Pirates Schedule Home and Home with Wolfpack The East Carolina Pirates and the NC State Wolfpack have agreed to meet this year and next. It is undecided which team will be at home first, but each team will get a shot to be the host. NC State leads East Carolina 14-9 all-time in a series which dates back to 1970, but the Pirates have won four of the last six meetings.

Purdue Doubles Up Pirates The East Carolina Pirates had a tough task in week one, travelling to #11 Purdue. The Boilermakers didn't go easy on the Pirates either, doubling them up 42-21. Purdue got on the board first when Homer Pietrosante hit Bob LoVetere for an 11 YD TD pass at 5:47 in the first quarter. The Boilermakers followed with a Boomer Fenerty 2 YD TD run 13 minutes later. The Pirates got on the board with a 62-yard bomb from Rolland Trudeau to Webster Bech to make it 14-7, but Pudue scored with about a minute left in the half to make it a 21-7 game. In the second half, the teams alternated touchdowns, with a rushing TD by Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal and another TD pass from Trudeau (this time to Mason Kragen) accounting for the Pirates points. The Pirates ran the ball well, with 152 yards on 31 carries (4.9 avg), but they couldn't stop Purdue's ground game as the Boilermakers ran for 275 yards. That was the difference in the game, as each team turned the ball over once and passed for about 280 yards.

Owls Upset Pirates Despite being on the road, the East Carolina Pirates thought they had an easy win in week 2... Instead, they left Boca with a valuable lesson in respecting your opponent. East Carolina fell 20-16 at the hands of the Florida Atlantic Owls. The Pirates fumbled 3 times, but recovered 3 Owls fumbles and picked off Owls QB's 4 times in the ugly game. Despite winning the turnover battle, the timing of one fumble killed the Pirates. With the Pirates up 16-14 and with the ball in FAU territory, ECU quarterback Rolland Trudeau handed off to halfback Harold Putmam. FAU DE Haskel Cronin but a heck of a hit on Putnam, knocking the football loose. Free Safety Jarrod Hicks picked up the ball and rumbled 62 yards for the score, giving the Owls a 20-16 lead with just 1:52 remaining. Cronin went on to record a sack on ECU's final drive, helping to seal the victory for the Owls.

Conference Game Preview - ECU (0-2, 0-0) @ Marshall (1-2, 1-0) Line - Marshall by 21 The 0-2 start by the Pirates in meaningless right now. All that matters for East Carolina is the conference schedule. And it kicks off this weekend against the Thundering Herd. The media thinks it will be a Marshall blowout... Offense The Pirates are averaging 404.5 YPG, while the Thundering Herd is averaging 400 YPG. The Pirates have faced Purdue and FAU, while Marshall has faced California, Wisconsin and UCF. The key matchup in this game will be ECU's RB Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal against the Marshall front seven. The Herd has allowed 130 rushing yards per game (#54 in the nation), while Fuamatu-Ma'afal has averaged just 61.5 YPG. If Alvin can pick up the load and pile up the yards against the Herd, things will be alright for the Pirates. Defense East Carolina has allowed 463 YPG, while the Hers has allowed 443.3 YPG. If this trend continues, we should see a high scoring game. And, probably a Marshall victory. The Pirates will have to rely on their defense to step up and stop the Marshall attack, which will be no small task on the road for the 3rd time in a row... Chappy's Prediction Marshall 27, ECU 23

Thundering Herd Edges Pirates East Carolina travelled to Marshall Saturday and fell 28-23 (I was damn close on my prediction), mainly because they couldn't stop the running attack of Duke Parks. After falling behind 10-0 early, ECU fought back with a pair of Dedrick Coleman field goals before eventually knotting the score at 13 on a Mason Kragen 38-YD TD reception late in the 2nd quarter. Pirate QB Rolland Trudeau's 2nd TD pass of the game, a 60-yd strike to Wray Spears, gave the Pirates a brief 20-19 lead midway through the 3rd Q. But the Herd ran the ball at will, taking a 25-20 lead on a Phillip Kaesviharn TD run and padding their lead with Arlon Foreman's 5th field goal of the game. High Points QB Rolland Trudeau completed 12 of 25 passes for 211 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT... WR Mason Kragen had 7 catches for 97 yards and a TD... K Dedrick Coleman was 3/3 on field goals (including a 50-yarder) and 2/2 on extra points... ILB Ode Biakabutuka led the team with 7 tackles and a sack. We were 2-2 in red zone attempts, and won the turnover battle 2-1. Low Points We were out-rushed 244 to 90, allowing the Herd to pick up 4.9 YPC RB Duke Parks ran all over us, collecting 173 yards on 27 carries for an average of 6.4 YPC. WR Jan Moody tore up our secondary with 114 yards on 6 catches. We cmmitted 5 penalties for 75 yards versus 5 for 40 for Marshall Up Next - Undefeated Tulsa comes to Greenville for our home opener...

Conference Game Preview - ECU (0-3, 0-1) VS Tulsa (5-0, 2-0) On Offense RB Harold Putnam is averaging a full 2 more yards per carry than starter Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal, but we're sticking with Alvin as he has much more to offer than Putnam in the long run. Besides, we're going to try to put more of the offensive load onto the shoulders of QB Rolland Trudeau. He is 5th in the conference in passing efficiency, and has thrown 5 TDs to just 1 INT. If we can let the sophomore QB air it out more, we can better exploit the talent of Mason Kragen, the #2 wideout in CUSA. Kragen is averaging 100.3 YPG on 6 catches per game. We also want to get the ball out to Webster Bech, the league's #4 wideout at 99 YPG. Hopefully we can stretch out the Tulsa defense and open up some holes for the running game. On Defense Tulsa's starting quarterback Wilson Galbraith is doubtful, and although backup Speedy Crummey leads CUSA with a 154.3 QB Rating, we're going to take our chances and let him try to beat us by focusing on stopping RB Ronnie Beasley. Beasley is averaging nearly 100 yards on the ground per game, and is probably salivating at the chance to face us. After all, we are allowing a CUSA-worst 190.7 ypg on the ground. Our pass defense isn't much better, and is ranked 9th of the 12 teams. Hopefully, Crummey will have a crumby outing and bring that number down a little. The Skinny So, our objective is to throw, throw, run on offense and stuff the run, stuff the run, stuff the run on defense. We are winless and facing an undefeated foe, but they are more battle-damaged and we are at home for the first time. I'm calling an upset and a 28-20 Pirate win. Pirates Win Home Opener In Overtime The Pirates prepared a new offensive scheme for their home opener, and although things did not go as planned, they survive with the win and send the Tulsa Golden Hurricane home with their first loss of the season. Things didn't look very good at first for the Pirates, who were looking to stop Tulsa RB Ronnie Beasley at all costs. After the Pirates kicked off to Tulsa to start the game, Beasley thundered down the field for a 17-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage, and picked up 7 more on the next play. But the defense eventually toughened up and forced a Tulsa punt, after which the Pirates marched down the field for the first score of the game. ECU RB Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal rumbled for a 17-yard gain of his own, setting up Rolland Trudeau's 2 yard TD pass to Wray Spears. Things were quiet for the Pirates through the second quarter, but the Golden Hurricane picked up a pair of Rodney Leftridge field goals to make it 7-6 ECU at the half. The two teams were at a stale mate in the 3rd, until Ronnie Beasley's 10-yard TD run gave Tulsa the lead. They converted the 2-point attemt to make the score 14-7 Tulsa. With 9:30 left in the game, ECU's Kuechenberg picked off Tulsa QB Len Keane at the Tulsa 33. The Pirates struggled to move the ball on the drive until Trudeau hit Kragen for a 22-yard touchdown pass. East Carolina got the ball back at their own 20 with 3:34 left after stopping Tulsa's next drive. They moved the ball well until Trudeau was picked by Tulsa's Antwan Briggs at the Tulsa 22 yard line. It was the 4th time Trudeau was picked off in the contest. Tulsa made it as far ast the ECU 46 before time ran out. The Pirate defense stepped up and held Tulsa to a field goal in their first overtime drive. All the Pirates had to do was drive 25 yards and they'd have pulled off the upset. Trudeau hit wideout Webster Bech for an 18-yard gain on the first play, picked up 5 more on a dump to Spears on the second play, and on the third play he hit tight end Boo Seurer for a 2-yard gain and the game-winning touchdown. It was Seurer's first catch of the year. What Went Right Well, we outscored our opponent and picked up our first win... Running back Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal gained 128 yards oom 17 attempts for a 7.5 YPC average. What Went Wrong Everything else. We had two objectives; to stop Beasley and the run and to place the offense on the shoulders of Trudeau. Beasley earned player of the game honors for his line - 22 carries, 127 yards, 5.8 YPC, 1 TD - and the Tulsa backs combined ran for 191 yards on 39 attempts. Despite his 3 TD passes, Trudeau was terrible. He completed just 14 of 39 attempts (35.9%) and was picked 4 times. He threw for a season-low 157 yards and had a 74.6 rating. So, I'm glad we won but I wish things had gone more like I had planned. Up Next We host 5-1 Southern Miss...

Conference Game Preview - ECU (1-3, 1-1) VS Southern Mississippi (5-1, 3-0) Another tough one... We're 2 point underdogs at home. On Offense The Golden Eagles have the 4th best pass defense in CUSA, but we're going to stick to our guns and try to throw against them. Their rushing defense leads the entire NCAA, as they are allowing just 71 YPG on the ground (an average of 2.2 YPC). So, yeah, we're going to try to throw the ball. Rolland Trudeau will have to play better than he did last week if we are going to come out of this one with a win. On Defense Southern Miss is a little better at passing than running this season, but I think since stopping the run is our weak spot, we're still going to focus on that aspect of their game. SOMS QB Dantonio Dawkins is 6th in the conference in passing efficiency, and his 11 TD passes are 2nd in CUSA. Clayton Ofenheusle is their top RB, and although he only manages 83 YPG, he also averages 5.06 YPC and can be tough to contain. The Skinny Once again, our mindset will be to throw about twice as often as we run, and although we'll turn our attention to stopping Dawkins a little bit, our primary focus will be on Ofenheusle and the running game. It will be tough, but I'm calling another ECU win - 21-20. CUSA Rankings: ECU PASS O - 6th (240.2) ECU RUN O - 8th (112.8) ECU PASS D - 8th (260.0) ECU RUN D - 12th (190.8) ECU SCORING O - 4th (20.0) ECU TO MARGIN - 6th (+2) SOMS PASS O - 2nd (267.5) SOMS RUN O - 4th (141.0) SOMS PASS D - 4th (235.5) SOMS RUN D - 1st (71.0) SOMS SCORING O - 2nd (24.2) SOMS TO MARGIN - T-4th (+3)

Pirates Fall 23-21 Quarterback Rolland Trudeau completed less than half of his passes for the 4th time in a row and threw more picks than TD's for a second straight week as the East Carolina Pirates fall at home to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. Trudeau had posted QB ratings of 183.9, 114.2 and 145.3 in the Pirates first three games before head coach Chappy decided to put the offense on Trudeau's shoulders. Since then, he has posted ratings of 74.6 and 85.7. Ironically, his 74.6 rating came in the Pirates' lone win. The Pirates jumped out to a 9-0 lead on SOMS, recording a safety and adding a TD on Trudeau's 18-yard pass to Boydston. But the Golden Eagles countered with a TD and safety of their own to know the game at 9-9 with 1:23 left in the 1st quarter. Darkins dumped the ball off to SOMS FB Duckett for a TD with 6:41 left in the 2nd quarter to put the Eagles up 16-9. East Carolina kicked a 3rd Q field goal and manages their 2nd safety of the game to pull it to 16-14, but Darkins threw another 1-yard TD pass a couple of drives later. The Pirates scored again on when QB Adger Ballamy (who came in once the Pirates reached the SOMS 1 yard line) threw a 1-yard pass to Wray Spears. The Pirates did not attempt an on-side kick or call any time outs as they allowed SOMS to run out the final 1:51. Grrr... Stupid AI... What Went Right Running back Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal had about as good a game as any back has had against Southern Miss. He only carried the ball 13 times, but managed 80 yards (6.15 YPC). Alvin is averaging 4.65 YPC on the year, and figures to play a bigger role in the Pirate attack next week... Wide Receiver Webster Bech had his 3rd 100-yard receiving game of the season. He had 8 catches for 109 yards... DE Boyd Terrell recorded a pair of sacks for the second week in a row... What Went Wrong The AI didn't call any time outs after kicking off deep to the Golden Eagles with under 2 minutes to play in the game... Rolland Trudeau completed just 42.2% of his pass attempts... We couldn't cover a pair of SOMS receivers very well. Y.A. Ford had 6 catches for 118 yards and Jamar Arrington had 8 catches for 106 yards. Next Up On the road against the Houston Cougars (2-5, 1-3)

Conference Game Preview - ECU (1-4, 1-2) @ Houston Cougars (2-5, 1-3) The bad news is that we are off to a 1-2 start in conference play. The good news is, the road should get easier, as the 3 teams we played are Marshall, Tulsa and Southern Miss, who are a combined 10-2 in CUSA play, and 15-5 overall. This week we head to Houston to face the Cougars - the weakest team we've had since FAU. Of course, we lost to FAU, so this is not time to back down. We've got to win out and hope SOMS, UAB and Marshall pick up a few losses... But that really doesn't matter right now. All that matters for the moment is our matchup with Houston... On Offense We're going to balance things out this week. Rolland Trudeau has proven he is better when the pressure is not on him, and Alvin runs better when the pressure is not on him. So, if we distribute the ball evenly, hopefully both players will put up big numbers. Houston boasts the #1 pass defense in CUSA and the #11 run defense, which temps me to focus on the run... but I think a balanced attack will work best. On Defense Houston only averages 327 yards of offense per game, and we don't want to let them bring that average up against us. They have the worst passing game in the conference, so want to pressure QB Dalton Whitley. Their top running back is Kenard Archie, and he's a capable back. He's averaging 4.42 YPC and 98.4 YPG. Stopping him will be key. The Skinny We want to balance our attack, and play balanced defense. Prediction - We do that, we win 20-10. Pirates Pick Up Win in Houston Despite falling behind early, the East Carolina Pirates picked up their second win of the season by beating the Houston Cougars 30-25. It was the first road win for the Pirates. It was an interesting game for Pirate running back Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal, who had 95 yards on 20 carries. He had 94 yards on two carries and a grand total of 1 on the other 18. In fact, he only had three positive runs on the day. Fortunately, two of them were for TDs - one went for 50 yards and the other went for 44 yards. His other positive run was a 6-yard rumble. What Went Right The running game. In addition to Alvin's 95 yards, backup back Harold Putnam picked up 119 yards on 14 carries. The team netted 199 yards on the day (sacks make up the difference)... The kicking game. Dedrick Coleman hit all three field goal attempts and all three extra point attempts. He's 10-for-13 on FG this season and 13-for-13 in extra points... The pass defense. Houston QB Bruno Crecion managed to complete just 7 of 27 pass attempts. What Went Wrong The passing game. Houston isn't the #1 pass defense in the conference for nothing. Rolland was held to a 12/25, 106 YD 0 TD 1 INT performance. He was also sacked 4 times. Up Next Still on the road - to face the Central Florida Golden Knights (2-5, 2-3).

Pirates Escape From Florida with 16-13 Win It took 3 OT posessions, but the Pirates returned to Greenville with thier 3rd conference win of the season. ECU jumped to a 7-0 lead with an Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal 1 YD TD run on their first posession of the 2nd quarter, but Central Florida was able to tie the game before half time win Jamir Trippi caught a 14 YD pass from QB Randal Grzeskowiak. That was all of the scoring in regulation. The teams didn't move the ball much better in OT, as each team hit a field goal in each of their first two overtime posessions. Dedrick Coleman hit his 3rd FG of the game in ECU's 3rd drive, and after the Pirates pushed the Golden Knights back on their next drive, UCF kicker Gerald Hoffman missed from 31 yards. The Pirates were low key afterwords, happy to win, but disappointed in their play. Hoffman looked dejected - it was his 3rd miss of the game - he had already missed twice from 47 yards in regulation. What Went Right Dedrick Coleman converted all three of his FG attempts and his lone point after attempt. Our freshman kicker has been reliable all season, converting 13 of 16 FG attempts and all 14 XP attempts. The running game. Once again, Fuamatu-Ma'afal and Putnam looked good. Alvin carried 20 times for 112 yards (5.6 YPC) and Harold carried 14 times for 89 yards (6.4 YPC). They are both averaging about a hundred yards a game over the past two contests. Strong safety Mondriel Kuechenberg earned MVP honors, and boy did he deserve them. He had a career-high 14 tackles, including 12 solo tackles and a sack. He forced 2 fumbles - the key one being the one on UCF's next-to-last play. That fumble pushed the Golden Knights back 5 yards and set up the missed field goal. What Went Wrong Turnovers. We threw two picks and fumbled 4 times, losing two of them. We picked off UCF twice, but lost the turnover battle 4-2. Rolland Trudeau. Our QB completed just 11 of 30 passes for 128 yards. At least he was only sacked once this week. Still, he managed to post a season-low QB rating (65.8) with this dud of a performance. Next Up Trudeau tries to get on track against the worst pass defense in CUSA - Memphis (1-8)...

ECU Wins Third Straight Game, Top Tigers 27-20 In a game that wasn't really as close as the scoreboard indicates, East Carolina comes out on top and moves to 4-4 on the season. We are now 4-2 in conference play, good for 4th place behind Marshall (6-3, 6-0), Southern Miss (7-2, 5-1) and UAB (5-4, 4-2). With two games left, a bid in the conference championship game is no longer possible - even if Marshall loses out and we win out, their head-to-head win over us puts them on top - but we can still be bowl bound if we keep winning. What Went Right Running Back Harold Putnam. We were using our 'Air it Out' package, so the backs didn't get a lot of carries, but Putnam made the most of his. He gained 88 yards on 8 carries, good for an 11 YPC average. Starting tailback Alvin Fuamatu-Ma'afal was no slouch either, gaining 6.3 YPC (44 yards on 7 carries)... Wideout Webster Bech. Bech posted his 4th 100-yrd performance of the year, notching a career-best 165 yards on 6 catches with a TD... Kicker Dedrick Coleman. Coleman was once again perfect, hitting on all three of his extra point attempts and both of his field goal tries, including a 43-yarder... The Linebackers. We set a season high with 5 sacks, 4 of them coming from the LB's - including 2 for OLB Char-ron Chester... The Run Defense. We finally stopped somebody's running game, holding the Memphis Tigers to 69 yards on 41 rushes (1.7 YPC)... What Went Wrong We allowed 17 4th Quarter points, turning a 27-3 lead into a 27-20 lead in a scarilly short amount of time... Trudeau. Our QB managed to complete less than half of his passes for the 7th straight game, completing only 14 of 35 attempts. He did throw 3 TDs and just 1 INT, however. What's Next In our first home game since falling to Southern Miss 23-21, we will battle the Rice Owls (3-5, 2-3). REMAINING SCHEDULE: Rice (3-5) UAB (5-4) @ NC State (5-4) OPEN Wake Forest (1-8)
