Herb's Purdue Boilermakers

2005 The Purdue Boliermakers are expecting great things for the 2005 NCAA football season. Herb DeSpain has taken over as the head coach and he has a veteran team that is expected to contend for the Big 10 title. Senior quarterback Gordie Uwaezuoke gets his first chance as the starter and he'll be flanked by a deep stable of runners that includes senior Jashon Newland, junior JaJuan Peete, and true freshman Clifton Shabazz. Uwaezuoke has plenty of talent to throw to as well with All-American candidates TE Keion McMullen and WR Hakell Brown. The O-Line is suspect so Uwaezuoke will have to get the ball out quick or run for his life. The defense is led by senior DE Del Marsh and junior CB Hannibal Sellers. #9 Purdue @ Hawaii The Boilers open up a bit sluggish in their first game for new head coach Herb DeSpain but things start to click during a late first half surge. Leading just 7-3 with 2:19 left in the first half Uwaezuoke hit Haskel Brown for a 10 yard score. The Boilers D forced a quick three and out and Purdue got the ball back with just 59 seconds on the clock. Twenty-seven seconds later Uwaezuoke found Sophomore Peppi Papac for a 16 yard touchdown and the Boilers carried a 21-3 lead into halftime. Uwaezuoke would hook up with Papac late in the third for a 70 yard bomb for the game's final score. #23 Colorado @ #9 Purdue This game shoudl provide a real test for the Boilers heading into Big 10 play. The offense is soulnd but the defense has not looked sharp in practice this week. The Boilers come out smoking hot on offense with a four play, 80 yard drive that was finished up by a spectacular 56 yard run by J. Newland on second and 10. It seemed as if all 11 guys on the Colorado defense had at least a hand on him but he ran through them all for the score. Colorado moved the ball on the next possession but stalled at the 17 and had to settle for a 27 yard FG. Purdue senior QB G. Uwaezuoke was hurt on the second play of the next drive and sophomore B. Birdwell got the call to take his place. On the very next play Birdwell used play action to hold the defense and then threw a perfect strike to Junior WR Haskell Brown streaking down the right sideline for a touchdown. The route was on! Birdwell would later leave with an injury but third stringer junior K. Nagle would come in to throw for 180 yards. The Purdue defense gave up a lot of yards(373) but forced Colorado to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns. A defensive effort like this will not fare well in two weeks when Purdue visits Wisconsin to open the Big 10 season. #8 Purdue @ #20 Wisconsin The Purdue coaching staff's fears were quickly realized as Wisconsin dominated the Boilers in every aspect and jumped out to a 16-3 first quarter lead. The Purdue defense looked confused while the offense was predictable even with the return of senior Gordie Uwaezuoke who had been injured in early in the Colorado game. Badgers' junior RB Merceda Phillips was spectacular in every aspect of the game accounting for 223 total yards(134 RUSH/89 REC) and picking up key blocks when the Boilers did decide to blitz. The entire Boiler team only had 286 yards of total offense. #20 Purdue @ #14 Ohio State Reserve OL Barrett Vereb blocked the game tying extra point with less than three minutes left in the game to preserve the Boilermaker victory. Ohio State came back from a 28-0 first half hole to nearly take the game into overtime. JaShon Newland rushed for a career high 181 yards and three scores including runs of 45 and 62 yards to lead the Boilers. Hopalong Riddick of Ohio State almost matched Newland yard for yard with a 178 yards and two scores on 23 carries. Buckeyes' QB MacArthur Brohm also threw for three scores. Purdue sophomore WR Peppi Papac silenced the Columbus crowd with a spectacular 63 yard punt return for a touchdown with just under six seconds to go in the first half to put the Boilers up 28-0. The crowd slowly got back into the game and was at full force again when Vereb made his game saving play. Northwestern @ #15 Purdue The visiting Wildcats held Purdue scoreless for the first quarter and actually held the lead at 6-3 until Boiler QB Gordie Uwaezuoke hit freshman Courtland Gordon for a 59 yard score with 37 seconds left in the first half to give Purdue a 10-6 halftime lead. Senior RB JaShon Newland took over the third quarter with scoring runs of 16 and 50 yards to give Purdue a omfortable 24-6 lead. In the fourth quarter the teams traded punt returns for touchdowns. First Northwestern's Spec LeVias took one back from 71 yards then Purdue's Peppi Papac returned one for an 88 yard score. Papac's touchdown return, his second of the season, is second longest in Purdue history bested only by Phil Mateja's 92 yard return in 1951. With the game in hand coach Herb DeSpain turned to the bench for most of the fourth quarter and junior RB JaJuan Peete responded with 144 yards in 14 carries including a 50 yard touchdown run that finished off the scoring for the day. It was the 27th time in Purdue football history that it posted two 100 yard rushers in the same game, the first time since 2002. #8 Purdue @ Minnesota The Boilers dominated Minnesota in every way except the final score. Purdue had more yards, first downs, and time of possession but two key turnovers in the second half did them in. Leading 20-13 late in the third quarter reserve LB Ira Drayton scooped up a Haskell Brown fumble and returned it 14 yards for the tying score. On the Gophers' next possession QB Van Homan hit Sonjay Fernandez for a spectacular 87 yard score to take a 27-20 lead. With just over a minute left inthe fourth and the Boilers driving, LB Clifton Jurgonsen stepped in front of a Gordie Uwaezuoke pass inteded for TE Keion McMullen and returned it 39 yards for the clinching touchdown. Fernandez finished the game with 203 yards receiving while McMullen hauled in 178 yards. JaShon Newland chewed up 115 yards on the ground for Purdue for his fourth consecutive 100 yard effort. #12 South Bend @ #15 Purdue The Fighting Irish erased a eight point half time lead by scoring 10 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a 22-21 lead. The Boilers retook the lead halfway through the fourth quarter on a Uwaezuoke to Papac nine yard score. A two point conversion gave Purdue a seven point lead 29-22. South Bend took the ball and marched down the field to tie the game on a 14 yard scoring toss from Hannam to Trippi with less than two minutes to play. The Irish defense held Purdue to a three and out and took over on their own 22 with 43 seconds left to play. Two plays, two timeouts, 28 seconds, and 65 yards later the Irish were lining up for a 30 yard field goal. Senior Vernon Weldon calmly lined up and kicked his fourth field goal of the day as South Bend took a 32-29 lead with just eight seconds left to secure the victory. #25 Purdue @ #1 Michigan Attempting to stop a two game losing streak Purdue headed into the Big House to face the #1 Wolverines. Purdue jumped out to an early 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter but found themselves down 24-14 on the strength of three consecutive Michigan scores in the second quarter. The Wolverins stretched their lead to 31-14 with a quick third quarter touchdown on a 63 yard pass from Bubby Moser to Robbie Bahnsen. Purdue finally woke up in the third to score two straight touchdowns the first on JaShon Newland's second score of the game and a Uwaezuoke to Rufus Wright 13 yard score. The teams traded the ball back and fourth in the the final quarter with michigan holding onto a slim 31-27 lead. Purdue's final drive of the day was prolonged by a defensive holding penalty that negated a Michigan interception that would have sealed the game for the Wolverines. Instead Purdue continued to charge down the field and Uwaezuoke ran a qb sneak from the three yardline on second down for the final score of the game and a huge Purdue upset of #1 Michigan. Newland finished with 96 yards while Uwaezuoke was named POG with 357 yards and scores in the air to go with his game winning run. Michigan State @ #15 Purdue The Boilers hoped to avoid a letdown following their stunning upset of #1 Michigan last week and the coaching staff was not disappointed. Purdue came out a little stiff scoring just six points in the first quarter on two Hanford Gannon field goals. Michigan State lead briefly at 7-6 following a Pinkett scoring run but a 42 yard fumble return for a touchdown by CB Hannibal Sellers put the Boilers back in front 14-13. The Spartans and the Boilers traded the lead again before halftime with Purdue entering the intermission with a slim 16-14 lead. The second half was a different story as Purdue jumped on Michigan State for 25 consecutive points over a span of just over 15 minutes to give the Boilers a commanding 41-14 lead. Michigan State added nine late points to make it seem closer than it really was. The Purdue defense forced eight fumbles(including four by Pinckett) recovering three to go with one interception. JaShon Newland picked up 122 yards and two scores on the ground giving him 1154 yards and 12 touchdowns on the year. Indiana @ #8 Purdue After a two week layoff the Boilers hosted in-state rival Indiana for senior day. The Boilers came out sluggish and Indiana scored on their first possession when WR Clayton Mahdavi got behind the Purdue secondary and hauled in an Austin Finks pass for a 61 yard score and a 7-0 lead. Purdue answered with a 65 yard scoring run by JaShon Newland but a missed extra point left the Boilers in a 7-6 hole. Two IU field goals and one by Purdue ended the first half scoring and Indiana entered the half with a 13-9 lead and hopes of a major upset. The Boilers regrouped at halftime and came out motivated scoring three times in the second half while holding the Hoosiers scoreless for for the 30-13 final. In the game Newland rushed for 192 yards breaking the Purdue single season rushing and rushing attempts record with 1500 and 273 respectively. Ourback Bowl in Tampa, FL #16 Georgia vs #6 Purdue The Boilers entered halftime with a stout 31-10 lead over the Bulldogs on the strength of two JaShon Newland TD runs and two Gordie Uwaezuoke scoring tosses. After Uwaezuoke found Peppi Papac for a 44 yard touchdown with 1:27 left in the third quarter the Boiler faithful began to celebrate. The game was never in doubt although Georgia did score 10 late points to make the score somewhat respectable. The Boilermakers used Newland to run time off the clock in the second half and with the exception of the TD pass to Papac didn't even look downfield. Newland(125 rush yds/2 TD) and Uwaezuoke(319 yards/3 TD) shared MVP honors as the Boilers finished the year 10-3. 2006 Preseason The Boilers open the 2006 season ranked #6 in the AP Poll and #8 in the coaches poll. The board expects us to contend for a Big Ten title and finish in the top 12 in the country. schedule @ Iowa State vs UCLA OPEN @ #15 Notre Dame vs #9 Wisconsin @ #14 Penn State @ #18 Ohio State vs #1 Michigan @ #21 Minnesota vs #16 Michigan State vs Northwestern OPEN OPEN vs Indiana vs Ball State As you can see the Big Ten is stacked and it'll be a tough road for the Boilers after losing the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and their starting QB to graduation.
