BCF New Year’s Press Conference

Good morning, I am Charlie Knight and this is the first ever State of the BCF press conference. We are currently rated as being a High Level Regional company, Blurcat has pegged us at being 68% regional popularity in the UK. Last year we held 11 shows; 2 in Scotland, 1 each in the Midlands and the North of England and the remaining 7 in London. These shows included two Best of British shows, broadcast on the internet and the rest were pay per views. This year we aim to hold 12 shows and we will standardise our shows to be on the third Saturday of each month thus making BCF appointment viewing. The plan is to hold two Best of British shows and the rest to be pay per views. Additionally, we plan to hold more shows outside of our traditional base in London, we are aiming for 2 shows each in the Midlands and the North to go with 3 in Scotland and 1 in Wales, and in so doing expand our reach through the British Isles with the intention of expanding into Europe next year and then potentially into Australia and Africa in the longer term.

In 2001 Carter Potter defended his Heavyweight title twice, against Stafford Alois and Vic Millican. His next defence will be against Percy Catcher later this month. Catcher lost to Harry Milne in what was Milne’s retirement fight but bounced back to KO Perry Barr. Alois will face Millican in an attempt to get back on track towards a potential title fight and Fritz Phipps and Mark Bicknell will face off in a likely title eliminator in February. Further down the rankings we have young guys like Tyke Milligan, Christopher Drew, Quentin Beecraft and Morgan Wakarewarewa who are all potential break out stars. Likewise, we have old hands like Dave Lennon and Barr who could make late runs toward the title. Additionally, we are looking to bring in some new names, most notably Jesse Singh and Hanif Hussain along with developmental fighters George Brabazon-Plank, Laurence Lamping and Schalk Rhodes.

Lenny McFadden knocked over Garry McSweegan to pick up the Light Heavyweight belt that was vacated by Curt Kitson leaving for ALPHA-1. Tikhon Diev continued his inexorable march towards a title fight by retiring George Laurent and TKOing Daniel Hornsby. That title fight will be in Scotland at some point around the middle of the year. Danny Akabaro and Fabien Schar are both slightly undersized for 205 but have earnt their way into a title eliminator due to strong performances in the past year that have built onto their undefeated records, the loser may well drop down to middleweight. Elsewhere we have McSweegan trying to bounce pack into title contention with Hornsby and Adrian Majoram being in similar positions. In terms of prospects guys like Matthew Michael Kirby and Crow Leddy are ones to watch as future title contenders.

In the Middleweight division Rob Baines finally won the title by choking out Davis Spyrou and then defended it by heel-hooking Hans-Peter Schneider. Baines will defend his title against Henning Olsen in February in London. Ginger Beaumont and Ivor Orr will face off for the number one contender spot and someone will lose their undefeated record. Further down the rankings we will look to old hands Spyrou, Schneider, Ram Phookan and Tucker Plumm to bounce back into contention as all but Schneider are former champs. On the opposite end of the age spectrum are up and comers like Charlie Oakley, Heath Kaladaris, Ollie Castle and Snuffy Fontana. And of course, you can never write off the striking of Edgar van den Hoogenband. As far as new names we are looking to bring in Dennis Gallagher, Jemaine McKenzie and Shaun Dico.

Welterweight was wonderfully exciting through 2001 and will hopefully continue to be so through 2002. Much of the excitement came from Mills Mullally beating Will Kane in Kane’s final BCF bout, Mullally then proceeded to lose to David Webb throwing the division wide open for the second time in the year. Webb will likely face Steven Griffin in his first defence after Griffin had two great matches that ended in submission victories. Iain Fussell will face off with Timothy Latchkey in a title eliminator as both are on good winning streaks and are surging up the rankings. This gives both Vikram Sithalayan and Mullally a chance to regain some momentum as Sithalayan in particular needs to be very impressive in order to earn a fourth fight with Webb. As far as prospects go the two most promising are hard hitting Martin Cupples and well-rounded Jayden Karp as both could be champions and Karp in particular could be a handful for anyone. Looking at new additions the one I am most excited about is murderous puncher Brian O’Flaherty and hopefully joining him will be Vjekoslav Sarich.

At Lightweight we once again sent a fighter to a bigger organisation on a loss after Doug Hansen got past Seth O’Breen to become the new champion. Hansen is now on a role and will hopefully face off with George Astaire on the same Scottish as the Light Heavyweight title fight. In a number one contender bout we will have Tim Oldacres fighting Dom Yorke. Further down the rankings we have undefeated prospects like Gregory O’Hara, Rupert Lennox, Irving Braun and Enar Igonen who could all breakthrough to the next level very soon. We also have old title contenders and holders like Gordon Idle and Jochen Bellof who could rebound into contention with a few good wins. The only new name we are looking to bring in at this point is Paddy McNamara.

In terms of adding new weight classes we are looking to the Featherweight division at some point down the line but that will not happen this year. With regards to roster management we are going to try to avoid sharing fighters with SIGMA as it is simply very hard to manage effectively.

Otherwise, thanks for listening and keep an eye out for our first official card of 2002.

Carter Potter looks to make his third defence of the BCF Heavyweight Title which would tie the record set by Stafford Alois.

BCF: Potter vs Catcher Results

Charlie Knight:

Gate was 844 people for $103 981. Fight of the night was Lennon vs Barr, KO of the night was Chris Drew, submission of the night was Carter Potter.

James Archibald (Blurcat):

The prelims started a bit dull where do those performances leave those guys?

CK:

Edgar van den Hoogenband vs Paul Goodfellow was average, I had higher hopes for these guys as they are both finishers. While it was a bit disappointing and it could have been better but Edgar will proceed on his way up the rankings. Potenkin vs Beecraft was trash! And that is all I’m going to say. Morgan thank you for a finish big man and you might just get Linton Renn after that showing. You cleaned up Howard so well. Then it was a dominant display from Fontana, tuning Fish up on the feet and then wrecking him on the ground. Hopefully this is a jumping off point for him to move up the rankings. Good adaptability shown by Heath Kaladaris, lost the first on the feet with Buck striking well then rebounded brilliantly.

JA:

Dave Lennon is now on a two-fight winning streak against high level competition where is he in relation to the title?

CK:

Dave made a statement tonight. He is on a roll and will probably find himself in a #1 contender bout next time out.

JA:

Christopher Drew is also now on a winning streak, how does he figure into the divisions plans?

CK:

Chris had a really strong display and is starting to build a bit of momentum. We will see about the Bicknell call out after Bicknell’s #1 bout next month.

JA:

How do you proceed with the Middleweight division now as Beaumont vs Orr was billed as a title eliminator but do you think Ginger will fight Rob Baines if he retains next month?

CK:

Firstly, I think Archibald Cohen was well off with his scoring, I had it 3-0 to Beaumont. Hats off to Orr for staying in it after getting rocked in the first but Beaumont did enough and will be the next title challenger after next month if he wants the fight. It is an awkward situation for Ginger and Rob as they are not only teammates but also Rob is his primary trainer, but this is all dependant on Rob winning next month so we will see how it all plays out.

JA:

Staying at Middleweight, Davis Spyrou destroyed Schneider. Where does that leave both fighters?

CK:

Davis is right back in the mix! That was exceptionally dominant. Hans-Peter is in a weird place now and will need some big results to work his way back into contention.

JA:

Then the title fight, Potter was dominant, is there anyone who can beat him?

CK:

Look he was brilliant, outstruck the striker then took him down and finished it with ease. I do think that some of the younger guys could potentially get it done against him but that is the beauty of MMA isn’t it? The unknown.

JA:

Lastly, what is your take on the racist comments made by Toby Sorkin?

CK:

There is no place for racism, in any form, in any sphere of society. It is disgraceful. If that’s all the questions then I’ll see you guys again soon.

Quick Results

Carter Potter Submitted (Rear Naked Choke) Percy Catcher

London, Saturday Week 3 February

Main Event

‘The Sandman’ Rob Baines (33-11) vs Henning ‘The Terminator’ Olsen (18-7) for the BCF Middleweight Championship

A duel between two veterans of the Middleweight division for the title that Rob Baines took off Davis Spyrou last year. Olsen will try to avoid Baines’ unrelenting submission game while simultaneously trying to pick him apart on the feet.

Co-Main

Stafford Alois (28-11) vs Vic Millican (20-6) – Heavyweight Bout

Two veterans in the Heavyweight divisions looking to put themselves back into the title picture off of losses. Alois has lost two on the bounce while Millican last lost to Carter Potter in a title fight.

Main Card

Fritz Phipps (9-1) vs Mark Bicknell (11-3) – Heavyweight #1 Contender Fight

Fritz Phipps is a young name in an aging heavyweight division who is coming off two wins over middle ranked heavyweights and now gets the opportunity to stake a claim for a title shot against Potter. Trying to take that claim for himself is Mark Bicknell who is getting a chance to truly break through into the upper echelon of the Heavyweight division for the first time.

Carter Potter Forms Demolition Crew

Carter Potter has announced the formation of a new MMA gym that will cater for professional level athletes. It is to be called Demolition Crew and will be based in Cardiff, Wales where the New Zealander Potter has made his home for many years now. It appears that this move has been well received by a number of fighters as Light Heavyweight Crow Leddy, Middleweights Heath Kaladaris and Ivor Orr as well Welterweight Iain Fussell have all confrimed that they will be training out of the new gym for the long term. In addition there are a number of fighters who would be considered visitiors to the gym in the form of Charlie Oakley, Linton Renn, Morgan Wakarewarewa, Sid Morgan and Tim Oldacres.

As a reporter who specialises in British MMA, I believe that the more opportunities for elite fighters to receive elite training (even if that training is from a somewhat polarising public figure like Potter) the better the sport will be.

BCF: Baines vs Olsen Results

Charlie Knight:

Gate was 862 for $106 198. Fight of the night was Rob Baines vs Henning Olsen, submission of the night was also Baines, knock out of the night was Ollie Castle and Jerome Atkins gets a performance bonus.

James Archibald (Blurcat):

Jesse Singh won the fight between two BCF debutants, what were your thoughts on that fight?

CK:

Jesse Singh destroyed Bast Moulke, teed off on him and Bast had no answer! He really proved that he deserved the chance to fight in BCF after being a true stalwart of the British local scene for many years.

JA:

Kruglov threatened on the ground early but then seemed to be happy to simply negate Buzzy Tuttle’s game, what are your thoughts on his performance?

CK:

Ats Kruglov was dominant on the ground in the first but seemed content to just do the bare minimum to get the win, its disappointing because Tuttle tried to make the fight and there could be an argument made for each guy winning each round. But I do think that Kruglov won the fight, fair and square. I do think that Sarich is a good fight though and could be interesting. Additionally, Buzzy is a very small welterweight and I would not be surprised to see him move down to lightweight in the future.

JA:

Kush Singh had talked a big game but wound up getting quite comprehensively beaten, what is your take on that?

CK:

I don’t mind talking trash but if you are going to talk trash then you have to back it up. Kush didn’t manage to do that at all! Mahoney dominated him on the feet and then Singh gassed, fell into the clinch, got taken down and got submitted easily. Credit to Malloy as he was excellent but if you are going to talk trash then you have to back it up.

JA:

All the Blurcat writers had picked Caragh Green to beat Jerome Atkins on the strength of his grappling.

CK:

Yeah, you guys didn’t have a great night, did you? If you are going to stand with Jerome Atkins you are likely to get knocked out, that’s what happened to Caragh tonight. Game planning is vital in MMA and he will hopefully learn from this. Jerome at least showed that he is able to impose his will on a fight.

JA:

Constantin Burlacu earned his first BCF win tonight what were your thoughts on his fight?

CK:

Constantin was impressive and Linton was disappointing. Burlacu picked Renn apart. Linton was very tentative and completely unable to get into his work. Constantin gets his first BCF win. Good, relevant call out of the other dominant Heavyweight display on the prelims, I don’t see why Jesse Singh shouldn’t be next for him.

JA:

Tyke Milligan was being talked as a real prospect but came up well short tonight, where does that leave him and Ozzy Bintley who conversely was really good tonight?

CK:

All the hype was around Tyke Milligan, well Ozzy proved that he is not to be taken lightly. Dominated on the feet, cut him up, then when Milligan did manage to get some grappling started Bintley took him down, mounted him and finished the fight. Brilliant all-round display from Ozzy. Losing is a part of MMA and how Tyke responds to this will be key to deciding how far he can actually go in this sport.

JA:

Ollie Castle picked Tucker Plumm apart, where does that leave him?

CK:

Ollie Castle! What a display, he absolutely blasted Tucker over and over again. Brilliant display of striking and he is on his way up the rankings.

JA:

In the number one contender fight the Blurcat writers were again shown up as we all picked Mark Bicknell but Fritz Phipps was impressive.

CK:

It was a battle between two good wrestlers and Fritz Phipps showed off his striking in the first before getting slammed by Mark Bicknell and potentially losing the round but then came back to absolutely pick Bicknell apart on the feet in the second, then Fritz knocked him down and pounded him out. The de-facto leader of the next generation of heavyweights will get the next title shot and he showed tonight that he is comfortable on his feet as well as in the grappling.

JA:

The other high-profile Heavyweight fight was Alois vs Millican, two veteran strikers and Alois got the win by KO, where does that leave him?

CK:

A striking battle that was won by the more technical striker. Alois gets himself back on the road towards a potential rubber match with Carter Potter. Millican doesn’t fall too far but definitely has a somewhat longer road towards title contention.

JA:

Rob Baines and Henning Olsen was a classic striker vs Grappler match and it was a great iteration of that age-old battle, what were your thoughts on that fight?

CK:

What a main event! Round 1 started with Henning picking Rob apart on the feet, then Rob takes Henning down and has the rear naked choke locked in as time runs out. Then the second round starts the same way but when Baines shoots in he eats a massive knee and nearly gets finished on the ground by strikes but eventually toughs it out and gets out of the round. So, we are sitting at one round each and both fighters have been in danger of being finished. The third follows the same pattern of Olsen dominating on the feet before Baines tries for a takedown, only this time Henning grabs the cage twice but he can’t stop the inevitable as he gets taken down and Rob does what he does and gets the choke. Brilliant fight!

JA:

Carter Potter’s name has been around this card a lot despite him not fighting on it, but he has also been in the news for founding his own gym.

CK:

Yeah, I encouraged him to do it actually. Demolition Crew provides another training option for pro fighters based in the British Isles and more options is always a good thing for the calibre of fighter that will be produced.

JA:

Lastly, there some former BCF Lightweight Champions on the last GAMMA Battle Lines show, one won and one lost. What were your thoughts on their performances?

CK:

Jake Keane lost his title to Lermontov, who we all knew was a tank from his time in SIGMA, so there is no shame in that. The fact that he won the GAMMA title is a huge boon for us as a company because it shows that we have high level fighters. Seth O’Breen getting his first GAMMA win will hopefully set him on the right path. I think he has taken a bit longer to settle in on account of losing his last fight for us to Doug (Hansen), but he is a world-class fighter and showed it with a dominant display.

BCF Signs a Broadcast Deal with Euro Cable Sports 1

BCF and Euro Cable Sports have come to an agreement to air 7 BCF shows over the next 2 years and 4 months. “This deal took a lot of negotiation and is a huge step forward for BCF and our objective of expansion into Europe” said BCF president Charlie Knight. It has been decided that BCF will move their Best of British series of shows onto Euro Cable Sports’ primary channel.

This announcement does leave BCF’s relationship with UK Broadcasting’s Digital channel up in the air as they had previously carried the Best of British series. It seems as though both parties are happy to let the contract run its course. Charlie Knight said “this deal will effectively mark the end of deal with UK Broadcasting Digital. Ultimately this gives us more exposure in wider audiences and a more stable income level per show. Likewise, UKBD were looking for a more consistent, regular type of show, as such this deal is a win win for both of us.”

This deal does mark a major step forward for BCF’s attempts to expand into both Europe and Russia and will open further expansion opportunities in the future.

Doug Hansen Joins Demolition Crew

BCF Lightweight champion Doug Hansen has joined Carter Potter’s new gym, Demolition Crew. This is a massive coup for the new gym and now means that the Cardiff based gym have two current BCF champions training there. “I have always organised my own training camps but I do believe that having a more permanent home will be to the benefit of my MMA in the long-term” said Hansen. Carter Potter released a statement saying that he was excited to have another high-quality fighter to contribute to the training and development of the team, in particular the lighter weight classes. This news follows hot on the heels of Linton Renn leaving the gym, on the back of losing to Constantin Burlacu, after about a month training there.

In other gym news, 22-year-old heavyweight prospect Tyke Milligan is leaving Rob Baines Fighting. This is a surprise despite Milligan suffering his first professional loss last time out against Ozzy Bintley by TKO. It is surprising because Rob Baines was the primary reason behind BCF hiring Milligan and convincing the up and comer to give up his job as a fireman to train full time. “Yeah, Rob has been massive for my career so far, there is no denying that and I don’t want to diminish what he did for me, but, my stand up is the biggest hole in my skillset and you don’t improve that when training at Rob Baines Fighting” said Milligan. Rob Baines said “I am disappointed that Tyke has decided to leave as I had seen him as a protégé of mine and put a lot of time and effort into him. However, if he thinks that this is best for his career then I wish him the best”.

Gustavo Spagnol Signs with BCF

It did not take long for Gustavo Spagnol’s move to Spain to pay off. It has been announced today that Spagnol has signed a contract with BCF. The light heavyweight fought for the now defunct Fight League Brasil from 1998 until its closure in 2001. Between FLB and the South American local circuit he built up a professional record of 7-1 which included an upset of Pedro Sousa in 2001 and a TKO of Marcos Maciel earlier this year.

“Spagnol is a vicious ground and pound specialist and will immediately make a splash in an already stacked division in BCF” said Charlie Knight, BCF president. “I am so happy to get this opportunity so soon after making the move to Europe. I firmly believe that I can become champion in BCF very soon” said Gustavo Spagnol.

This is sure to be an exciting addition to the BCF Light Heavyweight division that is already loaded with young contenders to Lenny McFadden’s title like Tikhon Diev, Danny Akabaro and Fabian Schar.

It was a great show and was surprised to see Atkins' performance, he is lethal standing but needs to get better at keeping it there. Thanks for following.

Birmingham, Week 3 March 2002

Main Event

David ‘Spider Man’ Webb (19-5) vs ‘The Baby-Faced Assassin’ Steven Griffin (17-8) for the BCF Welterweight Championship

David Webb looks to make the first defence of the title he won from Mills Mullally against tough allrounder Steven Griffin. Griffin is getting his first crack at a BCF title coming off wins over Buzzy Tuttle and Mikey Wallace. The welterweight division has had two new champions crowned in its last two title fights, Griffin will look to make it a third by overcoming Webb’s grappling.

Co-Main

Ram Phookan (11-6) vs Andrew Rush (18-10) – Middleweight Bout

In a division where the stated number one contender is a training partner of the champion there may be room for one of these veterans with title fight experience (Phookan was a champion, Rush challenged Davis Spyrou unsuccessfully) to make a statement and put themselves in contention for the title once more. It should be a stand-up battle between Phookan’s boxing and Rush’s kickboxing.

BCF: Webb vs Griffin

Charlie Knight:

Gate was 754 for $75 400. Fight of the night was Kamoze and Igonen and they get $2500 instead of the regular $1000 for their war, submission of the night was Sid Morgan and Knock Out of the night was Matas Fialkowska.

James Archibald (Blurcat):

Hanif Hussain was a guy you mentioned in your New Year’s Press Conference as being someone that you were looking to bring in, what did you make of his debut?

CK:

Hanif made a strong debut. He showed off good sprawl which was a slight concern of mine and then of course he showed off the striking which is what made his name. Great debut against a British stalwart like Portman.

JA:

I imagine that you were less than thrilled with the fight that followed him though, what is your take on Rebottaro vs Houghton?

CK:

Rebottaro vs Houghton was virtually a loser leaves town fight so Houghton is gone and on the back of that fight I suspect Max won’t be too far behind him. Not much more to be said really.

JA:

The next Heavyweight debutant was somewhat less hyped up but really put in a good display.

CK:

Yeah, Matas Fialkowska got given a very tough debut against Reynolds. Probably tougher than most of our other debutants and he absolutely dominated. What a statement making performance, probably a 10-8 round in the first, broke Baer’s nose. Then needed just 37 seconds in the second round. Brilliant debut.

JA:

Sproule and Petursson was much more even than the previous bout, what did you think about their fight?

CK:

Jeremy Sproule and Olafur Petursson went to war for a round and in the end Olafur blinked first. Similar fight to Max and Conor because they are both low ranked fights but completely different because these boys actually fought for their jobs.

JA:

After that fight it seemed like the prelims could be really entertaining, Gunnlaugsson vs Clement continued that trend, didn’t they?

CK:

Ragnar looked to be getting out struck initially but ended up cracking Bret’s chin and put him away. Another short war. Credit to Ragnar and hopefully he can kick on, up the welterweight rankings.

JA:

Igonen vs Kamoze then proceeded to out do all the guys who went before them, what were your thoughts on this potential Fight of the Year candidate?

CK:

Enar and Cyril went to war on the feet which followed the pattern from most of the other prelims. Cyril nearly finished it in the second but Enar fought back bravely but Cyril ultimately had too much. Overall a fantastic fight from two blokes who just kept moving forward. They definitely earned their big bonus.

JA:

Opening the main card was Mullally vs Cupples. Some would say that it was an average fight. What did you make of it?

CK:

Mills and Martin put on the best display of boxing in MMA that you could possibly ask for. Absolute war, so technical from both guys. I would not like to be a judge for that fight, it was so so so tight. Either guy would have been a worthy winner. As it stands Mills is a step towards another shot at the title and Martin probably needs 2 or 3 wins to get there. Mills also called out David Webb which is probably not an immediate priority but you never know what could happen.

JA:

You personally have been quite high on Charlie Oakley, how did you think he fared against Augustus Shorrock?

CK:

Charlie Oakley got the win that most were expecting from him but he was made to work for it. Augustus took the first round by keeping Charlie at range but once Charlie got his hands on him it was always heading for a finish. But it was another good fight.

JA:

Morgan vs Jolly was a dominant performance from Sid Morgan. What did you think of the fight?

CK:

It was unbelievable. Sid absorbed two punches, only two and he threw none. Then got the takedown, advanced position with ease and finished it comfortably. A brilliant display of his grappling prowess.

JA:

The co-main was two middleweight veterans, what did you make of this fight?

CK:

Ram Phookan was just on a different level to Rush on the feet but I don’t know why he went to the ground when he was having so much success on the feet. Either way, it was a good performance from the former champion and he puts his name in the ring for what could be a wide-open division if Beaumont won’t fight Baines.

JA:

Lastly, the main event. David Webb defended his title well, what did you think of his fight?

CK:

David outclassed Steven. I was a bit worried after the first round that Webb was going to be content with just controlling Griffin but he showed some more urgency in the second in pursuing firstly the takedown and then the submission. It is a solid win that moves the division forward.
