The (r)Evolution of ECW

In the "offices" of ECW (which amounted to whatever coffee shop Paul Heyman happened to be setup at for the moment), the mad scientist of wrestling was up against the wall. ECW's accounts had been drained from years of trying to compete with the big boys but failing. Countless talent raids, sponsor revocations and everything under the sun had conspired against the once growing Extreme Championship Wrestling, and as Paul E. crunched the numbers, he realized that he couldn't keep the wolves at the gate anymore.

The last straw had been who he just got off the phone with. PPV wouldn't give him the money that he was immediately owed until he could guarantee another five shows that year. He couldn't guarantee even the one show this coming Sunday, if the coffers were as dry as the accounting books said they were. Added to the fact that they had lost their TV deal both in syndication and on national primetime, and they were in a real dilemma.

ECW still had a rabid fanbase. Still had loyal workers. And still had a roster that could deliver in a pinch. But Paul couldn't in good conscience keep the doors open much longer and drag guys out from getting a payday from Vince or, maybe even if Bischoff could turn that lumbering giant of WCW back from the dead. Paul sighed and resigned himself to the fact that, after this Sunday, ECW was as good as dead.

Then the phone rang.

Paul answered it, his voice giving away his frustration. If this was Vince wanting to set up another pay-per deal or even that slime ball Rob Black wanting a crossover with his growing "extreme" wrestling federation, he wasn't interested. No sense in delaying the inevitable.

It was something different.

As the conversation went on, Paul's face lit up like a kid on Christmas. Granted, it would only get them out of the hole and give them a little cash to work with. It wasn't much, but it was life. He smiled and nodded, saying he would take them at their word for the money. The next day, the contract would be signed, and Paul would be back in business.

There was a cost, though, Paul would have to change a few things around. But he was en route to doing that anyway. The hardcore style may have set ECW apart, but if they were to really grow, they would have the evolve into something greater. Something more than just garbage cans full of weapons and barbed wire tables. A new type of revolution was needed, and Paul knew just how to kick it off with a bang.

<p><em>With the financing having been secured to keep the doors open a little while longer, Paul Heyman had leaked to the ECW faithful that new signees were on the horizon, and that the card for Guilty as Charged had been revamped somewhat. Fans would still see Sandman take on Steve Corino for the ECW Title, but fans were going to tune in for a top flight show of ECW's best. It's all hands on deck as ECW is Guilty as Charged...</em></p><p> </p><p>

ECW Guilty as Charged

Hugh S. Greer Field House in Mansfield, CT

In Pre-show Dark Matches, Kid Kash d. Julio Dinero and Johnny Kashmere d. Amazing Red

Joey Styles welcomes us into Guilty as Charged, the first ECW Pay Per View of 2001 and the first ECW PPV of the New Extreme Championship Wrestling. Much speculation has been made about the direction this company would take, and now, to answer all the speculation, here is the owner and booker of Extreme Championship Wrestling, Mr. Paul Heyman.

Segment #1: This is ECW

Paul Heyman thanks everyone for coming to the arena tonight. He says that as early as a few days ago, he was resigned to the idea that this would be the final ECW Pay Per View, perhaps the last ECW event ever. For eight years he has poured his heart, his soul, and his money into this company. For eight years he has dedicated himself to presenting a world where professional wrestling can be something different. Can be cutting edge. And for eight years, he has succeeded, and he'll be damned if he's gonna stop now.

Thanks to last minute intervention by a fan, a lover of pro wrestling, even the Almighty himself, ECW has risen from the ashheap and will rise stronger than ever before. Tonight, you witness not only the continuation of the ECW you know and love, but the beginnings of a revolution in professional wrestling. Not that sports entertainment crap on the new TNN or whatever the hell they're calling themselves. Not that god forsaken "rasslin" they've got slumming it up in Eric Bischoff's new playground. This will be action of a new breed, and it starts tonight.

Because this my friends, is not the WWF. This is not WCW. This is EC F'N W, and it will never die.

Match #1: Christian York & Joey Matthews vs. "Confederate Currency" Chris Hamrick & EZ Money

We begin the new ECW with two youngsters who look to be among the brightest shining stars of the independent scene, York and Matthews. The two team up incredibly well, using high flying manuevers to counter the ground based offense of Hamrick and Money. The match wasn't a one-sided affair, but York and Matthews seemed to easily win with both of them finishing off Hamrick with a double diving knee drop from the top rope.

Winners by pinfall: Christian York & Joey Matthews

Segment #2: Enter Night...Exit Light

Sandman is backstage, apparently psyching himself up for his match with Steve Corino tonight. However when he turns around to cut a promo on Corino, he is blindsided from behind by Rhino. The Television Champion hits hammering lefts and rights on the Hardcore Icon, but the coup de grace is when Rhino gores Sandman into a garage door near by, bending the steel grate hard as he does so. He leaves Sandman on the ground clutching at his ribs and coughing up blood.

Segment #3: I'm from WCW...

As Joey Styles wonders what this does to our main event tonight, we cut back to ringside where Scotty Anton is in the middle of the ring. He cuts a promo on ECW, saying that he is the biggest star in the company because he's a former WCW Tag Team Champion! Scotty says that it doesn't matter who they send out tonight, because no one can compare to the sheer star power of Scotty...pause for dramatic effect....Anton.

Match #2: Scotty Anton vs. "Little" Spike Dudley

Mr. WCW got a face full of an ECW original in Little Spike Dudley, though. The crowd rallied around Spike, even though Anton managed to slow the pace of the match down and try to ground wrestle the one true Last Surviving Dudley. Spike rallied from behind as he often does, though, and managed to defeat Anton in the end with an Acid Drop.

Winner by pinfall: Spike Dudley

Match #3: Danny Doring & Roadkill vs. Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri & Mikey Whipwreck vs. Simon Diamond & Swinger

In what proved to be total chaos from start to finish, all four teams went at it, hell bent on winning the ECW Tag Team Titles. Surprisingly enough the most experienced team in the match, the FBI, were the first ones eliminated, as Little Guido ate a Bareback Breaker from Danny Doring and then a Buzzsaw Kick from Tajiri which put the FBI out of commission. The champs then were next, as Roadkill took a rolling elbow from Simon Diamond followed by a swinging neckbreaker from Swinger to eliminate them, ensuring that we would have new champions tonight. The battle between the Unholy Alliance and Simon/Swinger went back and forth as the match settled down from the early chaos. In the end, Tajiri was distracted briefly by Dawn Marie on the outside, but sprayed mist in her face. When he turned around though he was caught by the Simonizer and finished off!

Winners by pinfall and NEW ECW Tag Team Champions: Simon Diamond & Swinger

Segment #4: Old School Truth

Backstage, Joel Gertner is standing by with ECW World Champion Steve Corino. Gertner asks Corino if he had anything to do with Rhino attacking Sandman, and Corino merely laughs. He says Sandman got exactly what was coming to him, living this devil-may-care hardcore lifestyle. Tonight, if Sandman can tape up what's left of him to make it to the ring, Corino will be more than happy to finish off the Icon once and for all.

Match #4: Rhino vs. Nova

One of the most innovative offense makers of all time, Nova, seemed to draw the short straw as he went up against the Embodiment of Destruction in Rhino. The TV Champ was flummoxed early on as Nova used his quickness and odd arsenal of moves to try and throw off the champ. But Rhino's pure strength and power eventually won the day, as he hit a soul-shattering Gore on Nova and then finished him off with a Sitout Piledriver to retain his championship.

Winner by pinfall and STILL ECW TV Champion: Rhino

Segment #5: Escaping the Shadow

Backstage, we see Jerry Lynn talking into the camera. He talks about how he's done everything in the last year to try and escape the shadow of Rob Van Dam, and yet despite everything, including winning the ECW World Title, it didn't seem to be enough. So Jerry Lynn is going to prove once and for all that he is the better man.

Match #5: "The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam vs. "The New F'n Show" Jerry Lynn

The two storied rivals had put on classics before, but they seemed to pale in comparison to the workrate on display here. With the stipulation of 2 out of 3 falls, both men were eager to get the first fall in their back pocket and some margin for error. The first fall came after Lynn hit a Cradle Piledriver out of nowhere, but was lackadasial on the cover, getting caught by a crucifix by RVD and suffering a three count. RVD took control after that for a good five minutes, but Lynn was able to survive every attempt at putting him away. The tide turned when RVD missed a corkscrew leg drop to the outside, allowing Lynn to take advantage with a Cradle Piledriver to the floor. Van Dam was rolled inside the ring and Lynn scored the second fall. Back and forth everything went until the end, when Van Dam hit the Five Star Frogsplash from the top. There was suddenly a distraction by Cyrus on the outside, which got Bill Alfonso involved. Van Dam's brief distraction allowed Lynn to roll him up with a school boy and score the surprise three count, winning the match that was awesome, save for a somewhat tainted end.

Winner by Pinfall (2 Falls to 1): Jerry Lynn

Match #6: Tommy Dreamer vs. C.W. Anderson

If C.W. was hoping for an old school technical display, he was in for a disappointment. Tommy Dreamer brought the hardcore to the match, but Anderson could dish it out as well as take it. It turned into a brawling mess with garbage cans, tables and singapore canes strewn across the ringside area. In the end, Anderson went for a spinebuster, but Dreamer countered with a DDT into a trash can to pick up the victory.

Winner by Pinfall: Tommy Dreamer

Segment #6: That's Incredible

The victory was short-lived for Tommy Dreamer however, as Justin Credible came from the back area and waylayed the Innovator of Violence with a Singapore Cane. Beulah interfered, trying to save her man from being beaten down anymore, only for C.W. to come back to his senses and deliver a spinebuster to Beulah to the shock of Joey Styles.

Segment #7: Fit for Battle?

Steve Corino comes out for the ECW Title Match Main Event, confident that Sandman is nowhere to be found. Joey Styles makes mention of the fact that no one had seen Sandman since the assault by Rhino. Enter Sandman plays for a moment and Corino waits patiently, as Sandman doesn't show up. Paul Heyman comes out to talk with the ring announcer, but just as he appears to be ready to say Sandman is unable to compete, Sandman appears in the crowd, limping his way to the ring with taped up ribs. Corino seems incensed at the arrival of the challenger.

Match #7: Steve Corino vs. Sandman

Despite Sandman's brave entry into the ring, it became clear that his ribs were still in terrible shape. Sandman did manage to get some offense in the earlygoing, trying to throw Corino off his game, but timely interference from Jack Victory kept it from going too far. Corino then seemed less interested in defeating Sandman as much as he did ending him. Victory handed Corino a steel chair, which the King of Old School used to waylay Sandman straight across the head three times, quickly pinning him after the third chair shot.

Winner by Pinfall and STILL ECW World Heavyweight Champion: Steve Corino

Segment #8: Second Go Around

Corino and Victory didn't seem content to just beat Sandman, as after the match they continued to assault the Hardcore Icon. It seemed as if Sandman would be put out of his misery, when Rob Van Dam of all people came to his aid, chasing off Corino. The King of Old School and the Whole F'n Show stood toe to toe with one another, with Corino grabbing a mic and saying RVD had no business out here. Paul Heyman then chimed in and replied, saying that RVD had every business to be out here. Seeing as how Sandman was really in no shape to compete, Corino didn't give these fans a proper title defense. Therefore, we're going to have another world title match, right here, right now, Rob Van Dam vs. Steve Corino!

Match #8: Steve Corino vs. Rob Van Dam

Corino was obviously incensed by Heyman's actions, but there was little he could do other than try to escape. RVD wouldn't let him get through the crowd though, as the two brawled back and forth back to the ring. Van Dam was obviously in worse shape, given the fight he had with Lynn earlier in the night, and Corino used a rope a dope strategy once the match was truly underway before taking the lead. Corino thought he had the match won with an Old School Expulsion, but Van Dam barely managed a shoulder up at 2. The argument with referee John Finnegan allowed Van Dam to catch his second wind, and an intercepted chair from Jack Victory turned into a Van Daminator to Corino, followed by the Five Star Frogsplash for the surprise victory and NEW WORLD CHAMPION!

Winner by Pinfall and NEW ECW World Champion: Rob Van Dam

Match of the Night: Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn (69)

Segment of the Night: Paul Heyman Promo (70)

Final Event Rating: 60

The reception to Guilty as Charged had energized the somewhat bleak atmosphere of ECW lately. Both RVD and Jerry Lynn had something to hang their hat on, turning in a great performance that, while it might have been derivative of their previous work, was still top notch. And with RVD being given the world title as the new face of the company, it was easy to see his next big feud being with Lynn over the title, as Jerry had just beaten RVD clean as a sheet earlier in the night.

New lifeblood into ECW would also be a godsend. Trent Acid and Johnny Kashmere had already been approached before the closing rumors came about, but they were now joined by three signees out of Chicago. CM Punk had a natural charisma about him in the ring, and had a lot of upside. Chris Hero was of a similar vein, and Colt Cabana could be the next Stevie Richards in terms of comedy/ability melding. And one other major signee could arrive soon as well.

It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. We managed to convince him to stay on for one more month, but Steve Corino is likely going to be leaving for greener pastures. As a freelancer, that's not entirely a surprise, but it is disappointing as he's one of our most effective heels. The reaction to Chris Hamrick was nuclear "go-home" heat too, so he'll probably finish up right quick and then be shown the door.

But the best news of all was that the sweet talking by ECW's mysterious benefactor managed to get Hardcore TV back on the air. It's in a graveyard slot on Friday night, but at least its television exposure. We have some buildup time before Living Dangerously now, so hopefully we can get back on our feet in a more stable solution.

This Week on ECW Hardcore TV!

With a new ECW World Heavyweight Champion in Mr. PPV Rob Van Dam, the new era of Extreme has begun in earnest. However it is almost a certainty that the former champion, the King of Old School, will have something to say about the controversial way he lost his title. Plus, what is the condition of The Sandman following the brutal attack by Television Champion Rhino. Tune in this Friday to find out!
