1991: The Early Rise of Eric Bischoff

Dusty Rhodes would arrive on the scene in World Championship Wrestling in January 1991 amongst a scene of what many people would call chaos. Former Executive Vice President Jim Herd had gone far and beyond out of his way to alienate the entire locker room and had made drastic budget cuts by firing a good portion of the talent roster. Herd had effectively brought WCW's to it's knees from his incompetence. Rhodes was originally promised a high executive position when he left WWF for World Championship Wrestling but Ted Turner would inform him otherwise during a meeting on January 1, 1991.

During the course of the meeting Ted Turner appointed Eric Bischoff (A former AWA Announcer who had been working in the front office of WCW recently) as the new Executive Vice President of WCW with Dusty Rhodes effectively acting as Eric's consultant. Dusty was none to pleased about the idea of serving under someone who barely had any wrestling experience but he knew that he'd been left with little choice after leaving the WWF abruptly.

Just when things couldn't get worse for Dusty Rhodes... they did. Ric Flair, Barry Windham and Sid Vicious had all handed in one month notices to WCW Head office due to an increasingly unprofessional work environment and had been offered jobs in New York for the World Wrestling Federation. WCW's Top Storyline of the Four Horsemen vs. Sting was about to come to a very quick end.

Ric Flair opens up the show with a promo talking about how in just 3 weeks he will go head to head with NWA World Champion Sting for the Championship at Clash of the Champions. Until then he wants to keep his ring skills fresh so he can make sure that beating Sting will be an easy task. Flair continues to talk and lays out an open challenge for anyone in the back to face him in next weeks main event on WCW Saturday Night. Flair begins to leave until music hits that surprises WCW Fans as Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat returns to WCW and faces off with Flair as we cut to commercial break!

The Rock N Roll Express defeated WCW Tag Team Champions Doom by countout in 8:13 after Gibson and Morton hit Ron Simmons with a double dropkick sending him out of the ring. Simmons and Butch Reed would leave ringside after this which resulted in the loss via count out.

WCW United States Champion Lex Luger and Vader got into a backstage argument when Luger was being interviewed by Missy Hyatt. Luger was talking about how proud he was to be United States Champion and can't wait to compete against some of the new competitors in World Championship Wrestling. Vader interrupted the segment and told Luger that he can't be beaten and would love for him to be the "new competitor" that takes his belt. Luger tells Vader that he can have his chance next week on WCW Saturday Night.

"Dr Death" Steve Williams and Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy each make there WCW Debuts as they took on Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers. The Miracle Violence Connection made quick work of Armstrong/Smothers as Williams finished off Armstrong with his Running Powerslam at 2:12

After the match Williams and Gordy grab microphones and say they are the toughest team that has ever competed in WCW. Gordy and Williams promise they can make quick work of teams like Doom, The Rock N Roll Express, The York Foundation and especially those wannabe tough guys The Steiner Brothers.

Michael Hayes picks up a win against the debuting Scott Hall after Hayes manager Diamond Dallas Page distracted the referee allowing Page's other clients the One Man Gang and Vinnie Vegas to come into the ring and double chokeslam Scott Hall at 6:47.

Post-match Diamond Dallas Page grabs the microphone and tells the crowd that himself, Hayes, Vegas and Gang are now known as the Diamond Exchange and they will be moving all of the Diamonds, gold and silver in WCW from this point forward.

The Steiner Brothers are shown talking about how they aren't intimidated by Gordy and Williams. If they want a fight bad enough then they have the perfect place for it at the Clash of the Champions.

Stan Hansen defeated Dustin Rhodes with a Lariat in 7:40 after a hot (But quick) back and forth contest with the young Rhodes getting in way more offense than one would expect from the rookie Rhodes.

Post-match Hansen continues to beatdown Dustin until "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes emerges from the back and rushes the ring. Dustin is dazed but standing in the middle of the ring as Hansen is about to charge him to hit another lariat. Dusty slides into the ring and pleads with Hansen not to do it. Hansen beings to hit the rope and as he comes off to hit the Lariat... Dusty Rhodes pushes his son Dustin out of the way and takes the Lariat from Hansen himself! Hansen leaves ringside as Dustin comes to and checks on his fallen father.

Brian Pillman defeated Bobby Eaton in the Semi-Main Event of the evening following an Air Pillman in 12:05.

Sting defeated Arn Anderson in 22:58 with a Diving Crossbody in an incredible back and forth TV Main Event!

Post match Ric Flair stands on the stage as Sting celebrates in the ring until... out of nowhere Larry Zybysko, Paul Ordnorff and Paul E. Dangerously enter into the ring and jump Sting from behind. Zybysko and Ordnorff continue to put the boots to Sting as Flair watches from the stage. Zybysko and Ordnorff pick Sting up and nail him a vicious Spike Piledriver as Dangerously grabs the microphone. Dangerously waves to Ric Flair and smiles as he begins to talk "Everyone should thank Ric for what they have just witnessed as we have been hired to take out Sting in order to insure that Ric is the soon to be crowned NWA World Champion. I was approached and told to find two of the toughest and meanest men in wrestling by Ric himself in order to take Sting out so that championship would be easy to secure. Well Ric, I sure did find me two Mercenaries? Didn't I?".... Heyman drops the microphone as Flair looks shocked at what is going on in the ring as WCW Saturday Night comes to an end!!!

I didn't want to let Gang go but didn't really have anything for him so I figured having him and Nash team and having Hayes as the centerpiece of the group would be fun stuff. I'm definitely going to start evolving Hall's character though and he is definitely going to be pushed up the ladder/it's far from over with him and the Diamond Exchange.

Appreciate the compliment. Will have Main Event up sometime on Monday. I'm off to run my real wrestling show tomorrow haha. The first few shows are just recaps kind of deal leading up into Clash of the Champions/the office backlash from some of Bischoff's booking choices since he's well... Eric Bischoff haha

The show begins with Alexandra York cutting a promo about how her team of Michael Wallstreet and Terrence Taylor couldn't be beaten and an open challenge has been issued to any team in the back. Out walks two young men with blonde hair and golden tights... the two men enter the ring and Taylor grabs the microphone and mocks them saying "We wanted real WCW Wrestlers not the local talent they pay to make us look good"... one of the men grabs the microphone and explains "we want to make a name for ourselves tonight on Main Event and the best way would be to pin one of you clowns in the middle of the ring"... Taylor looks shocked and asked for the names of the two men... "My name is Shane Douglas" says the first one who had done the talking so far... "My name is Chris Jericho" explained the other young man. Taylor and Wallstreet look at each other and laugh as Main Event gets started with some tag team action.

Chris Jericho and Shane Douglas defeated The York Foundation in a shocking upset win after Douglas dropkicked Terrence Taylor causing him to knock Wallstreet off the apron and then get rolled up by Shane Douglas at 9:17

Post-match the York Foundation is irate and begin to beatdown the young team of Douglas and Jericho with Alexandra York looking on disappointed.

Brad Armstrong defeated Arn Anderson in 13:03 with a Russian Leg Sweep in a huge upset win. Anderson and Armstrong had a hard fought back and forth battle with Anderson still being worn out from his encounter with Sting from Saturday Night!

A quick promo reel is shown with Dustin Rhodes talking about the heinous actions of Stan Hansen, Scott Hall swearing revenge on the Diamond Exchange, Rock N Roll Express laying down a challenge for the WCW Tag Team Championships and Ric Flair saying he has no clue what Paul E Dangerously and the "Mercenaries" are talking about and that if he wanted rid of Sting he has 3 other Horsemen that would gladly take care of him!!!

WCW Saturday Night Week 2 January 1991

In front of 17,000 Fans

TV Rating: 3.18 (Up from last weeks 2.98)

WCW Saturday Night opens up with The Four Horsemen of Ric Flair, Barry Windham, Arn Anderson and Sid Vicious approaching the ring. Flair starts the interview up by stating that the Horsemen have been through a bit of a rough patch as of late... such as Arn losing to a lower level guy like Brad Armstrong on Main Event just six days ago. Arn looks taken aback by Flair's comment and tells him "it was an honest mistake. I was still recovering from trying to take out Flair for you on Saturday Night.. only for you to hire Non Horsemen to take care of Horseman business!"... Flair looks taken aback and replies with "Arn, I didn't hire Ordnorff and Zybysko to take out Sting. I have three men in this ring with me who are more than capable of taking Sting out."... Arn replies with "Ric, No offense but Dangerously said your name on multiple occasions"... Barry and Sid grab Ric and Arn and attempt to settle them down. Barry grabs the mic from Arn as Flair and Arn both look upset... "Ric, you and Arn have some issues to work out and you have Steamboat tonight. We are all Horsemen here and we need to continue to act like such... Boys bring it in and lets put up those four fingers!"... The Horsemen hold up the four fingers as Saturday Night kicks off with a bang!

Lex Luger and Vader opened the show up with an intense match for the WCW United States title. Luger came in with a bit more confidence than he really needed but Vader came in hungry and surprised Luger quite a bit during the opening affair with stiff strikes and some surprising athletic moves. Luger would fire back in the latter half of the match and show why he has been a championship contender since his arrival in WCW. Luger would eventually be cornered by Vader who would get disqualified for repeatedly striking Luger in the corner past the referees five count!

Lex Luger retained the United States title against Vader by disqualification at 9:17

Dusty Rhodes is shown backstage swearing that he will get revenge on Stan Hansen for the Lariat he gave him last week/what he attempted to do to Dustin!

The Steiner Brothers are about to cut an interview backstage when Gordy and Williams brutally attack both men from behind... Gordy starts yelling "See you boys at the Clash!"

Doom were in action against Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers. The WCW Tag Team Champions looked strong against Smothers and Armstrong and made quick work of them after Simmons hit Smothers with a Flying Shoulder Block!

Doom defeated Armstrong and Smothers in 3:32

Ricky Steamboat is shown warming up backstage for his match with Ric Flair... Barry Windham walks by and notices him. Windham begins to talk "You know everyone is excited for you to be taking on Flair tonight and I'm going to watch it closely... because as of right now I myself would like a shot at Sting's NWA Championship and as of right now you seem like the man I need to pin to start that climb"... Steamboat tells Windham "I'm not booked at the Clash just yet so lets do me vs. you"... Windham agrees and the match is set!

Terrence Taylor and Chris Jericho had a singles match. Alexandra York came to the ring after Jericho had entered and presented the mathematical chance of Jericho winning the bout. Jericho kind of laughed it off and the match began. Jericho and Taylor had a pretty athletic technical bout that took off quickly. At one point Jericho had Taylor down and went for a middle rope moonsault on Taylor... Taylor had popped up though which caused Jericho to miss the moonsault... Jericho then sold up enough just for Taylor to hit a Sunset Flip on him to get the win over the talented rookie!

Terry Taylor defeated Chris Jericho in 5:05

Stan Hansen discusses lariating Dusty Rhodes and apologizes for his actions... because that lariat was meant for Dustin!!

Dustin Rhodes and Michael Hayes were up next as Saturday Night rolled on. Rhodes and Hayes presented a hard hitting southern style match with Rhodes getting in a surprising amount of offense on the veteran Hayes. Hayes was able to use his experience to his advantage and was looking to put away Rhodes with a DDT when suddenly Scott Hall's entrance music hit... Hall then began to walk toward the ring... this allowed Rhodes enough time to hook Hayes for a Bulldog and pick up the surprising win!

Dustin Rhodes defeated Michael Hayes in 11:23

Post-match Hall grabs a microphone and begins to talk "Hey yo, Diamond Dallas... I guess you like having people interfere in matches to make your Diamond Exchange brings home the gold... well today they didn't bring home anything but a big fat L. So lets do this... your big man and your bigger man aren't doing anything on Main Event... neither am I... bring your two monsters and I'll have a partner to take them on!!!"

Larry Zybysko, Paul Ordnorff and Paul E. Dangerously enter the arena with Paul and Larry ready to compete... Dangerously begins to speak when suddenly the music of Brian Pillman hits... Pillman enters the arena alone with a microphone "I hear that an open challenge exists. I need to get something off my chest. What you two did to Sting last week was wrong and don't get me wrong... Sting is my friend but I would be out here to stand up for anyone who gets surprise attacked from behind and ambushed by two goons!"... Dangerously cuts Pillman off "well Brian that's great and all but we have two experienced wrestlers and you have yourself... a little rookie that could... I don't think this will take to long for us to take you..."... Dangerously is cut off by the music of Brad Armstrong... Armstrong enters the ring and shakes Pillman's hand... Brad grabs the mic "Two of us and two of you... let's do this"

The Mercenaries took on Brian Pillman and Brad Armstrong in the Semi Main Event of the evening. Although this was the first time either team had teamed up together... The Mercenaries flowed incredibly well as a team and looked like they had been teaming for years. Armstrong and Pillman flowed together as a team as well but the Mercenaries were able to keep them grounded intermittently throughout the match with Brian Pillman taking a good amount of the punishment... Pillman was eventually able to duck a double clothesline attempt from Paul and Larry and hit a dropkick on both men and tag into Brad... Brad would come in like a house of fire and clean house on both men... Brad would start to climb the top turnbuckle to jump off onto Paul but Larry would quickly distract the referee which allowed ARN ANDERSON to quickly run down to ringside and push Brad Armstrong off of the turnbuckle... this allows Ordnorff to hook a Piledriver on Armstrong and Zybysko to come off with the spike for the win!

The Mercenaries defeated Brad Armstrong and Brian Pillman in 12:40

Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat had a match like Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat would have. Flair and Steamboat put on a clinic that went well over 17 minutes to close out the show. Dangerously, Ordnorff and Zybysko stayed at ringside and took sets by commentary to watch Flair's match to the confusion of the crowd/Ricky Steamboat. Flair would end up getting the win with his Figure Four Leglock in the late part of the match!

Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat at 17:20 via pinfall

The Mercenaries get into the ring to congratulate Ric after the match and put the boots to Steamboat... Flair comes to and tells them "Guys cut it out"... Dangerously grabs the microphone "Ric... you told us to do this. Your last phone call with me explicitly said... attack both of us"... Flair looks on confused and says "Both of us?"... Ordnorff blindsides Flair with a clothesline and begins to stomp at him as Zybysko chokes out Steamboat... Larry stops attacking Steamboat and tells Paul "Pick him up"... Arn Anderson, Barry Windham and Sid Vicious make way down ringside and look to rescue Flair before Dangerously grabs the microphone and says "IF ANY OF YOU THREE TAKE ANOTHER STEP THEN WE SPIKE HIM WITH THE PILEDRIVER"... All 3 men back up as Orndnorff has Flair hooked... WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE STING emerges from the crowd and grabs Dangerously from behind and yells at Ordnorff who had yet to see him... Sting yells at Larry and Paul "Drop him!!!"... Larry and Paul quickly unhook Flair and stare down Sting... Flair uses his last bit of energy to double low blow Larry and Paul as Sting drops Dangerously with the Scorpion Death Drop!!! The Horsemen arrive into the ring and dispose of Ordnorff and Zybysko as Flair and Sting stand off with each other. Flair offers Sting a handshake and Sting accepts it as the Horsemen have come face to face with Sting yet again to end WCW Saturday Night!!!

Chris Jericho and Shane Douglas open up Main Event with an interview segment with Missy Hyatt. Hyatt claims that the two young men have become overnight breakout stars since getting the upset win over the York Foundation. Douglas grabs the microphone from Hyatt and talks about how much of a pleasure it is for him and Chris to be in World Championship Wrestling and that they are well on the way to being the breakout stars of the 90s here in WCW! Michael Wallstreet comes out with Alexandra York and tells Douglas that them being the new stars on the block isn't going to last very long. Wallstreet and Douglas then open up the show with...

Michael Wallstreet begins to brawl with Shane Douglas as the referee calls for the bell. A little bit more of a faster paced brawl than the technical match Jericho/Taylor put on the other night. Douglas stays on top of Wallstreet throughout the course of the match and gives him a run for his money but Alexandra York provides a distraction allowing Wallstreet to hit a Flying Lariat for the win

Michael Wallstreet defeated Shane Douglas in 7:20 via pinfall

Post-match Alexandra York grabs a microphone and tells Douglas/Jericho that she has them officially booked against her York Foundation at The Clash of the Champions!!

Scott Hall reveals El Gigante as his tag team partner against One Man Gang and Vinnie Vegas which led to a tag team match. Hall was able to fight off Gang throughout the course of the match with Gigante keeping Vegas away. Eventually the referee lost control of the match and called for a double disqualification.

Hall and Gigante drew with Vegas and Gang at 7:51

Brad Armstrong gets interviewed by Missy Hyatt about his win over Arn Anderson.. before he can say to much Sid Vicious enters the arena and explains the Armstrong's win over Arn was a complete fluke and if he wants to see what a real Horsemen can do in the ring... then he need not look further than facing off with Sid Vicious... right now... IN THE MAIN EVENT!!!

Brad Armstrong and Sid Vicious put on a solid main event with Armstrong getting the best of Vicious at first with a combination of speed/technical prowess but Vicious is eventually able to ground Armstrong with his power and size. Vicious dominates Armstrong throughout most of the match but Brad is eventually able to mount a comeback and go up top for a missile dropkick that knocks Sid off of his feet. At this point Arn Anderson runs down to the ring and drags the referee to the outside and floors him. Arn then slides brass knuckles into the ring to Sid to hit Brad with but Brad kicks them to the outside to Arn... while doing this Sid Vicious gets back up and hammers Brad in the back... Sid then grabs Brad to let Arn hit him with the brass knuckles but BRAD ducks! Sid is out cold! Brad then dropkicks Arn off the apron while the referee comes to and BRAD ARMSTRONG PINS SID VICIOUS!!!!

Brad Armstrong defeats Sid Vicious by pinfall in 11:32

After the matchSid Vicious and Arn Anderson come to begin to argue back and forth with each other until Barry Windham comes down to ringside to diffuse the situation... Paul E. Dangerously and the Mercenaries then arrive on the scene and ask Sid, Arn and Barry why in the world would Ric Flair agree to team with Sting on next weeks episode of WCW Saturday Night and not a Horsemen like Sid, Arn or Barry. All three men look on irritated by the situation until Paul ends the promo by saying "Because it's exactly what Ric wants!"
