be starting my dynasty from 2000 and beyond. Once 2000 rolls around, I'll share some info about how I got to the point I'm at and what you can expect!

Enjoy!

Champions:

Lightweight: Sean Morrison (2x)

The Man With No Nickname dropped his title way back at GAMMA 23 in 1998 when he faced Bradon Sugar. After an 18 month hiatus, Morrison returned to face the debuting Fiyero Lermontov at GAMMA 36. With a division that is still taking shape, Morrison earned his second title shot and beat Luke Hilton at GAMMA 39 to become the two time lightweight champion. A showdown with Lukas Melberg seems likely at this point.

Welterweight: Julio Regueiro

He may not be the flashiest fighter, but Spanish Silk knows how to get the job done when he's called upon. Boasting a 23-0 record, Julio has three straight title defenses against Rufus Stephens, Josh Aldarisio and David Webb. A jack of all trades, Julio may be on top for some time to come.

Middleweight: Stuart Strange

Stuart has earned his gold, that's for sure. Taking out the red hot Ashley Ballard at Fight Night via TKO, Strange kept the momentum going and did the same to Osmosis Benn at GAMMA 35. This led to him fighting for the title at GAMMA 40 where he claimed the belt off of Buddy Garner.

Light Heavyweight: Marlon John

The chosen one. After controversy rocked the 205 division, Marlon John began his path to gold in a historic moment. Taking part of GAMMA 31: Grand Prix, John beat John Rivero and Spencer Rubenstein in the same night to win the belt. His first defense came at GAMMA 37 when he took out William Harrison.

Heavyweight: Jeff Carlton

The man with the heavy hands, Carlton, has left a wake of bodies in his path en route to the belt. It started when he took out Tony McCall at GAMMA 25. He would go one to score a first round TKO of former champ Raul Hughes. At GAMMA 36 in a highly anticipated fight, Carlton took care of the ultra-popular, James foster.

Storylines:

-There have been some major headlines over the past two years for GAMMA as they do battle with ALPHA-1 and Classic Combat Federation. Doing their best to keep their fighters happy, GAMMA took some MAJOR hits to their roster when an exodus of big names left for OMEGA.

It all began when newly minted LHW champ, Linfield Ballard, balked on contract negotiations and left the company. His first fight in OMEGA was a title bout in which he won via a 2nd round head kick. While bridges were burned with Linefield, his younger brother, Ashley, would later re-sign and remain with GAMMA.

-Another defect to OMEGA that made headlines was Lightweight champion Brandon Sugar. Sugar, fresh off the heels of a title defense against Motoki Hojo on live TV felt that GAMMA wasn't the place for him, and went with Ballard to OMEGA. 11 months since leaving, Sugar has yet to see any action in OMEGA, but currently holds the #1 LW ranking in the world.

-Lastly, the one that really left people with a bitter taste in their mouth was the negotiations between GAMMA and everyone's favorite bad boy, Nathan Chambers. Chambers fulfilled his contract in late '98 and when entering negotiations, hit GAMMA with what were later called "crazy" demands. Chambers didn't hesitate the leave for ALPHA-1 where he has gone 4-0 and claimed the promotions WW title.

-One current fighter that has fans buzzing, for better or for worse, is James Foster. 1-2 in his past three fights, Foster has shown signs of weakness as he has been both TKO'd & KO'd in those fights. At 33 years old, the former champion is at a cross road, and needs to turn things around ASAP.

-The new breed of fighters are beginning to make their mark here in the MMA world as we hit the year 2000. Guys such as Bud Brockett, Manoel Cabral, Lamont Banner, Isiah Monroe, Bill Brown, Toby Sorkin, Joshua Hope, Rupert Dreck, Julio Correa and Kanezane Fujii are all showing us what we get to look forward to in the coming years!

GAMMA 41: Regueiro vs. Allen Announced!

Main Event: GAMMA Welterweight Championship

Julio Regueiro © (23-0) vs. David Allen (16-2)

 • A Top 5 P4P fighter, Spanish Silk returns to the cage when he takes on top contender, David Allen. Julio is coming off a submission victory over David Webb at GAMMA 33 while Allen is fresh off of back-to-back victories over Charles Stiles & Alan Kendall. Will the top game of Allen be enough to claim gold, or will Spanish Silk strike again?

Co-Main Event:

Gerson Mauricio (11-0) vs. Gladstone Lopes (14-0-1)

 • Two of the top Heavyweight imports from Fight League Brazil will clash in an epic match-up of strikers. Gerson in his two GAMMA fights has claimed two first round finishes, and would love to add another one to the list. Meeting him is The Brazilian Bomber, Lopes, who has wrecked havoc on the FLB for years and now looks to do the same in GAMMA.

Tarcisio Dantas (4-0) vs. Bruce Steven (16-8)

 • Even with a clear experience gap, this is not a fight to scoff at. Dantas is a pure killer and in his previous two GAMMA fights, took home TKO finishes over Aaron McBroom and Henry Baldwin. Submission ace, Bruce Steven, would love nothing more than to cut the hype train short and hand Dantas his first L.

Hyun-Shik Lim (12-2) vs. Ken Peters (8-1)

 • An interesting bout at 205 lbs. Lim was a hot commodity for some time in the MMA world, but was lack-luster in his GAMMA debut when he lost a decision to Christian Mountfield at GAMMA 35. Things don't get any easier for the South Korea import as he meets the super-tough Ken Peters, who would love to prove he belongs.

Prelims

Helvecio Babenco (10-3) vs. Gerardo Diaz (7-1)

Bill Brown (2-0) vs. Alceu de Castro (19-14)

Roope Kuqi (3-0) vs. Frank Sheedy (20-9)

Undercard:

Roope Kuqi def. Frank Sheedy via. TKO (3:46, Rd 1)

Bill Brown def. Alecu De Castro via. TKO (1:37, Rd 1)

Gerardo Diaz def. Helvecio Babenico via. UD (5:00, Rd 3)

------------------------------------------------------

Hyun-Shik Lim vs. Ken Peters

Rd 1) Peters came out and pushed the pace. He knows Lim is a lethal fighter when he finds his range and pace, so Ken made that it didn't happen in this round. He didn't land any major shots, but he did enough to take the round. 10-9 Peters.

Rd 2) Not keen on letting Peters dictate the pace, Lim came out and ended this one quickly in the second round. Ouch.

Hyun-Shik Lim def. Ken Peters via. TKO (0:27, Rd 2)

Tarcisco Dantas vs. Bruce Steven

Rd 1) After some light grappling, the two began to engage close to the fence. Dantas found a good groove as he didn't allow Steven to do much damage. Bruce threw out a weak jab which Dantas slipped and returned fire with a fight ending hook! Good night!

Tarcisco Dantas def. Bruce Steven via. KO (2:31, Rd 1)

Co Main Event:

Gerson Mauricio vs. Gladstone Lopes

Rd 1) The crowd was buzzing for this one! The two lethal strikers came out trading leather and everyone was enjoying it. Lopes saw his opening and lived up to his nick name of The Brazilian Bomber and ended this one early on in the first round.

Gladstone Lopes def. Gerson Mauricio via. TKO (1:47, Rd 1)

Main Event: GAMMA Welterweight Title

Julio Regueiro © vs. David Allen

Rd 1) Right off the bat, Allen scored a quick takedown. With Julio working off of his back, landing elbows to the scalp, Allen wanted nothing to do with the vicious guard game of the champ. Eventually getting up, Allen couldn't prevent a takedown later on from Julio. Silk locked on a nasty armbar, but Allen survived with seconds left. 10-9 Regueiro

Rd 2) Again, Spanish Silk controlled this one. He took it to the ground and worked his slick BJJ game. He had yet another armbar, but the sweat allowed Allen to slip out of it. Silk ended the round in back mount. 10-9 Regueiro

Rd 3) Allen was ragged in this round. Julio danced and made him work, then decided to wall & stall him. When he saw David was done, he went in for the standing guillotine finish.

Julio Reguerio def. David Allen via. Submission To Retain The GAMMA Welterweight Title (1:54, Rd 3)

GAMMA ANNOUNCES TWO UPCOMING EVENTS!

GAMMA 42: John vs. Sorkin!

Main Event: GAMMA LHW Title

Marlon John © (14-0) vs. Toby Sorkin (7-0)

-Marlon John is pretty damn good. Looking for his second successful title defense, the champ will need to bring his A-game as he meets the Judoka Who'll Choke Ya, Toby Sorkin. The out-spoken Sorkin has quickly climbed the ranks in GAMMA with a 4-0 record in the company. Two perfect records and a hunk of gold on the line? Yeah, this will get good!

Co-Main Event:

Truck Gleeson (22-5-1) vs. Motoki Hojo (17-4)

-With the Lightweight title picture murky as ever, these two elite 155'ers know what a win could do for their career. Both men are coming off of losses and have zero interest of turning it into a losing streak. The hard hitting Gleeson wants to solidify his spot while the Japan native, Hojo, is looking to redeem his GAMMA debut.

Leon Banks (32-10) vs. Elzo Alves Mora (13-0)

-Two heavy hitting, mean men will clash in the cage! The rugged Banks is a man that isn't afraid to back down from anyone, which is good cause neither is Elzo Mora! The former FLB Heavyweight champion, Mora, debuted at GAMMA 37 and is ready to get one step closer to gold.

Tora Mizwar (19-7) vs. Ashley Ballard (11-1)

-Debuting in GAMMA way back in 1998, Tora "Bull" Mizwar was less than impressive as he lost to Sutton Ripley. Now, in early 2000, he wants to wash away that memory with a big win over Ballard. Once just a step away from the title, Ballard would love to bounce back after a loss to Stuart Strange. A perenial threat at Middleweight, Ballard is not to be taken lightly.

Undercard:

Tiago da Paixo (12-5) vs. Sam Hoynes (2-0)

Taufik Wijaya (45-19-1) vs. Cesar Granda (6-1)

Billy Russell (2-0) vs. Woody Firestein (10-4)

GAMMA 42: Carlton vs. Satinho

Main Event: GAMMA Heavyweight Title

Jeff Carlton © (35-7) vs. Murilo Satinho (11-0)

-In a division where the title changes hands seemingly every other day, this match up means a lot. Coming off of the dismantleing of James Foster, Carlton is riding high with plenty of momentum. However, during GAMMA's raid of the FLB, Murilo Satinho was discovered. The 23-year old is a vicious finisher, and would love to claim gold in his GAMMA debut.

Co Main Event:

Thais Antonio Taffarel (18-2) vs. Dexter Darling (18-3-1)

-A big title eliminator in the middleweight division! Making his debut, Taffarel is a dangerous striker that will gladly stand and exchange with anybody in the division. Luckily, Dexter Darling is as tough as they get and isn't afraid to get into a tussle.

Jamie Hewitt (10-4) vs. HM Menzel (11-4)

-The former XCC Lightweight champion will make his way into GAMMA as he clashes with the well respected HM Menzel! Hewitt is a top-notch wrestler that can dictate the fight from the ground, however Menzel too is a legit wrestler with an ever-evolving striking game.

Kanezane Fujii (4-0) vs. Sylvester Collins (4-0)

-Fujii is starting to emerge as a star in the heavyweight division. In the sink-or-swim world of MMA, Fujii has been swimming rather well lately and would love nothing more than to knock off The Big Show, Sylvester Collins. The former pro football star knows a win over Fujii means all the hype behind The Great Japanese Hope would then belong to him.

Undercard:

Waly da Chuna (12-5) vs. Christopher Drew (2-0)

Kensuke Tanaka (3-0) vs. Dana Delaney (8-3)

Manoel Cabral (5-0) vs. Urlington Rogers (9-4)
