Just in from the AD From: AD Subject: 2003 Financial Constraints You will have $2,535,000 available for your athletic budget. This marks a change of $0 from last season. Remember, this money needs to go towards scouting, assistants, other staff and medical training. You will also have $87,500 to spend on recruiting actions each week. Your weekly recruiting budget may also be impacted by efforts put into bringing other college-level transfers and is based on the alumni funding, other outside donations (helped by our prestige) and the number of scholarships available. So, good luck and spend wisely. Your job may depend on it.

Hot Off The Press It has been confirmed that coach Peak received a lucrative contract offer from Michigan State and he said no. We have also learned he was contacted by his old team Ball State regarding a return as their head coach and he turned them down, possibly ending speculation of his seaking a return home to Indiana.

1 on 1 with Coach Peak Question: Coach Peak can you comment on how it feels having won 4 straight National Championships? Answer: Well, to start I want to give all the credit to the wonderful young men that made this possible. This years senior class, my first recruiting class here at Georgia, has certainly been a very special group. Next, I want to thank my assistant coaches for a great effort and a job well done. Each and every week they put in the hours with me getting the game plan together and helping put our young men in a position to be successful. Finally, I want to thank the University of Georgia for giving me this wonderful opportunity. Question: You mentioned the opportunity. Could you expand on that a little more? Answer: Well, when I was at Ball State I had the opportunity to recruit and coach some fine young men and we a lot of success. But, there wasn't a real opportunity to compete on the National stage. And, ultimately, I wanted to challenge myself against the best because the only way to find out just good you are, or where you need to improve as a coach is to go against the best. I guess what I'm trying to say is it's hard to take a small regional team in against a national power and get a true gage of where you are as a coach because there's such a big difference in level of talent on the roster. For example, we have guys here at Georgia buried on the depth chart and they would have started for me when I was at Ball State. Speaking of Ball State I want to congratulate Coach Slater who took over for me when I left for the job here at Georgia. He had a rough first year there going 6-5 and missing out on a bowl appearance. But, he's turned it around going 11-2 and 12-1 with 2 Motor City Bowl wins prior to this season. And this season they were 12-1 with another Motor City Bowl win. Now, I could be mistaken but I think that's a pretty good 3 year run. Question: Coach Peak, there have been a lot of rumors over the past 2 years. The most recent rumors have you looking at the NFL and Notre Dame. What can you tell us about your immediate future? Answer: To begin with, I really don't like a question like this at this point in time. I mean, we have made a bit of history over the past 4 years and haven't even had a chance to fully absorb the achievement; not to mention, we're in the middle of recruiting a 20 plus man class. But, I'm going to do my best to address this question. First, I am not looking at the NFL at this point in time. While it is a tempting proposition that pays a lot of money, it simply is not something I am considering. Second, while it may or may not be common knowledge, the Notre Dame job is my Dream Job. That said, I am not looking to leave the University of Georgia. I am not actively searching or putting out feelers for any coaching position. If, at some point in time, the University of Notre Dame contacts me about becoming their head football coach I would sit down with University of Georgia Administrators and discuss it with them before meeting or discussing anything with the University of Notre Dame Administrators. Finally, I have a pretty big recruiting job ahead me right now and I need to get going because we are trying at this very moment to put together another #1 ranked recruiting class.

Little Bit of Discouraging News From: AD Subject: 2004 Financial Constraints You will have $2,525,000 available for your athletic budget. This marks a change of $-10,000 from last season. Remember, this money needs to go towards scouting, assistants, other staff and medical training. You will also have $143,500 to spend on recruiting actions each week. Your weekly recruiting budget may also be impacted by efforts put into bringing other college-level transfers and is based on the alumni funding, other outside donations (helped by our prestige) and the number of scholarships available. So, good luck and spend wisely. Your job may depend on it.

On the Recruiting Front Recruiting Class Rank: #1 From: AD Jim Scales Subject: Final recruit signings The following recruits ended up coming to Georgia: QB Sam DeCarlo, 4-stars Mitchell (New Port Richey, FL) National Rank: 323, Regional: 73, Position: 17 With continued effort, accuracy should become a positive part of his game. Should develop decent arm strength, but he'll never throw hard enough to hurt anyone. Has the athletic base needed to eventually develop a good scrambling game. Over time he should develop good instincts as a quarterback. RB Brent Stith, 3-stars Parkview (Lilburn, GA) National Rank: 682, Regional: 152, Position: 47 Scouts feel he will grow into a good north/south runner. As he continues to learn the position, he will become a solid receiver out of the backfield. With a little more muscle, he'll break tackles on a regular basis. Won't ever possess the kind of running instincts to stand out from the crowd. FB Patrick Biakabutuka, 3-stars Mayfield (Mayfield, KY) National Rank: 992, Regional: 241, Position: 35 His teammates will be impressed when they see what a solid north-south runner he becomes. The concensus seems to be that he will eventually be a solid run blocker. He will ultimately make solid contributions with his receiving ability. His running style will help him become good at breaking tackles. WR Idrees Newell, 4-stars Columbus (Columbus, MS) National Rank: 135, Regional: 29, Position: 7 When he reaches the top of his game, he won't drop many passes. When he learns how to make cuts a little sharper, his route running could be unparalleled. I think he'll get the hang of run blocking but won't ever be much better than average. Sooner or later, the combination of speed and body control will make him a top runner at his position. WR Jackie Smart, 3-stars Griffin (Griffin, GA) National Rank: 327, Regional: 75, Position: 40 The receivers coach thinks this guy will run some of the better routes on the team eventually. With more dedication, he can develop the type of speed most receivers only dream of. He'll eventually learn to block downfield but this isn't area he'll excel in. Sooner or later, the combination of speed and body control will make him a top runner at his position. WR Frank Foley, 3-stars Henry County (McDonough, GA) National Rank: 611, Regional: 142, Position: 86 He'll eventually have good hands, but probably just average for a wide receiver. With more dedication, he can develop the type of speed most receivers only dream of. I think he'll get the hang of run blocking but won't ever be much better than average. His main job is to catch the ball but he will eventually surprise people with his electrifying running. TE Abe Denson, 2-stars Savannah Christian (Savannah, GA) National Rank: 1342, Regional: 317, Position: 66 Has the potential to become one of the best receiving tight ends in college football. With continued commitment, he will eventually run reliable routes. Given a little more time, this kid is going to have good speed for his position. Will continue to evolve into a forceful, energetic player. OT Adewale Trumpy, 4-stars Bethany Lutheran College (MN), New Philadelphia, OH, HS - OH National Rank: 78, Regional: 16, Position: 5 Should become a dominating run blocker as he gains more experience. When he reaches his peak, he'll be able to hold off even the best offensive linemen on pass plays. Will become very aggressive once he feels more confident in his skills. You don't need to be an expert to see that this kid may become one of the strongest linemen in the conference. OT John Moffett, 4-stars Burnsville (Burnsville, MN) National Rank: 114, Regional: 23, Position: 7 Should become a dominating run blocker as he gains more experience. When he reaches his peak, he'll be able to hold off even the best offensive linemen on pass plays. Will become very aggressive once he feels more confident in his skills. You don't need to be an expert to see that this kid may become one of the strongest linemen in the conference. OT Ted Mayberry, 4-stars Lovejoy (Lovejoy, GA) National Rank: 121, Regional: 24, Position: 9 Scouts expect him to become a devastating run blocker in the future. He has the basic foundation necessary to reach a level of agility most big guys can only dream about. When he learns to release his aggression on the field, he will be incredibly difficult to handle. This is a kid who should be able to bulk up in college and become pretty strong. OG Mark Johnson, 5-stars Encinal (Alameda, CA) National Rank: 38, Regional: 12, Position: 4 Scouts expect him to become a devastating run blocker in the future. When he puts it all together, he will be considered one of the best pass blockers in the game. With the amount of time he spends working out, he will someday be one of the most agile linemen in the game. These guys tend to be strong but this kid might set a new standard for strength by the time he's finished. OG Nick Culpepper, 3-stars Stephenson (Stone Mountain, GA) National Rank: 698, Regional: 158, Position: 41 With the time and effort he puts into it, he should become a better than average pass blocker. With the amount of time he spends working out, he will someday be one of the most agile linemen in the game. Will become very aggressive once he feels more confident in his skills. This guy hits the weights with a passion that will allow him to overmatch many opponents in the future. DT Joe Turner, 5-stars Durand (Durand, IL) National Rank: 47, Regional: 9, Position: 3 This kid really seems to 'get it' and I believe he will become an awesome force against the run. This kid's tackling ability is going to keep improving until he is one of the best in the league. Speed won't ever be outstanding but he should have enough to play the position. His teammates think he will someday be one of the strongest players in the nation. DT Carroll McLeod, 4-stars Umatilla (Umatilla, FL) National Rank: 159, Regional: 35, Position: 16 Most scouts project that he will grow into one of the best pass rushers in the college game. He could eventually be one of the best run stuffers this conference has ever seen. He is always in high gear and I expect him to become one of the more aggressive players you'll see. He'll develop some nice strength for his position and it will benefit his overall game. DE Tony Mitchell, 5-stars Holmes CC (MS), Manning, SC, HS - SC National Rank: 1, Regional: 1, Position: 1 Has the strength and quickness that will help him become an unstoppable pass rusher. He could be as good against the run as any defensive end in the conference. He's a relentless, physical player who should turn out to be a tremendous tackler. By the time he's finished, he'll have the type of agility that really stands out for a guy his size. DE Robaire Cook, 4-stars New Holstein (New Holstein, WI) National Rank: 149, Regional: 29, Position: 15 He has room to grow as a pass rusher, but I think he will eventually be one of the best. Has the combination of power and speed to someday be a reliable end against the run. Has the potential to be one of the fastest defensive ends in the country. He works out like a maniac and the results should be amazing by the time his career is over. DE Ray Brown, 4-stars Itawamba CC (MS), Birmingham, AL, HS - AL National Rank: 175, Regional: 38, Position: 17 He has room to grow as a pass rusher, but I think he will eventually be one of the best. Give him a little more time in the weight room and he'll be one of the best tacklers in the conference. As he lets his instincts take over, he will become a much more aggressive player. He likes to hang out in the weight room and that time will pay dividends down the road. OLB Ron Blount, 4-stars Laney (Augusta, GA) National Rank: 260, Regional: 54, Position: 23 It appears that he has the potential to be a pretty speedy outside linebacker. He'll eventually develop into one of the more aggressive linebackers you will see. By the time his tackling ability reaches its peak, there may not be anyone better. With more time on the practice field, it is likely he will become an excellent coverage linebacker. OLB Bob Adams, 4-stars Alhambra (Phoenix, AZ) National Rank: 145, Regional: 37, Position: 14 Coaches feel he has a knack for rushing the QB and will be a disruptive force in the future. It's a good bet that he will have above average linebacker strength by the time he leaves school. By the time his tackling ability reaches its peak, there may not be anyone better. He's a tireless worker who feels he can develop into a good coverage guy with a little more time. OLB Jeff McWilliams, 3-stars Northwest Christian Academy (Miami, FL) National Rank: 326, Regional: 74, Position: 28 From what he's shown so far, he should end up having good speed for a linebacker. He has aggressive tendencies that will make him be a force to be reckoned with in the future. By the time his tackling ability reaches its peak, there may not be anyone better. As he gains more experience at this level, his sideline to sideline coverage ability will be remarkable. CB Rick Cason, 5-stars Taylor County (Butler, GA) National Rank: 71, Regional: 12, Position: 6 He's still working on it but eventually his ability to blitz from the corner will disrupt a lot of QB's Really concentrates on overall athleticism which will help him develop agility at a high level. With more repititions, he'll become a pretty good tackler. If he keeps working hard, he should end up being solid in zone coverage. CB Jim Biekert, 4-stars Pearl River (Pearl River, LA) National Rank: 254, Regional: 52, Position: 21 Still learning but, in time, he'll be an excellent blitzing corner. When he maxes out, his speed is going to be something people will pay to see. You will eventually see the type of agility in this kid that only the best corners possess. He loves the tip drill in practice and his ability to get turnovers will help his team down the road. FS Danny Wynn, 5-stars Pine Forest (Pensacola, FL) National Rank: 44, Regional: 9, Position: 3 I see no reason his blitzing ability can't grow to the point where it really enhances his game. To a man, coaches say this kid has the potential to become the best one on one cover safety in America. This kid has the type of body that will allow him to develop very special agility skills over time. He loves to work and down the road he's going to have very solid strength for a safety. SS Don Herndon, 5-stars Fort Scott CC (KS), Holton, KS, HS - KS National Rank: 75, Regional: 16, Position: 12 Disrupting the quarterback via the blitz is something he will be excellent at in the future. Over time, he's expected to develop the type of speed that is very rare at the safety position. With a little more time on the field, he should develop into a top notch zone coverage guy. He'll develop a decent feel for playing safety but will never have great instincts. K Matt Davenport, 2-stars Hollywood Christian (Hollywood, FL) National Rank: 1486, Regional: 363, Position: 17 This guy has the desire and work ethic needed to develop some very nice leg strength someday. He takes coaching advice very well and should eventually get his accuracy up to a solid level. When he gets it all figured out, coaches will love this kid because of his unbelieveable consistency. With more experience, he'll be able to handle any type of kickoff as well as any kicker you will find.
