Main Card Breakdown

Diego Nunes vs Rob Emerson

The main event, and the first quarter final of this season's featherweight tournament. UFC veteran Diego Nunes will look to get back into the win column with a victory in the night's main event. Going 1-2 in his last three, with losses to Dennis Siver and Nik Lentz, and a dominant decision win over Bart Palaszewski. Nunes is a skilled featherweight who prefers to fight on the feet, where he can utilize his quick footwork and flashy kicks.

His opponent, fellow UFC vet Rob Emerson will look to capitalize on his recent success in the featherweight division, as he is 2-1 in his last three fights. While Emerson is an all rounder, who is a tough opponent both on the feet and on the ground.

Marcus Davis vs Cosmo Alexandre

Moving on to our co-main event, UFC veteran Marcus Davis takes on highly decorated muay thai fighter Cosmo Alexandre. Davis, who's Bellator debut no-contest against the brawling Waachiim Spiritwolf, will look to win this fight and move on to the semi-finals of this season's lightweight tournament. Formerly a boxer, Marcus Davis is unsurprisingly good on his feet, is also competent on the ground with 9 of his 22 wins coming by way of submission.

Alexandre is a former kickboxing champion and one of the best pure strikers to enter into MMA. Dangerous on the feet, the man known as "Good Boy" has also trained hard on his wrestling and jiu jitsu to prevent being taken down and submitted. A win over a UFC vet will be huge for Alexandre, but is he ready to make that big step up?

Feature Bouts

On the undercard, welterweights Bryan Baker and Brad Blackburn will go toe-to-toe. The hard hitting Baker enters as the favorite against UFC vet Blackburn. Both are known for their high action fights, as well as being hard hitting strikers.

The last fight on the main card is a heavyweight attraction between prospects Augusto Sakai and Tony Johnson. Sakai, an undefeated striker from Brazil looked impressive in his debut, wearing down Rob Horton with strikes before finishing him with knees in the clinch. A former football player, Tony Johnson boasts an impressive 7-1 record, including wins over Tim Sylvia and Tony Lopez. While he prefers to grapple in the clinch or on the ground, Johnson also possesses heavy hands on the feet.

Preliminary Card Recap

Lightweight Division: Shamar "The Watchman" Bailey vs Juan "Juanito" Barrantes

In the first fight of the evening, UFC veteran Shamar Bailey took on Costa Rican Juan Barrantes. Bailey pushed the pace from bell to bell, actively looking for takedowns and landing good shots on the feet. While he began to fade in the third, he continued to outpace Barrantes and finished the fight landing good strikes in the clinch. Bailey by unanimous decision.

Featherweight Division: Alvin Robinson vs Bubba "The Highlight Kid" Jenkins

In a grueling bout, Bubba Jenkins used his wrestling to control Robinson in the clinch and pummel him with punches and elbows. In the first, Jenkins landed two big elbows in the clinch that opened up a cut on Robinson. Robinson tried hard to get Jenkins to the floor to work his jiu jitsu, but to no avail, going 0-6 in takedown attempts. Jenkins wins an impressive unanimous decision.

Welterweight Division: A.J. Matthews vs Marcio Navarro

Billed as a fight between two BJJ practitioners, it was Matthews who opted to keep the fight on the feet. Both fighters were cautious in the first round, but in the second Matthews turned it up, dropping Navarro with a right hand. Navarro was finally able to take a fatigued Matthews down in the third and looked for some submissions, but it was too little too late as Matthews scores the unanimous decision.

Bantamweight Division: Crisanto "The Slugger" Pitpitunge vs Danny Tims

Pitpitunge controlled the fight with his striking, dropping Tims in the first and wobbling him in the second round. Tims, clearly uncomfortable on the feet, tried to get the fight to the ground but Pitpitunge showed good takedown defense, stopping 9 of 10 takedowns. Tims was able to outpace a tired Pitpitunge in the third round, but it wasn't enough. Pitpitunge takes the unanimous decision.

Middleweight Division: Bruno "Carioca" Santos vs Tom DeBlass

In a great display of grappling, BJJ practitioners Santos and DeBlass spent most of this fight on the ground. DeBlass, who spent most of the fight on his back, actively looked for submissions and was even able to hit a couple of good sweeps. However, Santos' top pressure was the defining factor, able to takedown DeBlass numerous times and controlling from the top, he wins a competitive unanimous decision by surprisingly wide margins.

Heavyweight Division: Mark Holata vs Vinicius Queiroz

The story of this rematch was Queiroz's striking. Queiroz, able to drop Holata twice in the first round, as well as consistently landing hard low kicks. Queiroz began to fade in the second and third, but Holata was unable to capitalize as Queiroz continued to put pressure on him. Queiroz wins a dominant unanimous decision.

Main Card

Heavyweight Feature Bout: Augusto Sakai vs Tony Johnson

Round 1:The bell sounds and the fighters make their way to the center of the cage. Sakai lands a nice jab-straight right combination before moving in with a flurry of punches, only to have Johnson avoid the strikes. Johnson flicks out a jab and Sakai counters with a hard low kick. Johnson waits for an opening and clinches Sakai, pressing him up against the cage. The two battle against the cage with dirty boxing, turning each other around multiple times.

Round 2: Sakai lands a nice combination of punches that stagger Johnson. A noticeably hurt Johnson gets tagged with a right that sends him to the canvas! Sakai mounts him and begins to unload with elbows and punches. Johnson is bleeding now from one of those elbows. Johnson struggles to move Sakai off of him but with no success, spending the rest of the round under Sakai, getting peppered with strikes.

Round 3: The two make their way to the center of the cage. Both men are now breathing heavier. Johnson engages in the clinch, pressing Sakai up against the cage. Johnson spends the rest of the round using his dirty boxing against the cage to batter Sakai. And with that, we go to the scorecards. Judge #1 sees it 29-28 in favor of Johnson, judge #2 scores it 29-28 for Sakai, and judge #3 has it 29-28 in favor of your winner by split decision... Tony Johnson!

Johnson does enough to win the controversial split decision, but looks unimpressive in the process. It's possible we will see both fighters in an upcoming tournament.

Welterweight Feature Bout: Bryan "The Beast" Baker vs "Bad" Brad Blackburn

Round 1: Baker keeps Blackburn on his toes with some feints, and shoots for a takedown not long after. Blackburn stuffs the takedown and they are back to the center. Blackburn throws the body kick but Baker is able to use it to sweep him to the ground. Blackburn pulls guard. Baker tries his to pass guard, but Blackburn keeps it secure while staying active and looking for submission attempts. Blackburn grabs a hold of a guillotine and uses it to sweep Baker into side control but it's short lived as Baker is able to scramble out of position and is once again in Blackburn's guard.

Round 2: Baker lands a nice counter left hand. Blackburn stings Baker with a jab. Blackburn stuffs a takedown. Blackburn is finding more success in this round, landing good jabs to the face of Baker. Blackburn counters a flurry of punches with a hard body kick. Baker looks for the single leg but Blackburn sees it coming, stuffing it with ease.

Round 3: Blackburn counters with a nice left hand. Despite his fatigue, Baker continues to look for takedowns but finds no success. Blackburn lands yet another good body kick. Blackburn's attacks to the body, as well as his counter wrestling, have really drained Baker of his energy. We go to the scorecards.

All three judges score the fight 29-28 in favor of the winner, Brad Blackburn!

Blackburn's best weapons were his jabs, kicks to the body and his wrestling ability. He upsets Baker and will most likely be in the next welterweight tournament.

Lightweight Tournament Quarter-Final: Marcus "The Irish Hand Grenade" Davis vs Cosmo "Good Boy" Alexandre

Round 1: This is for a place in the lightweight tournament finals. Alexandre counters a combination of punches with a left hand. Alexandre misses a low kick, which allows Davis to land a great jab-hook combination. Alexandre eats some hard body shots followed by a right cross from Davis. Davis counters a body kick with a hard left hand to the body. The body shots from Davis are very effective and will pay dividends later in the fight. Davis throws out a jab but Alexandre counters it with a nice right hand over the top. Davis goes down! Alexandre pounces on him and is looking to finish, but Davis keeps his composure and is able to pull half guard. Less than a minute left. Marcus latches onto an arm and starts to crank, he's trying to finish with a kimura! He turns Alexandre over and adjusts his position to get more leverage, Alexandre taps!

Your winner by submission due to an armlock, Marcus Davis!

Marcus Davis submits Cosmo Alexandre, and secures his place in the lightweight tournament semi-finals.

Featherweight Tournament Quarter-Finals: Diego "The Gun" Nunes vs Rob "The Saint" Emerson

Round 1: Nunes lands a nice counter left hand. Emerson shoots in for a takedown but is unable to get Nunes down. Nunes looks like he's trying to fight on the outside, using his stinging jab to prevent Emerson from getting in close. Emerson tries for another takedown, but Nunes shucks him off and catches him with a good punch for his troubles.

Round 2: Nunes looks like someone lit a fire under him, because he comes out aggressive. Emerson avoids a flurry of punches. Nunes attempts a wild spinning back fist but Emerson makes him pay for it, catching him with a good combination. Nunes answers with a hard kick to the body. Nunes tries for a flashy spinning heel kick to the legs ala Andy Hug but Emerson does well to avoid it. Nunes slips a right hand and lands one of his own, dropping Emerson! Emerson immediately looks to defend, putting his legs up anticipating Nunes. Nunes lands a kick to the calf. Nunes dives in an gets side control on Emerson. Nunes hits Emerson with a hard knee to the body. Emerson tries to scramble but Nunes capitalizes on it, taking his back in the process. Nunes sinks his hooks in and is looking for the rear naked choke!

Emerson shows heart, preventing Nunes from getting the choke and surviving the round.

Round 3: Emerson comes out and immediately gets a takedown, finally getting Nunes to the ground. Nunes stays active, looking for a triangle from the bottom despite his fatigue. Emerson uses the opportunity to pass straight into side mount. Emerson is looking for an arm triangle choke and it looks like he has it! A tired Nunes holds on, but is eventually forced to tap out!

Your winner by submission due to an arm triangle choke, Rob Emerson!

Rob Emerson upsets heavy favorite Diego Nunes in a come from behind victory and advances into the tournament semi-finals.

Main Card Breakdown

Michinori Tanaka vs Rafael Silva

This main event will see bantamweight quarter finalists Michinori Tanaka and Rafael Silva go toe-to-toe. Tanaka, who burst onto the MMA scene after dominating in Guam's Pacific Xtreme Combat, is a highly touted prospect from Japan. He's an exciting grappler who is constantly hunting for submissions, weather on top or on bottom.

Rafael Silva is an unknown who's spent his career fighting in Brazil. He has a high rate of finishes, and is capable of ending the fight on the feet and on the ground. He's the more versatile of the two, but is certainly the underdog coming into this fight.

Jimmie Rivera vs Russell Doane

In the co-main event, bantamweight prospects Jimmie Rivera and Russell Doane will fight for their spot in the bantamweight tournament semi-finals. Jimmie Rivera is a big prospect in the bantamweight division, boasting an impressive 12-1 record, including wins over Abel Cullum and Jared Papazian. A short yet powerfully built bantamweight, Rivera uses his wrestling to excel in the clinch as well as on top of his opponents. He has a high rate of decisions, finishing only 3 of his 12 wins, but has shown he has power in his hands and decent submissions.

On the other side of the cage will be Hawaii's Russell Doane. Doane is a tall, lanky bantamweight with a knack for finishing fights by TKO or submission-almost the exact opposite of Rivera. Many consider Doane a big prospect in the 135lb division due to his exciting style and tall frame. Due to his fights taking place in regional promotions and his lack of a big name win, he comes in as the underdog against Rivera.

Anthony Gomez vs Phelipe Lins

On the undercard will be the second of two light heavyweight tourney bouts. Anthony Gomez lost his debut in Bellator to Travis Wiuff, but rebounded with two rear naked choke victories. Proficient on the feet and on the ground, Gomez is looking to score the upset victory and move on to the semi-finals.

A prospect hailing from Brazil, Phelipe Lins talent lies in his striking. Debuting in 2005, he racked up a 4-0 record including two wins over UFC vet Antonio Mendes. He stayed inactive for 5 years before returning in 2011 with a KO victory in Brazil. Despite being a favorite to win the tournament, Lins has not fought in 2 years. What effect that will have, we'll have to find out.

Liam McGeary vs Atanas Djambazov

Finally Liam McGeary and Atanas Djambazov will fight in the final tournament bout of the evening. Standing 6'6", light heavyweight prospect Liam McGeary towers over most of his opponents. A rangey striker who also possesses a good ground game, McGeary is a dark horse to some in this tournament. With all that said, his wrestling has yet to be tested and his level of opposition is almost laughable.

McGeary's opponent, the Bulgarian Atanas Djambazov, is a powerful wrestler who has spent most of his career using his grappling abilities to dominate local opponents in Europe. Despite his one dimensional style, his wrestling may be a defining factor in this against McGeary.

((Sorry for the lack of posts. I already ran Bellator 97, so here are the results.))

Bellator MMA 97

Preliminary Card Recap

Heavyweight Division: Damian "The Polish Pitbull" Grabowski vs Raphael Davis

Two heavyweights known for their grappling abilities, it was Grabowski who connected early on a big right hand to drop Davis. Following up with a barrage of strikes, Grabowski forces the stoppage fourty-five seconds into round number one and wins by technical knockout.

Featherweight Division: Julio Cesar Neves vs Nazareno Malegarie

A huge prospect on the regional scene in Brazil, Neves came into this bout with a 25-0 record. Across from him was Brazil based Argentine, Nazareno Malegarie. Malegarie, a skilled grappler, looked to take it to the ground early but found his takedown attempts fruitless. Late in the first round, Neves connected on a hard right hand that floored Malegarie, following it with a barrage of elbows and punches to force the stoppage with three seconds left in the first round. Julio Cesar Neves wins by technical knockout and remains undefeated.

Welterweight Division: War Machine vs Luis "Sergio Junior" Melo

Coming in as favorite, pundits and fans alike had War Machine winning with relative ease. Good thing Luis Melo didn't get the memo. War Machine started off strong, landing good strikes from the outside, but it was the older and more seasoned Melo who forced the action, landing hard low kicks before taking it to the ground in round two. From there, the Brazilian quickly locked in an arm triangle choke to force the tap at 3:37 of round two. Luis Melo wins by submission and improves to 2-0 under the Bellator banner.

Light Heavyweight Division: Travis "Diesel" Wiuff vs Zelg "Benkei" Galesic

These veterans in the 205lbs division engaged in a back and forth striking match on the feet. Wiuff tried his best to get the fight to the ground from the clinch, but Galesic's improved wrestling skills allowed him to reverse the positions every time. Galesic forced Wiuff to stand with him, and the result was Galesic landing good shots from the outside all night. Zelg Galesic wins an easy unanimous decision.

Middleweight Division: Duane Bastress vs Herbert "Whisper" Goodman

Two men with a high number of finishes on their resumes, but with vastly different styles. Goodman came out looking to try and strike with Bastress, but Bastress, a Division III wrestler, immediately got the takedown. To the surprise of many, Goodman was able to sweep Bastress into side mount twice and counter the attempts at ground and pound from Bastress. However, his success would end late in the first round as Bastress connected on a diving right hand into the guard, instantly putting Goodman to sleep. Duane Bastress wins by KO.

Bantamweight Division: Hiroshi "Iron" Nakamura vs Keola "Ola" Silva

In the final preliminary bout of the evening, standout wrestler Keola Silva took on Japanese judoka Hiroshi Nakamura. Nakamura dominated from the get go, stuffing Silva's takedown attempts and getting some of his own. Nakamura wore down the less experienced Silva, eventually stopping him with strikes in round three. Nakamura wins by technical knockout and improves to 2-1 in the promotion.

Main Card

Light Heavyweight Quarter-Final: Liam McGeary vs Atanas Djambazov

The first fight in the light heavyweight tournament. McGeary came out looking to stand and trade with the Bulgarian grappler, but Djambazov did as he was expected and shot for takedowns. McGeary looked good in defending the shots and landing short counter strike. In the second, Djambazov found more success, getting a takedown and controlling McGeary against the cage, landing short punches in tight. Going into the third, both fighters were noticeably fatigued. McGeary dug deep, defending takedowns and landing very hard low kicks and jabs to eek out a unanimous decision win in a very close fight. Liam McGeary wins by unanimous decision and moves on to the semi-final round of the light heavyweight tournament.

Light Heavyweight Quarter-Final: Anthony Gomez vs Phelipe Lins

Many questioned how Lins would deal with his ring rust, coming in against Dallas' Anthony Gomez. Lins proved all of his doubters wrong, coming out and starching Gomez with a big right hand in the opening frame. Gomez tried to recover, but was clearly hurt. Lin stayed aggressive, stalking Gomez and once again landing with the right, this time putting to him to sleep. Lins wins by KO and moves to the light heavyweight tournament semi-finals.

Bantamweight Tournament Quarter-Final: Jimmie "El Terror" Rivera vs Russell Doane

Two highly regarded bantamweight prospects to open up the bantamweight tournament. Rivera looked for the takedown early, but it was Doane who found the most success on the ground. Consistently stuffing Rivera's takedowns, and getting some of his own. Rivera fought hard, but Doane's pressure seemed to overwhelm him. Doane upsets Rivera to win a unanimous decision and move on in the bantamweight tournament.

Bantamweight Tournament Quarter-Final: Michinori Tanaka vs Rafael Silva

In the main event of the evening and second quarter final bout of the bantamweight tournament, top Japanese prospect Michinori Tanaka took on Brazilian all-rounder Rafael Silva. Many felt that if Silva were to win, it would be on the feet but it was Tanaka who connected early, dropping Silva and finishing him with strikes on the ground in under a minute. With this, Tanaka not only wins and moves on to the semi-final round of the tournament, but also secures his first win by knockout.

A veteran of the not defunct Cage Rage and Sengoku promotions, Ronnie Mann is a well rounded fighter with a good submission game from his back and knockout power on the feet. He's an exciting fighter who is always gunning for the finish, but has come up short against higher level opponents. Debuting in Bellator in 2012, Shahbulat Shamhalaev quickly established himself as a deadly knockout artist. He won the Bellator featherweight tournament with consecutive knockouts over tournament favorites Mike Richman and Rad Martinez, but was quickly choked out by Pat Curran in the resulting title bout. Coming off the first loss of his career since 2009, can Shamhalaev reestablish himself as the feared striker that he was, or will he come up short against the British all rounder?

Antonio "Pato" Carvalho vs Luis "Baboon" Palomino

Fresh off the heels of being released by the UFC, Antonio Carvalho quickly made the jump to Bellator. He make's his debut in a tournament bout, facing the Peruvian veteran Luis Palomino. Primarily a striker, Carvalho packs power in both his hands and feet, but also has a pretty solid ground game. Holding notable wins over Hatsu Hioki, Lion Takeshi, Rumina Sato and Daniel Pineda, Carvalho hopes to recreate the aura that surrounded him after those key victories.

Luis Palomino is a fighter who has succeeded on the South American regional scene. A knockout artist with KO victories over Daron Cruickshank and Hero's middleweight champion, JZ Cavalcante, Palomino is always a threat when the fight is standing. On the ground, Palomino is lacking in an offensive guard and is easily dominated by high level grapplers and wrestlers. In Carvalho, he faces a skilled jiu jitsu practitioner with knockout power, can Palomino over the odds and defeat the favorite? Or will he once again fail to succeed on the bigger stages in MMA.

Anthony Leone vs Joe "The Juggernaut" Taimanglo

Currently 3-2 overall under the Bellator banner, including a victory over former bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky, Anthony Leone is a skilled grappler who likes to finish his opponents by submission. While his grappling is his specialty, his striking is nothing to write home about and he lacks the knockout power to threaten opponents on the feet. After going 1-6 from 2010 to 2011, he's now on a four fight winning streak, three of those fights within Bellator. He's hoping to keep the ball rolling and score a submission finish against his opponent.

One of the better fighters to come out of Guam, Joe Taimanglo is the former PXC featherweight champion and also likes to finish his opponents by submission. A very powerful grappler with heavy hands to boot, "Baby Joe" is on a nine fight winning streak with all but two of those wins coming by way of submission or knockout. He opened up his Bellator career with a submission finish of Ronnie Rogers and is now looking to make it two in a row within the promotion. Will he live up to the hype, or will he fall to the more experienced Leone?

Rick Hawn vs Savant "Black Superman" Young

Despite his impressive judo pedigree, Rick Hawn has spent most of his MMA career knocking his opponents out. A perennial contender in Bellator's welterweight and lightweight divisions, Hawn is now 36 and hopes to earn another title shot after being quickly submitted by lightweight champion Michael Chandler.

A long time MMA veteran, Young has been fighting since 1998. Surprisingly well rounded, Young possesses a deadly guillotine choke and KO power in both of his hands. Holding notable wins over Kendall Grove, Ed West and Shooto featherweight champ Lion Takeshi, Young hopes to continue his recent success and upset Rick Hawn on his way to the lightweight tournament semi-finals.

Alexander "Tiger" Sarnavskiy vs Eric "It's a Wrap" Reynolds

Entering Bellator in 2012 with a perfect 20-0 record, Russia's Alexander Sarnavskiy had a ton of hype coming with him in his debut against veteran Rich Clementi. Clementi scored the upset decision and handed Sarnavskiy his first loss as a professional. Having rebounded with victories over Tony Hervey and Thiago Michel, the man known as "Tiger" hopes to finish his opponent and move on in the tournament

Despite being 1-2 within Bellator, Reynolds losses came to against top opposition in Jorge Masvidal and Eddie Alvarez. A jack of all trades, Reynolds can strike but most of his wins have come by way of submission. One of the biggest underdogs on the card, Reynolds hopes to defeat Sarnavskiy and move on to the semi-finals.

"Ill" Will Brooks vs Patricky Pitbull

A relatively unknown fighter before dominating Japan's Satoru Kitaoka to an upset victory, Brooks is a powerfully built wrestler who likes to slam his opponents to the ground and finish the fight with ground and pound. Winning his Bellator debut against the very game Ricardo Tirloni, he was knocked out in under a minute by Saad Awad. He hopes to win the biggest fight of his career and knockout the man known as "Pitbull".

Known best for his flying knee KO over Toby Imada, Patricky Pitbull is always looking to knock his opponents out as shown in his KO victories over Kurt Pellegrino and Rob McCullough. He has fallen on hard times as of late, going 1-4 in his last five, getting his arm broken by Lloyd Woodard and getting knocked out by Eddie Alvarez. Pitbull needs a win now more than ever.
