Cody is one of the most popular guys on the roster and then you want him to go down to feud with the Gunn Club. Ogogo has potential but he definitely isn't ready. This is Cody's first PPV win in over a year, and Ogogo will be fine. Cody Rhodes didn't need the victory, Ogogo did. They have something special in Ogogo and a big win could've made him a huge star for AEW and if Cody was the team player he claims to be, he'd realize that and put Ogogo over. Instead, hypocrite that he is, he did the same thing he always bitched about HHH doing and cut Ogogo off at the knees. What does Ogogo do after this? The pop-up punch is. Cody didn't get hit by that. Cody needed this. Since coming into AEW he has been doing nothing but putting young guys over. Before tonight the only people that he beat on AEW PPV were his brother, Shawn Spears, and Lance Archer. This is Cody's first major win since the dog collar match. If Ogogo beat Cody, feuding with Colton Gunn would be a massive step backwards. The Gunn Club are not stars. No one should be beating Cody unless they're moving into a main event slot, and Ogogo is not ready for that yet. I imagine Ogogo will go on a tear, rack up wins and improve, and face Cody again down the line when he's ready to move into the main event. Having green guys in the main event is how you end up with situations like Nathan Jones or Great Khali Exactly. Cody has made himself the gatekeeper to the main event. If you can't have a good match with Cody they aren't ready to be in the main event scene. A win over Cody should almost always launch someone into the title picture. I didn't like the storyline going into the match but Cody definitely should have won. In my opinion the match didn't even need to happen right now. Cody has been making terrible decisions, one after another, ever since the neck tattoo. I dislike the man now and I used to be a HUGE fan. Everything about this storyline has been awful. From QT Marshall's group of jabronis to Cody's dreadful promo trying to turn it into USA vs. UK and the stupid weigh-in segment (what even was the point of that)? On another note, though, DoN had some incredible matches. Stadium Stampede was once again a lot of fun, the World title match had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and how great it was to watch Sting do his thing. I love me some Stinger! Rampaaage Posted May 31, 2021 Share Posted May 31, 2021 Another great PPV. Top to bottom there wasn't a match I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I thought Darby/Sting vs. Scorpio/Page would be the obvious weak spot but honestly I was blown away with some of the bumps Sting took. Wasn't MOTN or anything but another really solid bout. Excited to see Jungle Boy vs. Omega and hopefully Cassidy vs. Omega later down the line. I did find it a little weird they've already moved on to booking PAC & Penta vs. The Bucks. Not sure if it's a title match or not, but it seems a little weird to give a guy who just lost a world championship match and a shot versus the tag champs. milamber Posted May 31, 2021 Share Posted May 31, 2021 - Riho vs Deeb © was a Top 5 women's match in AEW, imo. Riho selling Serena's vicious offense was fantastic. - Cage vs Page was great. Cage losing because he wouldn't play dirty was interesting. - Mox & Kingston vs Young Bucks © was great. I'm not sure who can beat the Bucks now. - Casino Battle Royale was OK. Big win for Jungle Boy. Christian didn't live up to his slogan... could be the start of a slow burn heel turn. Perfect match to debut Rush. - Ogogo vs Cody was solid. Ogogo impressed me and the loss won't hurt him. - Archer vs Miro © was good. - Dr. Britt vs Shida © was great. D.M.D. Era begins. - Ego & Sky vs Darby & Sting was great. That throw into the crowd was wild. - PAC vs Cassidy vs Omega © was my MOTN. Kenny hitting PAC with all the belts was a highlight. Mark Henry! - Stadium Stampede was just as fun as last year. Crazy entrance for the Inner Circle. I'm surprised it didn't end with a big stunt. I'm happy Sammy got the rub but FTR & PnP didn't feature enough. Great PPV. The number of people who actually wanted Cody to win were far fewer. Also am I the only one who finds it odd that Billy and Colton Gunn have not uttered a peep about Ogogo storyline injuring Austin Gunn? Shouldn't they be seeking revenge or something? Given what he did to Austin Gunn in storylines though, this feels like it ought to have been Billy or Colton seeking revenge for Austin rather then it being all about Cody anyhow. Ogogo didn't need to be facing Cody this early in his career anymore than Jade Cargill should have been fighting Shida (or Rosa or Deeb or Baker). They're both rookies with amazing potential who need to be carefully managed to protect their mystique without exposing their inexperience. They've been doing that with Jade. This apparently goes above people's heads. It made perfect sense for Ogogo to face Cody and it made even more sense for him to lose. It doesn't destroy his mystique in the slightest. Despite it being his FOURTH MATCH EVER he held his own against a man who is at the top of the card and has a stellar win-loss record. Cody can work with anyone and have a good match. Typically, the percentage of fans that partake in discord and social media complaining is very small compared to the fanbase as a whole. It's fine that you aren't enjoying him anymore and I'm not trying to discount your feelings or those of the people you talk to. </p><p> </p><p> All that said, I do think Cody is overdue for a heel turn. Mootinie Posted June 4, 2021 Share Posted June 4, 2021 Whilst I will admit that Cody is a bit too much of a white meat babyface for my personal liking, he serves AEW's external interests with his charity work, the co-operations from business to business, stuff like that. They have a T-Shirt of his up right now for Pride Month with all the proceeds going to the National Center for Transgender Equality. Even the Ogogo match was only really done so they could have a patriotic babyface on the show for Memorial Day weekend when they were selling tickets for $5 to military personnel. On a different topic, AEW have announced Omega vs. Jungle Boy for a Saturday night Dynamite on June 26th. I could have sworn they announced on PPV that it was set for the June 9th Dynamite, I swear they had a graphic that said it was in two week's time haha.
