WFL: World Fighting League

Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome to the World Fighting League! This diary is a little different from the others, as the WFL is not a promotion, but more of a competition. Taking on

the form of the big American sports, the WFL will feature a regular season and playoffs, so that by the end one fighter remains. Now, this is obviously going to be

quite big, with lots of fights (I'll explain the format fully in the next post), so there will only be one tournament running at each time, with each tournament

obviously featuring the best fighters from a certain weight class. For the first tournament, I decided to use what is probably the deepest and most interesting weight

class at the moment, Lightweight. In the next post, as I mentioned above, I'll go over the format for the tournament, and then after that I'll post all of the fighters

competing in the WFL Lightweight Tournament! (Just a quick note, I'm using Tag01's awesome Modern Warriors 2.0 mod for this diary, check it out here).

WFL Lightweight Tournament - Format

The format is roughly going to take on that of one of the 'Big 4' American Sports, as I said in the first post, with a regular season to determine seeding for the

playoffs. Basically, there will be 30 fighters, and they'll each fight each other once. This will make up the regular season. Once all fighters have fought each other,

the 16 fighters with the best record will advance to the playoffs, which will be an elimination tournament. The fighter with the best record from the regular season

will be the #1 Seed, the fighter with the 2nd best record the #2 Seed and so on, all the way to #16.

Tiebreakers: If two or more fighters finish with the same record, the tiebreakers will be as follows:

1. Whoever won the fight between those two fighters during the regular season (this can only be used for 2 fighters with the same record, not more).

2. Whoever got the most finishes throughout the regular season.

3. Whoever won the most rounds throughout the regular season.

And there you have it. I'll just do a quick recap of the format for anyone a bit lost:

- There will be 30 fighters.

- In the regular season, all fighters will face each other, meaning that everyone will fight 29 times.

- Every regular season fight will be 3 rounds, and held under the Unified Rules of MMA, using the quick fight feature on WMMA 5.

- After the regular season, the 16 fighters with the best record will advance to the playoffs.

- The playoffs are an elimination tournament, and will be explained further once we get to them.

There we go, hopefully I've made it clear. Next up, will be the 30 fighters competing in the WFL Lightweight Tournament!

WFL Lightweight Tournament - Fighters

These are the 30 fighters competing. They are the Top 25 Lightweight Fighters according to the in-game fighter rankings, and then 5 other fighters who I felt deserved

to be on there, either by having beaten one of the top 25 recently, or something else.

This is the card for the first set of fights in the regular season. The featured fights (the ones in bold) are ones that I will actually recap, the others I'll just tell you the results. As the round goes on, Poirier seems to be hitting the bigger shots, so Diaz begins to pressure his opponent, but the round ends in similar fashion, with Poirier getting more damage done, in an open round.

R2: More of the same in round 2, although Diaz seems to be growing into the fight a little, with the Stockton man matching Poirier’s shots better than he did in the first. However, that is put to a slight halt when Poirier hits a glancing high kick that just catches Diaz, and opens a cut up near his eye that the referee gets the doctor to check, but it isn’t fight ending. Round 2 comes to an end, and it’s a close one, with neither man necessarily pulling away.

R3: As the fighters meet in the middle for the final round, Diaz dodges a left hand and follows it up with 2 jabs and a BIG RIGHT CROSS THAT HURTS POIRIER!!! DIAZ GOES FOR A KILL, AND HITS A HUGE RIGHT HAND THAT DOWNS HIS OPPONENT, BEFORE HE FOLLOWS UP WITH GROUND AND POUND, FORCING THE REFEREE TO STEP IN!!!!!!!!

Nate Diaz def. Melendez tries a few submission attempts to no avail, before Gaethje again tries to scramble, this time with greater effect, getting them both back to their feet, however Melendez gains back control and forces Gaethje back to the mat for the remainder of the round. A strong first round for Melendez.

R2: Gaethje comes out quickly, pressuring Melendez and hitting him up with a boatload of counters. As the round wears on, Melendez comes back into it, and gets some successes, but not enough to turn the tide of the round his way, with Gaethje getting the better of the exchanges in that round.

R3: This round is much closer, and is again all played out on the feet. It follows the pattern of Gaethje being the aggressor, and pressuring, whilst Melendez was happy to fight backwards with counters. Neither was able to do enough damage, and the fight went the distance in an extremely close round.

Justin Gaethje def. Gilbert Melendez

Via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

<img alt="jaxMwU3.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/jaxMwU3.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> vs. <img alt="EJBGFAY.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/EJBGFAY.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Edson Barboza vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov

R1: The fight begins and Khabib immediately gets a takedown, sending Barboza to the mat. However, nothing comes of it, with Khabib landing nothing of damage nor advancing his position, forcing the referee to stand them back up. Back on the feet, Barboza defends a Khabib takedown attempt, and circles back to the center of the cage, however one of his body kicks is caught by Khabib, allowing the Russian to get another takedown in the final moments of the round, a dominant one for the man from Dagestan.

R2: The second round starts as the first ended, with Khabib catching a Barboza kick, this time a right head kick, allowing him to get a takedown. However, like in the last round, nothing comes from it and the referee forces them to stand back up. Khabib again goes for another takedown which is defended by Barboza, who is pushed up to the cage by Khabib. After another unsuccessful takedown attempt, Khabib picks Barboza up and hits a big suplex as the round comes to an end! Another dominant one for the Russian.

R3: In the same way the second mirrored the closing moments of the first, the same happens here with the third and second round, as Khabib has a takedown attempt defended by Barboza, who is then pushed up against the cage and suplexed by Nurmagomedov. Nothing again comes from the takedown, with Barboza’s BJJ enough to help him defend against Khabib, and the referee stands them back up again. The fight comes to an end with Khabib hitting his sixth takedown of the fight in an utterly dominating, if boring, performance from the Russian.

Khabib Nurmagomedov def. Edson Barboza

Via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Eventually, the referee stands them up ,and Khabib shoots in again for a takedown to end the round, a dominant one for Khabib.

R2: Round 2 starts the same way the first did, with Khabib attempting a takedown, but this time Thompson defends it, and is pushed up against the cage by Khabib, but instead of attempting another takedown, Khabib instead keeps Thompson up against the cage, even getting a muay-thai clinch, before the referee separates them due to lack of progress. Again Khabib shoots in, and again Thompson defends and is pushed against the cage, although this time, Khabib does damage with lots of kicks, stomps and elbows to bring the round to an end, another dominant one for the Russian.

R3: Thompson looks to be aggressive this time, not allowing Khabib the room to get a takedown, however Khabib shows off excellent speed and timing in catching a kick from Thompson, and using that to get a takedown, where again Khabib stays close to Thompson, who fails on a few armbar attempts. The referee again stands them back up, but Khabib ends the fight with another takedown, in an another dominating, yet boring, performance.

Khabib Nurmagomedov def. We pass the halfway mark, and McGregor dodges a right hand, and counters with a job followed by a HEAD KICK THAT DAZES PETTIS, WHO COVERS UP!!! MCGREGOR LOOKS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE, RUNNING AT PETTIS AND CATCHING HIM WITH A FLYING KNEE (!!!), though he didn’t get all of it, and that allows Pettis to recover and regain his composure. The round ends with McGregor having the upper hand, lighting Pettis up with body shots and leg kicks.

R2: McGregor continues to have the upper hand on the feet in the second, even though he looks to be tiring a bit. Pettis is clearly limping from the damage he has taken from McGregor’s leg kicks, and McGregor outclasses Pettis on the feet to easily take the second.

R3: Final round, and it’s more of the same, with McGregor dominating the fight on the feet, lighting Pettis up with counter after counter, whilst Pettis can barely move thanks to the leg kicks from McGregor, who begins the trash talk Pettis as the fight ends, knowing he has this one in the bag.

Conor McGregor def. Anthony Pettis

Via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Brooks is then forced to push Lee up against the cage, however Lee defends and circles back to the center of the cage. Brooks tries to again push Lee up against the cage, but Lee once again defends and circles back out towards the center. However, the third time is the charm for Brooks, as he successfully pins Lee on the cage, and manages to keep him there, showing off excellent control that probably wins him the round.

R2: Brooks again tries to push Lee to the cage, but again, Lee defends, although this time, Lee takes control of the grapple AND PICKS BROOKS UP FOR A HUGE SLAM!!!!! Lee tries to pass the guard, however Brooks defends and starts to scramble. Lee comes out on top, holding Brooks down in the turtle position, facing him. THEN FROM OUT OF NOWHERE, LEE STARTS RAINING DOWN HUGE RIGHTS ON BROOKS, THAT FORCES THE REFEREE TO STEP IN!!!!!!!!

Kevin Lee def. Numerous times, Poirier buys a feint and leaves himself open to be countered by McGregor, in a good opening round for the Irishman.

R2: Poirier seems to be more content standing with McGregor in the second round, going toe-to-toe with the Irishman, even though McGregor still seems to have an advantage. Nothing of note seems to be happening, with exchanges not creating much in the way of damage, until McGregor counters a left hand from Poirier with a jab and A POWERFUL STRAIGHT LEFT THAT MAKES POIRIER GO LIMP FROM THE MOMENT IT TOUCHES HIM!!!!!!!!

Conor McGregor def. This is proven when Ferguson scores with a MASSIVE RIGHT HOOK TO THE JAW!!!!! ALVAREZ IS DOWN BUT FERGUSON CAN’T TAKE ADVANTAGE AS THE ROUND COMES TO AN END!!!!.

R3: Ferguson continues to have the better of the stand-up exchanges in the final round of the fight, forcing Alvarez to switch tactics and shoot for a takedown, which he gets. As Alvarez attempts to pass to side control, Ferguson attempts a triangle choke, but Alvarez blocks it. Alvarez tries to pass the guard again, but this time a scramble ensues, with Ferguson somehow managing to come out on top in the north-south position! Ferguson takes advantage of this, attempting a north-south choke that Alvarez blocks as the round, and fight, come to an end.

Tony Ferguson def.
