The Ultimate Fighting Championships Begin!

At the end of the 1980's and into the 1990's, the world of boxing was beginning to fall by the wayside with many boxing fans. With legendary names, such as “Sugar” Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns retiring and the defeat of boxing's next great Mike Tyson, and his subsequent arrest and jail time, the world was looking for its next combat sport to arise. However, it wouldn't be until 1993, that they would get the “Ultimate Fighting Championship”

Art Davie, a business executive and entrepreneur, proposed a new idea to Don King, world famous boxing promoter and “lover of money.” That idea was an eight-man single-elimination tournament called "War of the Worlds". The tournament was inspired by the Gracies in Action video-series produced by the Gracie family of Brazil which featured Gracie Jiu-Jitsu students defeating martial-arts masters of various disciplines such as karate, kung fu and kickboxing. The tournament would feature martial artists from different disciplines facing each other in no-holds-barred combat to determine the best martial art and would aim to replicate the excitement of the matches Davie had seen on the videos. Don King, a noted boxing promoter, as well as an agent to many of boxing's top talents, agreed to act as the event's creative director and promoter, however under different rules, they spoke with many investors and personalities about participating and joining in on the promotion, but one man had a legendary vision.

Vince McMahon, legendary wrestling promoter, saw this a very wise business decision, but he also saw the backlash from this, as many would call it in their early years, barbaric sport. So, Vince McMahon set up a meeting with many legends of many different martial-arts styles and a Nevada State Athletic Commission representative to set up the rules of, what was being called, Mixed Martial-Arts.

While Art Davie proposed a deal that would set up a tournament to determine what was the best style in the world in a no-holds-barred capacity, these new rules would actually blend together almost all styles of martial-arts to give no one man a single advantage, unless that man was really well rounded. These rules are seen as a “bible” like article that was the beginning of the sport that would take over the world of combat sports and overtake boxing as the greatest combat sport of all time.

The rules were as followed:

-The fight will have three 5 minute rounds for a non title match, and five 5 minute rounds for a championship match up.

-All competitors must fight in approved pants, shorts, or trunks, without shoes or any other sort of foot padding. Shirts or upper body gis are not allowed. Fighters must use approved light gloves (4-6 ounces) that allow fingers to grab. A mouth guard and protective cup are also required and are checked by a State Athletic Committee official before being allowed to enter the cage/ring.

-A fight can end with a knockout, submission, referee stoppage or judge decision at the end of the three/five rounds. The ten-point must system is in effect for all fights. Three judges score each round and the winner of each receives ten points, the loser nine points or fewer. If the round is even, both fighters receive ten points. The fewest points a fighter can receive is 7.

-While more classes would be added, the UFC will start with 7 different weight classes:

Super Heavyweight: 266lbs+

Heavyweight: 206lbs to 265lbs

Light Heavyweight: 186lbs to 205lbs

Middleweight: 171lbs to 185lbs

Welterweight: 156lbs to 170lbs

Lightweight: 155lbs and under

Women's Openweight (Female Only): All weights.

-Additional rules of the fight:

Holding or grabbing the fence

Holding opponent’s shorts or gloves

Butting with the head

Biting or spitting at an opponent

Hair pulling

Fish-hooking

Intentionally placing a finger into any orifice, or into any cut or laceration of your opponent

Eye gouging of any kind

Groin attacks of any kind

Downward pointing of elbow strikes

Small joint manipulation

Strikes to the spine or back of the head

Heel kicks to the kidney

Throat strikes of any kind, including, without limitation, grabbing the trachea

Clawing, pinching, twisting the flesh or grabbing the clavicle

Kicking the head of a grounded opponent

Kneeing the head of a grounded opponent

Stomping of a grounded fighter

The use of abusive language in fighting area

Any unsportsmanlike conduct that causes an injury to opponent

Attacking an opponent during a break

Attacking an opponent who is under the care of the referee

Timidity (avoiding contact, consistent dropping of mouthpiece, or faking an injury)

Interference from a mixed martial artist's corner man

Throwing an opponent out of the ring or caged area

Flagrant disregard of the referee’s instructions

Spiking an opponent to the canvas on his or her head or neck

Attacking an opponent after the bell has sounded the end of the period of unarmed combat

When a foul is charged, the referee in their discretion may deduct one or more points as a penalty. If a foul incapacitates a fighter, then the match may end in a disqualification if the foul was intentional, or a "no contest" if unintentional. If a foul causes a fighter to be unable to continue later in the bout, it ends with a technical decision win to the injured fighter if the injured fighter is ahead on points, otherwise it is a technical draw.

With the introduction of these rules, fighters from all over the world were itching to get in on this new form of combat sports. Everyone from the world of professional wrestling, boxing, amateur wrestling, jiu-jitsu, sambo, sumo, and many more were wanting to get in on this fight league to see who was the best in the world!

While it would be a few months until the card was announced, many were interested in seeing what would become of this newest sport to grace us.

[As you should have guessed, this is my attempt at a Dawn of MMA dynasty, however I am throwing a bit of “As Real As It Gets” mod in this as well, as well as a few user created fighters, this stems from a dynasty I tried to start a couple of months ago, that I lost interest in, so I figure I would shorten it up and possibly have a winner on my hands.]

UFC Matchmaker, Art Davies, had a press conference today to give us a card for the first three events in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championships! For the first and only time it seems in the United States, the UFC will hold seven “one night” tournaments over the course of seven months to determine the first champions in each weight class in the UFC. Due to regulations by various State Athletic Commissions, one night tournaments are extremely regulated or even banned in some states, so Art Davies announced that this would one of the only times to ever see a fighter fight more than once in one night so these tournaments are not to be missed.

The first card announced is UFC 1: Heavyweight Grand Prix, which will feature several huge names in the combat sports world, and some relative newcomers that have shined in front of UFC Management. The tournament itself, held on Saturday, Week 4 of January 1994, will feature 8 fighters:

The first match of the night will pit Kurt Angle, former two time NCAA Division 1 wrestling champion, and bronze winner in the 1992 Wrestling World Championships, will find himself in a tough spot though as he takes on Tommy Morrison, former WBO Heavyweight boxing champion.

Our next match up will feature another legend in the boxing scene taking on a kick boxer, as former Lineal, WBA, and IBF World Heavyweight boxing champion, Riddick Bowe, takes on former WMTF World Light Heavyweight Champion, South Pacific Cruiserweight Champion, New Zealand Cruiserweight Champion, New Zealand Heavyweight Champion kick boxing champion, Ray Sefo.

Third match of the tournament features the baddest man on the planet, Mike Tyson, making his return to combat sports from his early release from prison, to take on Muay Thai expert Martin Holm.

And our last match up of the tournament, will feature two of Japan's favorites as Pancrase's Ken Shamrock and famous Japanese professional wrestling Keiji Mutoh go one on one in the Octagon!

Along with those awesome match ups, the prelims will feature several prelims. The card will be available in full on the day of the weigh ins and we will see who becomes the first UFC Heavyweight Champion at UFC 1!

This match was described as Great by fans. Morrison controlled the match early, but it wasn't until he dived after a hurt Angle that he got caught on the ground with nowhere to go until he got caught in the submission.

Ray 'Sugarfoot' Sefo (1-0) defeats Riddick 'Sugar Man' Bowe (0-1) by Unanimous Decision. A Great match up as the two went right at one another. Several near finishes in the match up by both men, Sefo ended up being too much for the boxing champ as he puts kicks and slightly better ground game to work to pick up the victory to earn the victory.

-Judges scores were 29/28, 29/27, 29/28.

'The Sniper' Martin Holm (1-0) defeats Mike 'Kid Dynamite' Tyson (0-1) by Unanimous Decision in what the fans called an Average match. Mike Tyson's return to combat sports is not a good one, as he is nearly dominated by Muay Thai expert Martin Holm, proving that his ring rust might be an issue for him in the future. Judges scores were 29/28, 29/28, and 30/27.

'The World's Most Dangerous Man' Ken Shamrock (1-0) defeats Keiji 'Space Lone Wolf' Mutoh (0-1) by Unanimous Decision in a very poorly fought match. Ken Shamrock uses his superior grappling skills to defeat the wrestler Keiji Mutoh, dominating him from start to finish with it. Judges scores were 30/27, 30/26, and 30/27.

Kurt Angle (2-0) defeats Ray Sefo (1-1) by Unanimous Decision in an Average match up. Another example of wrestling dominating boxing, as Kurt Angle works over and keeps Sefo on the mat for much of the match and gains the victory and a trip to the finals. Judges scores were 29/28, 30/27, and 30/27.

Ken Shamrock (2-0) defeats Martin Holm (1-1) by Submission (Arm Triangle) in 1:58 of Round 1 in a Good match. Shamrock wastes no time getting the victory over Holm, quickly taking the tired Holm down and grabbing a arm triangle submission victory.

Kurt Angle (3-0) defeats Ken Shamrock (2-1) by TKO (Strikes) at 2:53 of Round 1 to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Ken Shamrock is not happy about the stoppage, as he wanted to continue fighting but the ref had seen enough as Angle pulls off the miraculous upset and beats Ken Shamrock to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion!

http://www.tnanews.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/kurt-angle.jpg

After Event Press Conference:

-Art Davie said he was extremely happy with how the event went, and said that the PPV and show turn out were behind exceptional. People were complaining that there was Very Poor commercial rating for the show however, however the fights made it a Good critical rated show.

-Three awards were given out tonight with bonus money of $6,500 going to each winner. Fight of the night went to both Ray Sefo and Riddick Bowe for their fantastic brawl on the main card, knockout of the night went to Peter Aerts for his quick prelim knockout of Patrick Smith, and submission of the night goes to Ken Shamrock for the exceptional arm triangle he applied to Martin Holm.

-Davie let us know that Ken Shamrock will be out a little over 2 months with a stomach/rib injury, while Branko Cikatic will be out for 6 months with a medium shoulder injury.

Also, the card for UFC 2: Super Heavyweight Grand Prix was announced:

Main Card:

UFC Super Heavyweight Title: ? vs. ?

UFC Super Heavyweight Title Semi Final: ? vs. ?

UFC Super Heavyweight Title Semi Final: ? vs. ?

UFC Super Heavyweight Title Quarter Final: Aleksandr Karelin vs. Billy Blanks

UFC Super Heavyweight Title Quarter Final: Teila Tuli vs. Dan Severn

UFC Super Heavyweight Title Quarter Final: Volk Han vs. Scott Bigelow

UFC Super Heavyweight Title Quarter Final: Bruce Baumgartner v. -The two fighters in the opening match are members of the two world famous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu families (and actually cousins) as Rickson Gracie and John Machado take on one another for the first time in a professional setting.

Main Card:

Quarter Finals:

Rickson Gracie (1-0) defeats John Machado (0-1) by Unanimous Decision (Decent). The judges score read as 29/28, 30/26, and 29/27 for Gracie. Both Machado and Gracie exchanging several Jiu-Jitsu maneuvers avoiding takedowns and battling on their feet, but it looks like Gracie got the edge in the judges eyes.

'Bruiser' Minoru Suzuki (1-0) defeats 'The Muscles From Brussels' Jean-Claude Van Damm (0-1) by Submission (Americana) in 3:37 of Round 3 (Great). Great match with Van Damm taking early advantages and landing several big shots that nearly ended the fight several times, but in Round 3 Suzuki capitalized and a mistake by Van Damm and locked in an Americana to get the tap out and win.

James 'Lights Out' Toney (1-0) defeats Ron Tripp (0-1) by unanimous decision (Good). All three judges score the contest 29-28. James Toney worked out his plan to perfection. Avoid getting tied up with the Sambo fighter and stay on the feet and throw fists. The two men battled on their feet for three good rounds, but Tripp couldn't get his Sambo game into the work.

'El Guapo' Bas Rutten (1-0) defeats 'The Lion' Lennox Lewis (0-1) by Unanimous Decision (Average). All three judges scored the fight 30-27. Bas Rutten dominated this fight from the word go, keeping Lewis grounded the entire fight. Bas Rutten gains the victory and moves on to the next round.

Semi Finals:

Minoru Suzuki (2-0) defeats Rickson Gracie (1-1) by Split Decision (Average). Rickson did all he could to get this fight to the ground, but Suzuki would not allow it, blocking 8 attempts at a takedown, and scoring only 1 significant punch in the match, his takedown defense scored him the victory this go around.

James Toney (2-0) defeats Bas Rutten (1-1) by Unanimous Decision (Average). All three judges scored the fight 29-28, getting boos and jeers from the fans as James Toney looked to be far and beyond the best fighter in the ring scoring 16 of 22 standing punches, one (surprising) standing knee, and getting 18 ground strikes after knocking Rutten to the ground, while Rutten only scored three kicks. However, Toney moves on to the finals.

Finals:

Minoru Suzuki (3-0) defeated James Toney (2-1) by Submission (Kimura) in 2:47 of Round 4 (Good). Suzuki gets another surprising submission, two in one night. The unstoppable James Toney looks posed to win as they entered the fourth round. Having knocked Suzuki down several times, he had the lead in punches landed, ground strikes, and score cards, but Suzuki surprises him with a Kimura when he throw a punch to get the win and win the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship!

After Event Press Conference:

-Art Davie said he was this was a decent show, but nothing compared to the last two. It came back as a good critical rating but still a very poor commercial rating as some of the fans learn the stars in our promotion.

-Art Davie reported that the only injuries tonight were Rigan Machado, who suffered a minor head injury and will be out for a month or so, and a minor neck injury for Jean-Yves Theriault, Benny Urquidez is the only person who suffered a bad injury. He has a medium leg injury and will be out for nearly 7 months.

-Three fight of the night bonuses were handed out tonight as well. Knockout of the Night goes to Jean-Yves Theriault, but the big winner of the night was Minoru Suzuki. Not only did he win the Light Heavyweight Grand Prix and the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, he brought home Fight of the Night honors with Jean-Claude Van Damm, and Submission of the Night for his submission of James Toney in the finals.

-Jean-Yves Theriault let the reporters know that this would be his first and only MMA match up. He thinks the UFC, Art Davie, and all the UFC management for giving him the opportunity to prove to himself he had what it took.

-Minoru Suzuki says he feels beat up but accomplished, he thanks the fans, the UFC and his three opponents for this opportunity tonight. He is proud to be the first ever UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and will work his hardest to make sure to keep it.

-James Toney says he feels cheated, he had the fight won and couldn't finish and got caught. He says he will be back for that belt soon enough.

Art Davie released the info on the next UFC card:
