<hr>TNA Wrestling 2016: REDEMPTIONMANIA! - Let The Story Commence...

Our timeline begins on the 3rd of October 2016, and the morning after TNA’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view. The company’s biggest event of the year, the status of the show was called into question in the days preceding it, with reports that the promotion lacked the funds to go forward, and were actively searching for a new buyer.

After spending the week leading into the PPV negotiating with Billy Corgan and the WWE, it was reported that an unidentified third party had given the company the required funds to proceed with the event.

What followed was a solid, if unspectacular show, with the questions surrounding the company's future remaining unanswered. Rumours were rampant that the WWE were close to a deal to buy the company’s video library, leading to concerns that the following day’s tapings would be TNA’s last. However, at the 11th hour, a new offer came in, one which blew all others out of the water. An agreement was reached at an unprecedented speed, with TNA Wrestling officially finding their new Owner.

Dixie Carter was out of the picture… Panda Energy were out of the picture… The Harris Twins were out of the picture, and so was Billy Corgan. The deal was finalised, but the name on the contract was not McMahon… it was Bollea. Terry Gene Bollea - better known to the American Public as Wrestling Icon Hulk Hogan!

Expected to ride off into the sunset with the moral highground and financial stability of the Gawker settlement, Hulk Hogan’s return caught many off guard. Insiders soon noted that Hulk Hogan would not be coming to the company alone, with reports that the true catalysts behind the deal were “The O’Brien Brothers”. Recently hired by Hulk Hogan, the pair dub themselves “PR Gurus”, claiming to have worked with the likes of Michael Richards, Britney Spears and Charlie Sheen, following turbulent times in their respective careers. With strong links to Hollywood, and connections in the media, the pair were hired as Hogan’s personal “spin doctors”, as he looked to put his personal issues behind him.

Their task was simple… to restore the name, and rebuild the tainted brand of “Hulk Hogan”. Taking charge of The Hulkster’s social media presence, and working closely with his management team, The O’Brien Brothers advised that a move back into Pro Wrestling - where Hulk first became a household name - would be beneficial in shedding Terry Bollea’s reputation as an racist, out-of-touch, “disgraced celebrity”, and recapturing the image which made Hulk Hogan a hero to millions.

As a result - from October 6th 2016 - TNA Wrestling was no longer about a Wrestling show, or even a Television programme, TNA Wrestling’s sole reason for existence would be to serve as an elaborate PR exercise, a vehicle to restore a tainted legacy and to present Hulk Hogan as a changed man. The matches, the characters and the storylines would become secondary, as Impact Wrestling became “The Hulk Hogan Show” in all but name...

With tapings already scheduled for Monday through Thursday, the first three days of tapings were converted to One Night Only pay-per-view recordings, with Thursday’s show becoming a “Live Special” to usher in the second “Hogan Era” of TNA’s history. Hogan Meets The Roster

Thursday, Week 1, October 2016 - Hulk Hogan Meets The Roster

When Thursday arrived, it was time for Hulk Hogan to meet the roster. Hogan was all smiles as he greeted each individual - as if he was the queen or something - ahead of his first Impact in charge. Those who had met him previously described a calmer, more humble Hulk Hogan, perhaps on the advice of The O’Brien Brothers.

Throughout the morning, Hulk Hogan would go on to call each member of the roster to his office, in alphabetical order, with the intention of getting to know a bit about them. Having spent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday researching the company’s recent product, The O’Brien Brothers had prepared a dossier on each member of the roster. Of course, not having ever seen their in-ring work would not be a problem for Hogan, who was happy to evaluate his roster based on look and demeanor alone.

Between each individual meeting, The O’Brien Brothers would take note of Hogan’s reaction, before prepping him for the next performer to walk through the door. The following are the notes The O’Brien Brothers took, about the roster members who particularly caught Hulk Hogan’s eye, as well as some of their own input:

Knockouts & X Division: Hulk seemed generally uninterested in these aspects of the roster, feeling that with few exceptions they lacked depth as characters. This was a common theme throughout, with Hulk looking for more “larger than life” characters from his TNA rosters. It looks like Hogan will be outsourcing these elements of the roster.

Abyss: Familiar with each other from his first run with the company, Hogan was known to be a huge fan of Abyss when he first arrived in TNA. While the years have slowed him down, Hogan is well aware of Abyss’ value on the roster, and The Decay’s defined character help them stand out. Exactly the hype of heel Hogan is looking for, one final big run for Abyss is not out of the question.

Aiden O’Shea: The big Irish bruiser was right up his street, with Hulk giving advice that he needs to “ramp [the gimmick] up a few notches”. A good size, the surface has barely been scratched when it comes to O’Shea’s potential in TNA! Hogan noted that he wanted to see Aiden O’Shea fully packaged as an “Irish Pub Owner”, and told him to get practising on his authentic Irish accent…

Andrew Everett, Trevor Lee & Grado: Struggling to understand Grado, and being unimpressed with all of their overall looks, these were three performers who didn’t make the best first impression on The Hulkster. He asked if they’d ever seen the sun, and didn’t quite believe that they were wrestlers at first. Of course, Hulk Hogan’s definition of a wrestler isn’t the same as many people, but those people aren’t the boss!

Aron Rex: Aware of Sandow’s work in the WWE, Hogan told Rex that he “liked that Leaping Lanny thing he did”, referring to his spell as “The Intellectual Savior of the Unwashed Masses”. Confused about his current gimmick, Hulk advised Rex to “dust off his robe”. Whether this was a comment on his developing gut, or the future of Rex’s character, wasn’t elaborated on.

The Tribunal: Hogan said the French can’t be trusted. Whether that was a comment on the effectiveness of their heel gimmick or not is unknown. Either way, this is the kind of comment from Hulk that we were employed to keep under wraps!

Bram: Another big, tough looking guy who was right up Hogan’s street. Although he wasn’t sure about him as a babyface. Relieved that there were at least a few credible tough guys in the company, Hogan seemed to have a good idea of what he wanted from Bram. However, Hogan’s suggestion of the nickname “The British Bastard” didn’t go down too well with Bram.

Broken Matt & Brother Nero: Currently TNA’s bread and butter, Hogan was well aware of their buzz. When The Hardys left the room, Hogan told a story of their first run in TNA, implying that the whole Broken Matt thing was more or less his idea. He said that when they released Matt, he gave him some words of advice, and he can see his handprints all over the gimmick.

Cody: Hulk spoke highly of Cody’s father “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes and told some (quite possibly historical inaccurate) stories about the good times they had spent together. Hogan complemented Cody on his beautiful wife, before promising the “strap the rocket to him” should he sign with the company full time.

Eli Drake: Hogan liked Eli’s style and thought he was a “good looking kid”, but wasn’t sold on his gimmick. Again Hogan is very keen on black and white, over-the-top characters and wants more than just “arrogant heel” from his roster. He challenged Eli to get back to him with a “proper gimmick”.

Ethan Carter III: Hulk was impressed with the footage that he saw of Carter, commenting on him having the best look in the company. Big things are expected, with Hogan again promising to “strap the rocket” to him. Actual quote from Hogan to Carter: “I can make you the biggest superstar this business has ever seen”.

James Storm: Hogan remembered him well, given his major role in the company during Hogan’s first run. He compared Storm to Dusty Rhodes (although not in earshot of Cody), and told him the sky was the limit. As he discussed Storm’s potential, he was informed of his age and stopped short of any talk of rocket strapping. Hogan wants to see the Cowboy come out of him! One of few roster members with a true rapport with the audience, Storm will be key to Hogan’s new TNA.

Jessie Godderz: Introduced as “that Big Brother guy”, the crossover appeal with Godderz peaked interest. Given his Hollywood links, Hogan was keen to give Godderz a gimmick that matched that. Given Hogan’s run-ins with the “gutter press”, a heel paparazzi gimmick was thrown around, which Hogan seemed to like. He enthusiastically asked Jessie how he would like to take a Legdrop from The Hulkster. Jessie matched the tone and said he’d love to, before Hogan was forced to burst his bubble, commenting “but seriously, I can’t do that anymore”.

Lashley: The World Heavyweight Champion, this is the guy that - given the reputation Hogan is trying to shed - can be the face of the company. Hulk Hogan promised Lashley the world, having been advised that Lashley would be an ideal “Figurehead” for the company. Cynical as it may seem, TNA now exists to clear the name of Hulk Hogan, and it is hoped pushing an African American as their top star will shed Hogan’s reputation as a racist.

Mahabali Shera: One of the keys to Hogan’s roster will be diversity, with the aim to present Hogan as a man who will offer equal opportunities to all! Regardless of Shera’s talent (or lack there of), India is a huge market - particularly for TNA - so Shera is likely to have a role to play in the company for some time.

Mandrews: Our notes compared him to Bart Simpson, which amused Hogan. Seemingly taking a shine to him, Hogan saw Mandrews as a potential “child friendly star”, upon seeing his “trendy” and “cool” skateboard. Mostly positive, the meeting was soured by some awkwardness upon the discussion of the name “Mandrews”. As of now, he will be referred to as Mark Andrews, while a fuller gimmick is devised.

Marti Belle: Struggling with a gimmick that doesn’t fit. Luckily, Hogan values her as a performer and respects her as a human being. Or at least he would, had he been aware of her existence prior to the meeting.

Mike Bennett: Despite his position as an established member of the roster, something didn’t seem to click with Bennett and Hogan. Luckily, as Maria entered the room, Hogan seemed to lighten up, resulting in a pleasant conversation. With that said, Bennett will still have a lot to prove when it comes to impressing Hulk Hogan.

Moose: Both having been in the scope of the celebrity gossip pages, Hogan tried quickly to paint them both as victims of the media, which didn’t go down to well with Moose. However, Moose will be a valuable asset in Hogan’s TNA. Hulk Hogan vocally praised Moose’s Bound For Glory performance (even though he definitely hasn’t seen it.)

Robbie E: “Jessie’s partner”, and Hogan preferred the other half of the Bro Mans. Had to be convinced via video evidence that he’d met Robbie E before, and claimed to have zero recollection of him during his previous run. Not a good sign.

Rockstar Spud: Remembered him from British Bootcamp, had a lot of good to say. Spud came across well in the meeting, but prompted Hogan to talk about his “Micro Pro Wrestling” project after he left the room. Hogan suggested Spud as the face of a “minis division”, until it was pointed out that the X Division already served that purpose…

Tyrus: Hogan’s eye lit up when he saw this huge monster. Told that he was exactly what Hulk was looking for, he nevertheless didn’t seem flattered by comparisons to Earthquake. Saw him has a Main Event level “monster heel”, but Hogan was clearly tired by this point, as he made brief comment about a “Giant Shark” and putting Tyrus under a mask. It was probably just as well that Tyrus was the last to be called in.

Overall

Hulk Hogan was shocked by how different the company was, compared to the one he left. He was surprised by how much work the roster needed, with a lack of strong character and gimmicks amongst the locker room. He wondered where the Yokozunas, The Undertakers, the Big Bossmen, the Vaders (he checked if he still had his number), the Andre The Giants were. Despite “diversity” being key to Hogan’s TNA roster, you can’t take away his instinct to favour big guys over workrate. This led into a rant about 150lbs cruiserweight and thus marked the end of the note taking process.

Following the meetings, the following shortlist was devised. While it is unknown whether the talents would be interested in working for TNA, and with some being contracted elsewhere or potentially out of the business, these were the names put together by The O’Brien Brothers and Hulk Hogan for further consideration: Ariane Andrew (WWE’s Cameron), Barri Griffiths (WWE’s Mason Ryan), Brian Cage (currently signed to Lucha Underground), Bull James (WWE’s Bull Dempsey), Bully Ray, Caristico (potential Hispanic star, currently signed to CMLL), Chris Melendez, Cody Hall (currently signed to NJPW), Dalton Castle, Alberto El Patron (potential hispanic star), Dutch Mantell, Dylan Postl (WWE’s Hornswoggle), Eric Bischoff, Garrett Bischoff (off the radar), Hanson (currently signed to ROH), Jax Dane (current NWA World Heavyweight Champion), Jay Lethal (currently signed to ROH), Jayson Paul (WWE’s JTG), Jessie White (Vader’s son, off the radar), Jon Anderson (retired?), Mike Hettinga (WWE’s Mike Knox), Phill “Gunner” Shatter, Raymond Rowe, Rey Mysterio (potential hispanic star, semi-active schedule), Rob Terry, Ryback Reeves, Shad Gaspard (WWE’s Shad), Shawn Merriman (short WWE run), Shynron, Stuart Tomlinson (out of the business?), Tommy “Crimson” Mercer, Vader, Wes Brisco

Thanks for the comments. Pope isn't going anywhere, The O'Briens don't think it would be a good first move for Hogan. Matthews is difficult, but there aren't many announcer's out there who I'd be happy to replace him with.

I do have previous with the representation of Irishness on American television, I stopped watching 'Heroes' completely during Season 2 when they presented Cork, the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland, as a glorified fishing village where people talked in that annoying faux-Irish, diddly eye, potatoes brogue that no Irish people actually speak in but seems to be the true American impression of an Irish accent. Anyway, I digress.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> If I'm to be permitted to dwell briefly on your 'competition', I have been largely impressed by the presentation of Irish wrestlers in WWE. Sheamus' 'Celtic Warrior' persona is largely informed by but not dominated by his nationality and bar the odd misstep there's been nothing that has particularly riled me. Finn Balor and Becky Lynch are barely identified as Irish at all though when they have been it's been to mixed results (Balor's Celtic mythology lesson was excellent, Lynch's first couple of televised appearances on NXT, jigging... were actually offensive). As for Hornswaggle, I don't believe he was ever intended to be treated seriously and, accordingly, I didn't!</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> As for your own character I'll just note the following:</em></p><p><em> 1) A pub owner? As that rarest of beasts, an Irishman who doesn't drink, I feel I should be grossly offended but meh... I've been around enough to know that there's enough truth in the cliche. Obviously you're not presenting your product to a particularly insightful audience either so I appreciate that wheeling out a hurler instead might have been a bit too subtle.</em></p><p><em> 2) In my three and a half decades living here in Ireland I have never heard anybody say 'Sling your hook'. I would imagine this is because the expression is English. Or completely fantastical. It's hard to keep track sometimes. I would suggest, free of charge, a coarse declaration of 'Out on your arse!' would serve Mr.O'Shea far better. If, surpassing my expectations of him in general, he can memorise a few words in another langauge, 'póg mo thóin' is the Irish for 'kiss my ass'.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Once more, many thanks for your personalised response and I look forward to seeing how TNA will progress under this new stewardship (I've been burned before by TNA!)</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Warm regards,</em></p><p><em> Dareatworld</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> PS) One more piece of free advice.
