WWF 1996: Attitude Adjustment

January 1, 1996:

"In somewhat of a shock move, World Wrestling Federation owner, Vince McMahon has named magazine editor Vince Russo as the company's new head booker/writer. Sources are reporting that the WWF is in for somewhat of an 'overhaul' moving forth." ~ Wrestling Observer Newsletter

12/17/95 - In Your House 5 results, from Hershey Pennsylvania:

- WWF IC Champion, Razor Ramon and Marty Jannetty defeated Psycho Sid and The 1-2-3 Kid at 12:23 when Razor pinned Sid with a bulldog off the middle turnbuckle. During the match, Goldust and his usher watched on from the crowd. Todd Pettengill approached him to get a word to which he said he was keeping his eyes on Razor.

- Ahmed Johnson defeated Buddy Landel [sub for Dean Douglas] at the 42 second mark with the Pearl River Plunge. Shortly thereafter, Jerry Lawler and a returning Jeff Jarrett (who after a five month hiatus was invited to do guest commentary, as he was promoting his new album, "Greater Than Great", which Lawler had presented him with a golden CD plaque to commemorate selling 500,000 copies) began insulting Johnson. When Ahmed started to threaten The King, Double J smashed him over the head with his new plaque. Jarrett continued the assault momentarily, before quickly retreating backstage.

- Hunter Hearst Helmsley defeated Henry O. Godwinn at 8:58 in an Arkansas Hog Pen match by backdropping Henry into the hog pen. Hillbilly Jim was the surprise guest referee.

- Owen Hart defeated Diesel via disqualification at 4:34 when Big Daddy Cool shoved referee Tim White. Diesel opted not to pin Owen after one Jacknife powerbomb, but instead shouted: "This Is For YOU, Shawn!" and delivered another. Shortly thereafter, Diesel motioned that he wanted the WWF World Heavyweight Title back around his waist.

- The Undertaker defeated King Mabel at 6:11 in a Casket Match, stuffing both members of Men On A Mission into the casket, locking the door shut. During the match, The Deadman regained the remnants of the urn, and afterwards motioned that he too wanted the WWF World Title.

- WWF World Champion, Bret Hart defeated The British Bulldog at 21:09 via pinfall with an Oklahoma side roll after kicking the challenger in the face as he ran towards the corner. During the match it was announced that due to his dominant victory tonight, The Undertaker would be challenging for the WWF Title at The Royal Rumble. Post-match, Todd Pettingill conducted a backstage interview with The Undertaker and Paul Bearer in regards to his upcoming title shot, but then....

Big Daddy Cool came nose-to-nose with The Phenom, outraged he wasn't the one receiving the shot!

Hey guys, my name is Nick. I used to post here under a different name that I can't remember many many moons ago. I'm RKOwnage's brother and shall no longer lurk in silence. Was originally gonna play in-game through WrestleMania 12 before dropping this, but feel as if I've evoked enough here to make things at least semi-intriguing from jump. Info, roster and first Monday Night RAW preview to follow.

Enjoy.

Comment: The tag team scene is pretty thin on the ground around this time, especially for face teams. I can't see you wanting to keep your Intercontinental Champion stuck in the tag league, so keep the belts on the faces for now as there are more heel teams to chase them.....unless you have a new team lined up obviously

Comment: Hopefully this isn't as bad as their Summerslam 95 effort.....Diesel all the way

Comment: Bulldog could have been World Champ around this time, if only for a minute.....but not by winning it on Raw

Good luck with this, it's a great time to book with so many possibilities to improve a pretty confused product.....one foot in the "New Generation" one foot in the "Attitude Era".....it'll be interesting to see how you get there.

This contest is set to be a 4-way elimination tag match, under 'NFL/College Bowl style rules' as Vince so eagerly emphasizes. Each team will be awarded a timeout at any time... a team is eliminated when a teammate is pinned, disqualified, counted out, or submits... any 'player' may be tagged in at any time... once tagged in, physical contact must be made with the opponent before tagging out.

Every 'player' comes out in corny jerseys, with their number symbolizing something (ie: The Kid rocking number 123, while Razor sported the number 4, referring to the amount of times he's won the IC title). During the team's entrances, Goldust's usher presents Ramon with a gift -- a box of golden flowers. Ramon immediately whips his ass for it, all while Goldust eerily watches on from the 'sidelines' as The King points out. The match itself was OK at best and a bit messy at times. Our first elimination came after a costly miscue from Sid, causing The Kid to get caught in the Sidewinder! DiBiase yelled for a timeout from the outside but unfortunately, the official didn't see it. This outrages Sid, who's held back by The Million Dollar Man whilst repeatedly screaming "I'll rip your head off!" at referee Earl Hebner.

Elimination number two was a rather abrupt one. Razor was rollin', heavily taking it to The King Of Harts, but just as Ramon sets him up for the fall-away slam, he notices Goldust suddenly appeared up the aisle once again! Completely thrown off, The Bad Guy drops Owen without actually executing the move, to which he swiftly syncs Razor in a quick roll-up, hooking the tights for leverage and scoring the fall.

Next up, Vince and Lawler kick it over to our colleague, Dox Hendrix, who is standing by for *blows whistle* a... Two Minute Drill??... Oh ok, this is where he gives us our Royal Rumble report in two minutes. Got it.

He starts off by informing us that "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel, who's been in quite the foul mood lately, has officially declared himself as the very first entrant into the 1996 Royal Rumble match! And that no matter whom the other 29 superstars may be, Diesel has got to be the odds on favorite.

Dok: Imagine the possibilities! A Survivor Series rematch between Diesel and Bret Hart?! Diesel Vs. The British Bulldog?! Diesel Vs. ...The UNDERTAKER?!!

Speaking of The Undertaker, he states, going on to put over his forthcoming WWF Title match with Bret, or whomever the champion may be, claiming that dark days in the World Wrestling Federation could most certainly be on the horizon.

We then see footage from In Your House 5: the Jeff Jarrett assault on Ahmed Johnson, then a pre-taped promo from The Pearl River Powerhouse himself...

Ahmed: JEFF JARRETT! You see, what you did to me was WRONG and uncalled for and at the Royal Rumble, I'm gonna take it to you like we used to take it to those PUNKS ON THE STREET! By whoopin' yo ASS from one side of town -- TO THE OTHER!!

The ticker runs down, as Dok then sends it over to another colleague of ours, Mr. Todd Pettengill...

Todd is standing by with The British Bulldog, his manager James E. Cornette, and their attorney, Clarence Mason...

Todd: James E. Cornette, a golden opportunity tonight for...

Cornette: Gimme that you sorry excuse for a journalist! You see Hitman, at In Your House you MAY have pulled one out of left field. But tonight? Tonight my friend, it's all about this man right here. It's all about "The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith and HIS crowning moment. Remember - the sun don't shine on a dog's backside more than once. And with the best manager in the game today, alongside the world's greatest attorney getting this rematch approved, this time, The BULLDOG PREVAILS!

Bulldog: That's right James. Bret Hart, you and I have a storied history for sure. From The Bulldogs versus The Foundation -- to Wembley Stadium -- to being family. But in just a few short minutes, much like at Wembley, The Bulldog is gonna take that title you hold so dear.

Pettengill sends us back over to ringside, where we're set for our next contest.

Vince reminds us that Big Daddy Cool's been in a foul mood as of late, and boy was he on point. A mere seconds after the bell rang, Diesel connects with a devastating big boot right to Mabel's jaw and makes the cover, knocking off our reigning King of the Ring! Sir Mo attempts to tell the official that King Mabel wasn't ready, but catches a Jacknife Powerbomb for his efforts!

This match suffered because there was not enough selling shown.

Lawler can't believe what he's just seen and McMahon reminds us that Diesel is in fact, the very first entry into this year's Royal Rumble match, and that 29 other superstars surely do have a BIG problem on their hands. The King says that he's liking Diesel's new attitude as of late, and how everyone in the back, from Bret Hart to The Undertaker better be on notice!

We return from commercial break with Vince standing in the ring. He goes on to introduce his guest at this time, The Undertaker! Following the grand smoke and mirror entrance, and the giant standing ovation, we're ready to get down to business.

Vince: Mr. Bearer, your man right here will be facing the winner of tonight's WWF Championship rematch between The British Bulldog and Bret Hart in just two short weeks at the Royal Rumble. Your thoughts if you so kindly will...

Paul: ooOOOOOOHHH YEEEEESSSSS! Finally Mr. McMahon, after all this time, the creatures of the night will get what they've been crying out for, for oh so long! MY UNDERTAKER will be leaving the 1996 Royal Rumble with the World Wrestling Federation CHAMPIONSHIP! OOHHH YEEESSS!

Undertaker: The day of reckoning is upon us. Hitman... Bulldog... whomever emerges this evening will be left with the gruesome task of standing before the reaper, only to fall victim like so many before... as MY World Title reign commences! RREEEEEESSSTTT.... IN PEEEEEEAAAAACCCCEEE!

The King, alone on duty for the moment, goes on about how things are REALLY heating up here in the World Wrestling Federation. Then, as Vince returns, he's getting word from the back that there's some kind of Lombardi trophy presentation?

We head to the locker room area, where RAW Bowl winners, The Smokin' Gunns are seen laughing and consulting with the likes of Ahmed Johnson, Bob Holly, Marty Jannetty, Razor Ramon, Savio Vega, etc. The Brooklyn Brawler walks over with a trophy in hand -- with his own head enshrined into it?!!

Brawler: Listen up here guys. I'm here to present yous with this, the Lombardi trophy!

Billy: What the HELL...

Razor: You gotsta be kidding me, chico...

Brawler: Kidding? This right here is the greatest honor in the HISTORY of sports and if any of you ingrates got a probl...

The Brawler's mouth really does him in this time, as everyone starts to pummel him at the same time! He hits the floor and tries to cover up as much as possible, but Ahmed hoists up a full cooler up and dumps the entire thing on him, leaving Vince obnoxiously yelling "THAT'S OUR LIPTON ICED TEA COOLER!" multiple times over. The camera zooms in on a beaten and battered Brawler, who licks his lips and claims it tastes "pretty freakin' good". Cringeworthy.

Coincidentally, a Lipton iced tea graphic is shown and McMahon promotes it, with The Bulldog's theme hitting. The two proceed to hype our main event, as we see Stu, Helen and Diana in the front row. J.R. and The King inform us that just announced, tomorrow night on RAW, "The Bad Guy" Razor Ramon puts his Intercontinental Title on the line against an old nemesis, "Double J" Jeff Jarrett!

Jim Ross conducted an interview with The Bad Guy earlier today, which airs. Ramon states that tomorrow night, he's going to best Double J, just like he's done time and time again in the past. However, when J.R. brings up Goldust's name, Razor gets far more intense than usual. He goes on to send an outright threat, claiming sooner than later he's gonna get his hands on that weirdo freak!

Perhaps someone will read this someday because I was a success in the wrestling business, perhaps not. Either way, here it is. The Diary of a Madman: How I became Vince McMahon's right hand man and the path we chose.

Hello everybody, my name is Vince Russo and I'm the guy Vince McMahon has hired as head of creative/head booker for the World Wrestling Federation as of January, 1996. I've decided to record some of my own personal thoughts, opinions and creative ideas here, in hopes it will both help track my progress and leave some reference points I could return back to from time to time if need be.

I have a vision. In order to bring this sinking ship back up to surface, this company must EVOLVE. While the days of Hogan's Rock N' Wrestling worked wonders for their time, we've managed to transcend into TL Hopper and The Goon approximately a decade later. That's not E-volving -- it's DE-volving. We need a shot in the arm right now in the worst way.

That being said, I've come into my new role with a monumentally positive attitude. The roster, while far weaker than WCW's in terms of star power, is doing okay. We have our current champion, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, who's quite possibly the best all-around technical wrestler in the world today. Shawn Michaels, one of the best workers of this 'New Generation' movement, and perhaps the single hottest up-and-coming superstar in the entire business presently. Then we have guys like "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel, who's certainly gotten a lot of flack over the last few years, due in part to his instant mega-push, but who's also made his presence felt in a BIG way - and is really starting to come into his own as of late. Bret's brother Owen, another one of the absolute best workers out there today, who is hands down the epitome of everything a great pro-wrestling heel should be. Current IC champ, Razor Ramon, a guy who 'gets it', a guy who oozes charisma, and a guy who has an undeniable bright future in this industry. The Undertaker, the cornerstone of the modern day World Wrestling Federation, and in my opinion (Andre aside) the most menacing figure in this company's history. We also have some new (and/or) young talent that I'm tremendously excited to work with. Guys like Vader, Hunter Hearst-Helmsley and Goldust. Not to mention the few newbies we've got coming in, which we've locked down this past week.

For now, I'll leave you the list of goals my boss has set for me, followed by the five bullet-points of my vision - which I'll probably be adding to down the stretch.

McMahon's:

Goal #1: When the time expires, the WWF must have gained popularity in America. 2 years. Critical.

Goal #2: Shawn Michaels must be kept above a B- overall popularity in America. 1 year, 8 months. High.

Goal #3: Razor Ramon must be kept above a C+ overall popularity in America. 1 year, 10 months. High.

Goal #4: Billy Gunn must have reached at least a C overall popularity in America when the time expires. 1 year, 10 months. High.

Goal #5: You can't hire any wrestler who is classed as a luchador. 1 year, 4 months. Average.

Goal #6: You can't hire any wrestler who is classed as an MMA crossover. 2 years, 4 months. Average.

Mine:

Mirror society. The WWF has been immensely behind the curve as of late and this MUST change.

Better characterization and overall storytelling, both in and out of ring. The traditional 'good guy' versus 'bad guy' model needs a major adjustment and should be more character driven down the line.

Be more unpredictable. Do away with same old same old cookie-cutter, predictable wrestling formula and turn Monday Night Raw into must-see, car crash TV.

Be more edgy. Tarantino films, grunge music and the coastal rap rivalry are a few examples of what's hip these days -- sorry Vince, but I didn't see the crossover in TL Hopper or The Goon.

Roster overhaul. As we stand, there's plenty of guys we want here. Some of whom deserve a better push. Some of whom we believe need a repackaging. And some of who are just god awful, and most likely need to go.

Realizing this all can't just happen overnight, AND I still gotta swerve the old man on the vast majority of the aforementioned, I have accomplished my first goal: talking Vince into going live with Monday Night Raw every week against WCW Monday Nitro. He was lukewarm to the idea at best initially, but then agreed that WCW is now to be seen as serious competition, not to be taken lightly. And that we'd need to step up and go pound for pound.

In closing, I do plan on doing a monthly report, or whenever it is I deem necessary. We've got some substantial happenings coming up, heading into/for the Royal Rumble this year. So buckle up!

'Till next time...
