Death Row 2200 [HYPE / HELP]

Recommended Posts

What to expect: A small mod based in a prison... In space... In the future. It will probably be exactly as over the top and stupid as that sounds.

THE SETUP:
(This could all potentially change.)

The mod will start in the year 2200, long after Earth's destruction, and it will take place on AEON, a massive space station that houses over five million people. AEON is divided into 12 zones, each named after a region from the Old World, and each further divided into a number of districts. The largest and most diverse zone is USA, which contains not only the richest and most important districts on the station, but also some of its poorest and most dangerous. USA is also home to the infamous prison districts, run by a ruthless warden and his army of guards.

The law is harsh on AEON, with even the most petty infractions earning citizens some amount of time in a local jail. Those found guilty of truly serious offenses are invariably sentenced to death, and spend whatever time they have left rotting away in the prison districts. While this system has kept most of AEON relatively safe, it has also proved to be an enormous burden.

It was the warden himself who came up with the plan to resurrect a sport from the Old World, known as Mixed Martial Arts, and use it to make money from the prison system that had been such a drain on the government's resources. His idea was simple: The convicts fight, the yokels pay to watch and place bets, and the prisons can actually sustain themselves. AEON law says that the fighters must be paid, but it all goes back into the prison's bankroll sooner or later.

(I'll write up a better and more thorough description of the scenario if I ever finish the mod.)

Admittedly this is a ridiculous niche idea, but I've had the urge to make a mod like this ever since I saw the 'Prison Mod' concept mentioned in an old thread from one of the TEW forums. I've just never had the rendering ability to make it happen. However, after seeing Fleisch's Millennium mod, I realized that Hero Machine could do the job well enough, especially with some help from Photoshop. I'll need to make somewhere between 200 and 300 fighters, if not more, but hopefully there will still be enough variety that it isn't too weird.

Some examples:

(The first two guys are the warden and one of the guards. Not sure what their actual roles will be within the game, or if they'll appear at all.)

If the description didn't make it clear, this mod will only use the USA game area, at least at the beginning. It might be interesting if prisons were built in some of the station's other 'zones' down the line and those wardens copied the idea, but I don't want that to be the focus of the mod. The competition between cell blocks in the same area is more interesting to me, because a star in one company will have the same drawing power in every other company.

A few ideas:

  • Each promotion will represent a cell block in the prison, though I haven't decided if I want to use simple names (A BLOCK, B BLOCK, etc.) or give them standard promotion names and simply mention the location in their description. There would be no particular need to put all of the promotions under the ownership of a single company, but I might make an alternate version of the mod where the warden runs his own promotion and calls fighters up from the others as he wishes.
  • Fight Teams would essentially be prison gangs. No brainer.
  • As for the inmates being paid and actually being able to negotiate their price, that pretty much ruined the idea for me at first, but now I think it's fair enough. Instead of an 'In Hell' situation where inmates are forced to fight, this would simply be the only way for inmates to earn money. The Warden and his staff obviously exploit the hell out of them for profit and entertainment, but if they can earn enough before their bodies give up, they might be able to bribe their way out of prison and retire as free men, or at least avoid execution. The negotiations are a little harder to accept, but I don't think it's a big deal. With the prison making money from TV and PPV sales, the inmates would know that they have some amount of leverage. Fighting is optional after all, even if it's the only option.
  • The Hall of Fame would basically be a list of inmates who actually managed to buy their freedom. While plenty of inmates might get their sentence reduced to life, actually walking away free should probably be that rare.
  • With death and injury rates both set to Very High, hopefully there would be enough of both to sell the idea of a dangerous and unpredictable environment.
  • Local shows complicate things a little, but I'd just imagine them as fights organized by inmates in an attempt to get the attention of the guards and earn a paid spot in one of the major cell blocks.

Below are some things I haven't decided on yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • CEOs. There is only one man in charge of the prison, so I figured the CEO spots could just be for the head guard in each cell block. That would also make me feel okay when they inevitably start getting replaced as their cell blocks drop in popularity. Still not sure about that, though. I considered making those guards into User Avatars as well so the pictures won't go to waste, but that could present problems for those who play with Bypass CEO turned off. No one wants to get blocked by themselves during a negotiation. :p
  • Weight classes. Yea or nay? Right now I'm leaning toward one or two blocks using weight classes while the rest keep things open. Weight classes might make things too organized and safety-conscious, but I don't like the idea of a whole mod that's openweight. I tend to get bored with openweight promotions pretty quickly.
  • Regens. They'd pretty much be a necessity in such a small mod (especially with a high death rate), but they'd all come with descriptions that kill whatever sense of immersion you might have. I also plan on using a lot of nicknames (because it's prison) and slightly weird names (because FUTURE), and the regens might look out of place since WMMA3 doesn't let you edit the pool of names it uses for them.
  • Women's cell block(s). Personally, some of my favorite games in WMMA3 and TEW13 have been with all female promotions, but if there's no interest in that side of things then I'll skip it for the initial release.
  • Where to begin. I could have the game start right after the warden sets everything up, so you'd start with a completely level playing field for promotions and a clean slate for fighter records. I'd also be fine with starting as much as a decade into the project, when there would be a little bit of history to work with, and variation in the size and funds of the promotions. I'm still on the fence there, but leaning toward the second option.

So yeah, as you can see I'm still in the earliest stages of planning, but I wanted to mention it now (at the risk of embarrassing myself when I give up) in case anyone feels like helping out. If you have any ideas at all for the mod (however big or small), or you can think of any obstacles that I might not have considered, please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'd also be happy to accept character descriptions. Be as vague or detailed as you want. It will be a good while before I'm ready to use those though, and there's a chance I'll end up changing some of the details, so no worries if no one is interested.

Character pictures would be welcome, but you'd need to let me know before you start so I could send you some templates to use. I just want to make sure that the jumpsuits all fit the same way so no one looks too out of place. Fair warning, I also might edit or recreate your picture to my liking. If you want to submit a photo for a potential user avatar and/or CEO, no need to ask for a template. Just stick a suit or something like that on them and make sure to export as a PNG headshot at 500x750.

Sorry if I rambled too much there.

I love the idea of this, although I'm making my own niche mod (an all female mod) at the moment so would be too busy to help out.

But it's an excellent idea.

Not a problem. Character submissions are welcome but not at all necessary, and in time I can figure out the other stuff. Knowing that you like the idea is more than enough. Thanks. :)

<p>Thanks. I'm hoping to see some of the features from TEW13 make their way into WMMA4 at least. Editing the pool of worker/event names, the alliance system, disabling areas of the game that aren't in use, selecting a CEO as a user avatar... All things that would be useful for this mod.</p><p> </p><p>

Really, the ability to edit the fight commentary and news story text could make mods like this feel like a different game almost, but I imagine that's a lot to ask. If it would take much work at all to make that possible, there probably isn't enough demand for it to justify the effort.</p><p> </p><p>

EDIT: By the way, has anyone experimented with the Destiny settings for Death Age? It's a no brainer to use that feature to simulate the whole death row thing, but I don't want to kill them off too young, and the Mass Edit feature doesn't have options for destiny settings. I assume I'll need to set it to either Young for Very Young if I want it to kick in somewhere in their late 40s or early 50s. With a small mod like this I can figure it out the hard way, but any advice could save me a lot of time.</p>

The last two will be user avatars. The blonde guy is one of the inmates from the first post. Not sure if I'll end up using that, but the plan right now is for him to be one of the few hall of famers at the start of the game, a Royce Gracie-like figure (more like a combination of Gracie and Hannibal Lecter :D) who re-introduced grappling techniques from the Old World and helped to change modern MMA from a sideshow into a legitimate sport. After buying his freedom he led a revolution and took control of the UK zone, where you can choose to have him found the first MMA promotion for free men and start breaking other inmates out of the AEON prison districts.

Of course that's just an early idea, and it would be optional anyway. I'd set his promotion to Closed, so it would just take a quick change to put it in your game.

In more important news, I've been looking through some of Hero Machine's weirder options, and I'm thinking about taking this thing even further over the top by creating an all-alien cell block in one of the smaller zones like Mexico or Central America. Anyone think that would be too much? Here's an example:

http://i.cubeupload.com/HNulkl.jpg

The obvious problem is that some prisoners in both zones will be 'transferred' to the wrong place, but I'm still kind of into the idea. Maybe I'll just throw a few aliens into the USA zone instead, and avoid that problem entirely.

I'm up to 50 fighter pictures. Progress is slow, but I want to do my best to give each inmate a distinct look. Photoshop helps, though. Most of the pictures I've posted have been edited in one way or another. Usually just adding little lines and wrinkles, but I actually drew some of their eyes myself as well, like Do-Rag Guy and Beardy in the last post.</p>

I'm cool with Chester. And if you really do want to edit him into a prisoner, I'd be happy to include an alternate photo with the jumpsuit.

The last guy is way too obviously based on Takanori Gomi (I even traced a picture of him to get the hair <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />), but I only did it because he's one of my favorite fighters and he has a cool look. I don't plan on including any real fighters in the mod (of course), or making any other pictures that are so obviously based on them. I might even change the color of his hair if it feels too weird.</p>

Been thinking about how to set up the company divisions, and since I want to have at least 4 cell blocks with ideal division sizes of about 30, I really can't have them use more than 3 each. Not for the first release of the mod, anyway. I'll need over 430 fighters to play with that setup comfortably (giving the default blocks room to grow and leaving room for the player to open a new promotion), and even that many pictures and biographies will take a long time.</p><p> </p><p>

On a related note, I thought about eliminating weight cutting in the mod and having everyone's 'Best Weight' match their walking weight. It would fit the setting for several reasons, but I'm just not sure how well it would play out in the game, and I still want a somewhat level playing field. Anyone have some advice there? Let's say each promotion had three divisions (Feather/Light, Welter/Middle, etc.) and everyone simply fought in whichever division suited their weight. Would that be too unfair, and would it make anyone less interested in playing?</p>

I think this is a really cool idea, im pretty excited about this. i like the idea of no weight cutting, but im not sure how the weight would work and how much of a difference it really makes in a fight.

I also like the idea of the aliens in a smaller region, i assume you would just make them prisoners as well, i would much prefer this than the idea of a making a organisation for human free men in a different region as i don't believe the crossovers would be as bad, if you were to even make free men.

Have you decided how far in time your starting in? i would be cool with it starting from get go and i assume it would save a ton of work. The same goes with female fighters, i think it would be better to have more males than have female fighters as well although it would be pretty cool.

anyway this looks sweet man

I never planned to add non-prisoner fighters to the mod, for the record. You'd just have the option to activate a certain promotion in one of the other zones that 'breaks fighters out' of the prison. What I'd like to do is have about a dozen user avatars with different backgrounds and goals (which I'll lay out in the thread or in a file that comes with the mod), and that would be one of the scenarios you could choose. Still just an idea, though.</p><p> </p><p> I'm still very into the idea of adding aliens, especially in one of the other zones. I'm waiting until I finish all of the other fighters before moving forward with that in case I change my mind. They would definitely be prisoners, just possibly segregated from the humans at first. It really just depends on how I feel once I have a good collection of fighter pictures to work with. I'm doing that part first in the hopes that I'll have some of this other stuff figured out by the time I finish. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> So unless I change my mind, I'll either start things off a few years into the story, or the initial release will start at the very beginning and I'll move things up a few years for a later version.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="Brownhouse" data-cite="Brownhouse" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="38104" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>The same goes with female fighters, i think it would be better to have more males than have female fighters as well although it would be pretty cool.</div></blockquote><p> Female fighters will almost definitely have to wait, but I <em>really</em> want at least one all-female block in the mod eventually. Luckily there's a setting for Retirement Age in the Destiny window. Everyone will have their Retirement Age set to 'Very Old' and their Death Age set to either 'Young' or 'Very Young'. I'll just have to decide if it would be better to have people retiring when it makes little sense to do so, or people being executed when they're supposed to be set free. In my opinion you could either cancel out the HOF scenario and just put it as a generic HOF style system within the prison league or just count 'Dead' as either put to death or left the jail, but still essentially dead. Doesn't really need a change.

You could also have a retirement system where the good fighters or 'retired' are moved to an isolated block and given a lifetime sentence with no death penalty. Since it would be rare for a fighter to retire if you were setting everyone to low death ages, it would make it an accomplishment to fight so often you're spared a death penalty.

Just ideas of course, I don't know how the testing is actually working out or how rare deaths are despite a very high system and how many retired guys you'd actually have.

Theoretically though this is more down to diary writing and ideas for write offs as opposed to how it actually works in game. The most important thing is a working system when it comes to both promotion and fighters.

I think you're right about dropping that idea for the Hall of Fame. It's easy enough for the player to bring people back to life whenever they want, so it's no big deal. As for the ex-con user avatar I mentioned a few posts back who (optionally) starts his own promotion, it would make more sense if he broke out anyway, since he's supposed to have a hidden route into the prison that he uses to help others escape.

Anyway, I haven't done much testing yet. I did sim through a couple of years in the default data with the death rate set to Very High and no one died, so it looks like Blackman was right when he said that it wouldn't make much of a difference. I'll need to do a lot more testing to figure out the Death/Retirement Age settings. Like you said though, the fighters and promotions are the top priority.

Also do you have any ideas for Television/PPV contracts or will they just be completely ignored?

I definitely want to have something for PPV at least. The player should be able to take their show on the road eventually, so it would help to have at least one carrier in each zone. Most would be set to Insignificant size though, otherwise the promotions could grow too quickly. Carriers can have up to 5 contracts at once, so I could just have one or two carriers that cover the entire station. Probably best to keep it simple like that.

Thanks for the help by the way, guys. I really appreciate getting some opinions on these things.
