UWF 1991: I can't back down from a challenge...

Recommended Posts

Sometimes in life, you get more than you bargained for. When I went into Herb Abrams' office in New York to interview for a position as announcer in his Universal Wrestling Federation, there really was no way I could have anticipated what would happen. Even for a field of work as crazy as professional wrestling, this was (and is) insane. I decided to write down my experiences because I fear in a couple of years no one will believe this actually happened. Including myself. My name is Eric Bischoff and as of right now, it seems like I'm in control of the UWF.

http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah185/prometheus2099/UWF1991/EricBischoff1_zpsd784518f.jpg

http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah185/prometheus2099/UWF1991/UWFb_zpsb89873f0.jpg

It was obvious within seconds after the interview started that Herb Abrams, who founded UWF and somehow got it onto national cable TV, was in a severely chemically altered stated. In plain english, the guy was coked out of his everloving mind. He was talking fast and he was talking nonsense. Mostly, he talked about having to meet his "provider" in L.A. and that he needed someone to take care of the TV tapings for UWF Fury Hour in his place. I reminded him that I was there to talk about a position as on-air talent. Potentially replacing him, yes, but merely in front of the camera as the announcer for UWF's television programming.

I'm not entirely sure if he heard me or understood me – all I know is he put a signed contract in front of me that would call for me to be the executive producer of all UWF programming and give me complete control over creative, financial and contractual decisions. "Take it or leave it!" Abrams said. I looked at the contract – the money was a bit more than what I had envisioned for the announcing position and would give me and my family a bit of security, but most of all what I saw was... a challenge. I've never been able to back down from a challenge – a character flaw that cost me a couple of teeth already – and I realized that I couldn't back down from this one, either.

Seconds after I signed the contract, Abrams was out the door without as much as a word of advice or caution. I have no idea when he'll be back, but until then, I'll try and do the best I can with what he dropped into my lap.

UWF (this UWF at least – Bill Watts used to run a territory under the same name) is a new company and only started running shows three months ago in September. With Paul Orndorff, Cowboy Bob Orton Jr, Greg Valentine, Honky Tonk Man, Don Muraco an others, there's a bunch of recognizable talent under contract. Some of them might be past their prime, but I'm sure they have something to offer. Above and beyond the old-timers, Dr. Death Steve Williams and Bam Bam Bigelow are very credible heels who still have a lot of good years ahead of them. There's potential here. And of course, most valuable of all, there's a national TV deal. I don't know if I can make this work, but I'll give it my very best. I'd better call Loree and tell her that I won't make it back to see her and the kids this week...

OOC: This is the first time in many years I'm doing a diary for TEW, so I hope I'm not too rusty and some people will enjoy the ride.

So there we go, I'm officially the UWF promoter now. I just sent out a press release with a list of matches for our TV taping this week. Three of those matches (Sammartino vs. Koloff, Blair vs. Orton and Orndorff vs. Williams) had already been advertised, so obviously I have to follow through on them, even though personally, I may have wanted to wait a little bit before delivering a big match like Orndorff vs. Dr. Death.

Currently, UWF does not have a champion of any kind, but I found a ready-made belt in Herb Abram's office (which is now my office, I guess) – the UWF SportsChannel Television Title. I've decided to award it as soon as possible which is why the already advertised matches plus an additional match between S.D. Jones and the Honky Tonk Man are to be the first half of first round matches in a tournament for the title.

The second half of first round matches will happen in the following week, the semi-finals over the next two weeks and by mid-February, UWF is gonna crown it's first TV champion. I've tried to talk with someone from SportsChannel about the tournament and a bunch of other issues, but no one was available for me. I'm not sure these people even know the UWF is on their channel...

I have met with a couple of the boys by now. Some of them appeared happy to hear that Herb Abrams isn't gonna be around for a little while but most were entirely indifferent. They're here to get a paycheck and nothing more. I tried to motivate them a bit, pointing out that they have a chance to be seen on national TV and improving their personal brands, but I'm not sure they really cared about what I had to say. I can't even say I blame them. Not that long ago, I ran a landscaping business and sold meat from the back of a truck. Who am I to tell Paul Orndorff or Bob Orton anything at all?

My office staff consists of an elderly lady called Marge. She's nice and all, but she's also a bit forgetful and couldn't tell me much about what Herb had planned for the near future. At least she helped me find a book of contacts to potentially sign. The first name on the to-call list was Riki Ataki, who worked a couple of dates for UWF already as an enhancement talent. He did well and made his opponents look good, so I offered him a deal for some more appearances. My first signing as UWF promoter. I still can't believe I'm here and I'm doing this. What a crazy world...

(UWF SportsChannel Television Title Tournament – Round 1)

Paul Orndorff vs. "Dr. Death" Steve Williams

Normally I would go with Dr. Death but I picked a heel heavy tournament after this so I will go with Paul.

(UWF SportsChannel Television Title Tournament – Round 1)

B. Brian Blair vs. "Cowboy" Bob Orton Jr.

I would like to go with Brian Blair but I have to think that Bob is more over, the only thing is I have picked two other heels to win in the tournament and I highly doubt you would have three heels win in the first round.

(UWF SportsChannel Television Title Tournament – Round 1)

David Sammartino vs. "The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff

Uncle Ivan beat David's old man for the WWWF World Title now it is time for him to beat Bruno's kid.

S.D. Jones vs. Honky Tonk Man

Tag Team Match

Wet 'n' Wild (Sunny Beach & Steve Ray) vs. The Power Twins

Barry O vs. Corporal Kirchner

I would have thought for sure that Barry O would be a jobber but it would seem that is not the case.

Really excited to see this, not because I've ever seen the UWF but just because justtxyank is right, the roster is so strangely intriguing; you literally could just grab up anybody from the world and it'd make sense.

It's time for the Captain's Corner with Lou Albano. His guest this week is Iceman King Parsons who talks about the disgusting remarks made and attitude shown by Colonel DeBeers. Iceman brings out Larry Sanders, the referee DeBeers didn't want to referee his matches due to the colour of his skin, and promises to both Larry and Captain Lou to make the Colonel pay for his deeds. In their match on next week's Fury Hour, Iceman promises he "ain't gonna have no mercy, NO WAY!"

So that was the first UWF event I was responsible for. I think it went pretty well for the most part. We're off to a decent start, even though there have also been a bunch of things I wasn't happy with.

The Penta Hotel that damn fool Abrams booked wasn't even a third full. We'll have to be back here in next week to honor the agreement they had with Herb Abrams, but after that, I'll be looking to shift to a much smaller venue, perhaps even back to the West Coast where all previous UWF tapings have been. I have no idea why Abrams decided to hop to the East Coast this year, especially since his drug dealers of choice seem to reside in Los Angeles.

The tag team match was dreadful to watch. Just god-awful. Some of the guys told me that young Steve Ray and especially Sunny Beach are decent hands with some upside, so I guess I'm gonna have to blame this abomination on the Power Twins.

I absolutely hate what Herb has done with Colonel DeBeers. Hate it. When I spoke to him on the phone (he wasn't around for this taping), I told DeBeers I wanted none of that racist sh!t in the future. I believe in seeing things through, so I'm gonna give the people the match between DeBeers and Iceman that has been advertised for next week, but after that, I'll wash my hands of this thing and go a different route.

Bob Orton just looks, sounds and acts like a star. He had a one-minute promo that might have been the highlight of the show (although I also really liked the main event). I'm very impressed by "Ace" Orton. Too bad his brother Barry O shows pretty much none of the same qualities. There actually were maybe a dozen people in the crowd who cheered for Barry, but I can't say I see anything special in the guy, which is why I had him lose in such one-sided fashion. There's much more potential in Kirchner, I think.

Since the Orndorff / Dr. Death match had already been advertised, I had to deliver it, but I didn't want there to be any conclusive ending and I wanted Steve to look as strong as possible. I think it worked out well which isn't too surprising since they are just tremendous talents.

Bruno gave me a hard time about having Ivan beat his boy. In every break, he kept going on and on about how he had lost once to Koloff and that should be enough and how David was young and had upside while Ivan was old and busted. I have a lot of respect for Bruno, how could you not? So I promised him I'd do something with his son and told him I had some good ideas. I don't really. Not yet, anyway.

Some of the guys asked me about the non-televised live event we had scheduled for the following week. First time I heard about that one, thanks Herb! I'll have to come up with something for that, since – once again – you have to give the consumer what's been advertised. Maybe live events can even bring in some additional money, I don't know, but I feel like our focus should be our TV show. This is how we reach all of the US, this is our biggest exposure, so this is where we'll put forward our best efforts.

OOC: Thanks for the interest so far! I'll probably get into more detailed write-ups as I go along, but I'm still easing back into this thing...

Predictions:

BHK1978: 5/6 Well done, sir!

Beejus: 4/6

LordJaguar: 4/6

Hey! How did I miss this!

Outstanding work! I'll bookmark this for sure.

UWF is one of my guilty pleasures. Such a weird mashup of guys that I really like, a tv deal...but somehow it was always garbage. LOL

The Col. DeBeers stuff was cringe worthy to watch. Interested to see where you take it. Someone once said of DeBeers "His racism drew a ton of heat everywhere he went but never sold a single ticket."

I hate seeing Dr. Death lose, but at least it was by DQ. Be conscious of the fact that Steve Williams went nearly a decade without being pinned or submitted in North America! So they say anyway...

I have some mixed feelings about this card. The Rock vs. The Hammer is a good main event, even though they're both a bit older, they still have lots of supporters and should do well.

I hate the whole storyline around DeBeers, so I'm not too fond of the co-mainer, but it's been advertised before I took over – no choice, there. I also caught some heat for putting two bad guys against each other in Bam Bam and The Viking, but quite frankly, that's just how it shook out and I hope it won't be too much of a problem. Bam Bam has been the good guy in his most famous US run in the WWF, so I simply told him to channel those days and see if maybe the crowd wouldn't much rather cheer him.

Probably what I'm most excited about is the tag team match. I've made lots of calls to various workers across the country in the past week and unfortunately most of the more famous ones wanted no part of the UWF, either because they know it's Herb Abrams' company and they (correctly) think he's incompetent, an idiot and a junkie or because they don't want to be in business with me, Eric Bischoff, a complete unknown who has never laced up wrestling boots himself. But I managed to come to terms with two really exciting talents who are gonna be the heart and soul of our tag team division (which, so far, is pitiful to say the least). They're good at what they do, they have a fanbase already... I'm extremely happy I got those two and I can't wait to see them mix it up!

A healthy tag team division is important, because you don't want to have only singles matches. You want a bit of diversity. For the same reason, I really want to take advantage of the relationship Abrams has built with the Wild Women of Wrestling organization and build a ladies' division. My first choice to head that division would have been Wendi Richter of MTV Rock'n'Wrestling fame. Unfortunately, like so many others, she felt that UWF wasn't worth her time or efforts, so I'm going to have to look elsewhere for my female star...

Great work yourself! Without the rising storms mod and your call for some UWF love, I couldn't and wouldn't be doing it.

I'll have to admit I never watched an actual Fury Hour broadcast - what I know are the UWF VHS tapes that were sold here in Europe a few years later. The matches and segments on there were pretty much all out of context and made no god-damn sense whatsoever, but I still loved it as a kid because it was only the second promotion outside of WWF and WCW I'd had any exposure to (the first one was New Japan, which broadcast for a while on Eurosport). And it was the first time I saw Cactus Jack do his sommersault to the concrete floor outside, which - to me at least - was pretty insane at the time. Steve Williams must have made an impression on me as well, because I remember I had some no-brand hasbro knock-off wrestling action figures and I named one of them Dr. Death (even though in truth it looked more like Jim Duggan with red hair...).

It's time for the Captain Lou's Corner, tonight with Bob Orton Jr and Steve Williams. "Cowboy" and his manager John Tolos talk about the fact that after the previous week's show went off the air, B. Brian Blair came out to save Paul Orndorff from Orton's and Dr. Death's attack. But at the UWF Live event this Saturday, there would be no saving either Orndorff or Blair as both them will be annihilated by the unbeatable team of Bob Orton and Steve Williams. Captain Lou reminds them that B. Brian Blair is a tag team expert and suggests it's a wide open match but Dr. Death, who had been standing there silently the entire time, silences him with a menacing look. The show goes off the air with Orton and Tolos proclaiming that nothing and nobody could withstand the onslaught of the Golden Greek's group...

Overall Show Rating: C-

Another decent show, although of course the main event couldn't quite live up to the standards of the Orndorff vs. Williams match from last week. But overall, it went pretty much as I expected and we drew a couple more fans than last week. Still not nearly enough to justify the venue but it's certainly better to have an increase in viewers than a decrease.

Fans didn't really enjoy Bam Bam Bigelow more or less in the role of the good guy. Scott told me afterwards that it was because it hadn't been long enough since the last time he switched from good to bad, but that's clearly nonsense since the last time he played a good guy in the US was almost three years ago. Be that as it may, for the future I'm gonna keep Bam Bam as a villain.

The other guy I had test the waters for a potential switch was Greg Valentine. He told me he was more comfortable as a bad guy as well, but it seems to me that I have quite a few decent villains and only one really exceptional hero in Paul Orndorff (though of course I don't want to sell B. Brian Blair or Don Muraco short), so unless I can bring young Tom Brandi up quickly, I still may have to switch The Hammer or someone else.

I do have new heroes for the tag team division. The Rock 'n' Roll Express are one of the greatest tag teams of the past decade and I'm extremely happy I could come to terms with them. Fans didn't exactly tear the house down when they came out (New York isn't really were they made their names, anyway), but I still think it went well and they're gonna add a lot to the company.

I'm also glad that we're done with the racist DeBeers angle for the most part. The Colonel wasn't entirely happy about it and told me that it was good, cheap heat but I want no part of this thing. I talked about what I wanted to do with him in the near future and he seemed okay with that. Another talent on this show who shall remain nameless also complained about me killing the angle and made some rather despicable remarks about ethnic minorities. I considered firing him on the spot, but thought better of it because I'd already pencilled him in for this weekend's live show. Still, I don't see much of a future for that guy as long as I'm around.

Captain Lou, Ace Orton, John Tolos and Steve Williams really worked some magic in the Captain's Corner tonight. The set-up with all of them standing in front of a green screen isn't the best in the world, but we don't really have money for an actual set, so it's gotta do for now and those guys certainly got the most out of it. I'm hoping their segment is gonna boost ticket sales for the live show this Saturday, which is built pretty much exclusively around the Orndorff & Blair vs. Orton & Williams tag team match because a bunch of our other talent is booked elsewhere for the night.

OOC: Again, thanks for following along! I know most people would probably push Cactus Jack heavily right from the start, but I'm going at it a bit differently, trying to act like a young Eric Bischoff actually might have at the time. He has no way of knowing Mick Foley would go on to become a superstar. He's clearly a talented heel, but there are a bunch of more accomplished heels already in the company, it's the face side that is lacking, so Tom Brandi is a higher priority than Cactus Jack. Besides, just looking at them side by side, it'd be hard to figure that overweight weirdo could possibly have more upside than the well-built, good-looking Italian.

Predictions:

justtxyank: 5/6

Beejus: 5/6 (9/12 overall)

The last event that had already been advertised when I took over. I'll try and use it to gauge whether we could possibly make money of non-televised events. That's part of the reason why some of our higher paid guys aren't going to appear - the other part is that a lot of them are wrestling elsewhere, which is somewhat annoying. I can understand Greg Valentine takes his WWF commitments seriously (more seriously than his UWF dates), but some of the other promotions shouldn't take precedence to the UWF. We have national TV, for crying out loud. But it's gonna take time to convince the boys that the UWF is here to stay. Hopefully. In truth I don't even know if I'm here to stay once Herb Abrams comes back from whatever the hell he is off doing. If he comes back.
