This might be of some help as well. And no, not just posting because my guy Sidney is #2 at SG behind the obvious one at #1 SG. :)

Not a scientific study of course, but at least it's more information.

I threw the article into excel, zipped it, and attached for easy reference.

Slater Martin is rated a C on defense from what I saw, but he should be around an A. He was one of the premier defenders and a vital part to the early 50's Laker dynasty.

The following is taken from a NY Times article about his death a few months ago.

"The Lakers prized Martin for his ability to defend against star guards like the Davies-Wanzer backcourt of the Rochester Royals and the Sharman-Cousy tandem of the Boston Celtics.

'All they expected of me was to hold Bob Davies or Bobby Wanzer or Bill Sharman or Bob Cousy to 12 points, and then we’d win the game,' Martin told Charles Salzberg in the oral history 'From Set Shot to Slam Dunk' (1987). 'If I got 6 or 8 points extra, I was home free. Besides, they found out I could pass the ball.'"

Even at 32 years old, a newspaper headline read "Slater Martin Checks Bob Cousy"(I can't post links <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> )
