I did not know that Haystacks Calhoun was still wrestling in the 1980's. My father always talked about seeing him at Jack Witchi's (As a fellow Rhode Islander I am sure you know what I am talking about) back in the 60's-70's.</p>

I remember the place. My dad used to set up the ring there when he was younger and became good friends with Jack's son, Billy. My dad, in the early '70s, had visitation rights and took myself and my two brothers there every Friday night. We were guaranteed seats 2 rows from the ring. My youngest brother was even brought back into the locker room one night. He met, and got an autograph picture of, Stan "The Man" Staziak and High Chief Peter Maivia, the Rock's granddad.

My dad, in the early '70s, had visitation rights and took myself and my two brothers there every Friday night. We were guaranteed seats 2 rows from the ring. My youngest brother was even brought back into the locker room one night. He met, and got an autograph picture of, Stan "The Man" Staziak and High Chief Peter Maivia, the Rock's granddad.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> I don't want to hijack thread but thank you for sharing that. My high school Brit. Lit. teacher was good friends with "Classy" Freddie Blassie. Blassie told him that wrestling was "95%" fake. Egos did play a part in the other "5%".</p><p> </p><p> After the WWF moved to the Providence Civic Center, the Witchi's continued to promote the cards for the first year or so. We were still guaranteed seats but not location. </p><p> </p><p> One of the guys that I used to bowl against in some of my leagues was named Victor. He used to sit in the bleachers at Jack Witchi's and yell out "I hate the Chief!". Chief Jay Strongbow was a HUGE crowd favorite there.</p>

Or on the occasional chance that he did give me an answer it was usually a short gruff one or two word answer. The guy always seemed very cagey whenever I asked him something. That led me to believe that he was acting that way because he was not actually a wrestler and just some guy who was lying so that he could impress people.</p><p> </p><p> Anyway, a few years ago I was over my friend’s house and he was watching WWE OnDemand and I could swear the show he was watching was an MSG show from the 70’s and sure enough the dude from my barbershop was in the match (I believe it was Ivan Koloff, but I could be wrong. I just know it was a very old show from the mid to late 70’s.) and he was a jobber. I don’t even recall his name but I swear it was him.</p><p> </p><p> My point being is, if that guy was not willing to talk to me because of the stupid code of not revealing what happens behind the curtain. Imagine how he must feel about a show like that.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> This guy would not talk about wrestling with me as he seemed to be going by the old code of never telling the fans any secrets. It sucked because with anything I am interested in I love hearing the history of it. Needless to say I would have loved to hear any of his old stories but he just would not talk about it.</p>

Thanks for sharing that. My Brit. Lit. teacher only told a certain few after hours about his friendship with Blassie.

 

Around 30 years or so ago, my other brother was visiting our dad in Bristol, RI, and on the way home stopped into a small convenience store. While there, a huge guy goes in with a couple of friends. The guy was wrestler King Kong Bundy. My brother also had a habit of meeting famous people just by chance. One time, he was walking past the Providence Civic Center, now known as the Dunkin Donuts Center, with a friend of his and someone from a trailer waived him and his friend over. The person from the trailer was Willie Nelson. Another time, my brother was asked by his friend if he wanted to go to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at the Boston Garden against the Canadiens. My brother had called me to see if I wanted to go too but I was at the store when he called and missed out. They sat 8 rows from the ice and 5 seats from the Montreal bench. This was 20 years ago this year. Boston ended up winning and advancing to the next round. After the game my brother and his friend went and had a late dinner and drinks. Two couples ended up joining them later. They were Bruins' defensemen Don Sweeney, and his wife, and Ray Bourque, with his wife.
