Epic Battlebowl and having Dustin win the title was great. I always remember Jim Ross doing commentary on a Dustin Rhodes and Steve Austin match and he says in the ring these two men are the future of wrestling. Sadly WCW didn't see it at the time. It does make it more special with Dusty passing today. He will truly be missed, but he he will live on in many incarnations on this board, because he was a Legend.

A Loose Opening

Before the opening theme and pyro goes off, we go to some backstage footage where we hear

playing. Into the shot comes “The Loose Cannon” Brian Pillman, who is wearing a yellow sleeveless shirt. Brian explains that it’s been awhile since he was on Nitro, but every time he comes with a revelation, it becomes the hottest event in wrestling. Pillman says that ever since Starrcade, he was sitting at home watching as his New World Order became just more members of the Kings of Wrestling. He says that friends have always used him as a stepping stone, turning on him when they felt they had gotten somewhere – everyone from Steve Austin to Hulk Hogan to his nWo; and with some extra time on his hands, Brian really thought about that. He says that he’s always had one friend – and that’s the fans who cheer him on and rally when he’s down. Brian says that he got where he is today because he always had more heart than brains – and it is that heart that they have all tried to break. “I may have a few screws loose, but there is a spirit inside me that you can never shatter, can never splinter, can never destroy! That force in wrestling that used to be Hulkamania used to surge through my veins, but that’s old! That’s passé! Hulkamania died when Hollywood Hogan was born. What WCW and the fans need is a new leader! A new paragon of virtues! And that’s why Scott Hall, Syxx, and the rest of the Kings of Wrestling, and the rest of WCW need to watch out, because what are they gonna do when the ‘Loose Cannon’ and his Pillmania runs wild on you?!” Pillman rips off his t-shirt, which we can now read clearly as saying “Pillmania” in black lettering, as we fade out to the opening of Monday Nitro!

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/wcw-95/pillmaniashirt.jpg

Notes: Pillman has always had trouble keeping his “Loose Cannon” gimmick over with the WCW crowd. So now, even though he is still playing it as crazy, his new gimmick is Avenger – and it immediately rates an A*.

WCW Magazine presents: Battlebowl in Pictures

Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay are heard narrating still frames of last night’s Battlebowl pay-per-view. They highlight the random pairings before cutting to the important parts of the battle royal, namely just the final three, where we see Pillman attack Scott Hall and then Dustin Rhodes eliminate Vader. We then see the image of Sting with the crow on his arm, an eerie sight that closed the show.

Notes: Mike Tenay was starting to get stale, so we changed him to a Sportscaster (Realistic) gimmick, rating a B.

The New Champion

WCW Commissioner Magnum TA is in the ring when we come back from that, and he has the WCW World Heavyweight championship on a pedestal. Tony comments on how the belt is finally cleaned up from that vile graffiti that the KoW had tagged it with, and the cleaning has made the gold look even more prestigious than ever before. Magnum says that when he announced that the title would be up for grabs in Battlebowl, even he had no idea that things would have gone the way that they did – but he could not be happier for how it went. He says that despite everything standing against him, only one man dared stand up to the odds, and it looked just like 1985 all over again when this man’s father performed in much the same way to win this same championship. With no further ado, he brings out the new World Championship Wrestling Heavyweight champion of the World – “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes! Dustin comes out and accepts Magnum’s handshake, and the commissioner officially straps the championship belt around Rhodes’s waist. Dustin says that he can’t help but feel a little emotional over all of this, from battling the Horsemen for half a year and then winning this, he can’t think of any better way to start the new year. TA makes the announcement that the number one contender is “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and that he will be Dustin’s first title defense next month in the Meadowlands Arena on February 25th at SuperBrawl! Dustin cuts Magnum off, and he says that with all due respect to Magnum and the WCW championship committee, he knows that they are planning to hold the thirtieth anniversary of the Clash of the Champions on February 11th, and it’s going to be right in Dustin’s own backyard of Austin, Texas, at the Mike A. Myers Stadium – and there is no way that he isn’t going to defend his newly won championship right there! Magnum tells Rhodes that that is a rash decision, one that the committee cannot accommodate because there are no contenders lined up. But Rhodes says that there is a rule in wrestling that if someone defeats the champion, they become the new number one contender; that is why he is hereby issuing a challenge to anyone in WCW or the KoW to come out here on Nitro every week in the main event, and if they can defeat him by pinfall, count out, submission, referee stopping the match, disqualification, however – then they will be the man who gets the first World championship match at the Clash of the Champions! “The Natural” says that anyone back there can come out here right now and try to make history! It doesn’t take long before someone answers, as the music of the Kings of Wrestling blares over the arena and “The Outsider” Scott Hall appears! Hall says that if that “little goofball” hadn’t gotten in his way, it would be him in that ring right now taking the title from “old man Magnum” so he tells Dustin “don’t sing it, bring it” – and he’ll meet him in the ring in the main event this evening! What a huge match made, and some huge stipulations are on it!

Notes: Magnum enjoyed the freedom of being off-script and performed well.

Rating: A

Finlay w/Baron Tomas vs. Rick Martel

This was a pretty quick match, and it highlighted that despite not being a huge name, Finlay is a force to be reckoned with here in WCW. He and Martel put on a good matchup, though it does suffer from the crowd still being invested in what happened previously. The Earl Clayton tries to interject himself but it backfires as he accidentally trips up Finlay instead of Rick, leading to a quick rollup and victory for the cagey Martel.

Martel is not finished though, as he gets the microphone from Gary and calls out Chris Jericho. Along with The Warlord at his side, Jericho emerges from the back, asking “Montel” what he wants. Rick says that this thing has gone on long enough, and with the Clash of the Champions around the corner, he wants Jericho in the ring! Chris says that he isn’t all that interested in facing off with “some geezer who has to get back to the nursing home” and tells Rick that this is why he has a bodyguard now – and if Rick can somehow manage to get past The Warlord at the Clash, then maybe, just maybe, he’ll see him in the ring again.

Match Time: 6:52

Notes: Martel has changed to a Clean Cut gimmick, rating an A*. Rick then worked the crowd well, using the freedom to improvise to his advantage.

Crowned Kings

We head to a special camera setup to see Roddy Piper, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, The Giant, and WCW Executive V.P. Eric Bischoff riding into town in their private limousine. They are talking about people in WCW, all except Giant who remains stoic in his demeanor. They discuss the new champion, Dustin, saying that he is just keeping the belt warm for the Kings to take right back; they touch on Dusty, who nobody knows the true allegiances of yet; they laugh at Lex Luger, who seems to think he can carry all of WCW on his back in this fight; and they joke that that’s the kind of attitude that Hogan would take if he wasn’t so afraid to get back in the arena after what they did to him.

Notes: Savage and Piper had some masterful improvised interactions, and Bischoff performed well with the freedom to be off-script. But while Piper came across well and Savage’s performance was good, Eric was found a little underwhelming.

Rating: B+

Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Ultimo Dragon

Cruiserweight action is up next, but unfortunately we forgot to tell Mike Tenay. Fast paced, hard hitting wrestling is the name of the game for these two, but Tony and Jesse find themselves talking more about other things because they can’t really call this style as well. Thankfully for their sakes, this one is pretty short, as Juventud Guerrera hits ringside and causes a distraction while Rey is in the middle of a springboard flipping hurricanrana, which gives Ultimo a chance to drill him with a powerbomb and stack Rey up for the victory. Guerrera looks incredibly smug from the outside.

Match Time: 7:36

Rating: C-

Two Very Large, Very Angry Men

Backstage, “Mean” Gene is standing by with The Road Warriors! After the crowd’s roar dies down, Hawk and Animal take some time to talk about the Four Horsemen, particularly Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. This promo time was kept a little short, but the intent was crystal clear: they intend on smashing the Horsemen into glue.

Rating: B-

JPL vs. Steve Skyfire

This one is basically just a showcase for JPL. Skyfire is a youngster who some would proclaim is “easy money” and may have a future in WCW if the chips were to fall his way, but this is definitely not his night. JPL makes short work of him and finishes him with the Pedigree.

“Cut the music” says Rick Rude, however. He comes out onto the stage and tells JPL that there was no limit to the heights they could have gotten to together. Instead, JPL decided that he wanted to do things his way, with the fans chirping in his ear. Rude tells JPL that if he wants to disrespect Rude, he should expect disrespect right back, and tells JPL to get out here and face off like a man! Levesque leaves the ring and starts walking up the aisle, but that’s when two men jump out of the crowd and pound on him from behind, slamming JPL into the barricade! While choking him against the railing, we see the men start talking up the girls behind the barrier, as Rude introduces everyone to his new protégés:

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/wcw-95/scottsteele.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/wcw-95/sextonimpact.jpg

Scott Steele and Sexton Impact, The Ladykillers!

Match Time: 5:12

Notes: Steve’s gimmick of Generic Jobber debuted with a B+. Rude didn’t do well improvising, almost messing up the names of his new team. Sexton’s gimmick is a gimmicky Ladies Man, rating a B, and Steel’s turn (last year he was a face) went pretty well. On Worldwide we made him a gimmicky Suave, rating A*.

Rating: C- / C+

Big Contenders

“Mean” Gene came down to the ring during commercial break, and he introduces his guest at this time to be “The Total Package” Lex Luger! Luger says that obviously he is a little disappointed that he is not out here being presented the World Heavyweight title, but the most important thing about Battlebowl’s aftermath is that the Kings of Wrestling no longer have control of the title! Lex wishes Dustin the best of luck in the future of his title reign, but warns him that if he crosses paths with “The Total Package” then his reign will come to an abrupt halt! But rather than Luger’s theme closing the segment, Randy Savage’s music interrupts, and “The Macho Man” makes his way down to the ring with Woman at his side. Savage tells Lex that he’s dreaming if he thinks anybody is taking the title before he gets to Rhodes, he’s crazier than Savage is! Randy says that if Lex knows what’s good for him, he will stay out of the KoW’s way in the future, or else he’ll get the beating of a lifetime; Luger responds that the KoW can try, but as long as there’s still breath in his body, there’s no way they can destroy WCW! The segment ends with Savage backing up the ramp, warning Lex to leave them alone, as Luger poses in the ring, telling them to give him all they’ve got!

Notes: Luger improvised well, but Savage did not, letting his emotions get a little too worked up and stumbling over his words slightly.

Welcome Home?

We head back to the dressing room of the Kings of Wrestling, to see the main people huddled around a phone. Roddy Piper, Eric Bischoff, Nick Bockwinkel, Harley Race, and Woman are in the foreground, while Vader and Scott Hall are seen roughing up Devon King. The phone is finally answered, and we hear the unmistakable voice of Dusty Rhodes! The message that Piper sends is clear: he wants to know where Dusty stands, with them or against them. Rhodes says that the only answer he can give them right now is that aside from taking the title back, he wants them to leave Dustin alone. Hall quips “Who does he think he is, Pillman?” before laughing. Piper says he’s getting tired of this runaround; he and Eric will make it so that we all get answers. They tell Dusty that he needs to show up next week, live on Nitro. Rhodes agrees, but says he’s still got a lot of things to think about until then. After they hang up, Bischoff tells Roddy, Harley, and Nick that he has a plan.

Notes: Piper came across well, really showing his leadership qualities.

Later Tonight!

With the first hour of Nitro over, we have a big pyro display around the stage as we begin hour two. Tony and Jesse briefly talk about what we saw in the past hour, and tell fans that they need to stay tuned for the main event tonight, as Scott Hall faces off against the new World champion, Dustin Rhodes.

Notes: Tony improvised well.

Diamonds in the Rough

Mike Tenay is backstage alongside Diamond Dallas Page, Kimberly at his side. Tenay asks Page about his tag team match tonight, to which DDP replies that he may not be all about teaming up with Meng – given that’s the man who took Page’s US title – however if it means getting his hands on “that scum” Jarrett and Orndorff, then he will swallow his pride and do so. He does, however, tell Kim that as dangerous as the three men in the ring are, he doesn’t want her out there with him tonight. She puts up some complaint, but agrees in the end.

Rating: C

Circling the Roundtable

As Tenay is throwing us back to the arena, he hears a commotion going on near him. Mike and the cameraman quietly follow the sound of the Ruthless Roundtable to a slightly ajar dressing room door, where Lord Steven Regal is giving his men a proper tongue lashing! Regal seems to especially be blaming Finlay, who tries to defend himself but gets cut off every time. Clayton even seems to be blaming Finlay for his loss earlier this evening, but Regal does the most talking about it – saying that if things don’t change around here, all three of them could end up being sent back to the Motherland in a barrel! Tomas asks “What did I do?” before Regal notices the camera and slams the door shut, calling him a “bloody wanker”. Mike then sends us out to the ring for some cruiserweight action!

Rating: E+

WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Dean Malenko vs. Shane Helms

Even without Tenay on commentary, Tony and Jesse did fine here by only calling a few big moves as they went along. For the most part this was a full-on Malenko squash match, as he stretched the young Helms within a few inches of his life, before applying the Cloverleaf for a submission victory.

After the match is when things got more interesting, as Dean was quickly confronted by Alex Wright. The young German got in the champion’s face and demanded a title shot, but Malenko was unable to agree before being attacked from behind by Harlem Heat! The three men lay a beating on Dean, but help quickly comes in the form of Ron Simmons – or it would if he was not blasted by a chair from Johnny B. Badd on his way to the ring! Badd had hid along the barricade and waited for Ron to get near! The beatdown continues until an unexpected helper arrived: Ricky Steamboat! “The Dragon” hit the ring with chops blazing across the chests of Badd’s men, and he was able to rally Ron and Dean into chasing their assailants away! Ricky holds their arms in the air as the crowd cheers them on!

Match Time: 4:47

Notes: Ricky was getting a little stale as a family man, so we changed his gimmick to a wholesome Gentleman. It rated a perfect 100, A*! Go Steamboat!

Rating: D+ / C+

Canadian Leftovers

Tony Schiavone says that we have some unusual footage to air that was captured on a fan’s handheld camera last Saturday in Canada. It shows Steve Austin at a Totally Canadian Tavern (you can tell because everyone is wearing flannel and there’s a moose head on the wall) drinking some beer. He makes a face and asks the bartender if he has anything that’s not piss water, and that’s when things start to get ugly as his words are overheard by Owen Hart! The Canadian-born and bred Hart seems to have taken offense, and he gets in Austin’s face about it! It quickly becomes a shoving match, and when Austin breaks a beer bottle on the counter, that’s when other wrestlers get involved. Eddy Guerrero and the Twilight Express are seen holding Owen back, while Cactus Jack and the Steiner Brothers are disarming and pulling Austin out of the bar. Owen is heard yelling “This isn’t over, Austin! Your beer sucks! Molson is the only way to go!”

Meanwhile at the Glue Factory

Jesse Ventura is standing by at the top of the aisle and he welcomes his guests at this time, his personal friends and multi-time champions of this great sport, “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair and “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson! They come out with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan right behind them, and Jesse wastes no time in inquiring about the scuffle that the Horsemen had at Battlebowl last night with “those musclebound meatheads” Hawk and Animal, the Road Warriors. The crowd cheer at the mention of the two, but Arn calms them down in a hurry with his words. He starts out by saying that obviously, the more things change, the more they stay the same. He talks about how the Road Warriors have been thorns in the Horsemen’s rear ends for years, and they just keep coming back no matter what they do to them – almost as if the duo are too dumb to stop banging their heads against that wall. Bobby interjects that brains always defeat brawn in the end, and the only brain those two boneheads ever had left them behind, threw them in the trash along with that dummy he carried around for them up north! Wow, can you believe that Bobby actually referenced Rocco? Me either! Arn closes by saying that the Road Warriors have chased him and beaten him to the brink before, but here he still stands. “The Nature Boy” steps to the microphone now, and he says that muscles mean nothing when you only know how to use those; he has muscles, Arn has muscles, all of them have muscles – but they also are the best in the world, the elite, the upper echelon! Ric warns Hawk and Animal that if they want to try and beat the Horsemen into glue, that’s gonna be pretty hard when they are on their backs screaming because the Horsemen twisted their limbs into silly putty! With a loud “Woooo!” Flair closes, and the three walk away. Jesse then sends us backstage “to a much more inferior interview” being conducted by “Mean” Gene.

Notes: Jesse was superb here, the crowd in the palm of his hand. Arn improvised well, especially with Bobby’s help behind him.

Rating: B-

A United Front

Gene scoffs at Jesse, but wastes no time in introducing his guests at this time, surprising allies in Ron Simmons, Dean Malenko, and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat! Ricky does most of the talking here, saying that for too long, he has seen on WCW television these two men trying to fight off a group of insurgents, of thugs! And each week their numbers grow, and each week these two men have a new foe to deal with. “Enough was enough!” Ricky exclaims, telling Ron and Dean that their struggle is not in vain; that “The Dragon” is here to answer their call to arms, and put a stop to a potential Kings of Wrestling situation before it gets too far out of hand! When Gene asks for clarification on that statement, Ricky says that the KoW are a group of thugs, beating down members of the WCW roster and feeling like they can get away with it. He says that since they have superior numbers, the KoW are tough to push aside. But this is four men, who can be seen eye to eye in mortal combat. Steamboat says that more numbers may mean more firepower in most fights, no man or men have the amount of firepower as a dragon – and he will help these two men get past their foes no matter what! Ron and Dean are thankful to have the help, and it’s all handshakes and smiles for one another as Gene sends us to our first of two big main event level matches!

Notes: Dean performed poorly next to his more accomplished partners, but Ricky came across very well.

Rating: C

Diamond Dallas Page and Meng vs. Jeff Jarrett and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff w/Woman and Harley Race

Meng wants Orndorff in this one, that is for sure. The US champion charges the aisle when “Mr. Wonderful” walks down toward the ring, and the only way he doesn’t get his hands on him is that Paul hops the railing and runs through the crowd to get away from him! Once this becomes a standard tag team match, Jarrett and Orndorff use that wild presence to their advantage, keeping Dallas in the ring as much as possible with all of their veteran trickery. Jesse blames Meng for the breakup of one of the best teams in years, while Tony says that it was the way Paul was treating the man that made him become this wild man. Jesse fires back that while he has no love lost for the KoW, he knew that Tony would blame Paul for everything without knowing the whole story; Ventura saying that he spoke to Orndorff and found out that the team was at its breaking point for months because Paul couldn’t stand to travel with someone who was always barefoot and had such smelly feet. “Oh, stop!” is all Tony can muster to retort. The match, as it is, is good, until Meng gets too riled up on the apron. He charges into the ring, clamping the Tongan Deathgrip on both Orndorff and Page! He finally shoves Dallas away, concentrating his full force on “Mr. Wonderful”, but as Mark Curtis struggles with the two illegal men in the ring, California Kip sneaks to ringside and hits Page in the ribs with a steel chair! Tony notes that Dallas could have internal injuries as he coughs up blood, and when Jarrett puts him in an abdominal stretch, Curtis sees the blood and stops the match, awarding it to Orndorff and Jarrett.

As Page gets helped out of the ring and before we go to our final commercial break, Eric Bischoff comes out to the announcer’s booth and puts on a headset, and he officially announces that the contract has been dated: “Mr. Wonderful” will take on Meng for the WCW United States Heavyweight championship at the Clash of the Champions special on February 11th! He tells everyone to mark their calendar, because that will be the date that the Kings of Wrestling take the US title!

Match Time: 9:36

Rating: B / C+

“The Natural” Dustin Rhodes vs. “The Outsider” Scott Hall w/Syxx

We may not have known this was our main event at the top of the program, but the crowd are fully behind it now that it is in front of them. Jesse notes that Hall does have a legitimate gripe, as he was only thrown out of the Battlebowl thanks to the interference and running wild of “Pillmania”. Ventura says that he already has a t-shirt on order as soon as WCW start making them, and says they he knows will be selling out as soon as they hit store shelves. “You could buy one for your wife for Valentine’s Day, Tony! It’ll have to be a better gift than you already had in mind!” Syxx is of course a huge thorn in the side of Dustin here, but just as he finally slams Syxx’s head into the barricade and gets rid of him, that’s when Randy Savage rushes down the ramp and attacks! Hall had Tommy Young’s attention during all of that, of course. Savage hangs out at ringside to provide a distraction, as Tony speculates that Savage wants Hall to win here so that he can soften Dustin up at the Clash, before “The Macho Man” gets his title shot at SuperBrawl. Hall does a good job of it here, planting the World’s champion with an avalanche belly-to-back suplex that nearly scores a three count, but not so as Rhodes gets his shoulder up at the last split second! Hall goes for the Outsider’s Edge as Savage applauds from ringside, getting on the ring apron and telling him to “finish it yeah!” But that’s when Brian Pillman charges down the aisle! He pulls Randy’s foot, causing him to hit his face on the ring apron, and that moment of distraction is enough for Dustin to get his bearings and backdrop Hall! Dustin starts hitting Bionic Elbows to Scott’s forehead as Pillman punches Syxx on the outside. Syxx tries to escape into the ring, but Rhodes is right there to hit him with an elbow as well, before drilling Syxx’s head into Hall’s with a double noggin knocker! Dustin hits the ropes behind a dazed duo, and he hits them both with a dual running bulldog! He throws Hall on top of Syxx so that both men’s shoulders are down and covers both of them, and Tommy Young counts the three! Dustin’s music plays briefly, but before long “American Made” takes over, as the new World Heavyweight champion and the new paragon of Pillmania are in the ring together, and the Kings of Wrestling are on the floor! Tony Schiavone couldn’t be any more excited as we close this episode of WCW Monday Nitro!

Is it Seth Skyfire or Steve Skyfire? I'm so confused! :p

The Canadian tavern scene was great.

Steve, lol. In the real future he would become EZ Money, but for now he's just one of the parade of enhancement talents I've brought in for a few months. And yeah, I loved writing that :)

I was confused because of this portion.

I loved EZ Money/Jason Jett. It's nice to see that you're keeping this up for so long without losing steam.

Dude, sorry I'm late on BattleBowl but that was amazing. Everyone else has already praised it to hell, but I must say I could totally have seen that play out in WCW - and the utilization of the buzz in the beginning of Hogan's music was perfect to build suspense. It was even better that it ended up not being Hogan and served as a reminder to me that this is not real life after I'd been basically entranced by the whole show :D

On the Mean Gene subject, he's also quite creepy with Woman in '96 when she's with the Horsemen, although she flirts with him back - it's actually pretty weird now that I think about it :p

As for Nitro - I have no idea where you're going with Pillman to be honest but I'm really intrigued as to how Dustin is going to topple all of these figures looming around him. Great start for his title reign though.

Also wasn't Edge married to Val's sister IRL? That's a brilliant connection for a tag team, haha

Option 7: Tony Schiavone’s WCW moment of the week!

Option 8: Mike Tenay’s International Report!

Option 9: A gift from the WCW Catalog!

Option 1: SuperBrawl Control Center!

The main event is set, for now, as “Macho Man” Randy Savage receives his World Heavyweight title match against the new champion, “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes! SuperBrawl is a few weeks away, and there will be a Clash of the Champions event between now and then – but that is scheduled to be Dustin’s first title defense. Make sure that you plan on viewing SuperBrawl VI!

Option 2: Announced for this week’s WCW Monday Nitro!

WCW World champion Dustin Rhodes has laid out another open challenge for a contender to step forward and defeat him in order to get a title match at the Clash of the Champions. What is Eric Bischoff’s plan regarding Dusty Rhodes? Also, the Four Horsemen will be in action as Arn Anderson takes on Road Warrior Animal, and the Steiner Brothers will defend the World Tag Team championships!

Option 3: What the world ISN’T watching!

Another less-than-stellar performance from the WWF, but they’re trying hard this time! They gave away Bret Hart defeating the Kokina Maximus, and then Vinnie Vegas and his little buddy defeated Tonto and the face-painted fruitcup in the main event. Our World and World Tag Team champions will be in action on Nitro, while their champion wasn’t even on the show!

Option 4: Last weekend’s WCW Disney/MGM taping results!

WCW Pro: Chris Candido d. Art Barr to retain the TV title; Devon King d. Sgt. Buddy Parker; The Red, White, and Bruise d. Lance Diamond and Steve Skyfire; The Oddballs d. Erin O’Grady and Bobby Walker; California Kip d. Robert Gibson.

Craig Pittman after Pittman was distracted by Disco Inferno’s dancing; Barry Windham d. Lance Diamond; Syxx d. Meng by count out when Meng chased after Paul Orndorff; with Chris Jericho on commentary, Randy Savage d. Rick Martel; Savage and Woman were interviewed and told Dustin to keep the title warm!

WCW Worldwide: The panel was Tony Schiavone, Gene Okerlund, Ted DiBiase, and Kimberly Page. Marty Jannetty d. Lance Diamond, Bubba Rogers d. Hysteria, a confrontation between Surge/The Flying Spyder and the Dungeon of Doom; Steve Armstrong d. Shane Helms; The Ladykillers d. Bobby Walker and Erin O’Grady; fan footage shows the Heavenly Bodies attacking Bobby Eaton until Stan Lane made the save; Ultimo Dragon d. Biff Wellington; Rick Martel d. Tracy Smothers.

Option 5: Mean Gene’s backstage pass!

Hello everyone, “Mean” Gene Okerlund here with your backstage pass! Of all people, Owen Hart and Juventud Guerrera were overheard talking backstage at Battlebowl, about a love of fine art. At the end of Battlebowl, a speech was given, and Dustin Rhodes, Scott Steiner, and Lex Luger were complimented for good performances. Dustin was said to be very happy, while the other two seemed pleased to be singled out in a positive light. WCW has finalized a new contract with J-Sports, which will keep them on the air in Japan in a Pay-Per-View capacity. Backstage at Monday Nitro, Smash brought in a lot of alcohol, lifting the spirits of the guys in the back; remember kids, don’t drink and wrestle! On Saturday Night, Tammy Lynn and the Badd Girl have formed a very strong loyalty over their shared love of motorbikes. I don’t like to brag about it, but I can drive a heck of a scooter! *Ahem* Also, Syxx nearly got into a fight with Teddy Long over a prank that Syxx pulled by damaging Long’s rental car. Harley Race was said to have fined Waltman over the ordeal, who didn’t seem all that phased by it. Dusty Rhodes has signed a new contract with WCW, and my sources have said a major name in the WWF will be jumping ship!

Option 6: The Monday Night War Neilson ratings!

Another big night for Monday Nitro, drawing a 7.83 rating compared to a paltry 4.37 for Raw.

Option 7: Tony Schiavone’s match of the week!

No match has been more important this past week than the Battlebowl. We have had a lot of battle royals in World Championship Wrestling, but never has one been held for bigger stakes! We congratulate “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes for bringing the World Heavyweight title back out of the clutches of the Kings of Wrestling and become the first man to hold the World’s title after his father was also a champion!

Option 8: Mike Tenay’s International Report!

Some huge happenings coming from both New and All Japan this week, as in NJPW, two longtime villains are going to start getting cheers as The Great Sasuke and The Great Kabuki have seen the light. The same goes for Jun Akiyama in AJPW, those should all be very interesting turns of events!

Option 9: A special gift from the WCW Catalog!

Have you ever wanted to create your own World Championship Wrestling experience? Now you can! Take part in the WCW Fantasy Booking Experience, beginning from the start of 1996, by enclosing your name and address along with what you would change about our little world!

I gotta start remembering that I can post this along with Nitro more often, it really clears out my work space! :p

So yes, as long as that dropbox link works out, that is a direct link to download the saved game of WCW: War of the Thrones, beginning at January 1996, before the first Nitro of the year and as such before Dustin won the World title. Enjoy, everyone! Note that this does feature people who are "set to turn" but are al of them really turning or not?!? *Mwahaha*

Also, thanks to RKO, Warhawk, and Jaysin for the quick comments. I fixed the Steve Skyfire thing now. As for Edge and Val, I didn't want to go what I felt was the "easy" path of having E&C, so I figured Sexton and Steele would be a damn good team!

WCW Monday Nitro - January 22nd, 1996

I know this is incredible turnaround time between shows for me, but I was very inspired to write this one, and you'll probably find out why as you read it. I will see about having the Hotline up today, but I didn't book through the rest of the week yet so it may be a few days for that. But otherwise, on with the show...

Outlaws Can Dream Too?

No time for last week as we head straight into the ring this week. Eric Bischoff is there, and he wastes no words by calling out Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes comes down to ringside, and Eric says that he is not now, nor has he ever been a very patient man. And with that in mind, he’s tired of having Dusty come out here, week after week, parading around that he was one of the founding fathers of the Kings of Wrestling, while supporting a man who is number one on their hitlist right now, the man who unfortunately holds the title right now, Dustin Rhodes. Eric says that with that in mind, he’s made an executive decision: tonight, live on Monday Nitro, Dusty Rhodes will answer Dustin’s open challenge, and if Dusty wins, then he wins the World title match at the Clash of the Champions! Tony and Jesse are immediately going into hype mode, as Dusty rubs his chin in obvious thought…

“Macho Man” Randy Savage w/Woman vs. Erin O’Grady

Just a dominating performance from Savage on this one, as he systematically dissects O’Grady. He doesn’t take his time much here, “not being paid by the hour” as Ventura says. Savage drills Erin with the flying elbow to close this short match.

“Hot Rod” Roddy Piper then joins his partner-in-crime in the ring, saying that this was yet another person who the KoW could keep out of their faces. “Ol’ RP” is the man who put Hogan and Hulkamania out of everyone’s misery, and he made Sting hide his face from everyone and made him want to hide from the Kings of Wrestling. Savage takes the microphone and says that Dustin Rhodes is running scared, trying to give away the World title before he has to face off with “The Macho Man” at SuperBrawl. He tells Dustin that he shouldn’t be trying to fight, he should be praying; praying that Savage takes some mercy on his mortal soul if he faces off with him for the World Heavyweight title!

Steve Armstrong vs. Alex Porteau…?

This match has just barely started getting off its feet when Steve Austin interjects. He hits the ring and drills both men with the Stunner, causing the match to get thrown out.

Austin starts calling for a microphone, but he doesn’t get one until the point that Bobby “The Brain” Heenan interrupts from the top of the aisle. Heenan tells Austin that he has heard the word backstage that Steve is looking for Owen, but he needs to just calm down. Bobby says that opinions are just opinions, and Austin needs to learn that not everybody likes his backwater, Texas beer! Austin starts looking even more upset, and he heads up the aisle after Bobby – until Owen Hart strikes from the darkness! The Horseman lays boots into Austin, before driving him into the railing! Owen then smashes Steve’s face into the Nitro set, as security start descending upon the chaotic scene and forcing Owen and Bobby to go backstage! Austin seems to be refusing medical help, but head of security Doug Dillinger can be heard telling him to get out of here and cool it off.

Will Manage for Food?

Before commercial break, we see a special advertisement. There’s a sign hung in an Italian restaurant window for “Management Wanted” and out the door is shoved Jimmy Hart! Jimmy appears to have been trying to get a job there, but they didn’t like his ideas to eliminate their existing menu in favor of beans and a potato. Hart leaves the scene shaking his head, saying that it’s back to the drawing board.

WCW United States Heavyweight championship: Meng vs. 2 Cold Scorpio w/Dawn Marie

Tony puts this over as a huge title defense for Meng, who continually gets thrown out of sorts by Scorpio’s very random offense. Scorpio does a good job of hitting and running, frustrating the wild champion, before confusing him by having Dawn jump onto the ring apron to distract him. Shockingly, Meng’s wild demeanor calms down when Dusty Rhodes joins him at ringside, slapping Dawn on the butt! Dusty tells Meng “finish it, daddy!” and he immediately catches Scorpio out of mid-air with the Tongan Deathgrip! Scorpio goes cold on the mat, and this one is over.

“Mean” Gene catches up with Rhodes on his way up the aisle, asking him what this means. Dusty says that he couldn’t let his “favorite bodyguard” out to dry like that when someone was trying to mess with him. Dusty gives Meng the advice to “let the wild man out, but keep your head, and you’ll keep that title a long time!” Gene asks Dusty about tonight in the main event, and Rhodes shakes his head. He tells Gene that he doesn’t like the situation, but just here in the Carolinas where he built a lot of his legend, “maybe this ol’ worn out cowboy has one sunset left in his bones if ya wheeel.”

Ladykillers on the Prowl + The Ladykillers w/Rick Rude vs. Biff Wellington and Sgt. Buddy Parker

We now go to special footage that has Jesse Ventura all excited – because he was in it. We find out it’s basically a music video montage, set to “Simply Ravishing”, which shows Rick Rude training up Scott Steele and Sexton Impact, his new Ladykillers. Rude is heard telling them that “Once you get them down, that’s when you can just have your way with them. No matter how much they kick or scream, just keep going until they submit.” Scott asks what hold Rude is talking about, but Rick is confused – he meant women. Another piece of advice is “When you have full control of the head, you control the entire body, and that’s when you can do whatever you want.” Sexton asks if that is why Rick can always perform such great headlocks, but Rude again is confused, saying that he meant his “downstairs Ravishing delight”! We then see the two at a club trying to pick up women in the background, as Rude talks to Jesse Ventura. “The Body” asks Rick if he has his boys ring ready, but Rude says that there were way more pressing matters for him to teach them about. He says that the two should be coming back with a woman on each arm any second now – and that’s the first step toward in-ring dominance. “All about confidence in yourself, right?” asks Jesse, and Rude agrees. He says that this is what JPL turned down, all his years of experience in both fields, and that is why Sexton and Steele are going to show everyone – JPL is the first man to feel their wrath, but he will in no way be the last.

After that video is finished, we head back to Florence, where the Ladykillers are in a match. Biff and Buddy do what they can, but this is definitely just a showcase match, as Rude’s team tag in and out with ease. When one isn’t in the ring, Rude is busy instructing him to go talk to this or that woman in the audience. The Ladykillers finally pick up the victory when Sexton nails what Jesse says is called “Deep Impact” which is a lifting DDT, followed by a big splash by Steele. Impact picks up the easy pinfall after that. Rude tells the camera that JPL and all of the sexy ladies need to watch out, because they’re going to put them all on their backs!

Notes: Rick Rude enjoyed the freedom to improvise with Jesse and performed well.

Syxx w/Woman & Scott Hall vs. Cactus Jack

With Scott Hall watching his buddy’s back at ringside, this one looks a lot more like a handicap match than a singles affair; but as Jesse says, Cactus may just be crazy enough to like those odds. Syxx holds his own, however, making liberal use of his speed advantage over Jack. Anytime Cactus can mount an offense, his wild brawling gets used against him when Syxx either cheats or uses a precise spinning kick to put the odds right back in his own favor. Cactus ducks one kick and runs the ropes, coming back with a spinning neckbreaker that surprises Syxx! Jack begins rallying the crowd, but that’s when he gets spraypainted in the eyes by Scott Hall! The bell is immediately called for, and this one goes to Cactus by disqualification.

The “fun” isn’t over though, as Cactus moves around the ring blinded, swinging at blurs that must look like Hall or Syxx. The two play around with Jack before attacking, Hall laughing at Cactus as Syxx looks to embarrass him by jumping against Cactus’s face in the corner. “BUT HE’S AMERICAN MADE!!” From out of seemingly nowhere rushes “The Loose Cannon” Brian Pillman and he leaps into the ring with an Air Pillman clothesline to Syxx! Brian is fired up as he rips his “Pillmania” shirt off, and he throws it at Hall as he leaves the ringside area! Scott and Woman help Syxx toward the back as Brian and Cactus shake hands in the ring.

Devon King w/Harley Race vs. “Hardwork” Bobby Walker

Harley doesn’t even look interested here, seeming as if he only accompanied Devon down to the ring to yell at him for doing the wrong things every time. Race barks orders as King does what he can to follow them. Despite a snafu where Walker very nearly gets a rollup cradle victory, but King kicks out. Devon then gets his eyes solely on business, and he finishes this match with a second turnbuckle diving headbutt.

KoW “B-feuds”

Jeff Jarrett and California Kip cackle to themselves as “Mean” Gene Okerlund talks about how heinous their attack was last week on Diamond Dallas Page, causing Page to have to miss this week of WCW Nitro. Jarrett and Kip say that Page is garbage, a nothing when compared to the Kings of Wrestling. “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff is on hand for this interview as well, and he says that finally justice was done, and he will be bringing the United States title to the KoW at the Clash of Champions, and cannot wait to show why “Wonderful” was the first word in “Wonderful Destruction Crew” when he defeats “that clueless savage” Meng. Orndorff calls the troops, and the three walk off. Gene takes a moment to talk about calling the WCW Hotline, your place for news regarding your favorite superstars. This week on “Mean Gene’s Backstage Pass” you’ll find out about if Ric Flair stays with WCW, and how many more men are leaping off the Connecticut Titantic! Remember kids, get your parent’s permission before calling.

WCW World Tag Team championships: The Steiner Brothers vs. The Heavenly Bodies w/Theodore R. Long

The crowd may not have been all about this matchup when Prichard and Del Ray were announced as the challengers, but that all changed once the bell sounded and the Bodies began taking over on Rick and Scott! These four men put on a tag team wrestling clinic, their obvious chemistries and tag team experiences helping to form this into an amazing match. Rick gets picked apart by the beautiful offense that Tom and Jimmy display, along with a cheap shot here or there thanks to Long on the outside, who definitely wants to bring his boys some gold home. Numerous double team moves are utilized, but Scott keeps the fans rallied to cheer his older brother on. A misstep from Tom gives Steiner an opening, and Rick goes right through that open door by throwing Prichard with an exploder suplex! The Bodies almost get away with swarming Scott while Mark Curtis is looking the other way (Long’s distraction, yet again) but the Twilight Express come down to ringside and even the odds! Eaton and Taylor pull Long off the apron and carry him away from ringside, and without their manager to help them call the shots, Tom and Jimmy’s game plan falls apart. Rick and Scott rally into the ring and connect with stereo overhead belly to belly suplexes and then Steinerlines, before Del Ray gets placed on Rick’s shoulders and drilled with the Steiner Bulldog! Scott makes the cover, and Rick holds Prichard away to retain the titles in a hard fought contest.

Notes: I actually changed it last week sometime, but both Steiners have changed to legitimate “All-American” gimmicks. Rick scored an A and Scott an A*.

A Conflicted Champion

Tony and Jesse talk about how the door of the World Heavyweight champion Dustin Rhodes slammed shut as soon as the main event was announced earlier tonight. We now have a cameraman in his room, and Dustin is sitting on the bench in the dressing room with his head down. Tony says that Dustin has refused to talk to anyone tonight, but stay tuned fans because he will be appearing in our main event tonight!

Road Warrior Animal w/Hawk vs. “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson w/Ric Flair & Bobby Heenan

This one stems from last week’s altercation and words from Battlebowl and Nitro, as two forces meet in the ring here. Hawk and Ric Flair accompany their friends and partners to ringside, and with Bobby on Anderson’s side as well, they constantly serve as frustration for the Road Warriors here. This one plays out as you would probably suspect, with Animal throwing “Double A” around like a ragdoll until the point that the outside men get involved, where Anderson starts taking the advantage. He works the Animal over, until finally luck strikes and a whip into the corner causes Animal to fall backward, hitting Arn in the forehead with the back of Animal’s head! Flair tries to get involved, but Hawk throws him into the ring before following him in! This starts to look like a tag team match for a few minutes, until Hawk and Flair go back out the other side of the ring, and Hawk chases Ric backstage! From there, Animal catches Anderson with a vicious powerslam and picks up the victory.

I’ve Got One More Silver Dollar…

“The Natural” Dustin Rhodes still looks awash with emotion as he enters the ring for this huge main event. Dusty Rhodes awaits him in the ring, and commentary wonder just what will happen now that father and son are finally one-on-one inside the squared circle. Before the bell can shound, “Rockhouse” blares over the arena, and out of the back struts the Kings of Wrestling. Roddy and Randy lead the march, with Scott Hall, Vader, and The Giant behind them, along with Harley and Woman in tow. Dustin and Dusty look around as the ring fills up with bodies, the two being circled – and almost as if by reaction, father and son go not nose to nose – but back to back! The two motion for them to bring it on! Tony screams that it looks like Dusty has made his decision as he nails Piper with a Bionic Elbow right to the forehead, as the World champion starts throwing punches at everyone who gets close enough! The crowd are in awe, chanting “Dream! Dream! Dream!” as the Rhodes family are reunited for real in the center of the ring! But at a certain point, heart only gets you so far in a five on two situation; and especially when two of those are Vader and The Giant.

But the troops start filing out of the back! “The Total Package” Lex Luger and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat charge down the ramp, along with The Road Warriors and Meng! They hit the ring and start fighting back against the KoW, but the forces are still too much…

WHO THE HELL INVITED THE FOUR HORSEMEN?!?

Ric Flair and Arn Anderson hit the ring, and they start attacking the Kings of Wrestling!!! The KoW are sent scattering now with this many people pushing them back, and WCW’s troops have won the day! Flair and Anderson leave the ring, pointing back toward the ring at their oldest adversary in a respectful move. Dustin, Hawk, Animal, Meng, Lex, and Ricky remain in the ring, and Dusty Rhodes takes a microphone. He addresses the audience, saying that when he helped to start the Kings of Wrestling, he did it for the good of WCW – but in the end, all it was for was the good of people like Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Eric Bischoff, and Hulk Hogan. He wanted Dustin to join them, but Dustin saw through the web of lies and deceit that the other men kept feeding out… and he apologizes to everyone in WCW, the KoW, and especially to his family, his blood, his son Dustin, for helping to inflict that cancer onto World Championship Wrestling; and with that, he gives Dustin a hug, and presents him with the World Heavyweight championship! He talks about how proud he is of his son for winning the greatest prize in the galaxy, and how Dustin has gone above and beyond and proven that “The American Dream” is real! Dusty says that “The Outlaw” is gone, and all that remains is “The American Dream” baby! He also says that another friend who isn’t in the building tonight, had called him not long ago, and he had not given him an answer yet, because Dusty didn’t know yet if it was time. So consider this the answer to Magnum TA; that yes, it is time for “The Dream” to move aside for the new big boys of professional wrestling, and he will make sure that people like Eric Bischoff cannot hold down anyone else, by taking off his ol’ dusted up cowboy boots and officially joining the WCW Championship Committee! Dusty says that there’s a new dream in town, and it’s in the hearts of men like Dustin, Lex, Meng, Pillman, Cactus, and Austin; and with that, he symbolically removes his cowboy hat and lays it on the mat. The rest of the men in the ring, some of them his old friends and some of them his new friends, all hug and applaud Dusty, and as the show goes off the air, the camera zooms in on the cowboy hat that raised a billion dreams.

Notes: Dusty worked the crowd well, using improvisation to his advantage, but Hawk and Meng underperformed.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/wcw-95/logo2.jpg

Through the course of this show, I changed Dusty’s gimmick from “jealous” to a wholesome inspirational leader. He then turned face (during the interview with Gene) and it was a complete success. His gimmick rating ended up at a B. I did kind of fantasy write some of the last segment (could only have so many people run down the ramp at once, so the save was just Lex, Flair, and Arn, but then everyone mentioned was on screen in the next segment.) But now, on to real life matters.

I dedicate this show to “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. I’ve talked a lot about Dusty to friends and my woman here as of late, and here is a summary of what I’ve had to say. My first introduction to him may have been the polka dots in the WWF and his ridiculous commentary in WCW, but no matter what he was doing, seeing him on screen, he was “my Dusty” to everyone. That’s what you call a crowd connection, and wrestling will be lucky if they EVER get someone who can do that ever again. Not even people like Hogan, Flair, Austin, Rock, Cena, or Bryan can compare in that regard to Dusty Rhodes. And it is to the level that even as many other of the wrestlers of my youth have passed on, none have had an impact on my heart like “The American Dream” has. What I do here on the GDS is basically fan fiction, written as a fan with hindsight of what I know should work and what shouldn’t work, and I use a lot of the wrestlers who have long retired or passed on, and if they’re in the WWF side of the game, I have no problem in lampooning some of them, even guys like the Warrior who passed recently. Dusty is different though. I had intended on dragging out his decision of “family vs. business” until SuperBrawl, where he would have turned face to join with Dustin as he did here, before riding him into the commentary table for Saturday Night. But now, I can’t do that. I do not know if I can write shows here and putting down “Dusty says” this or “Dusty does” that, without feeling that twinge in the heart. So while I am keeping Dusty around in the game (with a road agent push) I am effectively writing him out with this show, with the only other time I plan to ever use him on screen again being for Slamboree in a few months as he joins the Hall of Fame. The memory of the man just means too much to me, and I cannot do it any better justice than that.

Maybe I’m just getting soft in my “old” age. Or maybe it’s just what losing a man who I grew up idolizing means to me. “R.I.P. Dusty” doesn’t even begin to describe it for me; but it’s the best thing I can say.

Here’s a fun fact that I learned thanks to wikipedia, to close this note on; Dusty said in his “Hard Times” promo that there were only two bad people. One was John Wayne, and he’s dead, and the other was Dusty. The two died on the same day, June 11th.

Thanks to his masked gimmick, I have always associated Dusty with “Midnight Rider”, almost moreso than his more popular “Common Man Boogie”, and so I’ve been listening to it as I wrote this piece. And so, here we have one of the songs I will probably never listen to again without a little bit of a tear in my eye.

That was a great send-off for the Dream. It sounds like his passing hit you about as hard as Randy Savage's hit me. I don't know if I'd have been able to write for Savage in the immediate aftermath of his death either. As for Dusty, if that story was originally leading up to him commentating on Saturday Night, transitioning him into a backstage role isn't exactly going to screw up any important plans.

The Ladykillers look like a pretty amusing act so far. Another funny segment from this past Nitro was Jimmy Hart trying and failing to land a gig at a restaurant. Poor Mouth. :D

WCW Hotline: January 1996, Week 4

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/wcw-95/hotline.jpg

WCW Hotline

4th Week of January 1996

Option 1: SuperBrawl Control Center!

Option 2: Announced for WCW Monday Nitro!

Option 3: What the world ISN’T watching!

Option 4: WCW Disney/MGM taping results!

Option 5: Mean Gene’s backstage pass!

Option 6: The Monday Night War Neilson ratings!

Option 7: Tony Schiavone’s WCW moment of the week!

Option 8: Mike Tenay’s International Report!

Option 9: A gift from the WCW Catalog!

Option 1: SuperBrawl Control Center!

This just in, fans! Just because they were a helping hand on Nitro, doesn’t mean anything is over between the Horsemen and Road Warriors! The ink is still wet on the contract to see Hawk and Animal do battle against Ric Flair and Arn Anderson at SuperBrawl VI! The Meadowlands Arena may have just recently had their name changed to the Continental Airlines Arena, but they may need to rebuild the whole place once these four square off inside its walls!

Option 2: Announced for this week’s WCW Monday Nitro!

After last week’s emotional ending, one must wonder what will happen this week on Nitro! How will the Kings of Wrestling retaliate upon World champion Dustin Rhodes? One thing we know is that Dustin will be in the arena to open the show, looking for another challenger who wants to try and get a title match in Austin, Texas at the Clash of the Champions! Also, rumor has it that there will be a very special guest on hand to open the show for a few words that you won’t want to miss! For all the best action on Monday nights, tune into WCW Nitro!

Option 3: What the world ISN’T watching!

Just because the show starts with a bang, as the Burger King gets his crown shoved where the sun doesn’t shine in a brawl with Bam Bam Bigelow, it certainly ends with a whimper as you sit through a night full of Scotty Flamingo and Madusa Micelli matches, before the main events of “Mean” Mark defeating Bret and the Samoan Sumo squishing the face painted fruitcup into putty. Instead of bothering with that, why not just watch Nitro?

Option 4: Last weekend’s WCW Disney/MGM taping results!

WCW Pro: Barry Windham d. Steve Skyfire; The Oddballs d. Biff Wellington & Bobby Walker; The Warlord d. Sgt. Buddy Parker; Chris Jericho says Warlord will decimate Rick Snore-tel; Biohazard d. Erin O’Grady; The Flying Spyder chases Biohazard away before he can attack Erin any further; Psychosis d. Dean Malenko by countout when Alex Wright distracted Dean (Malenko retains the Cruiserweight title); Tony Schiavone, Gene Okerlund, Mike Tenay, and Sonny Onoo talk about Nitro; Johnny B. Badd d. Marty Jannetty; Ron Simmons and Ricky Steamboat run Badd and Wright away to close the show.

WCW Saturday Night: The Heavenly Bodies attack the Twilight Express, weakening them for their matches tonight; Eddy Guerrero d. Terry Taylor; The Giant d. Bobby Walker; Bubba Rogers d. Erin O’Grady; Col. Parker hypes his Stud Stable; Harlem Heat d. the Rock ‘n Roll Express; Johnny B. Badd, Harlem Heat, and Alex Wright laugh off Steamboat, Simmons, and Malenko, challenging them to a six-man tag at the Clash; a video documents the surge of “Pillmania”; Randy Savage d. Bobby Eaton; Savage and Roddy Piper talk about Hulk Hogan until Barry Windham chases them away to close the show!

WCW Worldwide: This week’s panel was Tony Schiavone, Gene Okerlund, Tammy Lynn, and Woman. They discussed Nitro, the building feud between Randy Savage and Dustin Rhodes, and Barry Windham interrupting Roddy Piper. The Armstrong Brothers d. Biff Wellington & Erin O’Grady to retain the US Tag Team titles; The Red, White, and Bruise d. Shane Helms & Steve Skyfire; The Flying Spyder & Surge d. Arkane & The Boulder; Chris Candido d. Tracy Smothers to retain the TV title; Ricky Steamboat d. Devon King in a longer, more hard-fought match than one would have expected.

Option 5: Mean Gene’s backstage pass!

Huge news, fans; THREE stars of the WWF are putting their names on the dotted line to make the jump to World Championship Wrestling! These two big athletes are no doubt looking forward to getting away from their former employer as soon as possible and coming to our little “land of milk and honey” here! Also, Ric Flair has indeed signed a brand new contract keeping him with World Championship Wrestling for a few more years.

Option 6: The Monday Night War Neilson ratings!

The show that some have dubbed “WCW Dusty Nitro” drew a 7.91 rating on TNT; meanwhile, Raw’s completely unemotional show drew a 4.49 on USA.

Option 7: Tony Schiavone’s moment of the week!

The ending of this past week’s Monday Nitro has to be considered the most emotional scene most fans will have ever witnessed! The stepping down of “The Dream” did not leave a dry eye in the house, and how fitting that it was at the side of his son, World Heavyweight champion “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes.

Option 8: Mike Tenay’s International Report!

Four impressive names have joined the ranks of NJPW’s next tour this week, those being Tetsuhiro Kuroda, Koko Kitahara, Masaaki Mochizuki, and Jado! Jado surprised many by signing with NJPW, leaving M-Pro behind on the same week that Taka Michinoku left them for WAR.

Option 9: A special gift from the WCW Catalog!

Feeling a rush of Pillmania? Then order your very own yellow-and-black “Pillmania” t-shirt! 10% off if you press 0 now!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for all the favorable words about the last Nitro, and I do feel like I should clarify something. It's something that both Pack and Smasher asked me about right after I posted this show, if that means I will never use Dusty Rhodes in a diary again. I can see where that comes from, and I would be curious of the same thing. The answer is that yes, I'm sure if I do another diary in the future that features Dusty, I will probably use him in it; as with all things, time heals those wounds. But it also has to do with my portrayal of Dusty throughout this game, using his not-often-seen heel side. After all of that, writing him off-screen just felt like the best thing to do, when I know that in the near future I will have some troubles using him.

In better news, has anyone made a game based on War of the Thrones yet? I'd love to hear what people are intending to do with it now that you all have it! :)

I've downloaded it but haven't had time to play around with it too much yet. I think it could be fun to try and help the WWF reclaim their throne--though obviously it wouldn't be quite the same battling against an AI-controlled WCW! :D

  • 4 weeks later...

WCW Monday Nitro - January 28th, 1996

So yeah, it's been a few weeks. I have reasons for why it took me so long to get back to writing, but I'm not going to make excuses about it. I will just give a small apology for being so lazy, and on with the show! Hopefully it makes up for the delay.

“What is HE Doing Here?!”

Nitro starts cold, no opening video or pyrotecnics, and those are the exact words out of the mouth of Tony Schiavone, as a man stands in the center of the ring.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/wcw-95/bambambigelow.jpg

Bam Bam Bigelow has a microphone, and he says that if you turn the channel to USA Network, you will see him in a backstage brawl with Jerry Lawler – he adds that later in the evening if you check back, you may hear them say that Bigelow suffered an injury, or they might just say that he is suspended indefinitely; but neither is really the truth. He says that this has been coming a long time now, and that's how he has finally made the smart business move and jumped to World Championship Wrestling, to where the big boys play! Bigelow runs down his time in the company, saying that he was promised the world on a silver platter, he was even recently targeting the World champion with the intention of having a match against Lawler at the Royal Rumble next week. But instead, now “The Beast from the East” is right here in WCW, a place with a REAL World Heavyweight championship, a place where a man can be a man and not a cartoon character, and to Hell with the WWF and the people running it!

Bigelow moves on, saying that he left the WWF and a guaranteed title shot to come and do one thing: challenge Dustin Rhodes for the real World Heavyweight title, and that's what he's going to do right now! “The Natural” comes down to the ring, and he says that his open challenge is still open tonight – so if Bam Bam wants to meet him in the middle of this ring tonight, he's on! But before they can shake on the deal, the music of Johnny B. Badd hits and Badd walks out to the top of the aisle along with his Badd Girl, “Das Wunderkind” Alex Wright, and Harlem Heat following him. Badd has his own microphone and he decries this situation, saying that there is no way “this neanderthal” should be allowed to walk into WCW and get a chance at the World title before he or any of his men get a chance at it, adding that the two of them need to learn that their place in WCW should be behind all of them! Johnny says that Bigelow should've stayed where he was in that clown show up north, because no way will he be able to hang with the big boys of WCW! Bigelow is furious and ready to leave the ring, but Rhodes stops him. Dustin says that all Johnny ever had to do was walk down to the ring – so if Badd thinks he has a chance, then find a partner and he will take them on in a tag team match tonight! Badd says that he and Alex will dance all over them and then take home the gold at the Clash! Dustin and Bigelow share an uneasy alliance, built solely around a few words that Badd said, but can they work together as well as Johnny and Alex? What a huge tag team main event that was just set up!

Notes: Bam Bam debuted the gimmick of a brute Badass, which rated A*. His tirade was well-received, he really improvised well.

Rating: C / B-

Show Open

The ring is cleared out of wrestlers while the Nitro opening video and pyro finally plays (roughly ten minutes into the show) and then we go to the commentary booth to see Tony Schiavone, Jesse “The Body” Ventura, and “Mean” Gene Okerlund. Tony calls that an explosive opening to the show, way more explosive than you can find anywhere else tonight on television! Gene agrees, but says that it doesn't stop there; he has an exclusive that says later tonight, “Total Package” Lex Luger will be looking to the skies to try and find Sting, who we haven't seen since he emerged at the end of Battlebowl! Ventura says that he will be interested to see that, and adds that he also has an exclusive! Jesse says that he was told personally by Bobby “The Brain” Heenan that the Four Horsemen will have something to say to the Road Warriors tonight, and it could have ramifications for SuperBrawl. Tony says that speaking of the Horsemen, we have one in action right now, and this is a match that could be shown on pay-per-view anywhere in the world, but here in WCW you can get it right here live on Nitro!

Notes: Jesse improvised masterfully, interacting with the crowd. Gene really improvised well also.

“Latino Heat” Eddy Guerrero w/Bobby Heenan vs. Steve Austin

Commentary talk about how seriously Steve Austin and Owen Hart are taking their feud over the national pride of their given brews, and Austin clearly had some of his favorite before coming out for this match. Steve is on fire here, but “Latino Heat” burns bright as well. Jesse says that there's a good reason why Guerrero held the TV title for so long, and he shows it by holding his own with one of WCW's premier athletes. Austin is resiliant to the end; he rolls away from a top rope dive, but Guerrero rolls through and back to his feet. But when Eddy comes back around, he gets nailed with the Stunner! Austin goes for the pin, but that's when Owen Hart slides into the ring and smashes him with a chair!

Randy Anderson immediately calls for the disqualification, as Hart lays in the boots to Austin. Guerrero recovers and joins in with his partner, and as they lay into Austin, Tony suddenly says that there is a big commotion going on backstage! Austin is being held in Eddy's Gory Special as Hart slaps him, just as we get a camera backstage – to see Hawk and Animal being beaten on by Ric Flair and Arn Anderson! Security pours into both situations as Jesse Ventura crows that this was a great plan by the Horsemen, dividing and conquering to make sure that neither group could get any backup! Tony mentions that it will be different at the Clash of the Champions, when the Road Warriors will team with Steve Austin to take on three of the Four Horsemen in six-man tag team action, but Jesse says that after the Horsemen are done with them, they may not make it to the Clash, let alone Superbrawl.

Disco Inferno vs. “The Blackjack” Barry Windham

Disco takes over a few times in this match, but anytime he does he starts dancing, giving Windham time to recover. Sgt. Craig Pittman finally comes out and tries to get Disco's attention on the match, telling him to “stop that ridiculous dancing!” Pittman ends up being correct, as Barry catches Disco with a big lariat, before placing him on the top rope and hitting a superplex to get the victory.

As Pittman makes Inferno march away, Barry's victory party is crashed by the appearance of Roddy Piper! Piper is up in the stands, and he gives a sarcastic applause to Barry. He says that it was a good win, but not good enough. Piper says that Windham must be slow, because he wants to know what happens to people who have to pay the Piper. Tony cues in those who may not know, that Barry interrupted Piper and Savage's boasting on a recent episode of WCW Saturday Night. Windham challenges Piper to come down to the ring, but the plan comes out fully as Roddy tells him that he doesn't have to – and that's when the huge frame of The Giant steps over the top rope! Windham is still distracted, as The Giant hammers him from behind! Giant delivers two big chokeslams to Windham, as Jesse yells about how big Windham is, but Giant is so much bigger! Tony says that this is sickening, as Piper then enters the ring and takes out a can of black spraypaint, marking Windham's back with the “KoW” letters! What had been a nice win for Windham has turned into a horrible night, as Tony says that Windham may have serious damage done to his neck and back.

Match Time: 7:28

Notes: Piper worked the crowd very well, and came across well.

The Dungeon of Doom (Biohazard, Rio the Renegade, The Willow, The Annihilator) w/Dr. Karnage and Nurse Ana R. Key vs. Erin O'Grady, “Hardwork” Bobby Walker, and The Red, White, And Bruise

Eight-man tag team action is up next, but despite a few good moves by The Patriot and The Eagle, this one isn't in much doubt from the opening bell. The Willow ends this one by hitting Walker with a twisting corkscrew splash for the victory.

After the match, The Boulder joins his companions in the ring, but the show takes on the “comic book” filter as Surge and The Flying Spyder join us! Surge does the talking here, saying that the Dungeon of Doom really got one over on he and the Spyder, but that will not happen again! Because at the Clash of the Champions, they want to take them on in six-man tag team action! Even the Spyder seems confused, but he quickly realizes that Surge has a partner all lined up, but Dr. Karnage doesn't believe it. He says that it will be great to crush the heroes once and for all, accepting their challenge!

Match Time: 7:13

Rating: D / E+

“Just Talk to Us!”

“The Total Package” Lex Luger comes to the ring, and he implores his friend Sting to come out and talk to everyone. He says that WCW apologize for the way he was treated, but he has to let them know that he accepts the apology. Lex saw Sting wearing this weird black and white, and he hopes that doesn't mean he has gone to the Kings of Wrestling – but not hearing from Sting, he has no idea what to think. Luger says that the World title is out of the KoW, and that's what we want! As disappointed as Luger is that he isn't the one wearing it, he is happy in the fact that Hogan, Piper, or Savage don't have it, and he wants Sting to be the same way. He even offers Sting that with all due respect to Rick and Scott, they could restart their old partnership and maybe go after the Tag titles, which they've never held together. About this time, Sting starts walking down the ramp toward the ring! He is still wearing the black and white paint and black trenchcoat from Battlebowl, but instead of shaking Luger's hand, he takes the microphone away from him. Sting looks ready to talk, but he keeps looking out to the crowd, gauging their reaction. Before he can say anything, The Giant enters the ring! Lex sees him coming though, and he starts hammering Giant with right hands, taking it to him! “The Total Package” looks like he is finally putting a chink in the massive man's armor, and he gets ready to slam him! Tony says that nobody has slammed The Giant yet, but Lex Luger could be the man to do it – but Sting hits Luger in the ribs with the black bat! Giant then drills Luger with a chokeslam, as Sting laughs. He gets the microphone and says that he wouldn't team with Luger if he was the last wrestler on Earth! From the voice of this man, Tony says that they've been duped again, because that is not, nor was it ever what Sting's voice has sounded like. Just like Barry Windham earlier, Lex Luger is rolled over and spraypainted with the black letters, as Jesse says that those black letters are a black eye on the entire sport of professional wrestling.

Notes: Luger really enjoyed the freedom to go off-script here, and he performed well. “Sting” improvised well, but did not come out of this looking good.

Rating: C+

Second Hour Recap

As another round of pyro goes off around the Nitro stage, but Tony and Jesse are not in very good spirts as we head back to the commentary booth. They say that last week was a huge night for World Championship Wrestling, but this week it has been all about the Kings of Wrestling attacking people left and right. Jesse says that at least if the main event goes the route of Johnny and Alex getting the victory, it would mean the main event of the Clash of the Champions would not feature anybody from the Kings of Wrestling. Tony says that is a good point, but what about Bam Bam Bigelow? Jesse says that was a huge shock earlier, but there are more shocks to come later, as we enter the second hour of WCW Monday Nitro!

Rating: B-

Some Things to Consider

Speaking of Bigelow, we find him backstage in the locker room getting ready for the main event. He is suddenly approached by The Kings of Wrestling, represented by Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, and Eric Bischoff, along with Woman. They don't let Bam Bam get too many words in, Savage doing a lot of talking as he greets Bigelow like an old friend, saying that it's great to see him “get away from that sinking ship” and that he made the best choice for his career. Piper does the same, but he gets down to business in a hurry by saying that they've come to make a deal with him. He tells Bigelow that the best place for someone of his standing is among the elite, those who came from “that other place” and are better than the scum at the bottom in WCW. Piper says that even though he didn't specifically seek them out to ask, he is here to extend the invitation in what would be a huge coup for the KoW and a big step in the life of Bigelow toward fame, money, anything he wants; all he has to do is destroy Dustin tonight when he gets in the ring with him, and paint him with the colors! Eric puts a can of spraypaint down next to Bigelow's bags, saying that he is even going to sweeten the pot, by saying that even if Bam Bam prefers to wait until after the match, because he wants to win, all he has to do is attack Rhodes and he will be instantly granted that shot at the World title at the Clash of the Champions! Bigelow doesn't respond, and the KoW leave the room just as quickly as they had entered, but definitely leaving him with a lot of things to think about!

Notes: Savage did some masterful interactions here, and really came across well. Eric was underwhelming though, and Bam Bam just looked a bit lost.

The Rock 'n Roll Express vs. Scott Hall & Syxx w/Woman

Ricky and Robert are one of the most decorated teams in WCW's storied history, but Hall and Syxx are utterly vicious. Woman keeps an eye out for Brian Pillman, but despite chants of “Pillmania!” haunting them during this match, the KoW representatives never really lose much of the advantage. The duo try out something new, as Hall drives Gibson down with the Outsider's Edge just as Syxx comes off the turnbuckle with a missile dropkick to him. Syxx gets the cover by obnoxiously posing, straddling the chest of the veteran as Mark Curtis counts the academic three.

Hall takes a microphone after the match is over, kicking Ricky and Robert out of the ring in a disgusting manner, all while taunting them by waving “bye-bye” at them. Hall says that this was “one more for the good guys” before turning his attention to Brian Pillman. He calls “The Loose Cannon” a goof, and says that instead of running around acting like this is the eighties, he should be worrying more about what the KoW are going to do to him once they finally catch up to him! This brings out the originator of Pillmania, and he stands at the top of the aisle. He says to Hall that despite all the pills Scott and Syxx have, they definitely are not taking their vitamins and saying enough prayers, because if they want to make a challenge, Brian will accept it immediately – they killed his nWo, and now it's high time that they pay for it in the ring! The two laugh, saying that there's two of them and only one of him, so of course they will make this an official challenge for the Clash. Brian says that there's one thing that they have overlooked: Pillmania is running wild in more than just the fans, it's running wild in the locker room! And at that, the crowd and Hall and Syxx get a big surprise as Cactus Jack comes out! He gets the microphone from Pillman and says that after last week, he may not be a card-carrying Pillmaniac, but he is ready to pick up the banner and take on Hall and Syxx to teach them the respect that they had never learned before! “Bang bang!” The challenge is made and accepted, and there's nothing that the KoW could do about it; and just like that, we have another huge match added to the Clash of the Champions!

Match Time: 11:56

Notes: Syxx was underwhelming despite getting help from Woman's presence. Cactus looked good in this.

Time for the Party!

“Mean” Gene is now back at the interview area along with The Four Horsemen, who are all smiles and laughs after their attack earlier this evening. All four of them get a chance to talk, with Owen saying that if Austin wasn't such a drunkard, maybe he would have seen that coming! Guerrero talks about how there is no way he would have lost that match, because you're either a Horseman, or you're a nobody, esse! “The Enforcer” says that as if Austin wasn't blind enough to the Horsemen tactics over the years, you would think that of all people, the Road Warriors would know what happens when you are in the sights of the elite group. He says that the mark of excellence comes with one exclusive mindset: do what it takes to be the best, get paid the most, and never retreat. “The Nature Boy” is as animated as ever, saying that those three boys out there just got taken to school by the four best men in the wrestling world! Flair talks about how it doesn't matter what happens, who steps up, the Horsemen are always the measuring stick that knocks them all back down; whether it be in the ring, or whether it be in the limo, in the bar, or even when the girls all line up to ride Space Mountain, whooo! Just then, Bobby Heenan's voice can be heard from off-camera, saying “look what I found!” as the Horsemen are suddenly swarmed by a group of fawning women. As the four men start pairing off with women for the evening, Bobby takes over, saying that this is a lesson to all the humanoids out there: you live by the sword, you die by the sword, and Hawk, Animal, Austin, these men have stabbed themselves so deep by trying to play fight with the Horsemen that their lives may never recover unless they go away for the immediate surgical treatment. The five men and group of ladies all vacate the area, as Gene is left standing there to send us out to the arena for our main event... though not without another glance and sigh at all the “lovely ladies” that seem to be perks of being a Horseman.

Notes: Bobby's mere presence at the end really helped all four of the Horsemen.

“The Natural” Dustin Rhodes and “The Beast from the East” Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Johnny B. Badd and “Das Wunderkind” Alex Wright w/Badd Girl

This tag match was set off with a bang earlier, and it only got hotter as the night progressed. But before we get started, Tony says that he hears that there's something going on in the back – and we head to the locker room to find that Harlem Heat were apparently all ready to rush the ring during this one, but they were headed off by “The Dragon” Ricky Steamboat and the WCW Cruiserweight champion, Dean Malenko! The brawl that is ensuing is being held apart by security, but the message is clear that Badd and Alex are not getting any backup in this one!

Johnny seems to know that something in his plans has gone awry, and that only serves to make him more upset during this match. He uses that anger to his advantage, as he blasts Dustin with a left hand so hard that he falls to the arena floor! Rhodes plays a very good face-in-peril here, as he takes all kinds of high flying moves from his opponents, and there are many times in this one where Badd or Wright look as though they may just land themselves a World title shot. “The Macho Man” Randy Savage makes his way over to the commentary booth about halfway through the match, saying that he's here to study up on whoever he may be facing at SuperBrawl. Dustin finally makes the hot tag to Bigelow, who comes in and cleans house on both Johnny and Alex. Badd gets a chair from ringside and tries to get into the ring with it as the match starts to break down and Tommy Young loses control, but Ron Simmons rushes out of the locker room and takes it away from him! Johnny starts taking off toward the back as Ron threatens him, leaving Wright all along to fall victim to a running bulldog from Dustin, and then a falling headbutt from Bigelow to lose the match.

As Tommy raises the hands of the victors, it becomes apparent that Bigelow is eyeing up the World title in Dustin's hands! Savage calls for him to “do it brutha!” and he teases potentially hitting Rhodes from behind... but he instead turns him around and shakes his hand! But it's at this point that Savage starts spouting into the headset “It's time, it's time! Plan B is go!”

“Plan B” ends up being Piper and Savage hitting the ring with the massive Vader at their side! Despite putting up a good fight, there's no way two already tired men are going to withstand this three-on-two advantage, and Savage drills Bam Bam with a flying elbow as Vader delivers a vicious powerbomb to the champion! They are prepared to spraypaint both men, but Randy and Roddy both are taken aback by Vader grabbing Rhodes by the chin. He yells into Dustin's vacant, knocked out face that his challenge is accepted! Vader is calling his shot, he will accept Dustin's challenge next week! Piper and Savage both grab him and start pulling “The Monster” from the ring, trying to talk to him about this. The KoW have left the ring, when the lights go out...

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/wcw-95/sting2.jpg

When they come back on, everyone is shocked to see Sting in the center of the ring! Tony says that Sting must have been trying to make the save, but Jesse corrects him that if Sting was here for the save, he came by a few minutes too late! Sting stares down the KoW members in the aisle, but he also stares down at the fallen bodies of Dustin and Bam Bam, leaving everyone wondering just what his game is! That's all the time we have this week fans, be sure to watch WCW Pro, Saturday Night, and Worldwide this weekend where we try to figure out just what the heck is going on around here!

Match Time: 11:47

Notes: Bigelow did not come out of the attack looking good.
