PWG - The Rise Of The Guerrilla

I was sitting in the crowd in Reseda, California, watching some of the best independent professional wrestlers in the world take the stage. I had followed the little Southern California company, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, for quite some time. They had a cult like following and the people loved it. The action in the ring was like nothing any other American wrestling promotion had to offer, hard hitting blows, high flying performances, and non-stop action. From the time the event started until the final bell, these fans were getting a show. After the show had finished with the all too familiar tactics of Adam Cole to continue his 18 month reign, I decided to approach one of the head men of the company, Super Dragon. I told him that I had been following the company for quite some time, and that I had tons of ideas on what to do to grow the company to new heights. After a brief conversation he took my number and said he’d talk to the boys about getting me a spot on the booking team. I had experience running some local companies, and it looked like he was interested in what I had to offer. A few days passed and I started to think that my opportunity was all but done when out of nowhere I got a phone call. It was not Super Dragon, it was Excalibur. He said I got the job. I would be booking PWG. He told me to come to Reseda tomorrow and they would walk me through some of their ideas, but after that it was up to me. The future of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla sat in my hands.

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>The first think I did was get in contact with some of the television networks. Because PWG had never been on TV before, getting a network to sign a deal was difficult. In the end, none of the major networks I reached out to would sign a deal, so I made a deal with YouTube. YouTube agreed to play our full length hour show online. This was music to my ears. The ratings may not be as high as they would’ve been had we gotten a network to agree, but it was a television show online that the entire world had access to. Anyone with a computer and interest in PWG could watch our new show, PWG Guerrilla Warfare. The first episode would launch at the beginning of June. </p><p> </p><p>

The days in May seemed to fly by. I had begun to reach out to a few talents to try and get them to sign to PWG. The company already had great talent, but there is always room to improve. A couple of people said they thought PWG was too small for them, one of which was Christopher Daniels. It sucked to reach out to a bigger name like Daniels and get shut down. The others on the list were a long shot to begin with, but having them on the roster would’ve helped us get some attention. Names like AJ Styles and The Great Muta. I also had to stay away from some of the names that I knew the PWG fans would not like despite the fact I knew they’d help us out, especially with the tv part. Guys like Carly Colon and Chris Masters. After putting the fans first, and getting rejected by a few guys, I had assembled a pretty good list of talent to grab. I began signing the few guys on the list that were interested, and a few smaller names that I knew had potential. </p><p> </p><p>

Then it came time to start to hype my first event since taking charge: Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N Roll.</p><p>

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>The air inside the arena before the show was one I would not soon forget. It was amazing. I watched as the guys sold their merchandise to the near 3,500 that came through the doors. I watched from an area in the back as they made their way to their seats and the show was ready to begin. That atmosphere was electric, and the fans, and myself, couldn’t wait for it to start. </p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>10 Man Over the top battle royal for a spot in BOLA</strong></p><p><strong>

Mark Briscoe vs. Alex Koslov vs Rocky Romero vs. Tommaso Ciampa vs. Alex Shelley vs. Rhino vs Seiya Sanada vs. Tony Nese vs. Devon Dudley</strong></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>The first match of the night got underway and it was an important one. The winner of this match would get one of the 16 spots up for grabs in the Battle of Los Angeles. The Forever Hooligans, Koslov and Romero, worked together against the other eight men. Tony Nese was the first to go over the top rope, being tossed out of the ring by Devon Dudley. The next elimination came when Mark Briscoe knocked Tommaso Ciampa to the ground. The fans were delighted to see one of their favorites, Briscoe, go to the top rope, risking it all to hit the Froggy-bow. The fans would get to see the top rope move because he was sent from the top rope outside when Rocky Romero kicked him off. Ciampa did not last much longer either as the Forever Hooligans teamed up to throw him out. The unlikely pairing of Shelley and Sanada worked together to fight Koslov and Romero; meanwhile, Rhino got tossed from the ring by Devon. The field was cut in half now, and it would soon be down to just three when Sanada and Shelley sent the Forever Hooligans over the top rope with a double clothesline. Devon, Alex Shelley, and Seiya Sanada were the final three, all vying for a spot in the BOLA tournament. Shelley got thrown over the top rope, but hung on for dear life. While he swung his legs, trying to get back into the ring, Devon Dudley hit a viscous piledriver on Sanada. Devon then picked up TNA’s X-Division champion, and tossed him out of the ring. As Sanada was eliminated, Shelley skinned the cat, getting himself back in the match. The final two went back and forth, but Devon clobbered Shelley with a hard right hand. Devon then ducked under a wild punch that Shelley swung. Devon grabbed Shelley from behind and lifted him up. He was going to toss Alex Shelley over the top rope when Shelley reversed it. He used the top rope to kick himself back, hitting Devon with sliced bread #2. Both men shot to their feet after the move and Shelley clocked Devon with a hard kick. Devon stumbled into the ropes where Shelley sent him over with a clothesline.</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>Adam Pearce made sure the fans didn’t like him on his way to the ring where he was taking a man making his PWG debut. Chris Sabin was hoping that he could have the same success that his tag team partner had in the opening match. The crowd was behind Sabin, but Pearce was looking for a fight. The two men fought back and forth in the center of the ring, but a quick low blow changed that. Behind the referee’s back, Pearce nailed Sabin in between the legs. Chris Sabin dropped to his knees where Pearce grabbed his head. He lifted him up before dropping him on the crown of his head with a destructive piledriver. Pearce pinned Sabin for the win, and the crowd let him know how much he was hated.</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

After avoiding an Air Fox, KENTA made his way to his feet. He taunted Fox to stand up before sprinting across the ring. He drove his knee into Fox’s skull with a Busaiku Knee. </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>The Best Friends were the fan favorite in this match and the DDT4 winners looked very impressive. The newly formed team of Zeke and Uhaa Nation also showed they could go as a team, the two showed great chemistry. Murder Inc and Best Friends started the match against each other, but Chuck Taylor was quick to tag in Zeke. Homicide and Zeke battled in the ring until Homicide tagged in Eddie Kingston. The Best Friends watched on as Murder Inc. took apart the team of DomiNation. At least until Zeke was able to tag in Uhaa Nation. Uhaa charged into the ring where he nearly decapitated Homicide with a massive clothesline. Then he ran forward, knocking Eddie Kingston off the apron. He grabbed Homicide off the canvas before quickly returning him down with a Gorilla Press. The big man then left his feet, hitting an amazing Standing Shooting Star Press on Homicide. Uhaa made the cover and the team of Murder Inc. was eliminated. After eliminating Murder Inc, DomiNation looked to take out the Best Friends. However, the lack of tag team experience led to their downfall. Even though they were much smaller than their opponents, Trent? and Chuck Taylor cut the ring in half, not allowing Uhaa to make the tag. The Best Friends broke Uhaa down until Chuck tagged in Trent. Trent leapt from the top rope and hit a tornado DDT onto Uhaa. Chuck took Zeke off the apron as the referee counted to three.</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Johnny Gargano hurled O’Reilly into the ring post before rolling him under the bottom rope. After putting Kyle into the ring, Gargano lifted his weakened opponent off the canvas. The Inner City Machine Guns took a beating early on. The brawling tag team of Gedo and Jado beat Rich Swann to a pulp. The team from Japan had the experience and it showed as they both took turns putting a beat down on Swann. The tides turned when Jado had Swann locked in a crossface. Ricochet entered the ring and slammed a superkick into Jado and then dragged Swann to the corner. He reached over the rope and slapped Swann’s back, tagging himself into the match. Ricochet flew around the ring at a pace that the veterans could not keep up with. He smashed a kick into the side of Jado’s head before taking Gedo off the apron. Paul London used the top rope to springboard into the ring and take Liger down with a clothesline. Liger and London were back on their feet, but once again Liger got control. He hit an enziguiri on London before lifting him into the air. Liger sent London head first into the canvas with a massive brainbuster. Liger went for the cover, but London kicked out at two! Liger couldn’t believe it. He shook his head as he stood up and grabbed London off the canvas. He tucked London in between his legs before lifting him on to his shoulders. </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>Up next was a six man tag match that pit the team of Buck Steen Buck against World’s Cutest Tag Team and their third partner Sonjay Dutt. The match began with Nick and Candice LaRae in the ring, but that didn’t last long because Candice quickly tagged in Joey Ryan. Steen and The Young Bucks were in complete control of this match, at least until Sonjay stepped in. Dutt went crazy, taking Matt out first with a skull shattering DDT. Nick was next, and he saw the same fate, being taken out with a Bombay Buster. All that was left for Dutt to do was take out Kevin Steen, and then he would win it for his team. As he charged at Steen, he dove into the air. He tried the running crossbody, but Steen caught him. Steen hurled him overhead with a fallaway slam. Joey Ryan ran into the ring, but Steen met him with a kick to the gut. Steen then dropped half of the World’s Cutest Tag Team on his head with a package piledriver. Sonjay had recovered, but so did the Bucks. Kevin Steen lifted Sonjay up for a Package Piledriver as well, and Candice entered the ring to interfere. Her interference was met with a double superkick from the Young Bucks. Steen dropped Sonjay on his head and Buck Steen Buck picked up the win.</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>With the fans still buzzing over Frankie Kazarian’s return to the ring, the other two competitors enter. Three of PWG’s top names were hoping to pick up the win because it meant that at the next event they get a shot at the PWG World Championship. Jay Briscoe started the match by pummeling Roderick Strong. Frankie Kazarian kept his distance as Briscoe and Strong traded blows. Strong hit a devastating knee to the jaw of Jay Briscoe that sent him stumbling back into Kazarian. Frankie lifted Jay off the ground and planted him on his upper back and neck with a German Suplex. With Jay down for the moment, Roderick and Frankie began to fight. Once again it would be Strong’s striking ability that gave him control. He hit a Sick Kick on Kazarian that knocked him out cold. Roderick went for the pin, but Jay Briscoe broke it up. This time the fight between the two would be won by Jay hit a haymaker right and then slammed Strong to the canvas with a Death Valley Driver. He went for the pin but Roderick kicked out. The two battled back and forth until Roderick locked in the Strong Hold. Jay Briscoe was on the verge of submission when a super kick found a home on Roderick Strong. Kazarian smashed his boot into Strong’s jaw. Roderick released his submission and fell to the canvas. Kazarian grabbed him off the canvas and hurled him to the outside. With Strong flung to the outside, Frankie Kazarian picked up Jay Briscoe. He lifted Jay onto his shoulders before hitting the Back to the Future. He covered Briscoe for the pin with Strong on the outside of the ring.</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>The match begins with a brawl between the two men. Chris Hero is beating the champion with hard punches when Adam Cole lands a solid right counter punch. The right hand sent Hero stumbling back and gave Cole room to recover from the pounding he had taken. As Cole began to get some offense in, Chris Hero smacked him with a Discus Elbow. The blow sent Cole crashing to the canvas, but he was able to make the ten count. The fans were on their feet as Cole ducked under an oncoming kick from Hero and lifted him into the air. The PWG World Champion dropped Hero on his knee with a Brainbuster. Adam Cole raised his arms as the referee began the ten count, but Hero answered it. The two continued to battle back and forth, and the end nearly came for Cole when he was trapped in a guillotine choke. However, the champ was able to turn the choke into a Deadlift Suplex. Cole once again had Hero in the air and just like the time before, he dropped Hero down with a Brainbuster. This time Chris Hero was much slower to answer the referee’s count, but he still got up. Chris Hero got to his feet while Adam Cole was taunting the fans. He rolled down his elbow pad to show a golden metal plate. Chris Hero smacked Cole with the loaded elbow in the back of the head. The PWG World Champion fell straight to the mat, laying face down on the canvas. The referee began his count and Chris Hero could all but taste the gold. However as the referee closed in on the final 10 count, Adam Cole answered. He got to his feet and the crowd, and Hero, was in shock. Chris Hero was readying for another strike, but Cole left the ring. He walked to the time keeper, grabbed his title, and began to walk to the back. Chris Hero chased him down and the two fought in the crowd. Chris Hero got control and sent Cole into the ring. Adam Cole stood up as Chris Hero was entering the ring. Hero entered the ring and that’s when Cole struck. He lunged forward, slamming the PWG World Championship into Hero’s skull. Hero didn’t fall to the ground, but he was out on his feet. Adam Cole sent Hero down to the canvas with a Corona Kick. The blow from the belt and the kick were enough to knock Chris Hero. The referee reached the 10 count and Adam Cole retained.</p></div><p></p><p> </p><p>

<p>I was more than pleased with the show, and it appeared the fans were too. We debuted some of my newest signings, the big one being Frankie Kazarian. We also put on a showcase of some of Japan’s best talents. Thankfully New Japan and NOAH had agreed to work with me. I had sent a couple of our stars to Japan to get extra experience and exposure in exchange for the talent like KENTA and Jushin Liger. Now the countdown to the debut of PWG Guerrilla Warfare was on.</p><p> </p><p>

As I sat in my apartment a few nights after the show, I was about to go to bed when my phone vibrated. I looked down and it was a message from Nick Jackson, one half of the Young Bucks. The message was nothing but bad news. </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m37/dustingrayy/407a056b-e561-4f0c-84ff-c850244eeda6_zps1b75ee2f.png</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Damn I thought to myself. We just lost one of our highest drawing workers. Matt without Nick could draw, but the plans for the tag title match to kick off our first episode of Guerilla Warfare were thrown out the door.I wasn’t sure what I would do. I couldn’t strip the Bucks of the titles, the crowd would riot, but I had to do something to keep the titles relevant, especially since Nick would be missing our next event. But what could I do, this was independent wrestling, things like this happen.</p>

The camera start to roll and the fans are loud, like always, and to kick off the show, PWG World Champion, Adam Cole makes his way to the ring. He says for those that didn’t see it, he knocked out Chris Hero at Sold Our Soul For Rock ‘N Roll. He says he’s the greatest PWG World Champion in the history of the company and the proof is in the fact that his reign is over 18 months long. He says at Is Your Body Ready? he will take out Frankie Kazarian and send him back to where he came from.

Mark Briscoe vs Roderick Strong

Both of these men looked prepared as the first televised match of PWG Guerrilla Warfare was kicking off. Neither one of these men had picked up a win at the last event, but Roderick’s was probably more stinging than Mark’s. Roderick had come up just shy of getting a PWG World title shot. Strong looked angry as he put a barrage of fists into Briscoe’s ribcage. Roderick hit a chop that sent a smack echoing around the arena. As the fans cringed, Mark Briscoe fired back. He used his Redneck Kung Fu, throwing karate chops into Roderick. The two traded blows back and forth, but the quickness of Kung Fu was enough to give Mark the edge. He chopped Roderick one time on the top of the head and Strong fell to the canvas. After the two had battled for a bit longer, Mark went up to the top rope. Froggy-bow was coming and the fans were excited. As he plunged toward the mat, Roderick rolled out of the way. Briscoe crashed and burned and Strong hopped to his feet. Roderick Strong quickly grabbed Mark and hit him with the Gibson Driver. He stacked Briscoe up for the pin.

Winner – Roderick Strong

British Ambition (Marty Scurll & Joel Redman) vs. World’s Cutest Tag Team

The debuting team of Marty Scurll and Joel Redman, British Ambition, worked extremely well together as they went head to head with Joey Ryan and Candice LaRae. The two British workers took it straight to World’s Cutest Tag Team from the go. Candice LaRae was beaten down by Scurll and frequent tags from the Brits made it hard for Joey Ryan to keep up when he came into the ring. Redman and Scurll thwarted Joey Ryan’s attempt at a comeback despite the ‘Sultan of Sleaze’ getting a bit of offense. Redman ended the match by pinning Joey Ryan after a twisting brainbuster.

Winner – British Ambition

Following the win from the debuting British Ambition, Excalibur took the ring. He came down from the announce booth to make two announcements. First was that with the age of TV in PWG came the age of a new title. Excalibur unveiled the TV title to the fans and said a match for it would be next. His second announcement was that WWE Hall of Fame announcer, Jim Ross, would be making his commentary debut next week, joining Excalibur on the announce team.

PWG TV Title

Johnny Gargano vs. Chavo Guerrero

Johnny Gargano got the TV title shot after defeating Kyle O’Reilly at Sold Our Soul For Rock ‘N Roll, and he was going to go one on one with wrestling veteran, Chavo Guerrero. The former WWE Cruiserweight champion looked to add another title to his resume, but Johnny Gargano had other plans. The two traded blows early on, but it looked like Chavo had underestimated his opponent’s skill. Johnny Gargano quickly took control of the match and nearly put away the vet with a Baby Ace Crusher. Chavo was able to kick out, and Gargano quickly transitioned to the next attack. He set Chavo up on the top rope, but Guerrero countered. He kicked Gargano in the head, sending him to the canvas. Chavo then dove from the top, hitting a Frog Splash on Johnny. With the TV title in mind, he went for the cover; however, Johnny Gargano kicked out at two. Chavo stood up and began arguing with the referee. Johnny Gargano got to his feet and crept up behind Chavo. He locked in a Full Nelson before quickly turning it, slamming Chavo to the canvas with the Hurts Donut. Gargano went for the pin and the referee counted to three.

Winner and NEW PWG TV Champion – Johnny Gargano

After crowning a new TV champ, Frankie Kazarian comes out to the ring. He cuts a promo telling the fans that he is proud to be Number One Contender. Kazarian says at ‘Is Your Body Ready?’ he will outlast Cole in a 30 minute ironman match and become the new PWG World Champion. As he is talking, Buck Steen Buck and Cole come out from the back. Nick Jackson’s arm is in a sling, so he did not get physical, but the rest of Mount Rushmore went on the attack. Steen, Matt Jackson, and Adam Cole surrounded Frankie Kazarian and began to viciously beat him down. Adam Cole stands over a beaten Frankie Kazarian, with the title raised high in the air, and to his side are his three partners in crime.

The main event of the first episode of PWG Guerrilla TV was on, and these two men put on a show. Alex Shelley, who had recently won a spot in the BOLA tournament, was going one on one with the ‘Wizard of Odd’ Brian Kendrick. Shelley and Kendrick went back and forth in a fast paced match. Brian Kendrick fell behind in the beginning, but mounted an unlikely comeback. Kendrick hit Shelley with Electric Mayhem and the crowd exploded in cheers when Shelley kicked out. Kendrick could not believe it, and neither could the fans. Kendrick went back to the top rope to soar again, but this time Shelley knocked him off. He crotched Kendrick on the top rope before climbing up. Shelley hit Kendrick with a Frankensteiner from the top rope. Kendrick was out on the canvas when Shelley stood up. He lifted the ‘Wizard of Odd’ off the canvas and hit him with a Golden Gate Swing. He bridged the pin and watched the referee’s palm slap the canvas three times. Shelley stood up in the center of the ring and celebrated the win as the fans cheered. The show ended with the image of Shelley standing on the second rope with his arms raised.
