It was raining in Switzerland. He took the keys from the ignition and turned off the car lights. Parked, he exited the vehicle, and entered the small gray building through the bright red entrance.

Matthew Macks was in the front. The VWA Swiss Champion, and headliner, was waiting. Probably heard something about a pay raise or performance bonus.

"Tonight's the big night"

said Macks, knowing very well next month, against Thunderbolt, was

actually

the big night. But he was in the main, against our star performer.

He'd be forgiven.

"Matthew"

said the boss

"Don't do anything stupid. That goes double for Marc, okay? I'm counting on you, here"

.

Marc had yet to show. Worrying, thought Albert, it was worrying, but most of the guys wouldn't be here until 15 before bell. Things worked differently in Switzerland.

Marc had shown up high once before, but with a talent like that, you have to put up with the occasional gaffe.

"Will do, will do"

he said. Matthew flexed his left bicep.

He then slaps on the Crucifix Neck Crank and keeps cinching it tighter until Ewe turns a bit purple and lets up. After a few kicks, the masked man disappears, moving down the hallway. Papa O’Keefe, who saw the attack, is stunned.

In an unremarkable three-on-three encounter, Brilliant White takes out Evil Spirit with the White Out

Papa O’Keefe is backstage with Don Henderson and Billy Robinson. He’s a bit shaken from earlier, and asks them about their upcoming match against the Youth Bandits. Robinson says this will be The Shooters’ final run – once the team gets defeated, they hang up the boots. Don Henderson agrees, and says that any means necessary will be used in the final at VWA Presents Victory Road next month. Surprise! Landon Mallory, the VWA European Champion, congratulates the two, and says they’ll be champs soon yet.

He shows off his shiny European Championship belt. Papa O’Keefe warns him to be careful – there’s a masked madman afoot. Landon says security can take care of the intruder, but says he won’t back down from the mysterious ne’er do well.

In an impressive match, Gram Gorman pins JOJI after hitting the Gorman Aghast

“I don’t fear Lauro. He’s not in my league, even close. What do I fear? Unpredictability. Instability. Chicanery. Things Lauro has, but not his strength or wile. I’m going to take him down tonight, before I take my rightful place as the true ruler of the alps”

. Makinen then exits into the ring, a puff of smoke emanating from the entrance way.

Mäkinen, heated, comes running down to the ring. He slides under the ropes, and then runs the ropes. He climbs to the top rope and hoists his hands to the air. After several cheers, he backflips into the ring.

Giordano boots it down the ramp, before launching into the ring, and landing on his knees. He backflips, landing on his feet. Lauro taunts his opponent.

The two lock up. Quickly, Konrad overpowers Giordano. Reflexively, Lauro slams his knee into Mäkinen’s stomach. He takes control, throwing Lauro with an Irish Whip, and placing him into the turnbuckle. He slams his knee below the belt. Mäkinen writhes, stiff kicks from Giordano causing severe pain. He picks up Mäkinen – Jackhammer! Lauro lands several stiff elbows to his downed opponent.

He transitions to a headlock, and for several seconds, inflicts pain onto Mäkinen.

It’s clear at this point Mäkinen hasn’t quite healed from last month’s assault – big scars cover his face, red bruising on his forehead. Giodarno transitions, lands a stiff kick to Mäkinen’s head. Mäkinen breaks the hold, picks up Giodarno, and slams Giodarno to the ground with a powerbomb!

Mäkinen begins a stirring comeback. He lands several hard strikes to Giodarno, first dropping a leg before landing several punches from the mount. He then picks himself up – and hits a standing moonsault! He backflips, hits the ropes, and then Lauro hits him with a low blow!

Lauro tries to pull Mäkinen in for the powerbomb. He lifts Mäkinen up, but Mäkinen reverses it, hitting a Samurai Driver! Mäkinen lifts himself up – Lauro lies in wait and gets his knees up! Lauro slowly gets to his feet. Mäkinen, quicker, charges towards him --- back body drop to the outside!

Lauro charges to the outside – he hits Mäkinen with the toupee! Lauro clears off the announce table. He again picks up Konrad. Mäkinen reverses it into a cutter and slams Lauro’s head onto the announce tables’ edge! Lauro busts wide open.

Martin Bloydell and Papa O’Keefe have none of it.

Mäkinen gets to his feet. He throws Lauro into the announce table, landing several stiff strikes to him, and further bloodies Giodarno. He puts Lauro onto the announce table. Mäkinen pulls himself onto the turnbuckle, and leaps into the air. Giondarno manages to get his knees up. Mäkinen hits the frog splash through the table! A spark flies from the crushed electrical equipment inside.

The referee begins the count-out. For several seconds, neither wrestler shows any sign of life. Mäkinen begins to crawl towards the ropes, from the wreckage, but can’t make it back to the ring. Medics rush out from the back.

The referee rules the match a double count-out.

Konrad Mäkinen drew with Lauro Giordano when both combatants were counted out after going through the announce table.

Tonight, Marc, you get to take a shot at the Champion, Matthew Macks. You win? He vacates the belt. Awful confident that he accepts this challenge

” says O’Keefe. Marc responds, “

Awful? Confident? Yes, yes. He’s both – awful and confident. But, Matthew, I know how to beat you. Beat you up. Remember, I have been you before. I know every thought, every weak spot, every move – every move before you do

”.

“

You’re confident – so confident, oddly secure with your entourage. But you aren’t smart, or wise, enough to come out unscathed. Tonight, I’m going to teach you a lesson – break you like a stubborn horse – right down the spine

”.

Marc slings the strap over his shoulder. It makes a loud sound, a snap, and Marc points at the camera.

Marc DuBois jogs slowly down to the ring. Shadowboxing. He takes off his sweatshirt, hands it to the timekeeper, revealing a skin-tight white wifebeater.

He asks for a microphone.

“

Matthew Macks, a new era has begun, it’s too bad you aren’t a part---

“

The champion interrupts him. Macks drags his strap on the ground. He points at the logo on his hat – “new era”.

He throws off his windbreaker, revealing the belt around his waist. Macks points at the belt.

He walks into the ring. The referee gets over the rules, kindly taking the microphone from DuBois, who stares him down.

Head Referee Jackie Goldstein gives the microphone to Dubois.

The champion slaps his opponent. He takes the dropped microphone.

“

Old man, it’s high time you stopped mooching off my hard work

”! Macks stares down DuBois. “

You aren’t young enough for the new era

”!

The champion tosses the microphone from the ring. The ring bell sounds – Marc DuBois charges at Macks. Clothesline! The Champion is on the floor – Marc whips him several times with the harness. He slams the harness into his back several times. Marc then uses the strap to choke Macks, and for several seconds, Matthew struggles for air.

He tries to tap, but it isn’t any use. There are no DQs, no countouts. As the announcer explains, the strap ties the two competitors together. The winner has to touch all four corners, in a row, to win the match.

Papa O’Keefe imagines that one man will have to knock the other guy out before he can win the match.

Marc DuBois continues to lay into Matthew Macks. He brutalizes the champion, laying in several stiff kicks, before flipping Macks over.

Macks, reflexively, slams his foot into DuBois’ groin. He pulls himself up, rakes DuBois’ eyes, and throws him to the ground with a Russian legsweep. Matthew grabs the blooded strap, ties it off, and pulls it over DuBois’ mouth. He cranks it harder and harder for several seconds, before transitioning to headscissors quickly. He grabs the ropes to add leverage.

Marc Dubois, with the last of his will, manages to get to the ropes, and bridges out with the leverage. He charges at Matthew, who pulls himself up, and slams Marc to the mat with a leaping cutter! Both combatants, clearly winded, slowly get up, with Matthew Macks first to his feet.

Then, Matthew drags his hostile opponent towards the friendly corner. Marc DuBois trips him, and begins to slam the bloodied Matthew Macks into the turnbuckle. He touches the corner. Marc, then, takes control, going across the ring to the far corner. He lays into Matthew for several seconds. He begins to choke out Macks again with the strap. For several seconds, Macks writhes, before DuBois jumps on top the turnbuckle and lands on the apron. He chokes out the champion for a few more seconds.

Then, Marc leaps up, and hits a slingshot DDT to Macks. He touches the second ringpost.

Suddenly, the masked man charges down towards the ring! He hits several hard punches to DuBois, before switching to knees, and finally stiff kicks! He rolls Marc into the clinch, landing several punches, before restraining him with the strap.

The man signals at the champion. Slowly, Matthew stumbles towards him. They continue to beat Marc, for several seconds, before touching the left ringpost, the second ringpost on the bottom left, the right bottom ringpost, and then the right top ringpost.

The referee sounds the bell. The bleeding champion, gushing blood, rolls from the ring, stammering for several seconds. He stumbles up the ring ramp.

Matthew Macks defeats Marc DuBois in a Strap Match after touching all four ringposts thanks to interference from the masked man!

The man then takes a semi-conscious Marc to the center-ring. He begins to apply the crucifix neck crank….

Landon Mallory charges down to the ring, clotheslining Macks! The champ is out cold! He slides into the ring, breaking up the hold!

The man rolls from the ring.

“

Alright! I’ve had enough! This won’t happen any more!” Mallory says. “What do you want here, masked cretin

?”

The man points at the belt and signals for the title.

Mallory looks to the European Title on his shoulder. “

Okay, that’s permissible, if, and only if, you quit attacking people

”! Mallory clearly isn’t happy about this development.

The man clearly isn’t impressed. He signals for the title, again makes the sign, pointing.

“

Okay, I get it! You aren’t en-TITLE-d

” --- Mallory thinks he’s made a great pun here, and pauses for emphasis.

It didn’t work too well.

“—

to anything. If I retain in our match, then you’ll unmask and leave the territory. If you win, you get to become champion, and I forfeit the rematch clause

” says Mallory.

The masked opponent isn’t impressed.

“

Unless, of course, you don’t have the cajones, brother

”! Mallory points at the masked man, before laughing.

The masked man shakes his head, indicating that the challenge now has been accepted. He’s still not impressed, slumped over, and stares down Mallory.

He runs a thumb across his neck.
