MPW COLD NIGHT IN HELL

Friday, Week 4, November 1994

Live from New York City, NY

Show Rating: (C)

A Nasty Introduction! (B-)

Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags started off the show, getting the crowd hyped for the night with their usual Nasty Boys antics.

Mocking fans in the crowd, punking the time keeper, ”You know it’s going to be a Cold Night in Hell when the Nasty Boys are in a good mood!”

Brian Knobbs & Glen Osbourne vs. Chaz Warrington & Miguel Perez Jr. (D-)

Knobbs stays in the ring for this one as he is joined by his fellow Nasty Crew member, Glen Osbourne. The goth-painted lackey barely performed up to his potential as he and Knobbs escaped with a win over Chaz Warrington and Miguel Perez Jr. in what can be considered a sloppy bout with sub-par wrestling. Knobbs’ battle with his two broken fingers didn’t help matters much, as he acted like he could barely lift Perez for the match-ending powerslam that would come.

WINNERS: Brian Knobbs & Glen Osbourne in 8:19 via pinfall (Knobbs powerslam Perez Jr.)

Crash vs. Kane (D+)

After the tag team contest before, the entire building goes dark as gothic-music overtakes the speakers. After a suspenseful session of the organ, a giant man walks through the curtain. Wearing an outfit awoke in flames, a long dark-haired man reveals himself as the lights overcome the building. A black and red leather mask covers his face as he man receives a great response from the fans. He meets Crash inside the ring, the lovable yet, “slightly slower than most” bumbling babyface. For Crash, tonight was another night left on the mat while Kane impressed upon the MPW fans. The man played games with Crash the entire match, enforcing as much punishment as possible, before finally finishing him off with two choke slams in the middle of the ring. What’s to be made of this impressive debut? Who is this masked man and who is he aligned with?

WINNER: Kane in 12:24 via pinfall (chokeslam)

Locked & Loaded vs. Mad Society Killers (D+)

In a decent follow-up to the impactful debut of Kane, the tag team of Action Jackson and Johnny Gunn made good work of Mad Society Killer members: the schizophrenic Switchblade and the big man Tre Pidacion.

WINNER: Locked and Loaded in 9:51 via pinfall (Jackson blackbird thunder Switchblade)

A Diamond Debut (B)

Making his debut is the newest star of Metro Pro Wrestling: Diamond Dallas Page. Fresh off the expiration of his contract with WCW, DDP made a strong impression on the MPW fans, speaking on his past experiences with big names on the roster. He calls The Nasty Boys and their Nasty Crew a bunch of scum, and that they can kiss his ass whenever they want. He calls Sid Vicious a big hunk of meat with no mind of his own, and believes there is something darker behind the Mad Society Killers than simply Vicious at the head. He promises the take the MPW Championship from Vicious so he can give the fans a champion they truly deserve.

Bob Armstrong & Manny Fernandez vs. Friends on the Fringe

In the final tag team match of the evening, veterans Bob Armstrong and Manny Fernandez found themselves at odds against perhaps the two strangest characters in all of Metro Pro Wrestling: Al Snow and Perry Saturn. The two misfits barely fit in together, but the two solid midcard members of the Nasty Crew are not a bunch to be taken lightly. And that’s not to say Armstrong and Fernandez took the two “Friends” lightly. It’s just to say this match may have served the fans a nice reminder as to why they are to be taken seriously on all levels. And Saturn made impressive work on Armstrong, Snow exploded on Fernandez for the remainder of the bout until Saturn put away Armstrong with an impressive crossface submission.

WINNERS: Friends on the Fringe in 12:29 via submission (Saturn crossface Armstrong)

The Man Behind the Madness (C+)

The

theme music hits and out walks Sid Vicious with the MPW Championship draped over his shoulder. Once in the ring, he wastes no time introducing the "real man behind the madness", a man simply known as The Skull! Said leader makes his way through the curtains after the MSK theme hits again and out walks a shorter, older man sporting a wild hairdo and willowed beard. In fact, it becomes pretty apparent once The Skull says his first words that it’s Lou Albano sporting an older, more sadistic look to go along with the gimmick. "Yes, it’s true", the Skull says, "And now that the curtain is revealed, does it make much sense for this charade to continue?" He continues on about the charade we are all living in, day to day, hour by hour. For what is it all worth? For our withered skull to remain buried beneath the ruins of a failed society? It’s a mad, mad, mad world. And he’s out to destroy it. It’s with impressive men like Sid Vicious this company will fall victim to, and with it, it’s roster, until all admit submission under The Skull.

Jerry Sags [TNC] vs. Scott Steiner [MPW] (B-)

The crowd really came alive in just the third to last match of the night, pitting Nasty Boy Jerry Sags against babyface Scott Steiner. Sags started off the match-up strong and really didn’t allow Scott to gain much momentum until about 9 minutes in. After having taken a nasty chair shot on the outside, Scott fought his way back to an impressive win over Jerry after outlasting the big man through a series of failed pinfalls by Sags. Brian Knobbs almost got involved until Rick Steiner came from behind in the walkway and dragged Knobbs back to the locker room to prevent a screwy finish. And given the clean playing field, sometimes all it takes is a loose headlock to give the babyface all he needs to grab the brass ring, and Scott did just that, after a vicious Steiner screw driver.

WINNER: Scott Steiner in 16:18 via pinfall (Steiner screw driver)

Jake “The Snake” Roberts [N/A] vs. Rick Steiner [MPW] (B-)

Another strong match-up pit Jake Roberts against the other Steiner brother, Rick Steiner, in a dastardly one-on-one battle. The two were pitted evenly against one another, as Roberts played up on his usual bag of tricks as Rick played the victim turned bruiser very well. The two worked around each other’s strengths, as it became clear Roberts was working the match clean, putting together a solid display of professional wrestling. Steiner complimented things with an excellent comeback, but one that wasn’t enough to subdue “The Snake” for another night.

WINNER: Jake Roberts in 17:19 via pinfall (DDT)

MPW Championship

Sid Vicious © w/ The Skull [MSK] vs. Diamond Dallas Page [MPW] (B-)

The night’s main event came across as Metro Pro’s most heated match in its short history. There stood Sid Vicious, “World Destroyer”, certainly the most dominating villain in all of MPW. Across from him, the company’s biggest babyface to make his debut, and who better a man to do so against than the 6’9” champion. For the first time as well, Sid played the game with a taskmaster in his corner, The Skull. It was unsure what sort of diabolical tricks The Skull had up his sleeve, but it became clear very soon that he had more than just a few. Despite Vicious’ ability to handle himself against DDP single-handedly, The Skull played an important role in DDP’s plight for the night. After the hot promo earlier in the night, DDP certainly won himself over with the Metro Pro fans, but one could argue Sid won himself over even more as the more alternative New York crowd began to show itself in the wake of four monthly shows so far in the company’s history. They could now see just how good Sid was live. An enigma they just can’t help but watch in awe. Two great entertainers drove the crowd to the edge of their seats until the final pinfall, one that could have been DDP’s had The Skull not finally entered the ring after a second referee bump. Thumping a giant book throughout the entire match, The Skull nailed DDP straight in the forehead with a steel chair, allowing the champion to regain his composure and finish DDP off with an earth quaking powerbomb on the chair in the middle of the ring. After the three-count, Sid stood over DDP’s body as The Skull took to the fans and egged them on along the ringside, cheering on his dominating destroyer standing above in the ring.

WINNER: Sid Vicious in 23:33 via pinfall (release powerbomb)

DDP had called Sid <em>“Nothing but a big baffone!”</em> and <em>“One salami slice short of a halfway functioning brain!”</em> Sid came out and surrounded the ring for a hot minute, as DDP sold thin air on ice. The Skull made his appearance when he jumped over the railing and into the ring, attempting to distract DDP while Sid took to the ring. It didn’t work as DDP made quick work on the 6’9” monster and gave everyone a serious reason to believe he may be the only one in MPW that could bring Sid to his knees. They teased the Diamond Cutter but DDP couldn’t pull it off in time before the rest of the Mad Society Killers hit the ring and sent DDP running through the fans. Sid chased DDP outside and all the way to the barricades, yelling in the face of a rowdy Metro crowd. Albeit the two are still pretty green, they must have clicked enough to put on a match that had the crowd certainly buzzing following the pinfall. That wasn’t before Jericho impressed the New York crowd with his patented lionsault that really picked the crowd up later on. Van Dam was given a chance to win the fans over after an impressive senton dive to the outside that gave the young Jericho a tough load to catch. His rolling thunder combo also proved exciting, and marked the finish of the match which saw RVD miss a frog splash from the top rope, resulting in Jericho missing a finishing lionsault followed by RVD hitting the frog splash on a belly-downed Jericho. Nice match!</p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Rob Van Dam in 16:26 via pinfall <em>(frog splash)</em></p></div><p></p><p></blockquote></p><p> <blockquote style="border: 2px solid #000000;"></p><p><img alt="8hPQs35.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/8hPQs35.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="XdYFgYe.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/XdYFgYe.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p> <strong><span style="font-size:14px;">Bob Armstrong [</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#FF0000;">M</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">P</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#0000FF;">W</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">] vs. Jerry Sags [</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#800080;">TNC</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">] (</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#FF8C00;">C-</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">)</span></strong></p><p> Unfortunately, “Bullet” Bob Armstrong and “Nasty Boy”’ Jerry Sags didn’t have nearly as much of the chemistry Jericho/RVD had, or perhaps the match was simply laid out poorly. Either way, the fans had enough heat to prevent the match-up from being an awkward display, but not enough to make it one worth seeing once again. Perhaps the biggest flaw was how Armstrong was booked throughout the match. Sags was continually setting Armstrong up to take a big bump at some point in the match, but the two never pulled the trigger on it, leaving fans with a salty tastes in their mouth. Perhaps more ringside action would have helped? It remains unseen and hopefully never seen again.</p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Bob Armstrong in 15:10 via submission <em>(chickenwing)</em></p></div><p></p><p></blockquote></p><p> <blockquote style="border: 2px solid #000000;"></p><p><img alt="Gl0suFN.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/Gl0suFN.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="odXktnA.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/odXktnA.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="E4lcJHy.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/E4lcJHy.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p> <strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">MPW Championship</span></span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"> Sid Vicious © w/The Skull [MSK] vs. Perry Saturn [</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#800080;">TNC</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">] (</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#008000;">B-</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">)</span></strong></p><p> While many may have entered asking themselves how Perry Saturn earned a title shot against Sid Vicious, no one walked away dissatisfied with the match-up they had just seen. For at least fifteen minutes the two men gave each other a solid run for their money. Saturn may have caught Vicious off guard early on with his relentless work rate, not giving Vicious a single second to breath. Of course, that’s very hard to keep up over a longstanding period of time, and seven or eight minutes was all Saturn could get away with before the raw talent of Sid sporadically unleashed itself enough for The Skull to guide the champion back on a strong course. The champion pounded Saturn outside of the ring enough for everyone to buy into a slight appreciation for Saturn’s last chance comeback, but that rally was not enough to take the MPW Championship away from the “World Destroyer”.</p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Sid Vicious in 16:16 via pinfall <em>(chokeslam)</em></p><p> <strong><span style="font-family:'Arial Black';"><span style="font-size:24px;">MAD!</span></span></strong></p></div><p></p><p></blockquote></p><p> <blockquote style="border: 2px solid #000000;"></p><p><img alt="qrdEntB.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/qrdEntB.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="ZRo27Ar.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/ZRo27Ar.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p> <strong><span style="font-size:14px;">Diamond Dallas Page [</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#FF0000;">M</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">P</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#0000FF;">W</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">] vs. Jake “The Snake” Roberts [N/A] (</span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="color:#008000;">B-</span></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">)</span></strong></p><p> The night’s main event continued to culture a flaming hot crowd as Diamond Dallas Page gave it his all against the legendary Jake “The Snake” Roberts. DDP hit the ring heated and stayed that way pretty much the entire match. The two men, with such distinct differences from one another, played their hands well, each getting the one-up just when they needed it. But a pinfall wouldn’t come for over twenty-minutes as DDP continued to stay strong against the evil that is Jake “The Snake”. The fans stayed with both men all the way until the end, when they watched everyone’s favorite villain fall victim to a brilliant diamond cutter after the two teased it twice just before. Page played up his victory well, calling for the fans to celebrate his win along with him.</p><p> <strong><span style="font-family:'Arial Black';"><span style="font-size:24px;"><span style="color:#00FFFF;">BANG!</span></span></span></strong></p><p> They didn’t seem to have the chance, however, as Roberts tracked Page down near the post and delivered a hellish beating in response to his loss. To not many people’s surprise, The Skull made his way down to the ring, rubbing his precious human skull in hand. He is flanked by Sid Vicious, who defeated DDP last month to retain his newly won MPW Championship. The Skull egged Jake on, calling for more punishment for DDP, but Jake soon grew weary of The Skull’s non-stop demands and bantering, and eventually gave him a piercing stare. This triggered Vicious, the trigger-man for The Skull, to step forth in between the two. Now The Skull was baiting Roberts to put his hands on him, <em>”Come here you filthy snake! Come see what the madness is all about!”</em> Jake, remaining as stone cold as ever, simply walked over to his bag at the edge of the ring and brought his snake out into the middle of the ring! He held it in such a way as giving the snake full clearance to reach out and bite anyone who stood in front of it! And The Skull was having absolutely none of it! He scattered as quickly as possible, showing a serious switch in his demeanor upon the reveal of the snake from the bag. Roberts teased releasing his snake on DDP, but the babyface was able to escape before Roberts could unleash more backlash. Instead, he turned towards the fans and sent them home happy with some crowd spots with his “little guy”.</p><p> <strong>WINNER</strong> Diamond Dallas Page in 21:43 by pinfall <em>diamond cutter</em></p></div><p></p><p></blockquote></p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="44366" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">PREDICTION CONTEST</span></strong></p></div><p> crackerjack - 7/8</p><p> Dcyd - 5/8</p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p></div><p></p>

Paul Heyman has reportedly instructed his guys to refuse negotiations with MPW, calling them a risk to their product. Heyman feels Dana White is either going to split the market down the middle with two competing products, or he is attempting to steal Heyman's thunder and pawn off a substitutable product.
