BREAKING NEWS

Las Vegas, Nevada

December 28th 2018

Time of retirement has come for Dana White. Rumors in recent days were confirmed, as the UFC held a press conference yesterday to announce the retirement to members of the media and fans gathered in Las Vegas, outside of the UFC performance institute. White told the attendees that his mission at the head of the largest sports organization had been reached, and that he was leaving the house in order. Indeed, with its new television deal with ESPN, the skyrocketing of the big stars such as Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones, and more, the organization seems in really good shape. White withdrew with the feeling of accomplished duty, having built an incredible empire and given to a grassroots sport a prominent place in the daily lives of sports fans. The new administration will soon announce the schedule for 2019.

The UFC held a special ceremony last night in Las Vegas to bring into the UFC Hall of Fame different personalities related to MMA. So three people received their ticket, former champions Michael Bisping and Tito Ortiz, as well as new retiree Dana White. Several current and past fighters of the organization were present on site to celebrate. The new administration also took the opportunity to make a first announcement since the departure of Dana White. It was Nick Maynard who made the announcement that Daniel Cormier, HW and LHW champion, had dropped his belt of 205 pounds to concentrate the end of his career in heavyweight. By the board, Maynard announced that a rematch between Alexander Gustafsson and Jon Jones would be held at UFC 232 later in the month. We recall that the last card to take place in the White era was UFC231, between Max Holloway and Brian Ortega. Maynard also invited the press to a new event tomorrow, regarding an important announcement for MMA fans.

The story of Strikeforce and WEC is still repeating itself. The UFC announced this afternoon that it was closing the doors of its child company, Invicta FC, which specialized in women's fights. But that's not all. The UFC also announced a new system that would soon serve as minor leagues. Indeed, the Ultimate Contender Championship was born today. Returning to the beautiful Toronto for the first UFC on ESPN card ever presented, this card promises a lot of action ! In the main event, Jiu Jitsu specialist Demian Maia will welcome into the UFC former Bellator and One FC Welterweight Champion Ben Funky Askren in what could be a superb technical fight. The undefeated Askren has been awaited for a long time by UFC fans, and he has now the chance to prove what he's worth in the biggest MMA organization of the world. Already in the #7 spot of the welterweight rankings, the wrestling ace is looking to make a run for the belt. But before that, he has to go through Demian Maia, one of the most dangerous grappler in the division, and also a submission stud. Both fighters need that win to make a run for the belt, this fight should deliver ! In the co-main event, Paige VanZant is a late replacement for Joanna Jerdrezjeck, who had to pull out earlier this week due to injury. A fan favorite, PVZ will face however tough opposition, as Alexis Davis will fight in front of her home crowd. Will the support of the arena be enough to defeat VanZant ? Also on this card, bluechip prospect Israel Adesanya takes on up and comer Uriah Hall in a middlewight fight where you shouldn't blink if don't want to miss action. Also featured here in Toronto, prospects Olivier Aubin-Mercier, the Canadian Gangster, and Strawweight Maycee Barber, who will look to use national TV time to shine.
