When I graduated from Tulsa I stayed on as a G.A. and then soon got hired by Old Dominion as the O-Line coach. We had a little bit of success we had our Senior Center Howard Young and Junior Guard Gary King make the all-conference team. I got a call from Charlotte A.D. James Duffy apparently Brad Lambert had gone to greener pastures as the D.C. at his Alma Mater Kansas State. So I talked to my fiance and at the age of 27 I accepted the job as the Charlotte University 49ers Head Football Coach.

Introducing the coaches

Apparently they cleaned house after Lambert left and they decided to go young with all of us for our coordinators they went with Kyle Young from Minnesota who favors a very West Coast style and Charles Abbott from Penn State he was in the last class that Joe Paterno brought to Penn. These guys are both very talented and I don't know how long they'll be here, but it'll be very fun to learn with these two. The last man on the team is a high school coaching legend Jack Braun who will be heading up our Special Teams. Braun has been coaching in North Carolina forever and has 3 State titles in his resume he will be here to help guide everything and bring leadership to the locker room.

Depth Chart 2016

With all of the moving done me and the other coaches met in my office and broke down the roster.

Quarterback

S. Christopher Nelson - Jr. - an all-district at Lawrence Academy he lead the Warriors to the state semifinals. He is the starter for us this year and it'll be his job to lose.

2. Gary Salinas - Sr.

3. Raul House - Jr.

4. Chester Oleary - So.

RS. Paul Matthews - Fr.

Running Back

S. Rodolfo Harrison - Fr. - There is always a saying in football and that is "If all thing are equal between a Senior and a Freshman you go with the Freshman." That pretty much describes the running back situation here.

2. Brian Goodman - Sr.

3. Gary Thompson - Jr.

4. James Schell - Fr.

RS. Sean Wilinson - Fr.

RS. Dale Sherman - Fr.

Fullback

S. Steven Acosta - Fr. - A young kid for Virginia originally an All-District running back in high school. Being bigger he was moved to Fullback and needs to gain some weight but he has the potential to be the most talented skill player on the team.

2. Thomas McDonald - Fr.

3. Clayton Reed - Fr.

Wide Receiver

S. Pedro Jones - Sr. - A guy whos been here for the long haul he is the most reliable receiver we have. He is also student body President.

S. Robert Lee - Jr. - Lee is an amazing athlete that was drafted by the Rockies in the MLB draft. He is a pretty good receiver that could win the conference MVP

2. James Burkhart - Jr.

3. Phillip James - So.

4. Thomas Miller - So.

RS. Ryan Lane - Fr.

Tight End

S. Warren Ray - Sr. - By far the best Tight End on the team he's a solid receiver that can be a red zone threat.

2. Randy Ruffin - So.

3. William Chin - So.

RS. Daniel Melendez - Fr.

Offensive Tackle

S. Roger Paul - Sr. - A good Run Blocking Tackle that has the ability to be an All-Conference player.

S. John Adame - Jr. - Adame is a good Pass Blocking Tackle that has room to grow into a really good player.

2. David Lowe - Jr.

3. James McNeill - So.

4. Dan Robinson - So.

5. Larry Contreras - Jr.

RS. Kevin George - Fr.

Offensive Guard

S. Anthony Turpin - Jr. - By far the best player on the team and one of the top Interior Lineman in the entire conference and looks like he can still be better.

S. Randy Graham - Sr. - Randy is the anchor on the offensive line and the heart of the locker room.

2. Gene Andrews - Jr.

3. Rod Davidson - So.

RS. Mark Dailey - Fr.

Center

S. Terry Kennedy - Fr. - A freshman is undersized but has the most upside of the group.

2. Wally Babin - So.

RS. Gregg Jackson - Fr.

Defensive End

S. Ryan Dennis - Fr. - He's a pretty good run defender that'll get better as he matures.

S. Clifford DeLong - So. If we weren't in need for Ends he would probably be playing Linebacker for us instead. Has the ability to develop into a very solid pass rusher.

2. David Montgomery - Jr.

3. Matthew Ibarra - Jr.

RS. Robert Wright - Fr.

Defensive Tackle

S. James Whitt - Sr. - Whitt is a serviceable Nose Tackle for us and leads that front seven.

S. Michael Davis - So. - Has great potential and has the ability to grow as a player and thicken up.

2. Robert Torres - Jr.

RS. Thomas Sheppard - Fr.

Inside Linebacker

S. Cody Thompson - So. - Thompson is a decent pass rusher that looks like he can take over a game in the future.

2. Dave Williams - Sr.

3. Forrest Garner - Jr.

4. Chris Mays - Fr.

RS. Bernard Malone

Outside Linebacker

S. Arnold Foster - Sr. - May not be the most talented player but he works really hard and doesn't give up.

S. James Wilson - Jr. - He was a very good blitzer in High School and has all the ability to be that good in college.

2. Andrew Thomas - So.

3. Anthony Wheeler - Jr.

RS. James Griffin - Fr.

RS. Lester Martinez - Fr.

Corner back

S. Curtis Clark - Jr. - Has the ability to become a great edge blitzer.

S. Eugene Marshall - So. - A really good young Corner who will be a top play maker one day.

2. Vincent Weaver - So.

3. Raymond Massey - Sr.

4. Harold Lavigne - Sr.

RS. Robert Wallace - Fr.

Safety

S. Dick Hagen - Sr. - A good Kick Returner that is also a competant Corner for us.

S. Scout Rounds - Sr. - Rounds came in as a Linebacker but was to small and was moved to Strong Safety.

2. Lee Brown - Jr.

3. Caleb Smith - So.

RS. William Gunn - Fr.

RS. Joseph Hernandez - Fr.

Kicker

S. Howard Velez - Jr. - He's a decent leg we could get better but he'll do.

S. Jeff Hitt - So. - Not really a powerful leg but more of an accurate kicker.

Preseason scouting

When we got done looking at the roster I asked who we were using as our scouting agency and they I was told that we were using "Damn Yankees" a low level agency that rarely leave the bar that the are located in. I made some calls and decided we are using "College Guru" which is the top agency on the East Coast. My reason being is that if we wanted to be taken seriously we have to take ourselves seriously.

Week 1 @ Georgia Southern

After weeks of preparing it's finally time for the first game @ Georgia Southern

Quarter One

GSU takes the opening kickoff and swiftly moves down the field being capped off by McBride taking it in from one yard out. We take the ball and quickly go three and out. On the next drive by GSU FS Dick Hagen picks off Alejandro Hernandez and gives us the ball back. We have a decent drive going on but unfortunately can't capitalize. We get another stop quickly and get the ball back. We quickly give it back to them and they score. Another three and out... Really? On their next drive Hagen picks Hernandez off again!

Quarter Two

We get a decent drive going but we can't quite get on a roll. At least We hold them to a field goal on this drive. After a couple of good screens to Goodman and a couple of passes to Pedro we come away with a Field Goal. We get a good stop after a big pass from Hernandez.

Quarter Three

Our offense is garbage. Thank God they got a holding penalty and we get the ball back. Can I just stop talking about how bad our offense is. Our defense is not that bad. We get a Field Goal... wow that's a highlight. Our Defense just scored our first Touchdown Wilson picks off Hernandez for a pick 6. We get another stop on defense how are we still in this game. And we go three and out. We get another stop. We miss a field goal...

Quarter Four

GSU can't move it right now. Our offense is offensive. At least our Punter doesn't sex. WE GET A FUMBLE RECOVERY! We punt... but we pin them inside the 3. Our defense finally broke but they kept us in the game as much as they could. We threw an interception. Nelson is just trying to much and throws another pick.

Final: 31-13

Week 2 preperation

Injury Report

OT - Roger Paul - Doubtful - Roger tore a tendon in his toe and might sit out this week.

DE - Clifford Delong - Out - This one was scary the bastard cracked his skull and wanted to go back in the game, this kid really loves this team and hopefully he'll be okay.

Academic Probation

1. Warren Ray - Our starting Tight End doesn't like to go to class well I'd like for him to catch more then one pass for a SINGLE YARD!!!

2. Eugene Marshall - Marshall is our second Corner apparently the reason he missed class was that his girlfriend kicked him out and he didn't have a place to stay, now he is staying in the locker room and is going back to class.

3. James Burkhart - Burkhart is a top prospect for us and they haven't given me a reason for this.

4. Vincent Weaver - He's our Dime back and hopefully he pulls it together.

5. Lester Martinez - He's a Freshman and still getting used to college.

Recruiting

This week we're bringing FS Johnny Buckner to Charlotte.

Week 2 vs. Buffalo

Now it's time for our home opener against Buffalo. One highlight of last week was that we gave up less than three hundred yards against Georgia Southern.

Preview: Buffalo is weird one they faced #15 Florida so on paper look better but I don't know. Somehow we pack 47,331 in to the stadium these poor people.

Quarter One

We receive the kickoff. And instantly go three and out. It was a little scary for a second they were ripping off big plays but our defense eventually locks down and gets them off the field. We get a first down and then we give up two sacks. We quickly get a stop and get the ball back. And give it right back... We get the stop and on the return Pedro returns it for seventeen yards and after a late hit we start on there forty five yard line. Nelson gets a nice bootleg breaks a tackle and gets the first down on a critical third down and Harrison finally gets rolling and scores our first offensive touchdown of the year.

Quarter Two

So someone woke up Buffalo and they march down the field and scores. We go three and out but pin them on the ten yard line. We end up holding them to a Field Goal. We get a pretty food drive going but penalty's kill it. We get a quality stop and get the ball back with thirty six seconds left. We take a shot deep and it gets picked it really doesn't bother me as long as they don't score. And they don't good.

Quarter Three

They march down the field and score out of the gate. We punt the ball and Ibarra forces a FUMBLE on the return. We can't capitalize but pin them on the three with the kick. We get a big play by faking a slant and hitting a WR Screen to Pedro for thirty nine yards. And miss a field goal... We quickly get another stop. We throw a pick six. Then go three and out.

Quarter Four

We get another stop dang we'd be good if we had an offensive. Again an awful offensive possession. We get a stop. If our Punter isn't All-Conference I'll be pissed, he pins them on the one. We give up a huge play but we lock down and get the ball back. Burkhart makes an amazing catch and if the Corner hadn't of tried to tackle him before the ball got there then he probably would of score he gets another big catch on a third down then Nelson throws another pick... Buffalo shows a lot of class and just runs the clock out.

Final: 7-24

Review: Not a bad Defensive game for us but not a lot to talk about with the Offense.

OPOTG: WR James Burkhart - Without a doubt the most impressive player on the field.

DPOTG: SS Scott Rounds - It's sad when our Safety leads the team with ten tackles.

2. Clifford DeLong - Poor Chris he's been in the hospital for the last week dealing with the fracture and now he's on probation hopefully he can get it together

3. Vincent Weaver - Weaver is the only one from last week who didn't make it off the list and he is now suspended

Week 4 preperation

Injury Report

OT - Roger Paul - Probable - Roger actually may start this week he seems to be better.

DE - Clifford Delong - Out - Good news looks like Cliff will be able to go through a walk through either this week or next week.

DE - David Montgomery - Out - He caught his elbow on someones helmet during practice last week and broke some bone chips into his elbow.

OG - Randy Graham - Probable - Some idiot ran over his foot with a skateboarder on his way to practice and gave him a pretty bad cut on his foot he may be able to play through it.

Academic Probation

Everyone is off of probation this week, looks like they get helmets only this week.

Week 4 vs. Old Dominion

Preview: Nelson is on the verge of losing his job he has zero touchdowns and FIVE picks. We are going up against the Monarchs this week they bring a fairly high powered offense. We are facing the first true dual threat quarterback of the year. Pitts their QB is the best QB and RB on the team. Their WR Adkins is a big play threat averaging over twenty yards per reception.

Quarter One

We receive the ball for the opening kickoff. We have a decent little drive going then we get sacked for a big loss. We get a big stop on the drive and get the ball back on our four yard line. We have a great drive going and throw a frickin' interception. We hold them to a field goal. Again we just can't finish drives good starts crappy finishes. We give a big play on a check down..

Quarter Two

Nothing special three and out. We get a good stop and get the ball back. How are we so freaking bad on offense. They drive down the field but we lock down and keep them to a field goal. We go for it on fourth and get it go for it again but couldn't convert. We get the stop and have a minute left in the half, we may be going with a change at half.

Quarter Three

Salinas is the Quarterback now for at least the half. We kickoff. We get the stop. We get a pretty good thing going then fail on fourth. We recover a fumble and get decent field position. We get an amazing drive but fumble it on the five yard line. Now we get the fumble back. Salinas gets us down and gets the field goal we're on the board. We stop the drive and they miss a field goal.

Quarter Four

Salinas is shaken up so Nelson is in the game now and then Salinas comes back and throws a pick...ugh. They get the ball and get a huge gain on a draw but fumble it and we return it to the three. How do we not convert from the three yard line. We get a good stop on D. Another pick... we hold them to a field goal. Pick six woo. We get a stop. We run out the clock.

Final: 6-23

Review: Nobody played well no rewards this week.

Week 5 @ Florida Alantic

Preview: We actually have a shot Florida Atlantic actually has a worse offense then us. Our Pass Defense is ranked in the top 15 in the nation.

Quarter One

We kick off to start the game. We start the game with a stop and Salinas leads the offense on to the field. We have a decent drive and have to punt. They march down the field and score. We have to punt again we have had only a single offensive touchdown this year. We convert on a fourth and short but can't capitalize.

Quarter Two

We force a three and out. We get a first down but have to punt. Another quick stop. WE MISS A TWENTY YARD FIELD GOAL!!! We force a Fumble and get the ball back. We get a good drive but can't finish.

0-7

Quarter Three

We get an amazing screen play that went for 47 yards but it doesn't end up in anything. We go three and out. We quickly force a stop. We quickly punt. We have an amazing drive that ends with a fumble on the one yard line.

Quarter Four

We get the stop. Then instantly go three and out. We get the stop thanks to a penalty and turn it in to a long TOUCHDOWN run. We give up a huge play but Hagen gets another pick to potentially save the game. We can't make anything happen. We had a chance to win but we can't capitalize.

Final: 7-10

Review: Heart breaker here.

OPOTG: Both of our main backs had over a 100 yards a piece.

DPOTG: Hagen seems to be the best play maker on the team.

Week 6 Preperation

Injury Report

QB - Gary Salinas - Out - kid got sacked and now has a sports hernia will be out for a couple of weeks

OT - Roger Paul - Out - poor kid just got back this year and took a cheap shot from a linebacker after a play and cracked a vertebrate in his neck.

DE - David Montgomery - Out - about one more week and the kid should be good.

CB - Raymond Massey - Out - pulled groin.

CB - Curtis Clark - Out - Separated Shoulder.

SS - Scott Rounds - Out - Broke his thumb while making a tackle last week.

Week 6 @ Louisiana Tech

Preview: LA Tech has one of the most high powered offenses in the entire conference. What we bring to the table is the #5 passing defense in the nation.

Quarter One

We kick the ball off to start the game. We get a quick stop at the beginning of the game and get the ball back. We have a great drive and I make a stupid decision to go for it on fourth down. SCOTT ROUNDS for whatever reason is playing and gets a pick with a huge club on his hand. We pin them on the one yard with an excellent punt. We get a nice stop. Nelson is struggling a little but looks better since he's been benched. We get a good stop. Another booming punt.

Quarter Two

They march down the field but we lock down and keep them to a field goal. We fumble and they storm down the field and score. We get sacked for a huge loss and have to punt. They sling it everywhere and they've had three QB's today. We fumble but they miss a field goal. We take a shot deep but our third string QB can't connect.

0-17

Quarter Three

We get the ball convert a fourth down but end up having to punt. We hold them to a field goal after a huge play. We can't run can't throw and our defense is exhausted. We get a solid stop. Nelson is back and connects on a big pass downfield but we can't finish the drive.

0-20.

Quarter Four

We give up a huge play. We go three and out. Thanks to a nice penalty we get a three and out. We give them the ball back. We get a stop. they return a punt for a touchdown. We punt.

Final: 0-34

Review: I truly believe that if Nelson doesn't get knocked out of the game early we would have been closer.

OPOTG: Nelson - went 5/10 and an INT but was very muched improved over last week.

DPOTG: Rounds - Plays through a broken thumb and gets a huge INT early in the

game.
