The Story So Far…

There is an old expression that says, “oh, it’s lonely at the top,” but that certainly isn’t true for the reigning and defending NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett who has turned TNA into his own personal playground. Double J has constantly interfered in matches, used his lawyer Tom T. Stenenbaum to delay title defenses, and surrounded himself with what some would call a rogues gallery. Perhaps most powerful on that list, at least politically is TNA Management Consultant Don Callis who has had no qualms with using his influence to make sure Jarrett’s interests are fulfilled. Together, the duo have made a decree to the rest of the Total Nonstop Action Wrestling roster: you are either with Team Jarrett or you’re against them.

The list of those who have pledged their allegiance to the man formerly known as “The Chosen One” is certainly a motley crew. The rough and tough duo of
Kevin Northcutt and Legend (a former Jarrett foe), known collectively as TNA Red Shirt Security have proven to be a valuable resource to Double J as the big man tandem put America’s Most Wanted on the shelf at the last pay per view of 2003. Chris Harris was brutalized with a vicious steel chair attack while handcuffed to the turnbuckle. His partner James Storm suffered a worse fate as The Red Shirts injured the neck of the ‘Tennessee Cowboy’ with a devastating spike piledriver.

Former X-Division champion Kid Kash has also aligned with the heavyweight champion of the world, recently picking fights with the National Wrestling Alliance’s Black Shirt Security squad lead by ‘Heavy D’ Don Harris and rounded out with the rookie tandem of Chris Vaughn and Rick Santel. While Kash has been busy picking fights, he also has kept one eye open for fellow Jarrett ally - the masked monster
Abyss due to their turbulent past in TNA.

The 300 pound Abyss has been busy keeping
Raven from fulfilling his destiny of becoming NWA World Champion, but The Gathering, CM Punk and Julio Dinero did a good job of that as they turned on their leader after a hellacious six man tag team cage match against Abyss and The Red Shirt Security on the December 17th PPV. When Raven had the match won, and a title shot virtually secured, Punk and Dinero delivered a head crushing double chairshot to their mentor and allowed the opposition to make the cover and deny the man from The Bowery his date with destiny. The Gathering’s motives remain unclear as TNA went to a holiday break from its pay per view offerings.

The remaining Team Jarrett members are made up of the self proclaimed ‘manager of champions,’
Glenn Gilbertti and his clients David Young, Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger. However, trouble has clearly been brewing among ‘Camp Gilbertti’ as Diamond and Swinger have missed Team Jarrett meetings, the former NWA Tag Team Champions have also accused Gilbertti of putting his own interests and the interests of his team with David Young ahead of theirs. On the December 17th pay per view, Jeff Jarrett aided Diamond and Swinger to victory over AJ Styles and the recently returned D’Lo Brown - preventing Styles and D’Lo each from getting a shot at Jarrett’s NWA title while at the same time essentially handing Gilbertti’s clients a shot at the NWA World Tag Team Titles.

That situation has put a lot of heat on Glenn Gilbertti as he doesn’t want Diamond and Swinger claiming the title shot while the reigning NWA World Tag Team Champions
3 Live Kru hold the gold because the trio of Konnan, BG James and Ron ‘The Truth’ Killings are high on the list of those that Jarrett wants as allies. In their defense, 3LK has shown little interest in aligning with Jarrett’s side of the cause, but Diamond and Swinger’s challenge certainly wouldn’t be helping to sway their decision.

Perhaps the biggest thorn in Jarrett’s side is NWA Director of Authority
Erik Watts. Tired of Jarrett’s political plays and constant meddling with all things TNA, the son of the legendary ‘Cowboy’ Bill Watts has shown that he is willing to do anything in his power to get the NWA Title off the waist of Jeff Jarrett. His latest effort was making Sting Jarrett’s latest challenger, but through Don Callis and political powering, Double J took the title out of the equation. It turned out to be a good thing for Jarrett as Sting pinned the NWA Champion’s shoulders to the mat on the final pay per view of 2003.

Elsewhere, the X-Division is geared to headline the first pay per view of 2004 as reigning X-Division Champion
Michael Shane looks to defend his strap in the very same style match he won the title. It’s Ultimate X: 2 and Michael Shane defends the belt against Christopher Daniels, Low-Ki and Chris Sabin.

NWA TNA on PPV #76 D+

“Ultimate X: 2”

TNA Asylum - Nashville, TN

Wednesday, January - Wk 1, 2004

>> NWA TNA on Pay Per View opened with NWA Director of Authority Erik Watts and his girlfriend Goldylocks being confronted by ‘The Phenomenal’ AJ Styles and D’Lo Brown in a back hallway of the TNA Asylum. Styles and Brown were noticeably upset as they confronted Watts, their loss of the “Dream Tag Team Match” on the last PPV some two weeks ago weighing heavy on their minds as Jeff Jarrett and his allies cost AJ and D’Lo a shot at the NWA World’s Heavyweight Title. Styles demanded that something had to be done around TNA, and Watts agreed - stating that he was going to do something big here tonight in regards to the Jeff Jarrett problem, urging for both D’Lo and AJ not to worry. D+

>> As the NWA DOA walked away, the standard opening montage gave way to the dancing TNA Cage girls, Lollipop and April as well as cheering fans inside the ‘TNA Asylum’ before cameras settled in at the announce position. C+

>> ‘The Professor’ Mike Tenay and Don West welcomed fans to the show, before a straight-laced Tenay noted that there had been a big change to tonight’s scheduled main event, a match that was supposed to see X Division Champion Michael Shane take on Chris Sabin, Low-Ki and Christopher Daniels in Ultimate X: 2. However, moments before tonight’s broadcast hit the airwaves, ‘The Fallen Angel’ Christopher Daniels was transported to a nearby medical facility in an ambulance after being found unconscious backstage - the subject of a vicious attack. West noted that Daniels’ injuries were pretty serious and officials still did not know who the attacker was - an investigation is underway. With that said, TNA Management Consultant Don Callis had named a replacement for Christopher Daniels in tonight’s Ultimate X: 2 main event. Daniels’ former running mate in Triple X, ‘Primetime” Elix Skipper was set to take the place of ‘The Fallen Angel.’ D+

>> Following that, a highlight package replayed the vicious Spike Piledriver onto a chair delivered to ‘Cowboy” James Storm by The Red Shirt Security as ‘Wildcat’ Chris Harris was forced to watch with his arms handcuffed to the ring before being blasted in the face with a guitar shot from the NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett. D

Tag Team Match: ‘The Phenomenal’ AJ Styles and D’Lo Brown vs. ‘TNA Red Shirt Security’ Northcutt and Legend: With their anger at a boiling point after being screwed over by Jeff Jarrett two weeks ago, AJ Styles and D’Lo Brown looked focused on making the NWA champion’s hired goons pay for his evils. Dangerous in their own right, as evidenced by their brutal beatdown of AMW, The Red Shirts weren’t about to just roll over - and those elements made for a back and forth, hard hitting matchup. As it would turn out, a clear cut winner wouldn’t be established as Legend and Northcutt brawled with Styles and Brown outside of the ring long after referee Rudy Charles had counted both tandems out. D+

After crashing Styles chest first against the steel barricade, The Red Shirts turned their attention to D’Lo Brown as they rolled him into the ring and laid a chair into position. Mike Tenay screamed for help from the back as Legend and Northcutt looked to deliver a Spike Piledriver - but Styles, armed with a chair of his own, made the save for his friend as The Red Shirts scrambled to the back. D-

>> After a promo hyping the ‘2004 Girls of TNA Calendar’, ‘The Professor’ Mike Tenay stood in the ring and reflected on the many great moments that he and the fans of NWA-TNA had witnessed in 2003 before announcing that next week’s show would be an awards themed event where the wrestlers in TNA will be honored for their performances of the past year. Most distinguished of all, Tenay claimed, would be the ‘Mr. TNA’ trophy given to the man voted by the fans as the most valuable player in all of Total Nonstop Action. As the veteran announcer urged fans to log on to nwatna.com and vote in the categories he was unceremoniously cut off by entrance music… C+

That theme belonged to none other than the NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion himself,
Jeff Jarrett with the legendary ‘ten pounds of gold’ strapped around his waist. The champion wasn’t alone either, as his entourage of TNA Management Consultant Don Callis, Kid Kash, ‘The Monster’ Abyss, TNA Red Shirt Security, David Young, Glenn Gilbertti and the seemingly reluctant duo of Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger all followed him to the ring. A boastful Jarrett demanded that nobody needed to wait until next week to hear the winners, he'd tell everyone then and there. ‘Double J’, in his own words announced “Mr. TNA is the one and only NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion - Jeff Jarrett! The tag team of the year is Diamond and Swinger - but only when they win the tag title shot he gave them... and Babe of the year.... who cares about that crap?" Don West was quick to point out on commentary that those may be the winners according to Jeff Jarrett but not to TNA and the fans.

The NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion then moved on and boasted about how great it was to be him, putting over the fact that America’s Most Wanted decided which side they were on in the war between the NWA and TNA and because of that, fans in the Asylum and fans watching at home wouldn't be seeing them around for a good while - courtesy of Red Shirt Security. Not finished there, he also bragged about the fact that he crushed the dreams of AJ Styles and D'Lo Brown on the last pay per view, and in doing so the tag titles would soon belong to Diamond and Swinger. Just as Jeff began to call himself a ‘champion without a challenger,’ he too was unceremoniously cut off…
C+

This time the music was that of NWA Director of Authority
Erik Watts who came to the top of the entranceway with his girlfriend Goldylocks. Watts indulged the fans for a minute, calling Jarrett ‘Triple J’ - Jeff ‘The Jackass’ Jarrett - to which the fans in The Asylum chanted along. Watts then gave Jarrett credit where he said credit was due: Jeff Jarrett had him against the wall when it came to the NWA World’s Heavyweight Title. Jeff was all smiles as he interjected and told Watts that there wasn’t a damn thing the DOA could do about it. “you see that’s where you’re wrong ‘Triple J’ - where there is a will, there is always a way,” stated Watts before claiming that he was a desperate man and there was something both he and Jarrett had in common… Erik Watts wanted the NWA Title off Jeff Jarrett as much as Jeff Jarrett wanted Erik Watts out of TNA. Intrigued, Jarrett asked what Watts was getting at, so the Director of Authority spelled it out for him. Next week, it would be Erik Watts versus Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World’s Heavyweight Title. If Watts wins, then the title would finally be off the waist of the man who had made it his mission to turn TNA into his own sick playground. If Jarrett wins, then Erik Watts walks through those doors and out of TNA for good!

Shocked, Goldylocks looked to be trying to talk Erik Watts out of what he was proposing - while at the same time Jarrett was in conversation with Don Callis. Shrugging off his girlfriend’s pleas, Erik asked Jarrett what it was going to be… and Jeff accepted the bout. As Mike Tenay and Don West hyped the huge ‘Title vs. Career Match’ for next week, the NWA Champion urged fans to get one last look at their Director of Authority because after next week he’d be gone for good.
C+

>> Following that, a highlight package aired showing the recent going-ons of Raven and The Gathering, with the package stressing that Raven has been denied his ‘destiny’ of becoming NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion by the very two men he had taken under his wing - CM Punk and Julio Dinero who delivered a double chairshot to the head of their mentor. C

>> Backstage, Scott Hudson interviewed The Gathering, asking both CM Punk and Julio Dinero why they would put their bodies through the torture of the brutal steel cage match at the last pay per view only to turn on Raven when it looked like they had the match won. Dinero, with a slow tempo to his voice decreed that Raven was a master at playing mind games with his opponents, getting into their heads - well now they were in the head of the master. To do that, they knew that they’d have to sacrifice their bodies, for getting into the head of a man like Raven comes with a price. Punk then claimed that they weren’t the ones who had turned their backs on Raven, that he’d done that when he set The Gathering free. And now, Raven was going to know what it was like to have someone pulling the strings and playing around in his head. Looking a bit uneasy, Hudson asked which member of The Gathering would be taking on Raven in the next bout - to which The Gathering simply replied that it was time for the students to become the teachers… D-

Handicap Match: Raven vs. ‘The Gathering’ Julio Dinero and CM Punk: While the former students of Raven had promised to teach their teacher a lesson, it was the master who seemed to be doing all of the teaching throughout the majority of the bout as Raven stayed a step ahead of Punk and Dinero. After planting Dinero with a Raven Effect DDT, Raven eyed up Punk in the corner just as a masked man climbed onto the apron and threw powder into the eyes of the former ECW Heavyweight Champion. As Raven swung wildly with blind lefts and rights, CM Punk caught him with a running knee to the face before adding insult to injury and dropping his former mentor with his own DDT to get the victory. C-

As Raven was checked on by officials, furiously rubbing his eyes in hopes of regaining vision, The Gathering regrouped with the masked man at the top of the entranceway before Julio Dinero pulled off the hood to reveal a cackling ‘Father’ James Mitchell! The commentary duo couldn’t believe their eyes as Punk and Dinero were now seemingly aligned with Father Mitchell and The New Church. C-

>> Elsewhere, as NWA Director of Authority Erik Watts asked Goldylocks to stop trying to talk him out of next week’s bout, he was met by a number of TNA’s roster members including AJ Styles, D’Lo Brown, Sonny Siaki, Ron Killings, Konnan, BG James and others. 3 Live Kru were the first to address the DOA as Killings and James called Watts’ decision to challenge for the NWA World’s Heavyweight Title a blatant abuse of power. On that same note, Styles claimed that Watts sure had “fixed” the Jarrett situation - the pun clearly intended. Taken back by the roster’s hostility, Watts claimed that he didn’t understand everyone’s frustration, demanding that he was doing it for them. C-

Singles Match: Cassidy Riley vs. Sonjay Dutt: The former ‘Hot Shot’ Cassidy Riley made his return to NWA TNA looking to make a name for himself in singles competition and the X-Division as he battled the impressive Sonjay Dutt. After a ground based approach that looked to take the wings away from the high flying ‘Original Playa from the Himalaya,’ Riley came up short as Dutt battled back and connected with his trademark Hindu Press to lead him to victory. D+

>> After a red-faced plugging spree for all things available to order on the nwatna.com website by Don West, the NWA World Tag Team Champions ‘3 Live Kru’, Konnan, BG James and Ron Killings were out next and performed their newest single, ‘Beware’ (The Remix) for the rowdy Asylum crowd. However, before the trio could finish their set they were interrupted by the music of Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger. Simon claimed he had a problem - that he and Swinger weren’t the NWA Tag Team Champions, but they were about to solve that problem because they were cashing in their title shot there and then. As the duo entered the ring, they were soon met by their manager Glenn Gilbertti and David Young who sprinted down the ramp. Gilbertti attempted to talk Diamond and Swinger out of cashing in their shot, a cause that didn’t go over too well with either man. Mike Tenay pointed out on commentary that Gilbertti was trying to ease things over because Jeff Jarrett wants the 3 Live Kru on Team Jarrett, and Swinger and Diamond were threatening that. Eventually Diamond accused the former Disco Inferno of only being interested in his own agenda instead of theirs - before pushing the so called ‘manager of champions backwards! David Young came to the defense of his ally with a hard right hand to Johnny Swinger, and the rocky foursome imploded right there before everyone’s eyes as Diamond and Swinger went on to clear the ring of both Gilbertti and Young. Having seen enough, 3LK got their hands dirty and sent the top contenders to the floor as well before finishing their set to the cheers of the crowd. D+

Tag Team Match: Kid Kash and Abyss vs. ‘NWA Black Shirt Security’ Chris Vaughn and Rick Santel: The inexperience of the youthful tandem of Vaughn and Santel in addition to the astronomical size difference when compared to the monstrous Abyss was far too much for the NWA aligned Black Shirts to overcome in this one. Despite their rocky past, all had seemingly become water under the bridge for Kash and Abyss. Vaughn got a couple of support rallying near falls on Kash, but a win was not in the cards as the latter portion of the match was all about the monstrous 300 pound monster Abyss laying waste to both Santel and Vaughn with the Shock Treatment and Black Hole Slam. D

After the bell, Kid Kash ordered Abyss to keep the punishment going but NWA head of Security, ‘Heavy D’ Don Harris ran out and got right in the face of the masked monster! Abyss shook with rage and let out a primal scream, before the two massive men came to blows with hard lefts and rights. Slews of officials and security members quickly hit the ring to pull the men apart before too much damage could be done. D

>> From there, a montage of promos aired with each of the competitors in the night’s main event giving their thoughts heading into Ultimate X: 2. Michael Shane promised that history would repeat itself and he would once again walk away from Ultimate X the TNA X-Division Champion. His New Franchise partner Shane Douglas put him over as ‘The New Franchise’ of the X-Division. Meanwhile, Low-Ki promised that his Warrior spirit would lead him to victory and all the other men in the match could do was “be ready.” Chris Sabin claimed that all he had ever wanted to do since he could remember was be a professional wrestler. Last time he was in an Ultimate X match he lost his championship, tonight he will reclaim it. And lastly, the late addition to the bout, Elix Skipper promised to show the world that it was indeed “primetime, baby.” D

Ultimate X Match for the TNA X-Division Championship: Michael Shane © w/ Traci vs. Chris Sabin vs. Low-Ki vs. ‘Primetime’ Elix Skipper: With anticipation higher, and expectations even higher for the sequel to the highly regarded Ultimate X match, Ultimate X: 2 certainly didn’t disappoint. The reigning and defending TNA X-Division Champion Michael Shane made good use of his Ultimate X experience, having won the first ever match of its kind back in August, as well as Traci at ringside to gain him an advantage. Chris Sabin, the only other man in the match with prior Ultimate X experience tried to reach the title early on but paid the price after battling Skipper and Low-Ki on the wires and crashing to the mat courtesy of a hard kick from Low-Ki. Shane attempted multiple times to defend the title by using his New Franchise connections as Traci hit ‘Pie in the Sky’ on Sabin, and ‘The Franchise’ Shane Douglas brought his fist wrapped in a steel chain against the skull of Low-Ki later on, covering the martial artist’s face in a crimson mask. Eventually, Sabin took Traci out of the equation for good when he connected with his Cradleshock maneuver. For his effort, Shane then took Sabin out with some Sweet Shane Music. In the end, after a match that saw each man nearly secure the title a number of times each, all four men took to the wires and kicked, clawed and prodded at one another. Low-Ki was the first to hit the mat, with Shane falling next. In the end, it was the man who flew under the radar most of the match, ‘Primetime’ Elix Skipper who fended off Chris Sabin and secured the X-Division Championship. C-

With Tenay and West putting over the circumstances that led to Elix Skipper, a man not even scheduled to be in Ultimate X: 2 heading into the show, becoming the new X-Division Champion - Skipper posed in the corner with his newly won championship. Don West then brought the show to a close with a red-faced sales pitch for fans to purchase the event next week as Diamond and Swinger claim their NWA World Tag Team Title shot against 3 Live Kru, ‘Mr. TNA’ will be announced and Jeff Jarrett and Erik Watts face off in a title vs. career match!

Saturday, January - Wk 1, 2004

>> In a pre-taped interview, ‘The Gathering,’ CM Punk and Julio Dinero asked their former mentor Raven how it felt to have someone else pulling the strings inside his head - to no longer be the puppeteer but the marionette. A cackling ‘Father’ James Mitchell promised Raven that despite all the wicked deeds that The New Church had committed toward Raven in the past, Wednesday was only the start - the new beginning. D

Singles Match: Sonjay Dutt vs. CM Punk w/ ‘Father’ James Mitchell and Julio Dinero: After a highly competitive bout, ‘The Original Playa from the Himalaya’ nearly sealed the deal with the Hindu Press but Punk rolled out of the way and planted Dutt with a Shining Wizard for the three count. D-

Singles Match: Rick Santel vs. Sonny Siaki w/ Trinity: The former “Ace in the Hole,” ’Cocky’ Siaki controlled the majority of the bout, despite arguing with Trinity at ringside for apparently making herself a spectacle to the men in the arena. Refocused, Siaki put Santel down for the count following the Siakalypse, and promptly had a few choice words with Trinity before heading to the back. C-

1WRESTLING.com - Wrestling News and Notes

  • The storyline "attack" of Christopher Daniels was to cover for the fact that he wasn't even in the building wednesday night. The scheduling conflict was at the fault of TNA, as Daniels is currently committed to a tour with New Japan Pro Wrestling as his masked alter ego Curry Man where he teamed with 'American Dragon' Bryan Danielson in a loss to Gedo and Jado. The fact that Elix Skipper left Ultimate X: 2 with the X-Division title after weeks of appearing to want to regroup Triple X with Daniels and Low-Ki may point to a ready made feud for when Daniels is finished with his tour of Japan.
  • Former WCW standout Scott Norton began his third reign as IWGP Heavyweight Champion with a win over Shinsuke Nakamura Tuesday night.
  • Pro Wrestling NOAH's Akitoshi Saito suffered a Herniation of his L3/L4 disc and will be out of action for 2 months.
  • Monday Night's RAW saw General Manager Eric Bischoff strip Evolution's Ric Flair and Batista of the World Tag Team Championship for "use of excessive force" when Batista brutally attacked The Dudley Boyz and a number of officials.
