Rick Stanley vs. Mac Fuller

An exciting matchup between two aggressive strikers. Stanley's weight advantage means that Fuller has to avoid receiving big strikes.

Greg Atteveld vs. Mark Cohen

Interesting matchup between two grapplers. The jiu-jitsu black belt has to be in top form to overcome the larger wrestler.

The first round starts with Bruns dominating the giant Canadian with boxing while stuffing any takedown attempts. The second round starts with Clough quickly shooting for a takedown, but gets hit on his way in with a punch that opens a cut under his eye and Bruns defends with a good sprawl. Bruns keeps dominating the standup until Clough blocks a punching combo and uses the chance to grab Bruns in a clinch. Fuller advances to the semi-finals.

Mac Fuller defeats Rick Stanley by TKO (cut) in 2:42 of round 3.

Greg Atteveld vs. Mark Cohen

The last fight of the first round starts with Atteveld displaying boxing skill against Cohen, but gets hit with a few strong punches and gets a cut under his eye. Cohen drives forward for huge double leg takedown that ends with Atteveld seated against the cage. The fighters trade some close range hits until Cohen turns Atteveld on his back and gets the mount. Cohen pounds with heavy punches, but Atteveld manages to defend until the bell ring. Striking match continues on the second round until Cohen dashes forward despite eating a punch to clinch with Atteveld. Cohen picks him up and slams him down hard and gets side control. Atteveld defends against punches and with neither side managing to advance their position the referee brings the fighters back to their feet. Striking match continues into the third round. Cohen completes another succesful takedown. Atteveld is unable to defend against the punches and gives up his back in attempt to protect himself. Atteveld unsuccesfully tries to get free of Cohen on his back while receiving heavy pounding, but again manages to defend himself until the end of the fight. The judges give unanimous 30-27 to Cohen and he advances to the semi-finals against Mac Fuller.

Eugene Clough vs. Jeff Carlton

As Clough is looking to clinch, Carlton lands several heavy hits. Clinch does not work for Clough either, as he gets out wrestled and pushed against the cage. Carlton peppers him with dirty boxing until referee seperates the fighters. Carlton misses a jab, but a vicious right hand rocks Clough hard. Carlton lands another straight right through the guard and Clough falls down and stops moving. Carlton advances to the final.

Jeff Carlton defeats Eugene Clough by knockout (punch) in 4:41 of round 1.

Mac Fuller vs. Mark Cohen

Fuller uses his boxing skills to hit combinations on Cohen and prevent takedown attempts. Cohen finally manages to grab a hold and pushes him against the cage. However, fatigue from the last fight seems to be affecting Cohen as he simply smothers Fuller against the wall. The second round is dominated by Fuller as he pressures the tired wrestler and prevents him from going for takedowns. A good straight right opens a cut under Cohen's eye. Fuller continues his pressure in the last round and Cohen's cut re-opens. This time the doctor allows the fight to continue. Cohen finally manages to push Fuller against the cage, but both fighers are exhausted and Cohen simply holds onto Fuller. The judges give 29-28, 29-28 and 28-29 to Fuller. He will face Jeff Carlton in the finals.

Mac Fuller defeats Mark Cohen by split decision.

Final

Jeff Carlton vs. Mac Fuller

The final begins with Carlton moving in for a clinch. He picks Fuller up and slams him on the mat. Fuller displays impressive wrestling skill as he prevents the much bigger wrestler from passing his guard and defends well against his ground and pound. With lack of action, referee stands the fighters back up. Fuller uses quick punches until Carlton gets another takedown. The takedown results in a scramble and somehow Fuller ends up on top of Carlton in north-south position. Fuller lands a few elbows before the bell rings. In the second round Fuller confidently pressures Carlton with punches before getting taken down again. Yet again Fuller stops Carlton's advance and the referee resets the fight after a long stalemate. Carlton has little answers to Fuller's striking pressure and receives a cut under his eye. With the second round nearing the end, Carlton finds another takedown, but Fuller pulls guard preventing Carlton from moving into side control. Third round begins with Carlton yet again succesfully taking Fuller down, but the guard is too strong and the referee brings the fight back on feet after a long stalemate. A combination by Fuller ends with a crunching right hook to the jaw of Carlton. Carlton is on wobbly legs, but does not go down from another right. Carlton's cut re-opens, but he ignores it and shoots down for another takedown. Fuller goes down by single leg pulling guard and the round ends without either fighter finding further success.

The fourth round continues with Fuller punishing Carlton with boxing until Carlton finds another takedown halfway into the round. Fuller attempts to scramble onto his feet as Carlton tries to pass his guard, but it turns out to be a mistake as Carlton manages to grab him from behind and pulls him back on the ground. Carlton finds double hooks from back mount and lands several heavy hits head. Fuller seems to be in big trouble, but the bell saves him. Fuller goes forward aggressively in the last round looking for a knockout. He dominates the round, but fails to land a big shot. As the fight is nearing end, Carlton gets his ninth succesful takedown, but is yet again unable to pass the guard of Fuller. The judges gives 48-47, 48-47 and 47-48 to Carlton. Carlton wins the League of Warriors tournament to become the Ultimate Warrior despite Fuller's impressive guard defence. He shows great charisma in the post-fight interview, truly fitting for a champion.

Jeff Carlton defeats Mac Fuller by split decisions and wins the title of Ultimate Warrior.

Bushido 1

Tokyo, Japan

Sunday, Week 1, February 1989

Attendance: 251

Seigo Tsuda vs. Taufik Wijaya

Tsuda starts the fight aggressively, but Wijaya uses quick movement to avoid his big swings and catch him on counter. Wijaya attempts to get close for a clinch, but Tsuda hits good straight right and stops the attempt. After dodging couple of punches Wijaya finally manages to clinch with Tsuda, but does not succeed with a leg trip to take him down. Long wrestling match ensues with both fighters evenly matched in the clinch, but eventually referee seperates the fighters. Wijaya keeps using good movement to avoid Tsuda's aggessive striking. Wijaya comes up better in an exchange of punches, but a cross opens a cut under his eye. In the second round, Tsuda is visibly tired and Wijaya easily grabs him and sweeps his legs for a takedown from clinch. Tsuda ends up in half guard which he can't hold and Wijaya moves straight into mount. Wijaya succeeds with armbar and Tsuda has to tap out.

Taufik Wijaya defeats Seigo Tsuda by submission (armbar) in 1:52 of round 2.

Eijiro Yanagita vs. Indriyanto Setyo Nugroho

The first round is a striking match with Nugroho using his reach advantage to come out ahead. However, he can't keep it up for the entire round and clinches in exhaustion. Yanagita pushes him against the ropes and uses dirty boxing nad knees before taking him down. Yanagita passes to side control, but can't finish a submission before the round ends. The second round starts with an exchange of strikes before Yanagita clinches and pushes Nugroho back against the ropes. Elbow to the face cuts Nugroho under his eye. Yanagita hits Nugroho with uppercut and elbows in the clinch before the referee seperates the fighters. Yanagita gets cut under his eye from a cross before another clinch ends with Nugroho pressed against the ropes yet again. With both fighters exhausted, neither fight is able to do much in sloppy clinches. The judges declare Yanagita as the unanimous winner.

Eijiro Yanagita defeats Indriyanto Setyo Nugroho by unanimous decision.

Robun Yamazaki vs. Tsuramatsu Inoue

Yamazaki immediately shoots for successful double leg takedown. Inoue can't stop Yamazaki from advancing to side control and getting an armbar. The fight seems to be over, but Inoue somehow manages to pop his arm free. Yamazaka instead transitions into americana and this time Inoue is forced to tap.

Robun Yamazaki defeats Tsuramatsu Inoue by submission (americana) in 3:52 of round 1.

Bakin Sakamoto vs. Dokuohtei Kuroki

Sakamoto lands couple of punches before Kuroki is able to clinch with him. A quick trip takedown lands Sakamoto face first into the mat with Kuroki taking his back. Several hard hits to the head by Kuroki force the referee to stop the fight.

Dokuohtei Kuroki defeats Bakin Sakamoto by TKO (strikes) in 1:40 of round 1.
