Despite the financial turmoil surrounding the company, the WWF expands it's PPV coverage into Mexico and Australia in May...Lex Luger bulks up to Big Heavyweight and many assume that his (even more than usual) jacked up physique is the result of steroid or HGH usage, though this is never confirmed...despite the "purge" of the roster, the financial troubles and a disappointing PPV main event between Ultimate Warrior and HBK, the WWF puts on it's best month of shows in sometime, thanks in no small part to the booking of Paul Ellering...for the first time since his early days in Mid-South, the Ultimate Warrior turns heel, teaming with Razor Ramon in a series of tag matches in a feud against various combinations of HBK, Diesel and Booker T...

http://i.imgur.com/gyBcKKd.jpg

The WWF champ turns his back on all his "little Warriors" but he hangs onto the belt in May

...Booker T gets his best run of main event matches during the feud, but loses every single one of them...Warrior defeats HBK at Last Gasp 97 on PPV in a surprisingly poor match (77)...match of the month goes to Lex Luger defeating the Undertaker on Smackdown! (94)

Despite a few good TV offerings, overall WCW stumbles with some mediocre shows in May...Hogan gets a rare marquee match, teaming with Jericho in a losing effort for the WCW Tag Team titles against Ric Flair & Arn Anderson at Slamboree 1997...Stevie Ray & Sting defeat the Horsemen in a non-title match on Nitro! in the match of the month (95)...Raven & Cactus Jack enter into an entertaining feud with Steve Austin and Jake Roberts...

http://i.imgur.com/ZZtOt3U.jpg

Raven and Cactus Jack cut a promo on Jake Roberts and Steve Austin...part of one of the most entertaining feuds in wrestling right now

...one of the most surprising title changes in recent memory takes place at Slamboree 1997 as the nearly 40 year old Road Warrior Hawk cleanly pins Own Hart to win the WCW World title...

http://i.imgur.com/oreCbrI.png

Road Warrior Hawk shocks the world and wins the WCW World title!

...Hawk would defend the title 10 times over the remainder of 1997, facing only three challengers, Owen Hart (3 times), Arn Anderson (4 times) and Raven (3 times)

Pioneering African-American wrestling legend Bobo Brazil passes away of natural causes at the age of 73

Dusty Rhodes leaves the WWF and returns to WCW as a colour commentator

After their recent fall to Cult size, CMLL shakes things up by bringing in legendary wrestler El Canek as their new head booker

With the retirement of JD Green, the decision to put the NWA World title on Greg Valentine and top stars The Rock, Stevie Richards and Kendall Windham leaving to join RPW, the NWA suffers from a predictable and immediate drop in show quality...Scotty Riggs becomes a main eventer...Tommy Dreamer feuds with Ricky Morton...Greg Valentine defeats Mark Henry at the big end of the month show to retain the title in an awful main event (44)

In ECW, no major title changes...Tommy Dreamer, Johnny Grunge and Buff Bagwell continue to carry the company putting on great matches night in and night out

World Champion Hawk.....WHHAAATTTT AAAA RRRRUUUUSSSHHH!!!!

While I am personally a fan of the Road Warriors, as well as both Brian Pillman and Owen Hart, the WCW World title has now gone from Ric Flair to Bret Hart to Pillman to Owen to Hawk...in terms of the status of the title holders that's kind of a backwards progression, especially considering Hawk is almost a decade past his prime and his peak of popularity...still, cool to see these guys get a world title run even if it is in a game

We have a way better scenario for Brian Pillman than what happened in RL! First he became World Champ...then starts dating Pam Anderson! He is fulfilling all of my boy hood dreams!

I'm pretty sure for most who grew up in this time period dating Pam Anderson would be considered "fulfilling a boy hood dream" :D

Still I do enjoy seeing Pillman and for that matter Owen having long main event careers with at least one run each with a World title...and as far as US wrestling goes, the WCW belt is the most prestigious World title...also kind of weird seeing Hulk Hogan fade into obscurity as an over paid, aging mid carder and HHH fail to make any impact whatsoever on wrestling (at least as of early 1998 he hasn't)...and then of course there is Buff Bagwell - ECW Superstar!

July 1997

(OOC: I guess I should mention that RPW starts as a Cult level promotion...I used Vince McMahon as my avatar and started a new promotion on easy, which gives you a company at Cult with a popularity of 60 in all your home regions)

http://i.imgur.com/iiRkeiq.jpg

1-2-3 Kid makes his way to the ring for what may be the final match of his career

...Goldust and Shawn Michaels have a pair of fantastic matches in July, with Goldust winning on PPV (99) and HBK winning on Smackdown! (97)...Somehow, the Undertaker and Honky Tonk Man have a surprisingly good match against Ricky Morton and Jeff Jarrett on PPV (82) with Undertaker and HTM winning to defend the WWF Tag Team titles...Ultimate Warrior defeats Diesel in the main event of No Law No Order 97 to retain the WWF World title

Rey Misterio Jr has a bad attitude...wait what? He is probably only 18 or 19 at the time which makes that complete BS.... The only way I see that happening is if Pyschosis took him under his wing.

iirc he started a backstage argument, then gave me the "whatever" when I scolded him and his moral went in the tank...as of July 1997, Misterio is 22 and a six year veteran having been active since the game started in 1994...checking his sliders in the editor I'm guessing his selfish and/or boldness has moved to the left since the game began giving him a bad attitude and causing him to be something of a trouble maker...he also doesn't like Luna Vachon and got fired from the WWF in April 97 for failing a drug test (hard drugs)...doesn't look like Rey is going to have a great career but we shall see as time goes on

God that real world can be a real pain in the ass of any dynasty writer. I think Rob Thomas got it spot on when he penned the lyrics "I wish the real world would just stop hasslin' me."

Seriously though, take your time, we'll be here for you when you get around to it. The absolute last thing you want to do is burn yourself out, as I found on my last dynasty.

http://i.imgur.com/kEpnm0t.jpg

Steve Austin defeats Bret Hart (IN CANADA!) on WCW Saturday Night in an amazing match (97)...2 nights later on Nitro!, Hart loses again but in an even better match, falling to old rival Jake Roberts (98)...

Bret Hart may not hold any titles, but he's arguably WCW's MVP so far in 1997

...the Giant sinks even further, losing to Steve Doll at Fall Brawl 97...ironically, The Giant's last win was one year ago on the pre-show of Fall Brawl 96, in a six man tag team match......still, it's better than Hulk Hogan who doesn't appear at all on TV or PPV in August...

http://i.imgur.com/3CPAfuV.jpg

Hogan's career continues to fade...maybe it's time to start selling PastaMania again!

Dreamer vs Grunge and Bagwell vs Pitbull #2 continue to be the top feuds in ECW...The Harris Brothers upset Tommy Dreamer and Mikey Whipwreck in the main event of ECW Hardcore Heaven 1997
