UFC 6: Clash of the Titans Recap

Robert Lucarelli (2-1) def. Ernie Verdicia (0-1) via Split Decision after 30:00; a slug fest from the start, Lucarelli and Verdicia show little technique as they brawl with each other for nearly thirty minutes. Lucarelli narrowly scores the win

Paul Varelans (1-0) def. Cal Worsham (0-1) via Technical Knockout (Strikes) in 12:57; the big three-hundred pound Varelans only needed one big shot to put his opponent on the mat, and when he did he pounced, looking for a quick victory

Oleg Taktarov (7-2) def. Dave Beneteau (0-1) via Submission (Triangle) in 9:02; the Russian import shows off his technique off of his back as he counters a takedown attempt into a triangle choke for the impressive victory

Rudyard Moncayo (1-0) def. Roland Payne (0-2) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 21:17; though Payne was winning the fight, he gassed out badly, and was left vulnerable to the choke

David 'Tank' Abbott (1-0) def. David Levicki (0-2) via Technical Knockout (Strikes) in 5:00; Abbott wastes little time in taking Levicki to the mat and pounding his face in until the referee was forced to step in

Dan Severn (2-1) def. Ali Gipson (1-1) via Unanimous Decision after 30:00; Severn uses his wrestling defensively to out-jab his opponent for the entirety of the match, final strike count being an astounding 598-to-122. Severn shows that he can work on his feet and he may have some claim to a rematch with Royce Gracie as of this evening

Jason DeLucia (3-1) def. Guy Mezger (2-1) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 11:15; a huge upset as DeLucia scores a takedown and Mezger makes one wrong move by giving up his back, and subsequently the choke

Bas Rutten (5-0) def. Gerard Gordeau (2-2) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 6:12; Rutten shows off his entire arsenal on the feet and on the mat this evening, and as evidenced by his post-fight interview, he has only one man on his mind: Royce Gracie

Royce Gracie (6-0) def. Patrick Smith (3-2) via Submission (Arm-Bar) in 1:43 to defend his UFC Superfight Championship; Smith had zero for Gracie this evening, he looked timid and uncomfortable before the bell even rung. Gracie shoots for the takedown and gets the easy submission win

Pancrase 17 Recap

Robert Bjornethun (2-3) def. Jeff Massagli (0-1) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; a much needed win for Bjornethun, who out-strikes the newcomer 73-to-22 with a varied offense made up of kicks, knees and punches

Christopher De Weaver (1-0) def. Emmanuel Yarborough (1-2) via Submission (Triangle) in 9:43; the lanky New Yorker is impressive in his debut, showing off a wide variety of offense both on the feet and on the mat against a very large opponent in Yarborough

Hans Nijman (1-1) def. Zane Frasier (1-3) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; Nijan out-strikes Frasier in a fairly uneventful match

Gregory Smit (2-2) def. James Mathews (3-4) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 7:21; Mathews faced off with former teammate from Yokohama Shooting Gym and was submitted with relative ease. The move to Grabaka was evidently not the best move for him, career-wise

Akihiro Gono (3-2) def. Richard Saar (2-2) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; active on both the feet and on the mat, Gono out-classes his opponent everywhere as Saar looked uncomfortable from the very beginning

Vernon White (4-5) def. Scott Sullivan (2-2) via Submission (Arm-Bar) in 3:59; White makes his first appearance since January and makes quick work of Sullivan, one more win and White could be looking at a title shot, as he is currently riding a two-fight winning streak

Frank Shamrock (3-0) def. Enson Inoue (2-1) via Submission (Arm-Triangle) in 4:35; a grappling heavy match, Shamrock out-muscles Inoue on the mat to score a quick submission victory without throwing a single punch

Minoru Suzuki (6-3) def. Masakatsu Funaki (5-6) via Submission (North South Choke) in 11:54; Suzuki scores the first north-south choke victory in the history of the sport as he finishes a very tough Masakatsu Funaki. The match was very competitive from the start but Funaki again failed to utilize his best skill, his wrestling, and elected to try and stand with Suzuki. Suzuki would then score the first takedown and control the pace of the match from that point onward

Rickson Gracie (8-2) def. Matt Hume (3-3) via Submission (Achilles Lock) in 0:49; in what might be the quickest victory in mixed martial arts history, Gracie taps out Matt Hume, who was supposed to offer him a bigger challenge than his previous opponents who were considered easy match-ups for Gracie. Providing Renzo does not win this evening, Rickson is definitely in the running for the next shot at the title

Renzo Gracie (7-1) def. Manabu Yamada (14-5-2) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 14:45 to win the King of Pancrase Championship; Renzo made Manabu Yamada look like a completely different fighter than we'd previously seen. Yamada had very little to offer the challenger, who took him down at will and imposed his game plan for the entirety of the match

Pancrase 18 Recap

Pedro Otavio (2-1) def. Eugenio Tadeu (3-3) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; Otavio out-grapples Tadeu to a dominant unanimous decision victory despite having a little trouble early on in the stand-up exchanges

Toon Stelling (2-2) def. Leon van Dijk (0-3) via Submission (Arm-Triangle) in 1:46; Stelling gets back-to-back victories here with a quick submission victory that will probably result in van Dijk receiving his walking papers

Jorge Patino (1-1) def. John Renfroe (0-2) via Submission (Arm-Bar) in 2:21; John Renfroe will also be likely to receive his walking papers after being badly defeated by the much faster, and more technical Jorge Patino

Takaku Fuke (3-4) def. Satoshi Honma (3-5-2) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; Takaku Fuke out-strikes Satoshi Honma 301-to-95 over the course of fifteen minutes as he plays spoiler to Honma's long awaited return to the ring

Alex Cook (2-1) def. Takafumi Ito (1-2) via Submission (Arm-Bar) in 2:38; Cook gets a big win that keeps his name in the rankings over a very game Takafumi Ito. Cook shows he can hang with a tough grappler and is likely to get a top ten opponent in his next appearance

Allan Goes (2-0) def. Amaury Bitetti (2-1) via Submission (Kimura) in 4:23; Goes gets himself the alternate designation after an excellent display of jiu-jitsu as he stayed composed and eventually beat the highly touted Bitetti

Tsuyoshi Kohsaka (2-1) def. Katsuomi Inagaki (4-6) via Submission (Neck Crank) in 1:43; Kohsaka books himself a trip to the semi-finals with a flawless victory over a very tough Katsuomi Inagaki

Teila Tuli (6-2) def. Ryushi Yanagisawa (3-5) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; Tuli shows off his takedown defense as he beats the hometown fighter, Tuli gets himself a spot in the semi-finals and will look to climb back into title contention

Wallid Ismail (6-3) def. Jose Landi-Jons (4-4) via Submission (Kimura) in 1:45; Ismail was getting out-struck to start the fight and adjusted his game plan accordingly, bringing the fight to the mat and scoring a quick submission to book himself a trip to the semi-finals

Murilo Bustamante (7-1) def. Marco Ruas (5-2-1) via Split Decision after 15:00; a bad call by the judges, Ruas held top control and out-struck Bustamante yet his opponent was awarded the victory and slot in the semi-finals. Expect Pancrase bookers to award Ruas a spot as second designated alternate in the event that two fighters are injured in the tournament

UFC 7: The Brawl in Buffalo Recap

Mark Hall (1-0) def. Larry Cureton (0-2) via Unanimous Decision after 30:00; Hall outwrestles Cureton in a dominant display of top control from the newcomer.

Jon Hess (1-1) def. Melton Bowen (0-2) via Knockout (Punch) in 2:01; one big right hand was all it took to put away Melton Bowen, who had little to offer the significantly bigger Jon Hess.

Scott Baker (2-1) def. Kimo Leopoldo (0-2) via Submission (Arm-Bar) in 11:05; Kimo's lack of cardio would lead to his defeat this evening as Baker withstood an early attack from the big man in order to win it in the deep water.

Frank Hamaker (2-1) def. Keith Hackney (1-2) via Submission (Guillotine Choke) in 2:06; Hamaker pins Hackney against the cage and slaps on a guillotine choke to score the quick victory.

Jason Fairn (2-1) def. Trent Jenkins (1-2) via Technical Knockout (Strikes) in 5:31; Fairn wrestles his way to a win here as he quickly brings Jenkins to the mat in order to pound him out for a relatively quick victory.

Eldo Dias Xavier (2-0) def. Anthony Macias (1-1) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 3:04; complete domination from Xavier from the start, Macias looked like he didn't want to be in there either. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, Macias tapped out.

Joe Charles (2-0) def. Scott Morris (1-2) via Knockout (Punch) in 2:55; a fight that took place exclusively standing, Charles lands a massive right straight that sends Morris to the canvas, stiff as a board.

Fabio Gurgel (4-1) def. Harold Howard (2-1) via Submission (Arm-Triangle) in 1:41; Howard was supposed to face off with Royce Gracie earlier this year for the Superfight championship, and he injured himself prior to the match. As a result, he was forced to risk his standing as contender to Fabio Gurgel and had he not injured himself, he could've been champion instead of on the losing end of a one-sided beating.

Bas Rutten (6-0) def. Dan Severn (2-2) via Unanimous Decision after 30:00; Bas controls the match from the bottom, using hard elbows and punches and although Severn was on top for the bulk of the match, the judges ruled Bas Rutten was the victor in the end.

Royce Gracie (7-0) def. Oleg Taktarov (7-3) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 2:42 to defend his UFC Superfight Championship; Royce Gracie shows his skills with another flawless performance against a very tough Oleg Taktarov. The real question now, is whether or not the UFC will finally match him up with the undeniable number one contender, Bas Rutten.

Pancrase 19 Recap

Jeff Massagli (1-1) def. Art Jimmerson (1-4) via Knockout (Punch) in 9:08; Massagli was getting out-boxed by Jimmerson for the majority of the match but was never in any danger of being knocked unconscious. Jimmerson, on the other hand, was on wobbly legs after the first clean right that Massagli was able to land and never fully recovered.

Tony Halme (1-2) def. Alberto Cerra Leon (0-3) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; boring, uneventful fight that more than likely spells termination for Leon.

Ebenezer Fontes Braga (1-0) def. Larry Papadopoulos (0-3) via Submission (Arm-Bar) in 6:08; very impressive performance from Braga, and Papadopoulos will most likely be receiving his walking papers as well for his third consecutive loss.

Richard Saar (3-2) def. Scott Sullivan (2-3) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; slight robbery in some people's eyes, Sullivan controlled the fight with volume but Saar was a little more active in the clinch. In a fight like this, nobody really wins.

Matt Hume (4-3) def. Rumina Sato (2-2) via Technical Knockout (Strikes) in 11:21; these two wrestled competitively for almost ten minutes before Hume started to use his hands as a difference maker. His ground and pound was used very efficiently and was able to score him the stoppage victory.

Masakatsu Funaki (6-6) def. Enson Inoue (2-2) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 4:29; Funaki is so good on the ground when he brings it there, and he showed why he is constantly in title talks if he could just follow a game plan instead of standing and trading. Inoue tried to make it a stand up fight and was promptly brought to the mat where Funaki went to work on him. Funaki hasn't strung together two wins in a row since September of 1994 and if he could capitalize on this victory to make it two in a row it would make for a good spot in the rankings.

Minoru Suzuki (7-3) def. Hans Nijman (1-2) via Submission (North South Choke) in 13:31; two straight victories, two by North South Choke (and the first one was the first in MMA history). Minoru Suzuki thoroughly dominates Hans Nijman en route to an impressive submission victory.

Vernon White (5-5) def. Akihiro Gono (3-3) via Unanimous Decision after 15:00; White out strikes and out wrestles Gono for a convincing decision victory. That's three wins in a row for White and that could mean a title shot given the current promotional landscape.

Frank Lobman (2-0) def. Maurice Smith (3-3) via Knockout (Kick) in 0:54; Lobman and Smith had time to each throw one jab before Lobman connected with the knockout kick. Smith fell over and that was all she wrote, in what could possibly be the biggest upset in Pancrase history.

Nilson de Castro (7-0) def. Renzo Gracie (7-2) via Split Decision after 30:00 to win the King of Pancrase Championship; de Castro's victory over Gracie is almost as big an upset as Lobman over Smith, but in this fight both men showed off a very well rounded, diverse offense. de Castro & Gracie both scored takedowns, stood and swung at each other and went for submissions, with de Castro narrowly pulling away with the victory.
