Background

On August 17th 2014, the landscape of professional wrestling changed forever. An unkown Dario Cueto showed up at AAA Triplemanía XXII and announced the opening of the temple and laid down a challenge to any luchador who thought they were good enough to come and prove themselves.

Since then Lucha Underground has taken the wrestling world by storm and the fan base has grown exponentially. With an eclectic range of wrestlers, both Luchadors from Mexico (largely from AAA) and wrestlers from all over the world, it has become an unmissable weekly wrestling show.

In 2017 the show runners were able to strike a deal with Netflix that has offered them a much larger audience than ever before and as the show returns from it’s Season 3 mid-season break, all eyes are on the temple to see where the world of Lucha Underground goes next.

Author Notes

This diary is my attempt at recreating the magic of my favourite promotion. For anybody not familiar with the show this diary may seem a little strange, but because it is produced like a TV show the concept of kayfabe can be a little blurred but everything that happens within the shows ‘world’ is part of the story. Also any conversations or interactions had behind closed doors are just that, unlike WWE where everything in the show is filmed for the audience to see.

I will start with the roster available as of the tapings of the second half of season 3 and will largely stick to the starting storylines though a few changes will have to be made simply to translate it to game world (for example the Mack vs Mundo all night long match will not be happening.)

Cueto explains that he feels like the current Lucha Underground Trios champions Aerostar, Fénix and Drago have had an easy ride thus far and that easy rides are not acceptable in this temple and therefore they will enter the tournament like everybody else. The other 7 spots in the tournament are up for grabs and Dario reminds everybody that the temple has an open door policy and welcomes all challengers. As the match got underway, the first and only triple crown champion in Lucha Underground history, Fénix reminded everyone just how he had found such success as he demonstrated incredible speed mixed with fantastic in ring ability. What Black Lotus is saying roughly translates to “It is time for the Black Lotus Triad to return to the temple, Dario didn’t see it and neither did Pentagon Dark but now everybody is aware of just how powerful we are.” She then continues to talk adding “Doku may have become weak and abandoned us, but the Triad only grows stronger and there will always be another.” Black Lotus then blows out the candles and plunges the room into darkness. Pentagon immediately explains that he is no longer willing to wait and that he wants a chance at the Lucha Underground Championship and he won’t wait a day longer. Dario looks at him and then smirks, before sipping his scotch, he then explains that he has not forgotten the time that Pentagon Dark tried to break his arm, nor has he forgotten what he did to his brother so he will not just be handing him anything. Pentagon Dark does not seem to take this news well, before Cueto continues on saying that if he wants to face the leader of WorldWide Underground then he has to defeat every member of the group starting next week with the DareWolf. But since Pentagon doesn’t have an opponent for tonight, he’ll find him two and the match is next. This match threw up zero surprises, Daga & Mandel may have had the numbers advantage but Pentagon Dark was clearly in a bad mood and his opponents, or perhaps more accurately, his victims felt the full force of that. The match came to an abrupt halt when Pentagon Dark hit Mandel with a package piledriver to secure the bell. After the match finished, Pentagon Dark then proceeded to gesture “Cero Miedo” before breaking Mandel’s arm for a second time. Killshot set the pace for the match when he delivered a stiff running knee that sent Fox straight out of the ring, Killshot then climbed out onto the apron before hitting a springboard moonsault. The fight then went up the stairs of the temple as the pair fought up to the rafters. Senior Referee Marty Elias quickly gave up on trying to enforce a 10 count and had to be very lenient with the disqualification rule as Dante hit Killshot with a box over the head, which would normally be a disqualification but in Dario’s temple the referees are told to show leniency. The referee had to call off the match as Killshot and Dante got on top of Dario Cueto’s office and Dante tried to push Killshot off the edge. Lucha Underground News and Rumours

- The believers saw a new face in the temple this week as Lio Rush debuted, no word on his official name yet but that will no doubt become apparent in the coming weeks. Rush is a 22 year old independent wrestler and has teamed with Ricochet (Prince Puma) in the past and that is reportedly when he came on their radar.

- Lucha Underground writers have put out feelers to try and find a replacement for Kairi Hojo in the Black Lotus Triad. Mayu Iwatani and Io Shirai are both happy to return but as Kairi has already signed a written deal with WWE that starts at the end of the month, which means they now need to find a replacement.

- The writing team is also deeply concerned with the prospect of losing a lot of their big names as the exclusive contracts for Ricochet, Pentagon Jr, Rey Fénix and more all come to an end at the end of the season and there are serious doubts as to whether they might go elsewhere.

- Ricky Mandel has suggested he is unhappy with the push he is receiving and constantly doing jobs whenever he is actually used. Though his less than stellar performance on TV this week probably won’t help his standing.

- Long term viewers of the show may remember Night Claw, a gimmick that was portrayed once by Octagon Jr. but he never returned after a very messy argument with AAA, well they are considering reusing the gimmick without the wrestler. It is very clear that the company were high on the idea at the time, so it would make sense to try again with a less problematic wrestler.

The match starts off with Paul London in the ring against Hitokiri and the triad member showed the same brutality that helped her score a win over Pentagón Dark in her last appearance in the temple. The Rabbit Tribe brought their own unique brand of offence as they all linked arms and danced around Hitokiri, but it didn’t go well as Yurei and Yokai attacked Mala Suerte and Saltador, Yokai then threw Saltador straight through the door into Dario’s office. Hitokiri then hit Paul London with an explosive triple series of moonsaults to pick up the win. The same person that stopped the fight last week then appears as Killshot calls him by the name Rush. Dante Fox pretty quickly arrives and Rush stands between them, he then tells both men that they all used to be best friends and he can’t stand by and watch them tear each other apart again. He then says that he has spoken to Dario and entered them in the Trios tournament. Neither man looks at all happy at this revelation and both storm off in opposite directions. Black showed that once it came down to business he was more than able to hang with anyone and used his impressive arsenal of aerial moves combined with his martial arts background to more than hold his own. The match came to an abrupt and impressive end when Black went for a senton, but while in the air Pentagón Dark was able to kip up and catch the South African wrestler before hitting him with the Pentagon Driver to end the match.
