WWF '87: A New Power Rises

Recommended Posts

Backstory: It is March 1987, Wrestlemania III is right around the corner. WWF head honcho Vince McMahon was contemplating a major change. He wanted to step back from the booking and talent management part of the company so he can focus more on production and global distribution while spending more time being a father and husband. He wanted someone to run the booking of the shows and the hiring and firing of talent. He had quite a few people in the company to choose from: Pat Patterson, Jay Strongbow, Jack Lanza, Gorilla Monsoon were some of his top guys that he could have easily turned to, especially Pat and Gino. Pat was excellent at booking matches and Gino was a good company man and popular with the boys backstage. However, Vince wanted to think outside the box.

Vince wanted someone who was not previously associated with the wrestling business. He wanted someone who knew the product, was genuinely passionate about the product, but someone who had a strong personality and that wouldn't bend with the massive egos in the locker room. With the help of his wife Linda, Vince began taking applications. People far and wide sent in their applications. It was the standard fare, they asked for education, previous employment, etc. However, the main part of the application was an essay. Applicants were asked to write about what they know about the WWF and why they think they would be able to handle the day-to-day booking and talent operations for a national company.

After the fruitless days of going through thousands of applicants, it came down to two people, a young guy just starting to break into the business from Scarsdale, NY named Paul Heyman and recent college graduate from Indianapolis, IN named Max Power. Vince met with Mr. Heyman, liked his drive, but didn't really care too much for his vision. Now it was time for his interview with Mr. Power.

<span>http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/KingofOldSchool/Generic12_zpsbaeec464.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: *extends hand* Welcome, Max Power! That's a strong name! Ha ha!</p><p> </p><p>

Power: *shakes McMahon's hand* Thank you, Mr. McMahon.</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Mr.? Who do you think I am? Some evil boss?! Ha ha ha ha! Call me Vince, dammit!</p><p> </p><p>

Power: Hahaha. Sure thing, Vince.</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Now that we got all of the bullshit introductions out of the way, now onto why we're here. What made you apply for this job?</p><p> </p><p>

Power: Well as you probably noticed from my application, I am a recent college graduation from Indiana University where I majored in business. I grew up watching wrestling. My mom took me as a kid to see Dick The Bruiser's WWA promotion quite often. Then later I started watching the AWA and of course, the WWF. So I think I am quite familiar with the on air personalities from most of the country. When I saw this job opportunity, I thought what better way to get my feet in the door in the business world than by working for a profession that I watched growing up over the years?</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: I can certainly state that we as a company plan to expand globally over the years. What you've witnessed in the last 3+ years is nothing compared to how I want the WWF to be viewed over the next 30 years and beyond. We want to change how the public views sports entertainment. My next question to you is, how do you want to present the characters we portray on TV?</p><p> </p><p>

Power: I look at sports entertainment as this, much like a movie, I think the WWF should cater to just about everyone. In a sense, I want our shows to be a buffet, if you will. Everyone has different tastes, so lets give the people a little bit of everything. </p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: What do you mean a little bit of "everything"?</p><p> </p><p>

Power: Well, it would be similar to what you're doing now. You have your larger than life guys like Hogan and Andre. Your technical, no frills types like Bret Hart and Tito Santana. You have your crazy personalities like Roddy Piper and Randy Savage. You have the pretty boys that can work, but also get the girls behind them like Ricky Martel and Ricky Steamboat. Then you have the gimmicks like Adrian Adonis, Demolition, and Harley Race. The overall idea, though, is to not be afraid have them mix it up with guys like Hogan and Andre. I think after a while, people will tire of seeing Hogan slay the big men.</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: What are you saying, to phase Hogan out of the spotlight?</p><p> </p><p>

Power: No. No. I'm talking about elevating others to Hogan's level. I want the perception to be that Hogan can be beaten by someone who may not be 6 foot 6 and weigh over 300lbs or bigger. I'm not saying it would be tomorrow or even this year, but my idea is to expand and give others the chance to be huge stars. Right now, it's 1 star with a big supporting cast. What I envision is multiple stars, but with a slightly smaller supporting cast. The only way that can happen is to eventually make Hogan a bit more vulnerable. Give him his own "kryptonite". </p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Interesting, but wouldn't that hurt Hogan's appeal? Our whole deal with him is that he is a big conquering hero, sorta like a real life god. If you make him vulnerable, then wouldn't that make him just like everyone else? That would hurt us since we've spent so much time and money building him up like this.</p><p> </p><p>

Power: That's the beauty of it though! You've had all of these villains spend the better part of 3 plus years finding a way to take Hogan down. Sure they've attacked him, cut him open, hurt his ribs, whatever. However, he always won in the end. Every superhero has their undeniable weakness. Nobody has yet to find Hogan's. Imagine if a Lex Luthor comes along and discovers it, uses it on Hogan, then tears him down. Boom! New star. Then, imagine a new hero comes along fighting this new villain and takes him down. Boom! New star. Hogan then comes back as good as ever.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Hmmmm. I understand where you're coming from, but I'm still unsure. I'm not even sure Hulk would like it. Good points though, it seems like you have this planned out. Now tell me. Do you have an idea what you do for Wrestlemania III?</p><p> </p><p>

Power: No, but that's because I'm looking towards Wrestlemania IV.</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Really? Why? We need to concentrate on Wrestlemania III first.</p><p> </p><p>

Power: I understand, Vince. However, if I get this job, Wrestlemania III is too close for me to really put my footprint on it. I figured I'd get started with the big main event for Wrestlemania IV. </p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Ha ha ha well I like your initiative. Tell me what you have planned, if you don't mind!</p><p> </p><p>

Power: Okay, but I'm going to whisper it to you, because I don't want anyone to know just in case.</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Alright. Tell me.</p><p> </p><p>

*Power whispers his plans for Wrestlemania IV in Vince's ear*</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Not bad. I don't know if it will draw as well as Hogan/Andre, but I think it would be suitable. Now how would you get to that match?</p><p> </p><p>

*Power whispers in Vince's ear*</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Interesting concept, Max. I like new ideas and that might work.</p><p> </p><p>

Power: I even have plans for beyond Wrestlemania IV for later that summer. Want to know?</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Ha ha ha you're full of ideas, kid. Let me have it!</p><p> </p><p>

*Power whispers in Vince's ear*</p><p> </p><p>

*Vince has a confused look on his face*</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Uh so....why is he involved and what is the angle for it?</p><p> </p><p>

Power: Well it is basically the huge angle that I hope to begin later this fall. It ties in to everything I whispered to you. I'll quietly tell you all of the major points to my planned storyline so you'll have a better understanding.</p><p> </p><p>

*Power spends the next 10 minutes silently talking to Vince*</p><p> </p><p>

*Vince spends a few minutes trying to find the words*</p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: ....are you ****ing crazy? </p><p> </p><p>

Power: No, not at all. </p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: Are you sure? You'd have to be batshit insane to try something like that. In fact, you'd have to have balls the size of grapefruits to do something like that.</p><p> </p><p>

Power: You can't make money if you aren't willing to go all out. </p><p> </p><p>

McMahon: You've got a point. I laid everything on the line with the first Wrestlemania. If that didn't succeed, we wouldn't be here today. I've also alienated myself from a lot of people in this business because I took a chance to go national instead of still being a territorial operation. So you know what, you got the job! I'm worried about the direction you want to go in, but I love your drive and determination. </p><p> </p><p>

You will have full control on booking and your talent hiring and firing. I trust that you will take this company above and beyond. Your office will be right next to mine and once we sign the paperwork and all of the legal shit, you can get right to work.</p>

Hayes is a better manager, but we have enough managers for the time being. Also, looking at the road agents and everything, I'm keeping everyone except Terry Garvin, he's gone.</p>

<p>Here a brief dirt sheet. </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="37274" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="font-size:18px;">The Wrasslin' Onlooker</span></p><p> By: Davey "Cheddar" Meltz</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> It has been a wild time since my last newsletter as the two biggest North American companies have shook up the wrestling world. First, we have the NWA buying out CWF. CWF's demise has been coming for quite some time now, but the NWA buying the company was a bit of a shock. Not much will probably come out of it, though.</p><p> </p><p> In the other big news item features the WWF. Vince McMahon has apparently stepped away from the creative/talent side of things to try to expand globally. If this is true, he will certainly be laughed out of Mexico and Japan since they actually take professional wrestling seriously. McMahon seemingly hired some unknown named Max Power to take over the creative/talent duties. Not much is known about him, but my sources say he does have a lot of money and isn't afraid to take risks. If he's anything like Vince Jr., get ready to see Bill Cosby at Wrestlemania III and Bobby Heenan to bump for him.</p><p> </p><p> It appears, though, that Power is looking to bring in a plethora of outside talent. What that means to the current roster? Well, it is rumored that the company is looking to at least double the roster size. Instead of having talent fly for double shots in different parts of the country on the same days, they want to have enough top talent to run multiple house shows in a day without running the talent ragged. On top of this, they are looking to get more TV time, possibly to help fit in all of the incoming talent on TV.</p><p> </p><p> While people have been tight lipped in Titan Land right now, it has been said they are looking at a bunch of young talent to use as Enhancement Talent with the idea that down the road, they might get built up to actual stars when they get more experience. The idea being, the pasty white fat jobbers you've seen over the years might become a thing of the past.</p><p> </p><p> In other roster moves, the WWF fired Johnny Valiant, Terry Garvin, Little Beaver, Little Tokyo, Lord Littlebrook, and The Haiti Kid. No word on who will manage The Dream Team, Demolition, and Dino Bravo. I would imagine Jimmy Hart could reunite with Valentine and managed Beefcake as well while someone like Bobby Heenan could manage Demolition and Slick could manage Bravo.</p><p> </p><p> Wrestlemania III from the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit, MI is a few weeks away and as of this time, only 4 matches have been announced. Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant for the WWF Title, Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat for the IC Title, Roddy Piper vs. Adrian Adonis in a Hair match, and Harley Race vs The Junk Food Dog in a Bowing match. Other matches will be announced, but has yet to be finalized as the new regime is reworking the undercard.</p><p> </p><p> Thanks for reading. Next week should be interesting with more matches added to Wrestlemania and possibly new information on hew hirings and firings.</p></div></blockquote>

You see, Curly Sue, you're coming out here, and I emphasize the phrase "coming out", prancing around with your flowers, your make up, and your pretty pink dresses trying to get into everyone's heads. Wrestlemania III, probably my last match ever, our hairs are on the line. Win, lose, or draw, I'm walking out of the Pontiac Silverdome. I'll be damned if I walk out a loser. You'll be back, though. Just imagine the embarrassment you'll suffer if your ppprrrettty blonde locks are lost. Me? I'm a REAL man and I don't give a damn if I'm bald. So ask yourself this, what would a man do if he has nothing to lose? <p>I just wanted to say I am enjoying this thus far and I will try to make picks for the next show. </p><p> </p><p>

I loved the Piper segment from your previous show with Adrian Adonis as his guest. I thought it was very well written.</p><p> </p><p>

Also I have to say I am a bit shocked that you had The Can-Am Connection go over Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik. I know in the database Nikolai and the Sheik are Uppermidcarders and Zenk and Martel are Midcarders, so that must have hurt Nikolai and the Sheik's popularity a bit especially seeing how they lost in five minutes.</p><p> </p><p>

As far as the Women's division goes, well I say keep it until Moolah's contract runs out then fire them all. If you go that route you can hire two more faces so that you have an even face/heel split.</p><p> </p><p>

Barry O. is more trouble than he is worth. I never renew his contract after the first month. If it makes Bob mad it makes him mad, because his brother is just a horrible person to deal with in the game.<img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Well Zenk and Martel are younger and have more upside, with all of the new talent I'm bringing in, Nikolai and Sheiky Baby aren't really a priority for me and they're the highest ranked heel team outside of The Dream Team.

That's what I'm planning on doing with the women. It looks like JCP is trying to start their own Women's Division as they already signed Wendi Richter and Joyce Grable. They are going to need them after I get done :D

Yeah I'm not keeping Barry O, just going to let heels destroy him before he leaves. Bob won't bother me too much if I have to put him in his place too. ;)

Here is the latest newsletter.

The Wrasslin' Onlooker

By: Davey "Cheddar" Meltz

Times are apparently changing in the WWF. Max Power's new found power has caused quite a stir in the wrestling world. Since our last newsletter, the WWF has signed approximately 30 new workers. This is a rough estimate, but it could definitely be more than that. From my sources, these workers are a mix of established guys and young workers who are unproven that will probably be among the crop of JTTS while they improve their skills.

While my source has been tight lipped about these signings, I can confirm that most of the country's major non-WWF workers have been contacted (yes, they are who you think). I can also confirm that both Dusty Rhodes and Lex Luger are under written contracts with Jim Crockett, so they will not be heading north any time soon. Also, Jerry Lawler was contacted, but was not interested at this time. Probably the biggest name has yet to accept or reject the contract offer, but would send shockwaves if he accepted.

With all of this being said, the following workers have been revealed to me as confirmed signings: Steven Regal, 2 Cold Scorpio, Brad Armstrong, Barry Horowitz, Dean Malenko, Jeff Jarrett, Sam Houston, Shane Douglas, Al Perez, and Al Snow. This is just the "bottom" talent the company has apparently signed. This probably means the end of the WWF tenure for guys like Omar Atlas, Barry Orton, and Outhouse Jack.

Some incidents happened at the TV tapings last week. Tom "MegaRoid" Magee got some heat on him for passing gas in the locker room. I don't know why a bunch of muscled up men would care about someone passing gas, I guess he hasn't paid enough "dues" in the business to pass gas. He's likely gone anyways, so it is all probably moot. Also, there was an altercation between Butch Reed and the Junkfood Dog. There was an altercation, which led to the Dog doing damage to Reed's rental car. I'm not sure what caused it, maybe Reed took the last cupcake in catering? JYD was lectured and was apparently apologetic about the incident and paid the rental car + donated money to charity.

In another incident, IC Champion Randy Savage got into it with some fans outside a show. Evidently two guys were making comments about Miss Elizabeth towards Savage and Savage, who is said to be overprotective of her, got in the fans faces. Savage was apparently talked to, but not much was done since he didn't touch the fans and with him being one of their top heels, it could be spun off as Savage just heeling it up.

Wrestlemania III from the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit, MI is a couple of weeks away and as of this time, 5 matches have been announced. Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant for the WWF Title, Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat for the IC Title, Roddy Piper vs. Adrian Adonis in a Hair match, Harley Race vs The Junk Food Dog in a Bowing match and newly added The Hart Foundation vs. The Can-Am Connection for the tag titles. Other matches will be announced, but has yet to be finalized as the new regime is reworking the undercard.

Thanks for reading. Next week should be interesting with more matches added to Wrestlemania and possibly new information on hew hirings and firings.
