UFC: Past Meeting Present

Recommended Posts

At the end of the 1980's and into the 1990's, the world of boxing was beginning to fall by the wayside with many boxing fans. With legendary names, such as “Sugar” Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns retiring and the defeat of boxing's next great Mike Tyson, and his subsequent arrest and jail time, the world was looking for its next combat sport to arise. However, it wouldn't be until 1993, that they would get the “Ultimate Fighting Championship”

Art Davie, a business executive and entrepreneur, proposed a new idea to Don King, world famous boxing promoter and “lover of money.” That idea was an eight-man single-elimination tournament called "War of the Worlds". The tournament was inspired by the Gracies in Action video-series produced by the Gracie family of Brazil which featured Gracie Jiu-Jitsu students defeating martial-arts masters of various disciplines such as karate, kung fu and kickboxing. The tournament would feature martial artists from different disciplines facing each other in no-holds-barred combat to determine the best martial art and would aim to replicate the excitement of the matches Davie had seen on the videos. Don King, a noted boxing promoter, as well as an agent to many of boxing's top talents, agreed to act as the event's creative director and promoter, however under different rules.

Don King saw this a very wise business decision, but he also saw the backlash from this, as many would call it in their early years, barbaric sport. So, Don King set up a meeting with many legends of many different martial-arts styles and a Nevada State Athletic Commission representative to set up the rules of, what was being called, Mixed Martial-Arts.

While Art Davie proposed a deal that would set up a tournament to determine what was the best style in the world in a no-holds-barred capacity, these new rules would actually blend together almost all styles of martial-arts to give no one man a single advantage, unless that man was really well rounded. These rules are seen as a “bible” like article that was the beginning of the sport that would take over the world of combat sports and overtake boxing as the greatest combat sport of all time.

The rules were as followed:

-The fight will have three 5 minute rounds for a non title match, and five 5 minute rounds for a championship match up.

-All competitors must fight in approved pants, shorts, or trunks, without shoes or any other sort of foot padding. Shirts or upper body gis are not allowed. Fighters must use approved light gloves (4-6 ounces) that allow fingers to grab. A mouth guard and protective cup are also required and are checked by a State Athletic Committee official before being allowed to enter the cage/ring.

-A fight can end with a knockout, submission, referee stoppage or judge decision at the end of the three/five rounds. The ten-point must system is in effect for all fights. Three judges score each round and the winner of each receives ten points, the loser nine points or fewer. If the round is even, both fighters receive ten points. The fewest points a fighter can receive is 7.

-While more classes would be added, the UFC will start with only 3. The Heavyweight (206+ lbs), the Light Heavyweight (186-205 lbs), and the Middleweight Classes (100-185) classes.

-Additional rules of the fight:

Holding or grabbing the fence

Holding opponent’s shorts or gloves

Butting with the head

Biting or spitting at an opponent

Hair pulling

Fish-hooking

Intentionally placing a finger into any orifice, or into any cut or laceration of your opponent

Eye gouging of any kind

Groin attacks of any kind

Downward pointing of elbow strikes

Small joint manipulation

Strikes to the spine or back of the head

Heel kicks to the kidney

Throat strikes of any kind, including, without limitation, grabbing the trachea

Clawing, pinching, twisting the flesh or grabbing the clavicle

Kicking the head of a grounded opponent

Kneeing the head of a grounded opponent

Stomping of a grounded fighter

The use of abusive language in fighting area

Any unsportsmanlike conduct that causes an injury to opponent

Attacking an opponent during a break

Attacking an opponent who is under the care of the referee

Timidity (avoiding contact, consistent dropping of mouthpiece, or faking an injury)

Interference from a mixed martial artist's corner man

Throwing an opponent out of the ring or caged area

Flagrant disregard of the referee’s instructions

Spiking an opponent to the canvas on his or her head or neck

Attacking an opponent after the bell has sounded the end of the period of unarmed combat

When a foul is charged, the referee in their discretion may deduct one or more points as a penalty. If a foul incapacitates a fighter, then the match may end in a disqualification if the foul was intentional, or a "no contest" if unintentional. If a foul causes a fighter to be unable to continue later in the bout, it ends with a technical decision win to the injured fighter if the injured fighter is ahead on points, otherwise it is a technical draw.

With the introduction of these rules, fighters from all over the world were itching to get in on this new form of combat sports. Everyone from the world of professional wrestling, boxing, amateur wrestling, jiu-jitsu, sambo, sumo, and many more were wanting to get in on this fight league to see who was the best in the world!

While it would be a few months until the card was announced, many were interested in seeing what would become of this newest sport to grace us.

[As you should have guessed, this is my attempt at a Dawn of MMA dynasty, however I am throwing a bit of “As Real As It Gets” mod in this as well, but all with a twist with the rules of present being put with the UFC when it was first beginning.]

Just Announced!

UFC 1: Heavyweight Grand Prix's card was just announced at a mega press conference held by Don King and Art Davie. The card features many relative unknowns to the fighting world, but members of their respective martial-arts styles should know them perfectly. We will run down the tournament brackets and give you a preview of each fighter for the tournament.

Before the matches were announced, however, Don King let us in on the format of the UFC 1, 2, and 3 and their Grand Prix styled tournaments. UFC 1 will feature only the Heavyweight division in an 8 man tournament to decide the first ever UFC Heavyweight division Champion. The winner will hold the title and face the winner of the next Heavyweight Grand Prix, and so on. Likewise for the Light Heavyweight and Middleweight Grand Prix which will be held at 2 and 3 respectively.

Round 1, Match 1

Teila Tuli v. Zane “Nasty” Frazier

In the first round match-up, we get to see the real size threat in this division as Sumo takes on Karate. Teila Tuli is a Sumo wrestler from Hawaii, weighing in at well over 400 pounds, not only was he one of the heaviest Sumo wrestlers in his divisions, he is also the heaviest fighter in this tournament. The former Sumo champion looks to take the crown as the first UFC Heavyweight Champion.

His opponent is 'Nasty' Zane Frazier, a fourth degree black belt in American Kenpo Karate and was the winner of the California, United States and North American karate championships in 1984 before becoming the international karate champion in 1987 and again in 1990. After making the transition to kickboxing, he won the WKF United States super heavyweight title in 1993. He will be looking to be a 'giant killer' in this fight on his way to the UFC Heavyweight Championship.

Round 1, Match 2

Kurt Angle vs. Patrick Smith

This next match up will feature Tae Kwon Do and wrestling. Kurt Angle, a very decorated wrestler, straight out of college, was chosen to come to the UFC after being denied entry into the Olympic wrestling teams for undisclosed reasons, he is a former two-time National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I champion, national runner-up in 1991, and a three-time NCAA Division I All-American. In addition, Angle was the 1987 USA Junior Freestyle champion, a two-time USA Senior Freestyle champion, and the 1988 USA International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles Junior World Freestyle champion. He will be a top contender to take the UFC Heavyweight Championship.

Patrick Smith, however, is a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and also holds a black belt in Hapkido, Kenpō Karate, and Tang Soo Do. In 1993, Smith was ranked #1 as a Super Heavyweight kickboxer in the United States and held a ranking of #5 internationally. He is looking to take The UFC Heavyweight Championship and hold onto it for a very long time.

Round 1, Match 3

Ken Shamrock vs. Kevin Rosier

Ken Shamrock is an explosive grappler with excellent speed, power, agility, and incredible physical strength. His first taste of mixed martial arts came following the exodus of his mentors Minoru Suzuki and Masakatsu Funaki from a Japanese professional wrestling promotion to found one of the formative Japanese shootfighting promotions, Pancrase. He will return to America to compete to be the first UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Kevin Rosier spent the majority of his fighting career in kickboxing where he held a record of 66 wins, all by knockout, and 8 losses. He was also the 3x WKA World Super Heavyweight Champion and ISKA North American Super Heavyweight Champion. He is a substantially heavier fighter than his opponent, coming in at 265 lbs, if he can stand up and kick box with his opponent, he will take the UFC Heavyweight Title home.

Round 1, Match 4

Art Jimmerson v. Gerard Gordeau

Art Jimmerson is boxer who competed at super middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight. As an amateur, Jimmerson was the 1983 National Golden Gloves Middleweight champion. With an impressive record of 29 wins and 5 losses and ranked nationally by the IBF as #10 in the Cruiserweight Division world wide, will his boxing skills be enough to take on all the other styles in this competition and win the UFC Heavyweight Championship?

Gerard Gordeau is a practitioner of Dutch savateur and karateka,. He is the 1991 World Champion Savate and holder of the Dutch Champion Kyokushin Karate title for 8 consecutive years. He will look to take out his opponents and win the UFC Heavyweight Championship.

This event will take place on Saturday, Week 4 of November 1993 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tickets are already preselling at very large numbers from people just wanting to know what this new exciting sport is all about. We will see where this sports stand when we come to you live from Caesar's Palace in Vegas.

[On a really brief side note, I am having some issues using imgur to upload pictures up to the site with... does anyone else have this problem or is only because I am so low in post count?]

UFC 1: Heavyweight Grand Prix

The UFC is glad to welcome you to the first ever UFC mixed martial arts showcase! Before we begin the show tonight we are greeted with a backstage airing of what happened the day before the event at the live press conference, where the fighters were weighed in for the last time before the fights begin. And here are the results:

Art Jimmerson (215lbs) v. Gerard Gordeau (216lbs)

Ken Shamrock (225lbs) v. Kevin Rosier (265lbs)

Kurt Angle (239lbs) v. Patrick Smith (225lbs)

Teila Tuli (430lbs) v. Zane Frasier (230lbs)

And after some brief introductions with our announce teams of Bruce Beck and NFL Hall of Famer, Jim Brown and our ringside correspondent Jeff Blatnick, we get an amazing shot of the crowds and we see some of the fans have brought signs with them, a lot of signs asking “Where's Tyson?” and others wanting other various fighters to show up, however, we are looking like we are ready to go as our first match is already in the ring.

Teila Tuli v. 'Nasty' Zane Frasier

The beginning of this match up is just terrible with the two fighters just throwing wild punches and gassing themselves out very early, until the 2:30 to go in the fight, while Frasier is locked against the cage, he dodges a wild strike from Tuli and lands a CRUSHING blow to the right side of the face on Tuli knocking him completely out and hands still out in the air... Many in the crowd went from booing the slow pace to standing in awe as one of the most impressive knockouts in the first ever fight proves that is sport is not a joke.

Winner by knockout at 2:48 of Round 1: 'Nasty' Zane Frasier.

Jeff Blatnick interviews Zane Frasier after the fight, and Zane states that he knows these fights were dangerous and knows that his martial art is the greatest of them all and he thinks he proved it there. As he was being interviewed, we can see in the background that Tuli is being helped out of the cage, and also hooked up to oxygen... we wish Tuli a quick recover and hope to see him again in the UFC. Our next fight is on its way to the ring.

'The Olympian' Kurt Angle v. Patrick Smith

Almost immediately Kurt Angle comes in and uses his world class Olympic wrestling ability and takes down Smith, leaving Smith grasping. Smith is in a lot of trouble as Angle begins to rain the punches down on him, serving several huge shots. Smith does do a decent job of at least deflecting or covering up against the shots as he gets to his back, but Angle looks for submission, but instead Angle starts delivering blows to Smith, who can no longer protect himself as the ref jumps in and calls for the bell just before the bell sounds for the end of round 1.

Winner by TKO via Strikes at 4:58 of Round 1: 'The Olympian' Kurt Angle.

Jeff Blatnick grabs a few quick words from Angle about his win tonight, he says he is here to win tonight and after what happened with the Olympics team, he is here to proof himself as the greatest wrestler and fighter that ever lived. Our next match is in the ring now.

Ken Shamrock v. Kevin Rosier

Rosier is using his kick boxing style and keeping Shamrock from going in as the start the first round. After some testing each other with punches, Shamrock uses a flurry of punches and dives into a clinch with Rosier, but it comes to nothing, as they break apart and circle each other for the remainder of the round, much to the chagrin of the live attendance. Round 2 is much of the same, as Shamrock attempts a couple of take downs but to no effect. Round 2 ends with not much action, much of the crowd are booing both fighters, which has seemed to upset Shamrock, as he comes in heavy in round 3. However, his attempt is not seen well as Rosier immediately sprawls out of the take down and stands over Shamrock wanting him to stand. The remainder of the fight sees the fighters circle each other as the crowd boos very loudly, wanting more action like the first two fights, as we go to the judges for our first decision of the night.

Judge #1 scores it 29-28 Rosier, Judge #2 scores it 29-28 Shamrock, and Judge #3 scores it 29-28 Shamrock.

Winner via Split Decision: Ken Shamrock.

Jeff Blatnick catches up with Shamrock as he is almost storming to the back to get a few words with him about his win. He said he went in there to win, plan and simple, and if the fans didn't like they could kiss his ass. When asked about if the fans booing him and Rosier during there match did anything to take him out of the zone, he said yes, and he almost made a mistake because of it. Our next match is ready to go.

Art Jimmerson v. Gerard Gordeau

Much of the first round between these two is spend in a dirty boxing position trading blows, and circling, again making the crowd very restless and wanting more action. However, in the second round things begin to pick up as the fighters went right at each other, throwing wild punches, much to delight of the fans. Art Jimmerson gets under a wild right of Gordeau and smashes him with a flurry of punches that knock him to the ground and as Jimmerson continues relentlessly, the ref has no decision other than to stop the fight as Gordeau can no longer guard himself.

Winner via TKO via Strikes at 3:32 of Round 2: Art Jimmerson

Jeff Blatnick catches up with Jimmerson, who is happy with that win, and ready to do more of the same against Shamrock. We catch up with the live broadcast team as Bruce Beck takes us through our next two fights with Zane Frasier taking on Kurt Angle and Ken Shamrock taking on Art Jimmerson as our next match is getting set up in the ring.

'Nasty' Zane Frasier v. 'The Olympian' Kurt Angle

Angle and Frasier feel each other in the opening moments of the match as the fans cheer on Angle, wanting him to win this match. As they trade a messy set of punches, Angle shoots in and takes down Frasier. Frasier unable to do anything on the ground is overcome by Angle, who locks in an Achilles Lock and win the match in a time of 3:45.

Winner via Submission by Achilles Lock in 3:45 of Round 1: Kurt Angle.

Blatnick again, catches up with Angle, who tells us that he has not even broken a sweat yet and can not wait for his next match up. Our next match is ready to go.

Art Jimmerson v. Ken Shamrock

Ken Shamrock is in no hurry for this fight to continue as he aggressively seeks and obtains a take down against the boxer Jimmerson. With Jimmerson having no where to go in the submission, Shamrock locks in a toe hold and it is all over as Jimmerson taps to the shoot fighter.

Winner via Submission due to a toe hold at 2:29 of Round 1: Ken Shamrock.

With that win, it sets up a very interesting match up in our main event and tournament final as Ken Shamrock takes on 'The Olympian' Kurt Angle. Jeff Blatnick is lucky to catch up with Shamrock as he getting a couple of moments of rest before the main event. Blatnick asks if he is feeling tired at all, after competing in a full three round match and competing just moments ago. Shamrock says his body is wanting to shut down, but he will not allow it and he will be ready for Angle when they step in that cage.

Our main event is here...

[TITLE FIGHT]

[uFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP]

'The Olympian' Kurt Angle v. Ken Shamrock

The match starts off with something you don't see every day, Angle rushes across the ring and throws a leaping front kick at Shamrock that is just out of range but catches Shamrock by surprise. After a quick testing of one another, Angle shoots in for a take down, but is caught by Shamrock in a guillotine like submission. Angle quickly gets out of it however, and the match is going to the ground. Angle lands a vicious knee to the ribs of Shamrock and he winces in pain which allows Angle to land some heavy hammer like face shots, which forces the ref to jump in and stop the fight as Shamrock may have internal damage!

Winner via TKO due to strikes at 3:17 in Round 1 and NEW UFC Heavyweight Champion: Kurt Angle.

Jeff Blatnick jumps in the ring to catch up with the winner and new UFC Heavyweight Champion, Kurt Angle. Angle says he is very honored to be the first champion in the UFC and will wear this badge with honor, he says the Olympics may not have been there for him, but the UFC has become his new home and he will make the rest of the United States see that this is a sport that will only rise in popularity. He thanks Ken Shamrock for a hell of a scrap there and welcomes him a rematch for the title.

[AFTER FIGHT PRESS CONFERENCE]

-Don King announces that UFC 1 was a resounding success and we will see more than just three cards in the future, he announces that we have already signed on with major PPV providers all over the world for at least ten full fight cards.

-When asked if anyone with more of a name will be battling at the next show, he announces that he has signed a deal with two huge names in boxing as well as two very famous Jiu-Jutsu families in Brazil, as well as a “Hollywood Superstar” will be competing next month. There will be a press conference later in the month announcing the card for the Saturday, Week 4 of December show.

-Kurt Angle said that he would be honored to give Shamrock another shot at the gold, but it would have to be after he heals up, the medical exam after the fight shows that Angle has an elbow injury and will be out for the next couple of months, but should be ready to go for the next heavyweight grand prix.

-Don King also announce three extra money bonuses tonight, on top of the fighters regular pay. One for Fight of the Night, which will go to amazing performance of Ken Shamrock and Kurt Angle in the main event. The Knockout of the Night Award will go to Zane Frasier for his amazing knockout of Teila Tuli, who we can report is medically fine. And submission of the night goes to Ken Shamrock for his amazing toe hold submission win against Art Jimmerson.
