I was wondering when Wendi Richter would show up, as the only other female draw in America. I did a game once where I was playing as late-game AWA as Greg Gagne, and I went full-throttle into running the company as a regional women's wrestling promotion. Wendi was pretty much the heart and soul of that AWA run, as one of the very few American wrestlers who could go.

Yeah, Wendi brings star power - relatively speaking - to WCW's women's division. I'm sceptical whether I can get much more than lower midcard grades out of them, but we'll see.

Show notes: Scott Steiner’s heel turn was a complete success ... Owen Hart and Brian Pillman scored A* ratings in the tag match ... Owen and Steiner join the A-rated match club, not counting War Games ... I probably knew this before, but Cactus and Koloff have great chemistry; That makes four workers Cactus has great chemistry with. One’s obvious (Sting), one less so (Firebreaker Chip) and the third one probably needs to be a main event sometime soon ... Arn Anderson sustained a leg cramp in his match, but won’t miss any time ... Sting, Rude and Austin all scored A match ratings and the match itself was a 98 and no. 5 on the list; My search for an A* match continues!

On a related note, I looked into Ric’s top ten matches given how he’s been used in the diary. I assumed that a match against Sting or Koloff would be top; Nope.

Flair’s best match, by 11 points, is his recent loss to Steve Austin (A). Before that it was a B against Luc ‘Rambo’ Poirier on a European house show. Regional popularity exploitation aside, he had a recent B against Tim Horner on Main Event, a couple of Bs against Owen Hart last year... and at #6 on the list, losing the Russian Chain match to Nikita Koloff at Halloween Havoc.

Evidently my booking isn’t doing anything to help Ric win any WOTY awards; But maybe that’s about to change?

I really liked seeing Wendi show up. Her against Madusa is a match that people can get behind for the Women's title, as the only other "names" left behind from the women's divisions are mostly either too old to be a threat like Lelani Kai or not known well enough to be a short-term threat like Misty Blue. But everyone can remember Wendi Richter, and this instantly makes her both credible and able to handle her own business against the Terminator that is Madusa.

<p>I've made it a policy in this game not to put anyone in development who already has a contract*, and every American/Canadian/etc. female wrestler in the game was signed to LPWA/LMLW by the time I started looking. Without checking the game, I have a feeling that I've either bought out LMLW or have the option to as they're in debt, so I could put their talent on developmental deals, but obviously there's a pretty big overlap between the two companies so boosting LMLW (and putting them on weekly or better shows for the expereince gains) will hurt LPWA. And I have a feeling that could cause issues with the NWA... Politics!</p><p> </p><p>

On a practical level, there aren't very many available <em>and</em> good trainers in the database, and those who are, are in WCCW. The Mexican and Japanese feds have become a lot better in 2016 at holding on to high-Performance veterans that I would otherwise have snapped up as trainers.</p><p> </p><p>

I may revise this position, but my other option is to turn Saturday Night into a training show for a handful of female workers. In America in 1991, however, those women are mainly starting from a low point some distance behind the men in terms of talent. Had I made a concerted effort even six months ago in-game, it might have worked, but looking ahead I'm not sure how quickly the women can develop.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm going to look into this in more detail in my game soon. As you'll see in a few posts time, there are changes to the game world coming that make it more feasible for WCW to get even more ambitious...</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:8px;">* I think I broke this for Rey Mysterio, but it's </span><span style="font-size:8px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Rey Mysterio</span></span><span style="font-size:8px;">.</span></p>

Because even in six months a touring promotion is gonna really hone some skills...</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> I recently changed the dev. territories to start running weely shows where they weren't already touring shows. I've now added a second weekly show to each fed so they can double up on their work. Granted all the trainees are in WCCW so for the other 7 feds it's irrelevant, but I may need to steal someone from SAPW any time now!</p><p> </p><p> (Actually a bad example, as the first person I clicked on in SAPW is Jackie Fulton, and he and his brother Bobby are the Fantastics, who're the best indie tag team in the game. I'm very much likely to steal them sometime. Let's pretend I said GPW with their knock-off Demolition team, Kurrgan and Rick "Big Titan/Fake Razor Ramon" Bogner as their main draws...)</p>

Ross, you flatter me!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The night’s main event saw Randy Savage clashing with “Rough Diamond” Shawn Michaels in one of the younger competitor’s first headline matches. It was a back-and-forth match, Savage still showing the signs of his gruelling ladder match defeat on Thursday, while Michaels had a tough defeat of his own against Michael Hayes to put behind him. With both men looking for momentum, there was no stone left unturned and both men came close to victory, but it seemed to be Savage who was in the ascendance...</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

...until he caught sight of Scott Steiner standing silently in the aisle. Savage stood, transfixed, and Michaels took advantage with a Teardrop Suplex to put the Macho Man down for three – and a huge win for the Rough Diamond!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

As Michaels celebrated with Diamond Dallas Page and Kimberley, Steiner produced a microphone.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Everything’s done between us, as far as I’m concerned. Don’t come after me, and I’ll leave you alone. Try and make something of it, and Elizabeth will be wearing black before you have time to regret the death of your career!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Barry Windham’s inaugural Television title defence could hardly have been harder – the Diamond Studd was in a mean mood, and out to add to his Six Man title belt, beating Windham down in the early going. The tough Texan is no stranger to a brawl, however, and gave back every bit as good as he got, firing off big rights and a huge lariat that took both men to the outside. Brawling around the ring, Studd tasted the crowd barrier across his back, while Windham was pitched into the ringpost, but still neither man would stay down. Back in the ring, the two men traded punches and Studd managed to put the champion down with a big elbow smash. Studd seemed to feel that something special was required as he began climbing the top turnbuckle – but Windham was quickly to his feet and met Studd on the ropes, delivering a very quick superplex for the pin and a successful first defence! After the match, Brian Pillman put in an appearance saying that he’d be happy to face Windham... eventually! But it would be at a time and place of his choosing, and he had a feeling that Windham would be busy defending his title for a while yet!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Arn Anderson took a hit during his clash with Dustin Rhodes on Thursday night, but he was in the ring this Saturday to issue a challenge for anyone who wanted a shot at the United States title! The challenge was answered by the “All-American” Ron Simmons, who said he’d always be proud to carry the flag – and especially if it meant taking down a cheating, conniving liar like Anderson! Anderson seemed stung by Simmons’ words, but said that he’d make Simmons eat them when they meet next week!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

World champion Rick Rude was content to watch the show from the Dangerous Alliance locker room, but consented to giving a few words to Tony Schiavone. Rude laughed at the idea of being worried about Rhodes and Windham, declaring that the Dangerous Alliance was more than a match for anything, or anyone – no-one could match their teamwork, as they’ve proven at the Great American Bash!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric Flair and the Thrillseekers crossed swords with the Dangerous Alliance in six-man action. World tag champions the Calgary Connection were teaming with Steve Austin, and the experience of the two sides was on show with some very quick tags and exciting teamwork on display. Ric Flair’s experience more than made up for the relative callowness of his associates, but even with the “Dirtiest Player in the Game” on their side, Storm and Jericho struggled against the barrage of cheap tricks employed by the Alliance, and ultimately proved costly as Storm was caught in the Alliance corner, thumbed in the eye by Austin, and before he had a chance to recover Hart rolled him up for the pin – with his feet on the ropes for good measure!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

After their brutal wars, you’d think that Nikita Koloff and Cactus Jack could never be on the same page – but they seemed to find common ground after their brutal cage match at the Bash. While we doubt you’ll ever see the pair palling around, they agreed that their rivalry had consumed all their attention, and only brought pain and suffering to themselves. Cactus said he was normally fine with that – but he had other things he wanted to do as well, so just this once he’d listen to The Man and let things stand where they were. Apparently even Cactus can have some sense beaten into him! As for Koloff, he said he’d spent six months fighting Cactus, and now it was time to focus on getting gold around his waist again.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ricky Steamboat and Marcus Bagwell united once again to take on the One Percenters – but it seems to have been a Kingdom trap! The Harris twins got themselves disqualified as they brutally beat down Bagwell, and then Big Van Vader and Mr Hughes joined the attack! Hughes and the Harrises held back Steamboat as Vader delivered a thunderous right hand to Bagwell that left him limp. Vader looked as though he were considering continuing the beating, but shook his head – “He’s already beaten!” the masked man snarled, before leading his cohort away from the ring as Steamboat checked on his young protégé.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Michael Hayes still seemed to be celebrating after his Bash victory over Shawn Michaels, but the party was spoiled by Vinnie Vegas! The seven-footer demanded a match with Hayes to show that the Diamond Exchange were no pushovers – Hayes’ victory over Shawn Michaels had been gamblers’ luck, nothing more, and that would run out when he set foot in the ring with Vegas!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bret Hart just gets about his business without getting distracted by the wars of his contemporaries; Here on Saturday Night, he clashed with Brad Armstrong and emerged victorious with the Sharpshooter. Maybe Rhodes and Windham should try and recruit him to their fight?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

<p>An issue with being a few weeks ahead of where I'm posting - gotta have that buffer - is that occasionally I look back and go "Huh?" So it proved on seeing James Maritato booked here, as for a moment I thought I'd wandered into an ECW diary but, yes, he's one of my development/occasional preliminary guys who I hired precisely so I could have occasional recognisable preliminary guys because <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1fhNE5oZl4" rel="external nofollow">occasionally some of those guys made it</a>... and occasionally I just confuse myself.</p><p> </p><p>

Anyway, on with the show, because I want to get to the next Ric segment. It's a big one.</p><p> </p><p>

Defence number 2 for Barry Windham came against Diamond Dallas Page of the Diamond Exchange, and if Windham thought that facing a manager might be an easy night’s work, Page was quick to correct him. Page has clearly been taking lessons from his clients, and put on a great showing in his effort to Beat The Champ – but like Diamond Studd last night, Page was overcome with a Superplex that gave Windham the 1-2-3, a cool $1,000... and which saw him move one step closer to a title shot of his choice. What odds that Windham has a World title match against Rick Rude in his sights?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bret Hart has made it clear where his priorities lie, and he knows the path to success is one that will see him fight a lot of matches to earn the opportunities he wants so badly. Success against a former World champion like Thomas Rich can only help his cause!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Scott Steiner was at pains once more to point out that he did what he had to do. Perhaps, but young Jimmy Jannetty found that Steiner pretty much did what he wanted to do in their match, before delivering a Frankensteiner for the win in short order.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Michael Hayes had plenty of short, sharp words for the Diamond Exchange on Sunday night. We wonder if his mind was changed as they took down their eclectic trio of challengers to defend the Six Man titles?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Dustin Rhodes has staked out his pitch, with the young Texan keen to lead in the war with the Dangerous Alliance. He channelled some of that energy into his bout with (the even younger) James Maritato here, picking up the win with a Running Bulldog.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Rhodes and Windham took the time to check in on Ricky Steamboat and Marcus Bagwell after their bruising encounter with Big Van Vader and the Kingdom; Steamboat was keen to take a measure of revenge against Mr Hughes but probably got less than he would have liked, as the Kingdom’s silent enforcer took a DQ after failing to meet the five count when punching Steamboat in the corner. Steamboat at least had the satisfaction of levelling Hughes with a dropkick off the second rope afterwards!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

<p>Hence why I could never take Rich seriously! I did try and drop him into development as a trainer - he doesn't have bad stats - but he wasn't interested. Ah well, now the perpetual farewell tour is finished I have time to work out the other mysteries of life in WCW, like what to do with Ron Simmons - a wrestler for whom Autumn 1992 went rather well in real life, but who gets nervous the higher he's pushed in the game.</p><p> </p><p>

It kind of feels like I'm going to put him in a tag team with Nikita Koloff at some point, but I'm sure I can do better.</p><p> </p><p>

Anyway, I've been off on a long wiki walk and it's time to log off, so something for you all to ponder:</p><p> </p><p>

WWF have crowned a new World champion, their first in nearly 18 months, as Hulk Hogan lost the title the same night that Main Event aired. <strong>Who do you think Vince put the belt on?</strong></p>

Some good guesses, one very close indeed, but clearly none of you have quite the same creative genius as Vince McMahon :p

Ric sat at his desk, the stats and figures in front of him making his vision swim and his head pound.

But in a good way!

Yeah, like a half-dozen shots of Haig!

The figures were clear, once you got the hang of them. WCW’s recognisability was up – nationwide, more people were tuning into Saturday Night and Main Event. In Europe and Japan, there were more people watching too.

Okay, so we’re talking the sort of numbers that wouldn’t sell out a Main Event taping, let alone Saturday Night, but still!

Merchandise sales were up. Advance ticket bookings were up. Pay-per-view buy rates... Well, the Bash had outsold its 1991 equivalent by fully fifteen percent; It was the first WCW pay-per-view to break the 0.5 barrier – and it had smashed it. Only WrestleMania VIII had outdrawn the Bash this year... and based on other performances from WCW and WWF shows, even that last straw for the WWF to cling to would disappear soon enough.

The Bash was an A. Our last five Saturday Nights were A’s – except the A*! I put Savage and Michaels in the main event on Saturday to give the fans a breather from the Alliance – and they still got an A! Shawn Michaels got an A! We gave him time and the opportunity to get there, and he did it in five months!

Stole some of my bits too, and good luck to him if he’s going to keep doing that!

But while all of that was good – great, even – what had really put the smile on Ric’s face as August dawned was the results of WrestleFest the night before. Overall, it had been a decent show (the Wrestling Observer was reportedly giving it a B-, which Ric thought sounded about right) but nothing to touch the Bash.

Apparently Meltzer will say that Main Event was more worthwhile – especially as it was free, and not $19.95!

The undercard had featured the apparent blow-off of the Beverly Brothers feud (Beau won), Honky Tonk Man beating Kato
(what does Honky have on Vince?)
, Jim Neidhart going over the Berzerker
(I could do a lot with John Nord)
, the Barbarian hammering Marty Jannetty (
I think Shawn made the right choice!
), Warlord thrashing Tatanka (
wasn’t that guy supposed to be going somewhere?
) and Rick Steiner pinning Smash
(how does being a WWF midcarder feel, Rick?)
. Not one of the matches would have made it onto the Bash – let alone all six of them.

Above the fold, the show had been better. Texas Tornado beating Typhoon and Tito Santana beating Earthquake had been pretty good, if not exactly great for the Natural Disasters’ prospects as singles competitors. Baron von Raschke going to a double count out with Rick Martel had been amazingly good, considering – Martel had gone out there with his working boots, trunks, knee pads, elbow pads, oversized ‘Yes, I Am A Model’ badge and ring jacket on. The main event had been the best match on the show, although Ric thought it might only just have made the mid point on the Bash.

So, the WWF has a new World champion! That dastardly fiend Hulk Hogan did the job clean, in the centre of the ring, putting over the fresh, up-and-coming, first-World-title winning...

...41 year old...

...Greg Valentine.

R9oFQPu.jpg

Not for the first time that morning, Ric leant back in his chair and laughed, long and loud.

Ric had needed to check to see that Valentine was actually still employed with the WWF – he’d had as many matches with the UWF under Herb Abrams as he’d had in the WWF since the turn of the year. Aside from a (good, admittedly) no-contest with Hogan in March he’d only been on TV three times. His other four matches had been reserved for pay-per-views – a nothing appearance in the Royal Rumble, a so-so win with Marty Jannetty over the Bushwhackers in April, a similarly blah win over Crush in May... and then two months in which Valentine hadn’t been seen in the WWF due to Crush dislocating his jaw.

Of course he came back as Hogan’s mystery opponent, because that makes sense. And of course he won the title, because Greg’s such a great interview, and just oozes star presence...

Ric shook his head. The move baffled him. “Anything can happen in the World Wrestling Federation!”, sure, but not
actually
anything. Not making Greg Valentine World champion in 1992, surely. The UWF hadn’t put a belt on him, and the UWF had put a belt on Jeep Swenson!

Greg Valentine!

Ric was happy for Greg; They went back,
way
back, and had travelled a lot of miles and drunk a lot of beer and whiskey together. But he’d never given a thought to bringing him into WCW, let alone putting the World title on him. The guy barely registered on the casual fan’s radar – the latest polling numbers rated him below Chris Jericho, Tracy Smothers... and Vince McMahon.

I wonder if Vince was tempted...

Ric shook his head again at the thought. The reasons for putting the belt on Greg were clear enough – the WCW had been rocked by sex and drug scandals in recent months, and while Greg had done his share of partying in the past, to Ric’s knowledge he’d never touched steroids.

But really, is Greg the
only
face on the roster not on the juice? If nothing else, you could put the belt on the Undertaker!

Ric tidied up all the papers and set them aside. Reaching into a desk drawer, he took out a folder with a lot of hand-written notes and figures in.

I think I have a phone call to make.

He picked up his phone and dialled the number – he had it memorised by now. Opening the folder as the phone rang, he leafed through its contents, even though they were well memorised by now.

“Yes, it’s Ric Flair for Mr Turner. To discuss expanding WCW‘s advertising nationwide, moving Saturday Night to prime time, and all the things we talked about last month. Sure, he can call me back. Any other message? Yeah – let him know that Vince McMahon did something Jim Herd would have thought twice about...”

As the hold music kicked in, Ric leaned back in his chair and started laughing again.

Greg Valentine!
