UFC inks pay-per-view deal with SET, reveals card for the first event

DENVER, CO -- The Ultimate Fighting Championship, in connection with WOW Promotions and William Viola II, has penned a massive ten-show deal with SET to bring the re-birthed sport of 'ultimate fighting' to pay-per-view. In a press statement, Viola claims to be euphoric towards the reception that the UFC and the visions he, Art Davie and Rorion Gracie has presented.

The first event, simply titled The Ultimate Fighting Championship, will bring a long-standing Brazilian rivalry to the US public as Rickson Gracie makes his debut on American pay-per-view against Casemiro Nascimento Martins, otherwise known as Rei Zulu. These two warriors have already faced twice before, each time with Rickson Gracie coming out the victor. In Violas more polished martial arts world, will Martins fare any better or will he fall to another clinical submission hold?

Also featured on the card will be younger and untested Royce Gracie, spearheading the only Lightweight division fight against Colorado native and kick boxer Trent Jenkins. On Royce, Rorion mentions that he was handpicked to represent the Gracie family because of his exceptional skill and mastery in the arts of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

In addition, a host of other styles will be represented - everything from sumo to savate has a place in the UFC universe. Likewise, many different nationalities are joined within the cage, making the first UFC card a true international affair. The full fight card can be seen here.

<table border=0 width=710><tbody><tr><td>THE BRAZILIAN INVASION

Gracie clan reigns supreme as UFC ranks both Rickson and Royce at the top of the respective weight classes

DENVER, CO -- With the roaring success of the first UFC event, both representatives of UFC Viola II, Davie and Gracie and SET representatives are eager to return to Denver for another round of ultimate fighting at the first given opportunity. It does not come without controversy however, as many a more conservative viewer have already filed public contempt of the violent action on display. In particular was noted the fight between Savate champion Gerard Gordeau against sumo-wrestler Teila Tuli as Tuli reportedly left the arena without a full set of teeth. One spectator reports a tooth flying out into the crowd.

Others are pointing towards the 'unsportsmanlike conduct' and 'hateful approach' to ones opponent, as some fighters did not touch gloves while others, Patrick Smith in particular, suffered a fit of rage after tapping to Oleg Taktarovs choke submission and nearly backhanded the calm Russian Sambo player after the fight had been stopped.

Viola II has come to the defense of the rules, saying that the fighters are well-protected by the book but that he, nor the UFC, can be held responsible for the conduct of the fighters themselves. A short and concise message as the UFC promises more action in the new year, saying that both Royce and Rickson will return at the second UFC event to defend their top-ranked spots.

When asked if there were any plans for possible championship belts to determine the best of the best, Art Davie only let a vague comment slide about a possibility but nothing they are considering at the moment. "We want the focus to be on the styles fight right now", Davie said.

FROM AROUND THE WORLD

- Prominent kickboxer Maurice Smith reportedly training BJJ with Gracie clan in California

Thank for the interest, LeBlancX! I decided not to do a prediction contest this time around as here in the early days of the UFC, the results will be kind of predictable. In the future though, I hope to figure out some interesting prizes and such to conjure up some business, so to speak. Also, I wanted to ask whoever is reading, is a report format like this acceptable? Month-to-month? There isn't much to write about from a game perspective so it won't be every month but there is going to be one for January 1994 as well. Do you want more detail? Less detail? More results? I am open to suggestions. Thank you for reading!</td></tr></tbody></table>

<table border=0 width=710><tbody><tr><td>RETURN TO THE CAGE

The UFC returns to Colorado with another double main event featuring the Gracie clan

DENVER, CO -- The Ultimate Fighting Championship invites SET and the public back into the cage, this coming March. A press release from the UFC revealed this earlier today as well as showing a detailed fight card along with updated rankings. Both have been copied into our monthly magazine as spreads, seen here and here, respectively.

The juicy details come as statements from the individual fighters at the press conference, most notable from Japanese karateka Minoki Ichihara who claims that he will knock Royce Gracie out with his striking and completely nullify him in hand-to-hand combat before the two can, "get to rolling around on the mat, pulling each others gi" [freely translated]. Calm and collected, Royce answered this claim by simply saying, "we shall wait and see". Both Colorado natives Trent Jenkins and Patrick Smith were also eager to express themselves, vowing to redeem their less than stellar performances from the first UFC event. Smith in particular noted that he had been working on 'other areas' of his overall fighting game.

When asked about where the dominant Russian, Oleg Taktarov, had disappeared to, Art Davie said that Oleg had urgent business to attend to back home and that a rumored 'superfight' between the Russian and Rickson Gracie in the Heavyweight division, will not materialize in the near future. Art Davie once again stressed that the focus is on styles fights and not fighters against fighters. "The interesting thing to see here is whether martial arts masters match up against each other, not who the best contracted UFC fighter is". Davie was afterwards bombarded with questions regarding why the Gracies then were represent twice at both events but refused to comment further.

The whole thing ended with Davie shutting the press down with, "Just wait till UFC 3!".

FROM AROUND THE WORLD

James Matthews reportedly had a big falling out with Lions Den owner Ken Shamrock and has subsequently left the training center. In regards to martial arts training, Fabio Gurgel is attracting more and more hot names to his Alliance Jiu Jitsu as UFC 1 veteran Nilson de Castro now joins Bustamante, victorious at the latest Desafio event against one Matías Alves, and Marco Ruas under the tutelage of the BJJ black belt. Several of the fighters contracted to appear at UFC 2 have also been spotted at Lions Den; these include main eventer Scott Morris and Fred Ettish. Morris claims to have seen some holes in the Gracie Jiu Jitsu game that he hopes to exploit with coupling Shamrocks shoot wrestling training with this Ninjitsu striking techniques.

INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT

Post-show analysis of UFC 2

DENVER, CO.
-- The second iteration of the Ultimate Fighting Challenge turned out to be a truly international affair that was highlighted, at least for some, by the spectacular victory of several non-American fighters. Both the Gracie-led main events were smathered in rivalrous excitement as both Scott Morris and Minoki Ichihara had promised to used "superior striking" to ruin the legendary Gracie undefeated streak that has reportedly run for many, many years. Evidently, their, Morris' and Ichiharas, claim did not stand the test of reality. Rickson even outstruck his ninjitsu opponent in the first round! Ichihara fared slightly better, perhaps even showing a slight chink in the Gracie armor, but aslo he easily fell to the submission game in the end.

Both Patrick Smith and Trent Jenkins also made up for their shortcomings from the first UFC event, one slightly more dominant than the other. Needless to say, Smiths brutal TKO victory of boxer Lucarelli has garnered him another invitation to a future fight while Jenkins has reportedly cut ties and returned to the kickboxing community. When it concerns referee stoppages, the first Spanish fighter in the UFC, Alberto Cerro Leon, and Dutch judo and BJJ practioner Remco Pardoel, sure made an impact - and not just in their opponents faces. The Spanish Pencak Silat fighter was down the first two rounds but managed a fantastic comeback to win in the third round while Pardoel overcame the mastodon 6'5'' David Levicki, both managing to take him down and TKO'ing him in the very first minutes of the fight.

In the end, it seems that while the pay-per-view itself was successful, Art Davies sentiments before the event seems to have crunched a few live attendees which was down almost 200 people from the last event. Rumors about the return of Oleg Taktarov or Nilson de Castro at UFC 3 are already running rampant but as Davie noted, "Just wait!".

:p
I think I am going with this format from now on, making a post-show analysis with is just UFC-related and then an overall news statement in between shows until more starts happening in the game world. I have a slight suspicion that the inclusion of more game world-related results and news will bring more depth to this dynasty. Stay tuned!

THE GROWTH OF ULTIMATE FIGHTING

Bill Violas brand of martial arts combat is on the rise

NEWS
-- Big news coming from the UFC press officials as Royce Gracie has reportedly suffered a pretty serious groin injury and will not be fighting at UFC 3, against Jason DeLucia as expected. DeLucia has opted to stay in the Lightweight class and take a fight against against French kickboxer Orlando Wiet while the return of Oleg Taktarov to American pay-per-view has been bumped up to the semi-main event spot. With Rickson Gracie facing tae kwon do black belt Kimo Leopoldo, some are beginning to suspect the protection of the Gracie clan, especially given that Rorion Gracie is involved in the business side of the the company. Everyone involved denies this as baseless accusations, though, and Davie that rumors like that is doing a disservice to the fighters themselves and martial arts as a whole.

With the two very successful Ultimate Fighting Championship events being screened across the nation through pay-per-view, 'ultimate fighting' is clearly gaining pace in both martial arts communities and political communities. Namely, promoter of sport spectacle, Roy Vandal, has officially held the worlds first 'ultimate fighting' event outside of the UFC. Extreme Fighting Challenge consisted mostly of UFC veterans and the event itself has garnered attention in more than one way. While Viola has made positive comments that the sport is catching on, more staunch commentators has clung to the fact that the main event ended in brutal knockout in favor of boxer Art Jimmerson. Art KO'ed his opponent, kung fu player Allen DeVille, with a brutal right hand, leading DeVille to be hospitalized after breaking his jaw and experiencing seizures. With the behavior of the fighters from UFC 1 already making some commentators bring the fire, this is surely to evolve the pressure.

Otherwise quietly does the landscape look in Japan, where Pancrase is getting ready to crown its first champion, namely the King Of Pancrase. First linked to the initial title fight was UFC veteran James Matthews against grappling standout, but untested, Akihiro Gono, which seemed quizzical, but an injury suffered by Matthews while training with the Gracies in California postponed that fight. Now Gono will face Vernon White for the title, again something that leaves confusion as White is 1-3 in his Pancrase career. Compared to Violas idea of styles fight, Pancrase employs much more well-rounded 'hybrid fighters' and focuses on fighters against fighters, not styles. Whether this will eventually catch on in the US is doubtful at this time, with Art Davie and Bill Viola at the helm.

The idea of a dedicated 'ultimate fighting' training camp is also winning ground, as undefeated Ken Shamrock, who runs the Lions Den, is slowly attracting an army of different fighters to his facilities. Regular names such as George Weingroff, Scott Morris and Patrick Smith are seen on the roster. With inspiration taken from both Fabio Gurgel's Alliance Jiu Jitsu and the Gracie Academies, Shamrock has said that he wanted to further the art of shoot wrestling and combining it with various striking techniques. Where this experiment will go, nobody knows for certain but it certainly seems to be winning impasse with many martial artists.

Finally, we have taken up the gauntlet of rankings and decided on ten of the worlds top active hybrid- and ultimate fighters. What may not surprise is that the Gracie clan lies solidly on top, followed by the highly touted Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Murilo Bustamante. The full list can be found below.
