World Series of Fighting Signs UFC Vet Jim Miller

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ --- The World Series of Fighting announced today that they had reached an agreement with former Ultimate Fighting Championship contender and #4 ranked lightweight Jim Miller. Terms of the deal were not immediately available but the UFC vet is reported to have signed a five-fight deal worth in excess of $100,000 per fight.

Miller will immediately become one of the most well known fighters on the WSOF roster due to his exposure with the UFC. WSOF officials said they will include Miller in their lightweight tournament which kicks off a week from Saturday. Currently it is not known how the tournament will be altered to accommodate Miller's entry but he is expected to get a first round bye and be one of the top four seeds in the tournament. The top four seeds in the lightweight tournament were Eddie Alvarez, Geisas Cavalcante, Ronys Torres and Lyle Beerbohm when originally announced.

The best case scenario for the WSOF would be to have one its winner from next weekend's opening round suffer an injury and be unable to fight in the second round. That would create an opening for him and the seeding could be shifted. Without and injury the logistics of adding Miller could become tricky.

However it works out, Miller is expected to be a finalist in the tournament along with Alvarez. Originally, Alvarez opened as a 2-1 favorite to win the tournament according to Vegas odds makers. With Miller's entry, Alvarez drops slightly to 5-2 while Miller enters at 4-1.

WSOF 1- Lightweight - Round 1 takes place one week from this Saturday and can be seen live on NBC Sports Network.

Where the Best Prove They Are the Best

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING

WSOF 1 - LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT QUARTERFINALS

RESULTS

The World Series of Fighting held their 4th event on Saturday night. This time it was the quarterfinals of their season 1 light heavyweight tournament. Also, for the first time, the WSOF event also included the first round of another tournament, the season 1 middleweight tournament. The light heavyweight quarterfinals were shown on the evening's main card while the middleweight first round took place on the preliminaries.

The event started off interestingly as touted prospect Uriah Hall took on UFC veteran David Loiseau. Hall is from nearby New York but is seemed as if the majority of the crowd was going for Loiseau. "The Crow" circled early and tried to dart in and dart out with strikes. Hall waited patiently and then was able to counter Loiseau coming in later in the round. Loiseau went down and Hall swarmed him and started raining hammer strikes but the ref jumped in quickly to save the crowd favorite from any more punishment. Surprisingly, the crowd booed and seemed to disapprove. Maybe they thought the ref jumped in too early or that Loiseau didn't put up more of a fight but it looked like a clean finish from where the media sat.

The second fight was very quick and Rodney Wallace caught another UFC vet, Jake Rosholt, with an early punch which led to a 40 second TKO victory. That fight was followed up by a close, back-and-forth battle between former UFC veteran Joe Doerksen and relative newcomer Romulo Barral. Some questioned why Doerksen (49-16) was fighting an inexperienced guy like Barral (2-1) but the underdog quickly showed he belonged. Barral actually appeared to be more active to most of the media but Doerksen's grappling appeared to sway the judges and the UFC finally got on the board with a razor thin decision.

Danillo Villefort, who made one UFC appearance himself, took on noted kickboxer and former UFC fighter Melvin Mahoef in the final middleweight bout. Villefort showed why he is an acclaimed grappler and easily controlled the dangerous srtiker on the ground before getting him to tap to an Americana with just over a minute to go in the first round.

The main card started with a match between accomplished grapplers in Ricardo Arona and Robert Drysdale. Arona and Drysdale battled in an entertaining jiu jitsu match and each appeared to have the other in trouble due to submissions but Drysdale would eventually come out on top. Drysdale now moves to 6-0 in his young career but looks to be a legitimate contender due to his grappling.

Rafael Cavalcante was up next and made relative quick work of the more experienced Aaron Rosa. "Feijao" knocked Rosa down early and used his grappling sink in a kimura just 3:01 into the fight. That was followed by Anthony "Rumble" Johnson agianst TJ O'Brien in the night's co-main event. O'Brien had missed weight by an astonishing 10 pounds and there was much debate over what should happen should he beat Johnson. Fortunately for Johnson and the WSOF, "Rumble" was able to use strikes and counter grappling to earn a decisive 1st round TKO.

The main event arrived and the fans were anxious to see the biggest name in the WSOF, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, in action. Most expected Jackson to have an easy debut with his opponent, DJ Linderman. Jackson did control the first round and certainly won on the score cards. Linderman seemed apt to try to avoid strikes and get lucky with a big punch. That big punch never found its home, however. After a feeling out process much of the first round "Rampage" connected on a combo that rocked Linderman early in the 2nd. The former UFC champ swarmed his stunned opponent who fell to the canvas and absorbed a few more punches before the referee stepped in to save him. That sent the small, but vocal crowd into a frenzy and howled around the cage celebrating his win.

The WSOF certainly has to feel good abou their fourth show even though the attendance and viewership ratings haven't been where they would have liked. Now that the first round tournament fights are mostly over and their bigger named fighters are appearing on the cards it shouldn't be too long before both of those numbers start to see significant increases.

Main Card

Quinton Jackson (33-11, 1-0 WSOF) def. DJ Linderman (13-4, 1-1) via TKO (strikes) Round 2, 0:53 (Great)

Anthony Johnson (12-4, 1-0) def. Jake O'Brien (14-5, 1-1) via TKO (strikes) (Great)

Rafael Cavalcante (13-3, 1-0) def. Aaron Rosa (18-6, 1-1) via submission (kimura) Round 1, 3:01 (Good)

Robert Drysdale (6-0, 2-0) def. Ricardo Arona (14-6, 0-1) via unanimous decision (Average)

Prelims

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING

WSOF 1 - HEAVYWEIGHT QUARTERFINALS

JULY 4th WEEKEND - NBC SPORTS NETWORK

World Series of Fighting 1 - Heavyweight Quarterfinals took place Friday night from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. It kicked off the holiday weekend and featured a remarkable fireworks show over the Atlantic following the card. The event was the fifth by the WSOF and followed its best show in June, Light Heavyweight Quarterfinals. There were eight fights and the main card, which was televised by NBC Sports Network, featured four quarterfinal fights from the heavyweight tournament.

The night started off dubiously with a poor showing from Levan Razmadze and Mike Hackert. Both fighters tired early and traded failed takedown attempts. However, Razmadze did just enough with his striking to earn the unanimous decision.

The night's second fight was quite a different story. Magomed Malikov and Dawid Baziak put on a show with a spectacular kick boxing display. Each fighter used feints and movement to land punches early on but both stayed out of any significant danger.

In the second round, Malikov came out swinging and almost immediately put Baziak on the ground with a well timed swarm. Malikov tried to get position on the ground but was unable to capitalize. Baziak was able to scramble back to his feet where the round ended but not before Malikov connected on a direct shot to the cup that put Baziak on the may for most of the allotted five minutes.

The third round was more of the same as Malikov came out swinging hard. However, Baziak was ready and had some well times counters. Baziak actually wobbled Malikov mid-way through the round but the feisty Russian recovered while frustrating his foe with movement. Eventually, Malikov caught Baziak pressing and timed a kick with a blistering combo to knock down Baziak. The punches kept coming and the ref had to leap in to save the Polish fighter from a date with the plastic surgeon.

The fans were raucous and ready for some more indoor fireworks. Gabriel Salinas-Jones took on Aljin Ahmic in the next fight and while it failed to live up to the previous fight, it was a decent display of martial arts technique. Salins-Jones used his grappling and a varied jiu-jitsu attack to control his overmatched counterpart and secured a unanimous decision victory.

Sean McCorkle and David Oliva followed with another grappling match but this one was mostly contested in the clinch. McCorkle used his Greco-Roman wrestling to punish Oliva against the cage en route to another unanimous decision win.

The main card was next and was led off by Aleksander Emelianenko chasing Smealinho Rama around the cage. Fedor's younger brother was able to secure a takedown in round two but could not do much with it so relied on his striking for most of the fight. Near the end of round three Emelianenko dodged a huge overhand right and caught Rama on the counter. Emelianenko swarmed with a bevy of punches to the fallen foe and was pushed off by the ref securing the TKO victory.

Sergei Kharitonov followed with a easy won over fellow Russian Shamil Abdurahimov. Kharitonov used a trip takedown to get ground control and then worked to position before pounding away on his opponent for the stoppage win.

Jeff Monson and Justin Wren followed as the co-main event. Monson was the favorite and was the #4 seed in the tournament facing #12 (Wren). Wren, however, was having none of the underdog role and came out looking to grind down the smaller Monson. Wren early and often wrestled the "Snowman" up against the cage where he held him and used an occasional knee or punch to maintain his position. This methodology continued for all three round and Wren secured the upset win and a date with the winner of the next fight in the semi-finals.

Former UFC champion Josh Barnett headlined the main event and some had his inexperienced opponent Jared Rosholt (5-0) pulling off the upset. However, the "War Machine" used his grappling to take Rosholt down early and, while he couldn't secure a submission, controlled enough to take the round. Rosholt came out early in the second with a swift double-leg but Barnett would eventually catch the newcomer in a triangle. Rosholt tried to fight it off but Barnett would eventually extend the arm and force the tapout.

The WSOF will switch to the lightweight tournament next month while the heavyweight semi-final is expected to take place in October. Each round of each tournament will be shown on NBC Sports Network and most, if not all, are expected to take place in New Jersey.

Main Card

Josh Barnett (33-6, 1-0 WSOF) def. Jared Rosholt (5-1, 1-1) via submission (triangle with armbar) Round 2, 4:33 (Good)

Justin Wren (12-2, 2-0) def. Jeff Monson (45-15, 0-1) via unanimous decision (Poor)

Sergei Kharitonov (19-5, 1-0) def. Shamil Abdurahimov (13-2, 1-1) via TKO (strikes) Round 1, 3:40 (Good)

Aleksander Emelianenko (18-4, 1-0) def. Smealinho Rama (6-1, 1-1) via TKO (strikes) Round 3, 3:52 (Poor)

Prelims

Sean McCorkle (16-3, 1-1) def. David Oliva (7-2, 1-1) via unanimous decision (Average)

Forgot to add the seedings initially. Went back and added them if anybody is interested. Also, Villefort was out 2-6 months with a back injury and was replaced by Strickland. Hall was needing extra time to recuperate so was replaced. Sorry I forgot to explain that to those of you following along.
