In the Beginning: The First Wrestlemania

Recommended Posts

The landscape of professional wrestling is changing. The territory system that has governed professional wrestling since the days of Toots Mondt and Lou Thesz is slowly giving way to a rolling juggernaut out of Connecticut. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen, but Vince McMahon is not content to rest on his laurels. He is preparing to march the World Wrestling Federation...and the world of professional wrestling...into a new era with a different kind of event. A mega card the likes of which to make Starrcade seem small by comparison. It's going to take a lot of effort, and a good deal of risk to pull off. Failure could mean our destruction. But if we're successful...the whole game will change forever.

Thus, we are now on the road to the first...and hopefully not the last...Wrestlemania...

Following a successful week of television, the WWF is gearing up for their first supercard event, set to eminate from the Boston Gardens at the end of January. This will be followed by another TV special called "The War to Settle the Score" and an experimental Pay Per View event called "Wrestlemania" to follow after that. The supercard is expected to be headlined by some kind of confrontation between Roddy Piper and Mr. T (rumor is a boxing match) and Hulk Hogan defending the WWF Title against Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff. Other possible matches include the JYD facing IC Champion Greg Valentine, the US Express facing The North-South Connection, Wendi Richter facing Leilani Kai, and Andre the Giant facing Ken Patera.

This week on WWF Television (check your local listings). All-Star Wrestling looks to have quite a bit of action in it, as Brutus Beefcake, Bret Hart and Jimmy Snuka will all be in action. And in our main event, the Junkyard Dog will be in action against The Magnificent Muraco.

Also this week, on Championship Wrestling, 1/2 of the tag team champions will take on 1/2 of the challengers, as Adrian Adonis will face off with Barry Windham. Wendi Richter will team with newcomer Vivian Vachon to face the wrestler/manager tandem of The Fabulous Moolah and Leilani Kai. Another newcomer team, The British Bulldogs, will square off with fellow canine enthusiaists, the Moondogs.
JYD - If I remember this time frame right, Muraco and Fuji were pretty much a comedy team. Dog has his day to set him up to face Valentine soon.

Matt Borne - Bret is still pretty wet behind the ears in 85, while Matt is already a solid wrestler. It may seem easy to give this to Bret, but Borne is your right now compared to a future star in Hart.

Brutus Beefcake - SPECIAL DELIVERY

Jimmy Snuka

Andre - Piper is the no contest king, likely going to end up running from the match.

Moolah and Kai - I could see Vachon actually being a heel and turning on Richter here to give the heels a win.

Barry Windham - Give the "upstart" a win to solidify their upcoming title match.

British Bulldogs - Unless the match just breaks down into all the dogs gnawing on chew toys.

After this week's television tapings, Hulk Hogan put in a good word for Davey Boy Smith, saying that he was someone definitely worth pushing in the future. There appears to be a conflict brewing between David Schultz and Jimmy Snuka though, as there were heated words between the two, but not enough to result in a full blown fight.

The Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff w/Freddie Blassie vs. Rocky Johnson & Tony Atlas

Sheik and Volkoff winning the tag titles was one of the main components of the original WrestleMania, I don't expect it to change too much here

The Wild Samoans w/Bobby Heenan vs. George Wells & Bill Anderson

Makes sense for the more established, non-jobber outfit to go over

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. "Playboy" Buddy Rose

Buddy is best when he makes other guys look good

David Sammartino w/Bruno Sammartino vs. Barry O

Nothing close to the talent his father was, but when has that mattered in the wrestling world?

Card for Championship Wrestling

Hulk Hogan & "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka vs. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff & "Cowboy" Bob Orton

Piper interference, as you have to keep up Hogan's chase on the heels until Mania

Tito Santana vs. "Dr. D" David Schultz

Difficult choice, but Tito is still very much a hot commodity

Mike Rotundo vs. "Dirty" Dick Murdoch

As part of the US Express, Rotundo is a solid talent, on his own, without a gimmick barring patriot, he doesn't do much

"Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Tony Garea

Savage is in the running for a big match at Mania
