CapnPitt
I know it's a rarity, but shouldn't there be an option to attempt an onside free kick after a safety? In 8 1/2 seasons I have had a need for it twice.
sjt81
I believe this would not be within the rules of football. Free Kicks after a safety, I believe(though I may be wrong) are treated as punts, and thus must be touched by a member of the opposing team in order to become a live ball(while on a kickoff, anything past 10 yards is live)
CapnPitt
I'm pretty sure they're a free kick and not a scrimmage kick. You have the option to punt or kick, most people elect to punt.
John Comey
It is a free kick; you have the option...but it is not like a regular kick, where you can go onsides. This is my understanding; the other team is getting the ball, unless they fumble. -John
CapnPitt
I'm pretty sure they're allowed under the NCAA rules. Rule 6, Section 1 establishes a kick after safety as a free kick from the 20. Under article 3 of that section, it establishes that after it touches a receiving team player OR breaks the 10 yard restraining line, the ball is eligible for catch or recovery by the kicking team. I could be wrong, but I didn't notice any exceptions for the free kick after safety.
